It doesn't matter if you are a 300 lbs man, or a 90 lbs women. You need to learn with the easier stuff and work your way up. Your first gun should not be a Desert Eagle
***** Same thing in Canada.... Except we take it even more seriously with equal ground laws. If I have a gun and the robber has a knife, well guess what, I have to put away my gun, grab a knife, and fight him like a fucking duel.... If not I get charged with deadly assault, even if I was in my home defending me and my family. It’s practically illegal to defend yourself in Canada. There was a story from Toronto about a man who came home to see a home invasion in progress. He grabbed a baseball bat and took a swing at the guy. I don’t remember if he hit the robber or not, but the crook ran off, then turned around and successfully pressed assault charges against the man.
HirachieOfSociety Man... that's silly, maddening, and depressing all at the same time. What are you supposed to do if you're a 95 lb woman, being attacked by a 300 lb man-mountain who is perfectly capable of beating you to death with his bare hands? Grow bigger like the freaking Apache Chief from the "Super Friends" cartoon? If you have a reasonable expectation that this encounter could end your life the variety of deadly force you use in return should not matter. Deadly force is deadly force.
Attitude is everything. I use to do martial arts for fitness / hobby & I've been abused by some mothers claiming "we" just want to teach their children to hurt ppl. We only taught options ok, if your child is so irresponsible to want to hurt ppl then that is a poor reflection on their parenting.
As if you need skill or a gun to hurt people. Couple bike locks and a can of gas'll net a higher body count than walking into the building with a rifle.
Although it's completely possible to be responsible with martial arts, it must also be said that many do really just get involved in them to kick ass. After all, just ask the Asians. They have centuries of history of big dojo regions having Kung Fu gang wars because all the teenagers in the town know martial arts and want to use it and see who's is the best. There's a reason why the military skimps on basic forces hand to hand training, they found that all the highschool kids they taught it to starting fighting and next thing you know your own forces are crippled because everyone was kicking each other's ass instead of working together.
I'm new to this channel, but, I wanted to thank you guys for all of the invaluable information. I'm sorry to hear about Barry's passing; he was entertaining and informative. He exuded warmth and amiability.
Children are very creative and curious, neither should be underestimated...when they are people get hurt. In my opinion, leaving a gun out like that is a recipe for disaster. I don't see why a "gunvault" mounted near your bed is not close enough and accessible enough unless you are sleeping at a bus station where things like door locks, deadbolts, a dog, a house alarm being breached is not enough time to get ready.
Agreed. That was the only thing in the vid I took issue with - never, I repeat NEVER underestimate a child's drive and curiosity. Give em enough time, they'll figure it out. Humans, particularly young humans, have an insatiable appetite for new and interesting things. Firearms are unfortunately no exception
There's adults that can't figure it out, and probably 90% of college students. I've seen adults struggle with slide racking. During the day, keep the gun on your person or up where they can't get to it.
My first firearm was a 1911 when I was 13. I was living in the rural swamps of Florida and the sheriffs knew I carried it on me all the time and never batted an eye because of the huge alligator population in our area. I ended up shooting 3 gators before my 14th birthday and one of the deputies was in the area when I shot my second one and we loaded it into the back of his cruiser and helped me cook it when he was off duty that night. That is how America needs to be again and it sickens me to the core to know one of my favorite States went democrat and is now erasing it's citizens rights.

I wish Canada allowed law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons and remove the restrictive laws. My province (Newfoundland) has had it's crime rate skyrocket in the past few years. Just last night we had an 18 year old teen jump a fence and stab an 11 year old boy in the neck. Our gang/drug violence has increased to ridiculous levels that it's hard to sum up the courage to walk into the capital city. So much envy for the USA.
It is very sad that here in Canada we are not allowed to defend our home and /or family. If you do so you will be going to jail for a long time. I love my country but its gun laws are ludicrous.
jeff ferguson I hear ya man. if there was one thing I could change, it would be the right to personal protection in my home. Although if it really came down to it, I would rot in jail over losing my wife and kids anyday
An exception to 'flashing a gun' - my wife's mother lived in rural Florida and a man came to her door and asked if she was there alone (she was), but she reached behind a framed photo and presented a .22 revolver and said "just baby and me". The potential perp just turned and ran away.
I love the flatcap Barry. It's style is from Northern England. Reminds me of my dad, who although born in Scotland, lived in Newcastle upon Tyne all of his adult life apart from when he was in Blackwatch. Thanks for bringing back that memory.

