This is a really cool discovery! It does suck that it wasn’t the Tokyo Toy Show build, but it’s a prototype build of Sonic 1 nonetheless.
I know right it's sad that version is pretty much gone for good but at least we got something still.
If it was that build, we'd still be looking for this one or one like it.
The CES build might look just as fire though, don't set your expectations too low
The fact we will never find the first prototype. And I find that sad 😞
@@toastmentoyt1880 we never thought we would ever find Luigi in Super Mario 64, but we did. Don’t lose hope. It’s out there somewhere, so we might find it one day.
Sega is like: "Gee, they really love all those unfinished glitchy game prototypes, why didn't they like Sonic 06?
Well we answer "We like them because they preserve history"
Sonic 06 has more glitches than these prototypes and is ruined by the kiss scene
lol
The advent of more youtubers talking about obscure sonic stuff is exciting
True
Yes.
"You can go straight portal. Falling again and again and again and again and again. Fun is infinite!"
That made me smile.

Man, I still remember the time people would make rom hacks of the game and try to pass them as real prototypes, there were so many hoaxes back in the day. I'm so happy that we're finally getting to see the real deal!
I have hopes that the 1990 prototype will someday turn up, in the most unexpected place in the world.
I think now before it was no way but they found this one. it will most likely turn up
literally no, it was shown off once, has a few, really low quality scans, and was most definitely returned to SEGA and scrapped, as were most other prototypes returned to SEGA. we can hope for say, the early ballhog prototype shown off at CES to have remnants of TTS, but thats lost unless it gets found and released by SEGA themselves.
Giratina’s dimension
"Not the 90's tokyo toy show version, that one is lost forever"
*i've been bamboozled*
The best thing about this prototype is easily Sonic's running sprites being aligned, resembling the ones from Sonic CD.
when i first saw a video of someone playing the sonic 1 prototype, i honestly thought it was fake from ghz to slz. but then i saw scrap brain being terribly unfinished and it reminded me of the unfinished mess of stages from the sonic 2 prototype, and i knew it must be real.
Sparkling Zone? More like Electric Soldier Sonic-Gon because God does that background hurt your Eyes.
Horrid Lorries123 Electric Soldier Sonic-Gon because God does that background hurt your Eyes Zone.
True, but it has a nice aesthetic and vibe though
I remember hoping for 5 years for this prototype...
2021 is the best year ever
Uhhh
Imagine if SEGA was Hiding The '90 Tokyo Toy Show ROM So It Could Be Released For Sonic's 30th Anniversary as To Show Where It Began? If a Sonic 1 Prototype Was Found, there Could Be a Super Slim Chance That Maybe the Tokyo Toy Show ROM Can Be Found or Sega Finally "Finding" it. I Don't Know but Could Happen
That would make Sega one of the best video game companies ever. However i personally dont think thats gonna happen.
2:51 Fun fact; The layout gif present on the proto's TCRF page is actually an edit I did of a partially-recreated layout that was posted in 2018, on one of Sonic 1's prerelease pages (as it was based on VHS footage that featured a bit of gameplay in this early Special Stage). The gif here is partially-fixed from my revision, as I missed that me copy-pasting the whole bottom area made the lower-right yellow blocks inanimate. This error was fixed soon after, except one of the yellow blocks doesn't blink blue.
5:05 Also you misspelt that as "Sparlking".
Sparkling zone's old background makes it look more like casino night zone from sonic 2
It would have caused liability for seizures.
this has to be the greatest sonic prototype discovered ever
I think the Sonic 3 Proto with the ORIGINAL MUSIC is the greatest. So much new content has been made from that.
@@CaptainCoolzCT- also there were new sprite reveals and more.
Fun fact: not even the first sonic game is started and there is a glitch on the titelscreen: The " Press Start" in the final game wasnt show due to a glitch where the game text uses the same memory as the "Press Start" Text so it goes unused. But in this prototype the "Press Start" Text dosnt zse the same memory so it is seen in this prototype.
the ROM is actually chock full of little secrets and mysterious pieces of code, this is probably THE most interesting prototype I've had a look at, definitely worth more research
I hope that THE sonic 1 prototype is found one day
Eh, the TTS build is very unlikely but the CES build tho...
Hell yh what a great way to start the year, but whats even more epic is Novikia making more videoss!
"True and Honest"
Thank you 🙏 Blessed CWC
with it being an unfinished prototype & using an older physics engine, there remains a chance that all of the code & assets in the show cart are present here. i would suggest decompiling it until the purpose of every byte is recognized.
I kind of like the Sparkling Zone and the Labyrinth Zone old backgrounds more than the ones used in the final version.
I know it's impossible but i am REEEEEEEALLY rooting so someone find the Tokyo toy build of Sonic 1
Miracle can happen right?
Since Prototype of Sonic 1 was found
Anything could happen at this point, I really want the CES build to be dumped
After 15 years of searching for this prototype of Sonic 1 they finally got it
*Now it's time to find the Sonic 2 prototype!*
We already have that
There are already 5 we know about I think
The cartridge this prototype was taken from is now for sale on eBay.
7:55: So THAT's where the inspiration for those looping bottomless pits in Metropolis Zone came from.
Knowing that they found this already more information about it is cool
I like how you can jump in the act clear
2020: Luigi in Mario 64
2021: Sonic 1 prototype
Apparently the REALLY cool early Sonic prototypes are lost forever, according to Yuji Naka and the original developers, the very early stuff was lost or not preserved at all.
Awesome video, instant like, fav, and sub!
Just a heads-up, the links in the description are messed up! ^^
We finally did it boys.
Im shaking and crying of joy rn
You said "thank god i dindt have to mace anyone" was that a chris chan reference?
Incredible! This so exciting!
Tbh thou it just seems the 1990 prototype is long gone if Yuji Naka himself says it might be gone forever probably means either that or i hope it’s somewhere
In Act 3, if you take the wrong path, the camera locks and you can't move.
Also most levels have layout differences; even GHZ.
I wonder if Patmac has seen this yet!!
"it was made close to the release date but is still unfinished"
wow, who knew Sega back then predicted Sega now
Wow this year isn't starting as bad as last year.
Uhhh Byedemwit cheated it’s awful
i never thought this day would ever come. never.
Clock Ork Zone.
We finally did it
I nearly shit my dick thinking it was the Tokyo Toy Show build. I can't die until that build gets found, Bayonetta 3 is released, and we have mech suits.
Not the build I was expecting but an excellent find nevertheless. Lots of interesting stuff in this.
Scrap Brain Zone 3 IS Labyrinth Zone in the full release. It’s just a different color than the normal Labyrinth Zone. So that’s actually not different
Aww, why is this prototype so similar to the final build? I like having unused things in Sonic prototypes!
I FUCKING SPIT MY WATER THIS MAD MY DAY THANK YOU SO MUCH
You dont make sense, this mad my day. That doesn't makes sense

