The guy, I'm staying, whatever happens, happens. Sr, You can't stop lava, get out of its way or you get fried... Sad situation but that is one thing a man cannot stop a volcanic movement. Cracks in the road mean lave will be moving that way... Your life is worth living, getting out. Take your pets and what you need but get out of its way.. :\

You have to realize that the volcano itself is 10 miles away. Superheated lava is traveling underground, downhill ultimately to the Pacific. It’s such a beautiful area.

A rift eruption is almost always preceded by a floor collapse at Pu'u'o'o. Saw the same thing in 2017, 2016, 2014, and 2013. Pressure keeping the lava lake active suddenly drops because magma has found another route through the system. It's not really surprising that an outbreak would occur in the same area as it did before.

This so reminds me of the move "Volcano." Truly amazing footage. Let the truth be told, lava has been spewing from the Main Volcano since the early 80's. When I went on a plane tour there on the big Island in the 90's the lava was moving and going into the ocean adding on the the big island and has been doing so for many, many years but this aggressive flow/Eruption if something new. I pray for the residents here that this will end soon but I have a bad feeling it may not.

If this eruption already happened in years prior, why build houses near cracks and volcano zones? That makes no sense... I’d never buy a house/construct a house by a volcano or a fissure 🤔🤯

    • @Well_possibly
      @Well_possibly 6 років тому +9

Martha Tejeda, then no houses should be built on any of those islands, because they are volcanic islands. The same is true of many mountains, such as the one very close to Seattle, Washington, and elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest.
Where can you build when most places are prone to floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, below zero storms, hurricanes, or droughts?
I'm not mocking you, by the way. I know your sentiment was good.

This is part of the native Hawaiian creation story. Pele (Hawaiian goddess of fire and creation) is exercising her will. BTW, some comments seem to infer that people ringed the Kilauea crater with their homes. The homes that are threatened are miles away from the main crater. Lava travels through underground fissures and tubes and can appear miles away from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Still, you're kind of rolling the dice building in the Puna area on the Southeast side of the Big Island. Land tends to be less expensive on that side of the island. Thankfully this is the A-a, or slow moving type of lava and there is no pyroclastic cloud or explosion associated with it.

Most residence understand and even expect their place to be destroyed.
Dad's place was in danger during the last flow a couple years back, he and others fully understand at any time they're going to lose it all (home fully insured).
FYI, you generally have days, weeks if not over a month to escape, move, take away your belongings. It's a ~2mph freight train...you generally don't lose "everything you own" unless your one and only road gets cut off. Lose your home and land? Yes, but generally never your belongings.

You live next to a levee, everyone is surprise when flood waters take hundreds of homes. We're pretty safe here, very few deaths from lava on the big island, only 2 deaths that I know of, and both of those were indirect deaths resulting from people wanting to get an up close view

Lol Lelani Estates isnt even the remote part of Pahoa. There are other areas that are common to lava flows. The last one came out from a fissure about 5 miles up, and more easterly (closer to town). Thats why they're evacuating everyone. You cant pinpoint where lava will break out. If you think of it, this lava came from Halemaumau, which is miles up the mountain. Theres hwy 130, thousands of homes (thats been there for +30 years) that this lava had to travel under to get to this fissure.

Leilani Estates are one acre lots. Some streets are very sparsely populated, some streets have maybe 4 to 10 homes at the most. Look on the Leilani Estate community association map to see street names and general layout. One road in at the top, one road out at the bottom.

Zoning allows people to build right on top of an active volcano? All the Hawaiian islands are volcanoes.

I'm pretty sure if you can smell sulfur and see lava flying up in the air you are in a bad spot. Close to a volcano when it starts is a dangerous place.. Everyone is like "it happened so fast".. "now we are standing next to it waiting to see what happens"... Um pretty sure lava will turn you to ashes and that's if poisonous gas doesn't get you first.. But if a volcano opened up next to me I probably would try to get a sample of lava as long as I didn't have to die to get it.

Is this a new eruption, or just lava from Kilauea flowing through lava tubes and coming up here?

    • @ThatRandomBeast

Not a new eruption, but obviously it has moved a lot further down the rift.

This is no different than a hurricane that you cannot see. This is what everyone on that island hopes will never happen. You are seeing lives change and millions of dollars in potential damages. These are our people, watch with respect to their problem.