Great video!!!! I'm a Philadelphia police officer (through no fault of ours) we always arrive on the scene after the fact. A cop's "immediat presence" is the only thing that really defers crime! Once a cop turns that corner and drives away, the public is on their own. If you can see a police car or an officer walking his/her beat....your safe. But if you don't see a cop car or police officer around you, then your on your own.
Freedom Inc. in Portland the cops have accepted the fact the politicians & prosecutors would rather throw a cop under a bus rather than support them... Many good officers have moved on to other opportunities... And your left with the ones hired to satisfy diversity programs.... Good Luck...
I miss Barry. The more people who understand gun functionality and the responsibility of gun ownership, the better, and Barry was always clear and concise on those points.
Thank you Berry for making me reflect on this stuff before I was even old enough to own and possess a firearm. To this day I continue to take Erik's, Chad's and your teachings with me. Rest in Peace.
Children are very smart these days. Never leave a gun on the night stand and the magazine on the other side. Believe me they'll figure it out, especially w/ these smart phones parents so reluctantly let their young ones wander off with for hours
The woman he mentioned said she had a toddler. Rough definition of a toddler, is 2 - 3 years old. There's a big difference between very smart children and a toddler. As the toddler grows, she will need a better plan.
Teach them to use them and the dangers of them and you won't have to worry about them. My kids are proof of this and why even kids who are not around guns still should have some training like what if they find a gun while they are playing.
@@JasonTate86 That’s my view on them too. I would much rather know if one of my sons friends tries to show off a gun that my son knows how to handle and clear it. I live in the Peoole’s Democratic Republic of New Jersey…. And I was traumatized by a break in robbery we had when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. As soon as I turned 18…. I jumped all 50 hurdles NJ makes you do before you can buy a gun. I’m 37 now and thank goodness I never had to use it in a break in robbery or something similar. But I do go practice whenever the budget allows… things have gotten so expensive (May of 2023).
I strongly disagree with the "A child is not gonna figure all that out". I was building Lego from an early age on. If I had seen a gun with the mag in just once, and I would have seen them separated later? You bet your ass I would have stuck the mag in the gun. I am very much pro gun ownership, but that sentence up there? Yeah, that's bull.
The problem is that just about every kid has seen his favorite action hero manipulate a pistol slide. They WILL copy that. If you have firearms in your home, your kid MUST respect it's dangers. And if you have to go and buy a cute little piglet and shoot it in the head in front of the kid, that trauma is still better than them shooting one of their friends by accident. Personally, I will make it a point to give my kids the guns to hold (unloaded, of course) to lessen the pull of the forbidden and curiosity. I will also instruct them how to touch a gun that they don't yet know if it is unloaded or not. I will also teach them to put it down if it should be loaded. And if they wish to shoot, I will take them to the range. Children can be easily taught how to do things right. What is hard is teaching them not to do something they wish to do at all. That is why abstinence as a contraception method works so horribly bad.
I haven't watched an old video with Barry in it for a long time. I forgot how amazing he was. I'm so glad he spread his knowledge and wisdom as long as he could. We all miss you Barry. Rest in peace.
Barry was right and generous to share his truth while he still could. 9:25 "If the criminals didn't think we owe them something, they wouldn't be stealing from us. We owe them nothing, absolutely nothing. They have bad upbringing, ... a lot of people are just wired wrong."
i dont want to have to kill someone in defense, but if it comes down to it my family's lives are more important than a thief of killer and thats that. if i have to live with the thought i took someone lives ill deal with it so long as my family is alive.
Commodor Jack That really is sad, you should be able to pelt them just into submission if you don't fancy being a killer. How about beanbag rounds? few of those and they'll stay down.
Philip D "Pelting someone into submission" is a great way to find yourself on the ass end of a civil suit. If a situation arises in which lethal force is necessary, you're better off using whatever level of force necessary to end said threat, and not worrying about whether they're alive. Just stop the threat, and call 911.
If you need a safety on your gun, you're not responsible enough to own a gun or have a child. That's a pearl of wisdom right there. I remember as a child, my dad setting a shotgun in a corner by the back door and telling me, "You see my shotgun? If you even touch it, I'll know, and I'll whip your ass." And he would have. He kept a fine coat of oil on it. Once a friend was over and he said, "Look a gun!" and put a hand on it. I had a hysterical screaming fit at him before he could even pick it up. Then I waited all afternoon for dad to get home. "I didn't touch your gun, David touched it before I could stop him!" Dad looked at me and said, "David isn't allowed to come in this house again." End of story.
anybody else ever get the impression that Barry has been through some shit? idk he just seems like the kinda guy that's been in a shady poker game one too many times
