2024 Volkswagen Atlas + Cross Sport In-Person First Look

- Опубліковано 23 лип 2024
- The Volkswagen Atlas has received a second refresh for the 2024 model year. Tweaked exterior details and an all-new interior dashboard design gives the brand's largest model a modern update. Also, for both the regular Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport, the V6 is gone. The new engine is a single 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 269 horsepower. Let's take a (rather noisy, unfortunately) first look.

6:34 I love how Alex never bothers to edit out his bloopers 😂
Oh gosh. Have you seen the Facebook page? So many spelling errors and other grammatical mistakes lol.
Legend
@@JakeRoot Honestly who cares? He’s a great reviewer, I‘ll deal with some spelling and editing mistakes, nobody’s perfect.
@@nothere572 Noticing and caring are two different things ... I've noticed, but don't care.
The exterior has always looked great on these. This looks even better imo. It’s a shame the interior now looks better but is plagued by a lackluster control interface. I’m surprised if this interior lasts a year with VW confirming to already working on bringing back physical knobs and controls to their lineup.
Oh good, they confirmed that? I LOVE my Jetta, and I love it because the interior is classy and functional, and I have actual knobs where needed. I hate the virtual interface for everything on slightly newer models.
@@LoveStallionat least i’m not the only one who hates the all touch interface on new model interiors.
Everything will be touch screen eventually
Wow, illuminated logo, what a significant improvement! I just called my dealer and ordered 20 Atlases.
Man Alex working hard this week!!!
Thank you Sr!!!!!
This has a LOT standard and very practical, love it. Would have liked to see some kind of hybrid option though, plus no capacative touch points.
I wish they'd offer the 3.0T at least as an option. The Atlas is just too lethargic in most settings. I get that most buyers don't care for bracket racing their family truckster, but there is no way this thing would be comfortable towing 5K pounds with people inside.
All of that aside, the interior is a MAJOR step up in quality, finish, and design. Seems like VW is moving away from their hard-angke styled interiors for a more premium design.
Thanks for bringing this to us Alex! Because of your review, I got the 2022 Atlas for my growing family of five last year and love it! The 24 Atlas looks great, but I will be holding on to my 22 for a long time.
I still want a V6. The CX-90 looks promising.
The ambient lighting looks great.
Alex in your opinion what 3 row midsize do you like best? This, pilot, Cx-90, grand highlander, telluride, or palisade?
I love the refresh! I currently have 2019 SEL-P and love it better than the 2021 refresh. I was waiting for this to come! Happy to see a nicer interior and the HUD. I wish the seats were cooled and not just ventilated but I will still take ventilated over non ventilated. Can't wait to test drive one. Thanks Alex for your amazing work!
Thank you for enduring all that noise Alex, it would have driven me crazy.
2.0 L turbo for large 3-row SUV is perhaps good for euro/asia market... not US
Love the refresh. Not a fan of the all haptic controls or stubby shifter. I test drove a 2022 and loved the space. However I felt it was very slow. I'm hoping the new engine is peppier. Wished they given it the 3.0 turbo v6 from the Audi.
I'll be waiting on that Honda Pathfinder...lmaooo Great review Alex! Both cars look good! I really like the rear on the Altas Crossport!
Hi i really like the Atlas design. but for reliability would it be better to shop for a Mazda CX9 or 90? What are your thoughts?
Red and Blue paint looks fantastic
Personally I think all third row should be 2 seated like the atlas.
Most suv third row barely fit 2 yet auto maker always try’s to squeeze 3 people back there.
What is now the "base" trim? I assume that would be the SE? What's your best guess on pricing? Vr6 was a premium, but with that gone, is that cost taken up by standard heated steering wheel and heated and cooled seats?
Absolutely love the exterior updates!! Super sharp looking vehicle! I am disappointed by the lack of V6 as at LEAST an option...the Highlander is the ONLY other vehicle in the class with no V6.
The Honda Pilot also offers a V6
Subaru Ascent is 4 cylinder only
Yeah, Biden's emissions regulations will kill off all non-hybrid V6 internal combustion engines pretty soon. Its only a matter of time.
@@nothere572 whoops! Forgot about that one.
@@juelzm149 the ascent is irrelevant and junk
Atlas is the clearest case of the industry needing to move to bigger turbo 4 bangers. A 2.5T is a minimum for a 4000lb school bus
Until you add a bigger engine and everybody whines about the poor fuel economy. People don't know what they want. The Cadillac Escalade V had tons of power and guess what the biggest complaint is in every review? Every other sentence is about the poor gas mileage...blah! blah! blah! Well guess what? You can't have it both ways Jeeves.
@@krane15 The issue needs a balanced approach. When you have a small displacement engine, it has to run at higher RPMs to power a heavy vehicle. Putting in a larger engine may actually result in improved fuel economy, or an even better one.
