@@toastmentoyt1880 we never thought we would ever find Luigi in Super Mario 64, but we did. Don’t lose hope. It’s out there somewhere, so we might find it one day.
Man, I still remember the time people would make rom hacks of the game and try to pass them as real prototypes, there were so many hoaxes back in the day. I'm so happy that we're finally getting to see the real deal!
literally no, it was shown off once, has a few, really low quality scans, and was most definitely returned to SEGA and scrapped, as were most other prototypes returned to SEGA. we can hope for say, the early ballhog prototype shown off at CES to have remnants of TTS, but thats lost unless it gets found and released by SEGA themselves.
when i first saw a video of someone playing the sonic 1 prototype, i honestly thought it was fake from ghz to slz. but then i saw scrap brain being terribly unfinished and it reminded me of the unfinished mess of stages from the sonic 2 prototype, and i knew it must be real.
the ROM is actually chock full of little secrets and mysterious pieces of code, this is probably THE most interesting prototype I've had a look at, definitely worth more research
2:51 Fun fact; The layout gif present on the proto's TCRF page is actually an edit I did of a partially-recreated layout that was posted in 2018, on one of Sonic 1's prerelease pages (as it was based on VHS footage that featured a bit of gameplay in this early Special Stage). The gif here is partially-fixed from my revision, as I missed that me copy-pasting the whole bottom area made the lower-right yellow blocks inanimate. This error was fixed soon after, except one of the yellow blocks doesn't blink blue. 5:05 Also you misspelt that as "Sparlking".
with it being an unfinished prototype & using an older physics engine, there remains a chance that all of the code & assets in the show cart are present here. i would suggest decompiling it until the purpose of every byte is recognized.
Fun fact: not even the first sonic game is started and there is a glitch on the titelscreen: The " Press Start" in the final game wasnt show due to a glitch where the game text uses the same memory as the "Press Start" Text so it goes unused. But in this prototype the "Press Start" Text dosnt zse the same memory so it is seen in this prototype.

Nothing like taking a look at early builds, it's always interesting. Btw, narrantion/voices in Stereo sound kinda weird. You should try to Mono and center out your voice tracks since that works better for that kind of audio.
@@Novika75 Ah that's what I thought actually, I use my phone to record too sometimes lol. But even then you should be able to Mono the track and it should sound just fine I think. Even then, thanks for the vid anyway, always good to see more Sonic content.

Call it dumb faith, but I have a feeling that in a few years, we might get at least some footage of the Tokyo Toy show version. Then we could get a recreation hack like with the shoshinkai Mario 64 build
You know what would be more crazy? After a few months or so they find the CES builds and the TTS 1990 prototype :D edit: *AND THEY MAKE IT FOR FREE!!!!!!!*
There aren't many people like Buckaroo, willing to give it out for free. Other sonic 1 prototypes are likely in the hands of private buyers that likely won't share the prototype or will have it be available but for a ridiculous price.
@Oneironaut I should have been more specific. I meant that on the 5th of january 2020 there weren't any signs yet that the year was going to be a mess, so for now it's too early to know how 2021 will be.
This is a really cool discovery! It does suck that it wasn’t the Tokyo Toy Show build, but it’s a prototype build of Sonic 1 nonetheless.
I know right it's sad that version is pretty much gone for good but at least we got something still.
If it was that build, we'd still be looking for this one or one like it.
The CES build might look just as fire though, don't set your expectations too low
The fact we will never find the first prototype. And I find that sad 😞

The best thing about this prototype is easily Sonic's running sprites being aligned, resembling the ones from Sonic CD.