One thing that every person who uses a firearm to protect their home needs to remember. Identify your target before you fire at them. They might be your kid sneaking out of the house.
You guys are spot on. I hear so many "I want to scare them." They want a shotgun because they think when they pump it, it'll scare criminals. While I think most agree on a shotgun for home defense, it should be loaded with one in the chamber. If I'm grabbing mine to protect my loved ones, someone will likely be shot. My goal isn't to simply scare criminals.
"The greatest victory is the battle not fought". Most criminals are cowards and if you can scare them off without shooting then that is much better result then having to explain yourself to the police who already label us gun owners as killers with itchy trigger fingers. I've had two break-ins in the past when I lived in a rough part of town and that son of a bitch ran out the back door as quick as a flash when they heard the pump action of my Mossberg at the top of the stairs. No-one got hurt and nothing got stolen and my landlord FINALLY replacing the dodgy back door that the criminal kicked in.
***** My wife had a similar experience. 1 pump and they run. Can't always rely on that. Some people are crazy and high, but it's much better to not have to fight. My neighbor said she was thinking of buying a gun but didn't think she could kill someone to protect her life or possessions. Someone asked, "What if your kids or grandson were home." She replied, "I wouldn't even hesitate." Interesting mindset.
If you can buy gun thug who will assault you can as well And contrary to popular belief criminals don’t use black market guns they buy them in stores. “black market” is just a buzz word any way. Go buy gun in store Then report it as stolen but sell it to some guy then he sell it to criminal bum criminal have black market gun. Hurr you couldn’t stop him from getting it. No you could. No legal guns =/ hard to get illegal one. Not that I wish for guns to be illegal. I’m gun enthusiast myself but guns aren’t for protection if you have to have gun to feel safe in peace time you live in failed state.
MrMleczkp Many of us don't feel that we NEED guns to be safe. I use mine to hunt, but with all the guns on the market the last 200 years it is unfeasible to simply ban guns. Even if it happened, there would still be millions of guns out there. Also, gun shows and friends are where most criminals get guns. I think gun shows should be more regulated.
Han Solo You would shit your pants and not do anything you are just one of the thousands of gun nerds on you tube talking about what you would do "if". luckily for you we both know its just a fantasy and the opportunity will never come up when you need a fire arm..
First time coming across this account and Barry, sad to see that he’s not with us anymore. Seemed like a very intelligent and wise man. Still teaching valuable lessons from beyond the grave🙌🏻🇺🇸
Terrible advice on the leave the magazine 10 feet away comment, get a portable gun safe, a small one, I think they make ones that read fingerprings, or at least a digital lock, trust me the extra 5 seconds is well worth the huge safety trade off.
Those are both bad ideas. Keeping your magazine across the room or keeping your gun in a safe are both bad ideas defensively. If you are not using your gun as home defense, then by all means keep it in a safe. If it is for defense than you need to be able to have it ready extremely quickly or it will do you no good. If you have children that you need to worry about than there are better options out there that meet both criteria. I'm not going to spend an hour listing them all here as it's easy to research. But if someone enters your home while you are sleeping you may not know it until they are opening your bedroom door. All the time you may have is how long it takes for them to cross your bedroom, sometimes less. Having a gun won't always save you either. But most times will at least give you a fighting chance.
how about a mid size 357 magnum for a "starter" gun? this way they can start off with .38 special and when they feel brave they can put 357 magnum in it? is that sensible?
Bravo, good, I did so several years ago and I recommend it. 357 is more fun to shoot (after a raisonable progression by 38 WC, 38 FMJ /SP and 38+P). But be aware, a 357 mag with 165 dB of noise for self defence without hearing protection will definitively destroy your ears, stay on 38 special, 156 dB destroys (a little) less...
DJNEMP yay then i shall do that hwen i move to pennsylvania and out of this police state known as MD where my neighbors stopped talking to me when i found a 100+ year old .32 revolver at a construction site last year. they really did stop talking to me because i didnt have to register it because its so old. as far as they are concerned, im an illegal gun owner while by the law standard i am not.
i wish i live in america man, im in Canada, and i had been waited five months for my firearm license to be approved, and still waiting, called firearm department couple times, but they keep telling me its in process.
People have gotten soft. I dont want to hurt anyone. But the guy breaking in your house dont care. Folks need to wake up and protect their home and family
Bull ship! A child could figure that out. Maybe not your kid, but I've seen kids figure out more complicated things than that. That is not something I would feel comfortable leaving up to the intelligence of a child.
Unfortunately here in Australia, when obtaining a firearms licence and providing a reason for said licence and providing a reason for obtaining a firearm, self-defence/home-defense are not considered valid reasons for gun ownership/use.