Nothing like taking a look at early builds, it's always interesting.
Btw, narrantion/voices in Stereo sound kinda weird. You should try to Mono and center out your voice tracks since that works better for that kind of audio.
I have to, right now I only have my phone to record voice! But I need to get into audio editing more! Thanks a lot!
@@Novika75 Ah that's what I thought actually, I use my phone to record too sometimes lol. But even then you should be able to Mono the track and it should sound just fine I think. Even then, thanks for the vid anyway, always good to see more Sonic content.
No way!!! That's incredible!
Hidden Palace: Let's start 2021 with everyone screaming of joy seeing the Sonic 1 Prototype Dumped!!!!

1:27 It's Over 9,000!
This is 2021 but it sounds like the audio was recorded in 2010.
You say that like it's a bad thing.
Call it dumb faith, but I have a feeling that in a few years, we might get at least some footage of the Tokyo Toy show version. Then we could get a recreation hack like with the shoshinkai Mario 64 build
I am 100% certain that I played a rom-hack that was basically one to one with everything I saw in this prototype? I don't think I'll be able to find it right now, but if anyone knows more about it, please let me know. Was it some sort of fan recreation of this prototype before it was actually discovered?
EDIT: I actually found the romhack I mentioned, it's called Sonic 1 Beta Remake.
thank you for informing my left ear
I Played it and I uploaded on UA-cam for A Quick Andres Plays Video for this Prototype!
What if the Tokyo Toy Show demo is on a actual computer and not a cart? If you have seen how they made Sonic 1 they had a actual genesis controller hooked up to a pc and such.
3:21 thats the biggest sin this whole world has ever seen
You know what would be more crazy? After a few months or so they find the CES builds and the TTS 1990 prototype :D edit: *AND THEY MAKE IT FOR FREE!!!!!!!*
There aren't many people like Buckaroo, willing to give it out for free. Other sonic 1 prototypes are likely in the hands of private buyers that likely won't share the prototype or will have it be available but for a ridiculous price.
Now we need the first sonic 1 prototype
Its lost forever
@@coolbob863 we don't know
OMG WHAT WOW THAT’S SO COOL
I legitimately thought this was the Tokyo toy show prototype
2:31 So I guess Sonic mania had that same exact sprite from the Sonic prototype.
What!?!?!?!? The Sonic 1 Prototype? Noice!
WOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAH!
*How do they DO this shit!*
*Oh wait, it isn't the Tokyo Show one? Oh*
They estimated the date of this prototype to be December of 1990.
I like the background of sparkling Zone more than spring yard Zone.
You like killing your eyes? That background is awful.
@@gamingnubs7628 okay, there are a bunch of flashing lights. But other than that I find it more aesthetically pleasing.
@@arcadejaguar409 if they remove the flashing, then i absolutely agree.

A great way to end a horrible year within 2020, and a great way to begin Sonic's 30th Anniversary.
Hopefully one day, the folks at Sega DO finally find the 1990 Tokyo Toy Show prototype, but I seriously doubt it. That's wishful thinking right there.