Case in point: Subaru Crosstrek 2.0 has worse fuel economy than the same car with a 2.5 engine.
@@afcgeo882 I already know all that. What's more, you're example, is not typical. In general, the larger the engine (or more cylinders) the less fuel efficient it will be. Which I'm sure you already know.
Anyway, VW didn't simply choose to put a 4 in this vehicle just for the heck of it. All auto manufactures have to comply with strict government fuel economy regulations. Although to be fair, the 4 is VWs staple engine. Its used in different variants (high torque in this case) in just about every vehicle they build. Including their sister brands like Audi.
@krane15 the Atlas 2.0T gets worse gas mileage than all the similar crossovers with bigger engines (Ascent, CX-9, Highlander all have 2.4-2.5 liter turbo engines and get better mileage with more torque & performance). There are inefficiencies for going too big AND too small- too small means more boost, which needs more fuel to run safely (especially on 87 octane) which kills gas mileage. So for the same HP, being able to run 20-30% less boost with minimal added friction is more efficient.
@@krane15 I’m not the example. You just aren’t educated.
The power output on the 4cyl isn’t all that bad honestly. Taking away the V6 was dumb but adding a hybrid or even a 3.0T option would be cool.
People always want more cylinders without even realizing that VW is famous right now for the EA888 2.0 4cylinder. It’s infamously reliable, incredibly tunable and very efficient. V6s are a waste. If you’re doing a 6 make it inline.
@@Mean_Bean279 It would behoove you to study up on English before attempting to use it. “Infamously reliable?” 🤦♂️
Does the middle seats come only n two captain chairs too? I dont like them big seats like that…
Doesn't the Nissan Pathfinder also have that child seat latched tilt design? You've mentioned that feature on the Pathfinder for years
Much improved, let’s hope it is more fun to drive than the current gen. The beep beep upon opening the door will make one want to bust your ear drums out.
wonder what the 0-60 is on this new engine
The third row looks pretty high off the ground with pretty good thigh support looks good for smaller adults
@2:15 that toaster on the engine circa 1982 😅
Your outro still has 2022 in it :)
I have a 2018 SEL V6, it's been a great vehicle for our family and I love it. I like this update but don't love it. I was planning on replacing the Atlas this year with a new one but I'm now leaning towards the Mazda CX-90 PHEV.
Ventilated seats as standard definitely has my attention
Touch touch touch, wipe wipe wipe, touch touch, wipe, touch touch touch, wipe wipe, touch, wipe, touch, wipe.... those guys keeping them polished were right on your tail the whole time!! :D
absoluty AMAZING
“A new challenger has entered the Arena”! 😂 sorry but in all honesty someone at Honda is looking at all these refreshes and new vehicles coming out everyday and like wow we dropped the ball with the new Pilot interior. 😳😬
This is the only SUV I would've buy it Alex.
now that the interior has been redesigned, the Atlas an Atlas C.S are on my shopping list.
Very nice although I will say i'm very happy with my 2023 Atlas V6.
When will you get the Honda Pathfinder to drive? 😉
Honda Pilot or Nissan Pathfinder you meant...?
@@hynsum I know what I meant. Alex made an oops in the video.
@@hynsum better watch the whole video till the end.
I thought they were going to stop these Haptic Touch buttons? Guess not
By the time they made that announcement, this design had already been signed off, suppliers contract signed. Car development takes years not days.
It’s interesting to see that VW doesn’t really do a hybrid trim for the Atlas.
The Korean twins still look bigger on the inside and more techie
Vs thr grand highlander
Did you happen to see if they finally put in a heads up display in it? I think the Atlas is the last big SUV not to have one.
He did say at the end of the video that it does have one 👍
@@Katieandcabot thanks
A special windshield/coating is required. The viewing angles are limited. The projector shakes when the vehicle shakes, resulting in blurry images. They don't work for vertical windows and windshields, making them unsuitable for buses, RVs, trucks, or vans in most cases.
@@melissacole8697 Then why did they put it in the ID7? Ive used HUDs before and never seen this "shake" that you speak of.
I really like VW vehicles, I used to have a few, but I went with the 2022 Kia Sorrento SX because I don't need a family cruiser and like the look and the performance, but I would like the VW Atlas Sport if I were to buy a second car.
I’ll be honest. I have the 2022 Golf GTI autobahn and it has the same infotainment show here. It look gorgeous but honestly it’s a hazard down the road as operating it takes your eyes off the road for far to long.
VW management:
"Atlas isn't selling well bc it is one of the least reliable models, how do we fix this?"
"Let's reduce the engine size by 40% but keep the tow rating the same, add our new infotainment and electronics that have proven to be even less reliable than before, remove all buttons and light up the logo!"