Your first gun should not be a Desert Eagle
My first guns were desert eagles and I fired both of them akimbo style and it barely kicked
@@antonioangeconeb3196 your First words to me say that you are a fool.
I like that saying you guys used in another video. "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by six". Or something to that affect.
A quote by one of my law professors...
I always love rewatching this video even almost ten years later. Barry was the show. Rest In Peace Professor Barry.
I'm new to this channel, but, I wanted to thank you guys for all of the invaluable information. I'm sorry to hear about Barry's passing; he was entertaining and informative. He exuded warmth and amiability.
Welcome brother, and true...Barry was a good guy.
Xipo86 wow what a ignorant comment
I assume you meant valuable. Invaluable is the the opposite of valuable lol
Swipez no, the opposite of valuable is actually unvaluable...invaluable is something that is in fact more valuable than just "valuable"
@@EnkeiTenjin actually "invaluable" means so highly valued that one cannot set a value for it.
The nightstand idea relies on underestimating your child's intelligence. Let's not do that.
Exactly. Most kids figure out how to get around or undue child safety locks, while the parent/parents struggle with them.
I can't agree with you more

Same!! Barry had quite a few memorable quotes that will always stay with me and its an honor.

This came across my feed … I watched this channel with Barry when I first bought my first gun nearly 12 years ago.. RIP Barry.. still missed
An exception to 'flashing a gun' - my wife's mother lived in rural Florida and a man came to her door and asked if she was there alone (she was), but she reached behind a framed photo and presented a .22 revolver and said "just baby and me". The potential perp just turned and ran away.
But what if the perp didn’t stop that’s the point is she prepared to do what it takes especially with a .22 which means aim for the head
I love the flatcap Barry. It's style is from Northern England. Reminds me of my dad, who although born in Scotland, lived in Newcastle upon Tyne all of his adult life apart from when he was in Blackwatch. Thanks for bringing back that memory.

Appreciate the insight officer.

