  • Living Colour is an American rock band formed in New York City in 1984.
Formation and Early Years: The band was founded by guitarist Vernon Reid, who aimed to blend punk, funk, and heavy metal with socio political commentary. The original lineup included Corey Glover on vocals, Muzz Skillings on bass, and William Calhoun on drums.
Breakthrough with "Vivid": Their debut album, "Vivid," released in 1988, was a critical and commercial success. It featured the hit single "Cult of Personality," which won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1990. The album's success was partly due to its innovative sound and the band's willingness to address racial and social issues.
Musical Style: Living Colour is known for its fusion of hard rock, funk, and jazz, often incorporating complex rhythms and guitar work. Their music is characterized by its heavy use of funk and jazz elements within a rock framework, setting them apart from many contemporaries.
Subsequent Albums: Following "Vivid," they released "Time's Up" in 1990, which continued their exploration of social themes with tracks like "Type." However, their third album, "Stain," released in 1993, did not achieve the same commercial success, leading to the band's initial breakup in 1995.
Reunion and Later Career: Living Colour reunited in 2000 and has since released several more albums, including "Collideøscope" in 2003, "The Chair in the Doorway" in 2017, and "Shade" in 2022. Their later work has seen them continue to evolve their sound while maintaining their signature style.
Impact and Legacy: Living Colour is often credited with breaking racial barriers in rock music, proving that rock could be a genre for musicians of all backgrounds. Their influence can be seen in various bands and artists who have followed, blending genres and addressing social issues through music.
Living Colour remains active, with their music and live performances continuing to attract fans who appreciate their unique blend of musical styles and their commitment to social commentary.

Good overview gents. As I hear them:
    6. Collideoscope
    5. Shade
    4. Chair in Doorway
    3. Time's Up
    2. Vivid
    1. Stain
The only version of "Biscuits" to own is the European released version. Crazier fact: I'm in the "Open Letter to a Landlord" video at the 3:29 mark (when everyone had hair...).

Time’s Up is my favorite album by them too, I saw them at the first Lalapalooza, they were great live, one of their best covers is the Bad Brains Song “Sailin’ On” which they did live when I was them.

Was floored when i first heard Vernon Reid, at a performance here in Goa, with the Jay Hoggard (vibist) band. Ever since, i have been tracking all his side projects. This band, with much talent, was nice and tight only to wither away. For those wanting to dip their feet in other genres feat Vernon, check out the bands Free Form Funk Freqs and Memphis Blood with James Blood Ulmer.
Thanks Grant and great to have George Lamie here too after Sea of Tranquillity, where George's depth unfolds

I love Living Colour! Going to see them for the fourth time next month with Extreme. My favourite show was seeing them in a small club and after the show they hung around their merch booth selling and signing copies of “Chair in the Doorway”.

Great show. Saw them here in UK back in 1991, must have been the Time's Up tour. They were good live but just never followed them much after that. Have some listening to do. Love Rears was a bit of a hit here, ended up in the top 20.

Saw Living Colour earlier this year opening for Extreme in Memphis at the Graceland Sound Stage. I felt their live power very much but they were only given 35 minutes to play-they couldve easily done and hour cause it was a good 90 mintes before Extreme took the stage....I hope to see theem again in a longer show somewhere...

I saw em open for The Stones in Foxboro, where they were happily received, and the wind was not yet terrible. I bought Vivid and the one after that, on cassette. I wanted to point out that they may be in a media fold. The vast majority of my music purchases are vinyl, and cassette represented Walkmans, boomboxes, and car stereos. When the big two came out, cassette was king.

My and my buds at UGA in 1988 became hooked on the CoP video and we ate up that first record for a year and half straight. Saw them live in ATL in front of 2,000 folks and they were brilliant and powerful. 2nd record was almost as good and I listened to it for a year or so...by the time the 3rd record was out I'd lost most interest and rarely listened to them.
Still return occasionally to 8-10 songs from first 2 records. They'll always be in my rotation. Will Calhoun was/is a beast btw!

They were a HUUUGE band with my circle of friends. I was in freshmen in college in 93 and we had Vivid, Time's up, and Stain on constant rotation. I agree with pretty much all of the points you guys made. I think if they had another big single hit like Cult of' their history would of changed and perhaps became a bigger more successful band. I love them regardless. My ranking would be:
    1Times Up
    2Vivid
    3Stain
    4The Chair
    5.Shade
    6.Collideoscope

havent listened to them for a while,im a fan.came from the black rock coalition movement, right up my street musically at the time.some of vernon reids other works interest me a bit more now, ronald shannon jackson/tony williams lifetime project with jack bruce/cindy blackman santana etc one of those guys that can jump between rock and fusion.they sounded like they were influenced by tackhead, who were before living colour, doug wimbish original band kind off heavy ,funk rock with vocal samples etc no singer, later bernard purdie on vocals, more song orientated stuff, the albums friendly as a hand grenade, and follow up strange things, show the different approaches, check em out.corey glover laid down some cool vocal tracks on jane getters last 2 albums, which are well worth checking out

Am i the only one that liked living colour pre first album more than the average metal band they became once they got a record deal... i remember the first tape of them i got in 85 that stuff was mindblowing... everything after that was just bland product to finance all their other more interesting side projects.