“Take the grille off the last-gen Pilot, and headlight module from the Acadia. That’s what moved those vehicles; people will buy ours!”
Adding in the 4cylinder might increase reliability massively. If it’s the EA888 then it’s pretty bulletproof at this point.
My 2021 Cross Sport was in and out of the shop. VWoA refuse to buy it back until I hired a lemon attorney. They are not an honest manufacturer and do not stand by their product.
@@Mean_Bean279 I would be surprised if it is anything other than the ea888, which has been available in the Atlas since 2018. (I own one.)
The Atlas reliability has gone way up. I drive a 22 Tiguan S, and it's been really solid.
He forgot to mention that heated steering wheel is standard now too in all trims.
The grand Highlander imo beats this in most ways. No v6 in the atlas means no reason to get it over the turbo grand Highlander
Havent you been saying the GH was going to be DOA or DFL when it debuts? What changed?
and no hybrid option in VW either
@@ALMX5DP I was saying it’ll be doa. I wouldn’t say in entirely wrong but I’m a lot less disappointed than I was expecting to be. I’m not a fan of the interior quality and the lack of luxury features and the expected high price tag, but it looks really good
@@naveenthemachine not sure what your definition is of "dead on arrival" but seems much different than mine if you now feel it's a better buy than the Atlas. Not sure either if you've had a chance to sit in it yet to actually determine interior quality or you're just saying that.
@@ALMX5DP the big turnoff of the GH interior is the hard plastic dashboard and that there are hard plastics between the upper sill and armrest.
Ford influence is coming through on the exterior design indeed
Yep definitely saw Expedition at first glance
ford expedition vibe
I'm ready for cars to come back into fashion.
I didn't see the enginge in that huge space under the hood.
Capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel 👎🏼
This is on the bottom of my list the only thing I’ll get this over is highlander and ascent
The vr6 was an amazing engine im sad to see it go
I hope this isn’t the final product. No volume knob?
Looked at the last one right up until I saw premium required on a 30k car
Dash looks like last gen 5 series circa 2015 model year
LOUD NOISEEESS
That bumper reflector and fake exhaust is on the current one. Source: the one in my garage.
Will buy this if TDI is an option
If you are in the states there is no TDI for Volkswagen. last year was 2015 for TDI engines, then dieselgate hit and VW got rid of the diesel engines in the US.
@@RazgrizF14D yeah I just keep driving mk4 ‘03 ALH wagon and golf. Dieselgate is BS. Nice exterior boxy Atlas design but my ‘16 Ford Flex is roomier and even boxier with twin turbo eco boost 365hp I can haul anything I want. And it drives like a wagon instead of an SUV. I had the non turbo with 287hp before, it was sluggish. I expect the same or worse from vw 2.0L turbo charger in a big body like Atlas. It needs a TDI option.
I sure hope that turbocharged four cylinder makes it accelerate with some authority and of course be more efficient.
Vw said it should be half a second faster but you can also get a tune for the 4 cyl pushing around 350 hp.
B E A U T I F U L 🎉
Hey Vw just a trix : if you want better fuel economy lower this useless hood too high . Unless parading in car shows is a priority which allows to place the 120V to 12v transformer over the engine
I grew up a VW kid, and then owned a couple as an adult, but I could never get over how fugly the Atlas was from the beginning. Now they’ve at least made it look much better.
Mechanics should be the VIP visitors of the Chicago autoshow, since they will get the most use & time with these junkers.
Nice vw
Test drove a 2023 R line. Really liked the overall presentation but the performance/power was extremely disappointing, so ended up with a Chevy Traverse Redline, which is actually really fun to drive. Unfortunately it seems this refresh did nothing to address the lethargy of this otherwise really nice vehicle.
I would’ve put the golf r/s3 version of the 2.0 in these things. Although power is adequate for 90 percent of people who drive these
I was just think the same. I'd even settle for a 10hp reduction for an increase in torque curve for SUV duty.
New front end looks like a Ford Explorer
Man, you are SLICK. Honda Pathfinder 😂
Next thing you know: Nissan Pilot.😂
I wonder how much the dealer will charge when the illuminated VW logo breaks.
I like the Cross Sport. But after owning 2021 SEL Premium, I had a number of issues with it, had it for repars over 6 times in 3k miles. Even the local dealership gave up on it and said it's lemon. VW of America refuse to buy it back so I had to hire a lemon attorney to get my money back. Will never touch VW again.
Looks like the Ford expedition mixed with F150
I’d rather the new Mazda CX-90 with its new inline 6 cylinder and 340 hp.
Heck yeah
Be my guest
They need to put the golf r engine in this…….