I miss Barry. The more people who understand gun functionality and the responsibility of gun ownership, the better, and Barry was always clear and concise on those points.
This needs to be required viewing for high schoolers and those looking for their 1st gun. Decades of wisdom flowing from this man.
Thank you Berry for making me reflect on this stuff before I was even old enough to own and possess a firearm. I am confident now at 21 in my ownership and my responsibility as a CCW carrier to handle and use a firearm if need arises thanks to you. To this day I continue to take Erik's, Chad's and your teachings with me.
Rest in Peace.
Miss you Barry. RIP sir. I hope you can see how many of us valued you.
Children are very smart these days. Never leave a gun on the night stand and the magazine on the other side. Believe me they'll figure it out, especially w/ these smart phones parents so reluctantly let their young ones wander off with for hours
Mine are smart enough to keep their hands off. I take them shooting any time they want, so I don't have to worry about their curiosity
And that it’s nothing special for him and can tell his friend to put it back. My son is 13 and he has access to a 38 special in my car if he every needs it to protect himself or his brother just in case
If you have a toddler why not have a barometric handgun safe on the nightstand

I live in the Peoole’s Democratic Republic of New Jersey…. And I was traumatized by a break in robbery we had when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. As soon as I turned 18…. I jumped all 50 hurdles NJ makes you do before you can buy a gun. I’m 37 now and thank goodness I never had to use it in a break in robbery or something similar. But I do go practice whenever the budget allows… things have gotten so expensive (May of 2023).
Besides the point but it's DPRK / PRC
I strongly disagree with the "A child is not gonna figure all that out". I was building Lego from an early age on. If I had seen a gun with the mag in just once, and I would have seen them separated later? You bet your ass I would have stuck the mag in the gun.
I am very much pro gun ownership, but that sentence up there? Yeah, that's bull.
I agree with you one hundred percent .Children are very creative and aware sometimes
you would still have to pull back the slide back but i see what you mean.
Dakota Stowe First shot is double action, don't need to pull the slide
you still need to rack the slide to put one in the chamber but okay.
I have a Bersa Thunder 380, one of the best guns I own. Love it.

Barry was right and generous to share his truth while he still could. 9:25 "If the criminals didn't think we owe them something, they wouldn't be stealing from us. We owe them nothing, absolutely nothing. They have bad upbringing, ... a lot of people are just wired wrong."
i dont want to have to kill someone in defense, but if it comes down to it my family's lives are more important than a thief of killer and thats that. if i have to live with the thought i took someone lives ill deal with it so long as my family is alive.
sadly in most states you lose the lawsuit if you dont kill
i dont want to kill someone, but i also dont want to pay taxes
Commodor Jack That really is sad, you should be able to pelt them just into submission if you don't fancy being a killer. How about beanbag rounds? few of those and they'll stay down.
BNC Reptiles couldnt agree more
Philip D "Pelting someone into submission" is a great way to find yourself on the ass end of a civil suit.

One thing that every person who uses a firearm to protect their home needs to remember. Identify your target before you fire at them. They might be your kid sneaking out of the house.
Or your kid sneaking into the house.
Or some punk sneaking into your daughters room. In which case, fire away!

Barry, we miss you
You guys are spot on.
*****
My wife had a similar experience.
If you can buy gun thug who will assault you can as well
And contrary to popular belief criminals don’t use black market guns they buy them in stores. “black market” is just a buzz word any way. Go buy gun in store
Then report it as stolen but sell it to some guy then he sell it to criminal bum criminal have black market gun.
MrMleczkp
Many of us don't feel that we NEED guns to be safe. I use mine to hunt, but with all the guns on the market the last 200 years it is unfeasible to simply ban guns. Even if it happened, there would still be millions of guns out there.
Also, gun shows and friends are where most criminals get guns. I think gun shows should be more regulated.

Always come back for Barry's wisdom 🙏 thankyou

Bravo, good, I did so several years ago and I recommend it. 357 is more fun to shoot (after a raisonable progression by 38 WC, 38 FMJ /SP and 38+P).
But be aware, a 357 mag with 165 dB of noise for self defence without hearing protection will definitively destroy your ears, stay on 38 special, 156 dB destroys (a little) less...