Much better improvement than the pre refresh
A PHEV in the Cross Sport would have been a nice boost to power and economy. 7:52
Everybody want power, but everybody complains about fuel economy.
There seems to be an explosion of 3 row vehicles despite the fact that many Americans are having fewer or no children. 😞 Can't wait for Alex to do a compro on them after he has test driven them all.
Kuddos to Volkswagen for not stuffing a 5” fake 8th seat in the back
Good luck changing the front lights after minor bumps. Welcome to $1500 headlight changes...
Honda passport. What did I said 😂
I'm glad vehicle manufacturers don't make the lit-up emblems mandatory....just screams AutoZone to me...but I must say that VW pulls it off better than MB.
I wish the automakers and Journalists would come clean about the small displacement turbos fuel economy. The real fuel economy no the lab derived one. Real one is always way lower than advertised .
it seems the people in the back ground are being RUDE. Hopefully your ok?
no PHEV version of the Cross Sport, despite having that available in Europe? seriously?! There's no other version worth bringing to the US, frankly. I thought that VW is going EV...
Is vw ever going to get around to making the shark fin antenna body color? The black just looks cheap as if vw does not care
I’d rather the US get the Touareg again and nix the Cross Sport.
I don't like the Cross Sport. The lowering of the roof (comparing to the regular) was a big miss for me.
A vehicle this size needs at least 300 h.p. I really like the Atlas but it's slow. The Cross Sport should be a more premium trim over the family version.
My family's old '97 Suburban with 5.7 V8 seemed to do just fine towing any of our trailers.
@@ALMX5DP a 5.7 V8 has much more instant torque than a tiny 2.0 engine that needs to build boost
@@Mgoblagulkablong OP simply mentioned 300hp. And "instant" vs momentary delay for torque should not really be too big of a deal breaker right? Especially given a turbocharged engine once building boost can make a flatter torque curve from lower in the rpm range versus an NA motor which needs some revs to build.
Not sure why mainstream manufacturers insist on fake exhausts. It must be the marketing team… 😢 But the led logo is just soooo tacky… Not for me, a deal breaker for sure. Same goes for the ID4.
I’m most likely going to buy a Honda Pilot. I have a pontoon and a fishing boat to tow. No thanks 4 banger with a turbo.
VW did it again - put touch buttons and hated sliders for temp into new car. They promissed to ditch it and return to buttons - shame
The comments in here are proof that the industry is completely broken. The EA888 4cylinder is incredibly reliable and makes a ton of power with an excellent power band. V6s just don’t offer up much for SUVs like this. Not only that, but back before the HP race of the 2010s we had nothing but cars doing 9 second 0-60s and no one complained. Everyone has become so accustomed to more power without realizing the wear, stress and environmental impacts that places, not to mention increased fuel usage. This is a smart move by VW and others to size down.
Your comment shows you know NOTHING about engineering or mechanics. Turbo engines add lots of complexity and AKWAYS reduce reliability.
@@afcgeo882 Lmfao they clearly know more than you. Turbos don’t always equal a less reliable engine, it’s not 2005 anymore. The EA888 has been proven to be a solid engine.
@@nothere572 Prove it! Owners are complaining about it, constantly! It has been an absolute disaster in the Atlas and Tiguan!
Its known issues are intake valve carbon deposits (because the NA version never got dual injection), water pump failures, PCV valves, rear main seals, cylinders misfiring, overboost on the turbocharger, EVAP faults, fuel trim, O2 sensors, and many, many others.
The 1.8T EA888 were the reliable ones, not the 2.0T.
another clueless VW fanboy, turbo engines need time to build boost, that's a physical fact, you are denying it anyways
also it will get very hot with how hard it has to work in a vehicle this heavy
So new 4 cylinder only engine on a large vehicle. Absolutely would NOT buy this. Short term lease and give back after 3 years.
Well shit here’s another 4000LBS+ SUV with a 4cyl nice interior upgrade but no to the power train
They need to get rid of those ridiculous fake exhausts. Either hide them and point them down without the stupid bumper "exhausts" or simply run the tips through the bumper. This is a US market vehicle, we don't have the regulations that Europe has about exhaust having to point down. Surprised there is no V6 such as the Audi-derived V6 for those that want a little more power.
The illuminated emblem doesn't look cool, it looks gimmicky. But I have no issues with it as long as the owner has the ability to switch it off. I certainly wouldn't want to be driving to a high brow event with a glowing VW logo on the hood and rear. Even if it were a Bentley emblem it would still look gaudy.
Nice but underpowered!!!
Pass .
Buyers: Volkswagen, did you improve the reliability of the Atlas?
VW: Ja, we gave it lit up strips and logos!
2.0 litter engine, hmmm. 2.3 that more or less will be acceptable.
