    I spent 5 days on the Big Island. Only 4 hours at the volcano park. There is a lot to do besides volcanos. In fact, the opposite-side of the island had far-less rain while I was there. Beaches were beautiful.

    My parents (now divorced) had their honey moon in Hawai'i around 1989 right after an eruption (according to my mom). She used to tell me about going and seeing the lava flows and it always fascinated me, I would love to see it. That said, from NC, stay safe Lelani.

    If you own property and it gets covered with lava flow, are you still responsible for it? Do you have to pay taxes? can you eventually build on it again.? How does the insurance industry view the loss of a home due to lava flow? Would be important to know.

    • @chocwhite7724
      @chocwhite7724 6 років тому +7

      small footprint. no lava insurance, unfortunately. In fact, all the land the lava touches, That was previously theirs, is no longer theirs: it’s the governments.

      If lava burns your house down fire insurance covers it. If the ground breaks underneath your house earthquake insurance covers you. I was reading the ground is super cheap like 10K for a ocean view lot. But insurance premiums must be super high

      From what I can tell insurance will cover the cost of a home or the property, but it will not pay for lava and ash removal. I would keep the land, Ohia trees will break up the lava and bring in new vegetation fast.
      But I do believe in a lot of cases the land goes back to the government, but you get a nice check to move on.

    Since a lot of people make their living from tourism and Hawaii is a really big island with only a small part affected by the eruption, telling people not to change their plans to visit is logical. There are some who think that this is greed, but what would you do if feeding your family and paying your bills depended on tourists? Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closed up on the volcano, but the facilities in Hilo are open and the rangers are still giving educational lectures there. People can learn a lot about the volcanoes that make up the Big Island and the ones on the other islands by attending those lectures. You can still hike on Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and on Haleakala, over on Maui, if you want to hike on a volcano. The views from up there are incredible and well worth the visit. Kilauea is less than 1/5 of the island and isolated by Mauna Kea from the North Shore. It looks bad for the northeast tip of the island, but that is less than 1/10th of the whole island.

    A good report would be having the USGS Geophysicist outline the layers and makeup, old flows and possible lava tubes and crunch the numbers with 3D presentations of where the earthquakes have hit in the layers. Would be nice to know they have worked out what they are figuring by being labeled physicists not educated guessers.

      ladykiri42 --- Im the one whose made numerous calls to get a few families rescued, as well as posted phone numbers to those asking for help. Ive been in multiple state of emergency catastrophic situations myself. And I can tell you this. Nothing matters more than yours and your families lives. Nothing. That being said. My post primarily is in response to the truth, facts regarding the local officials and professionals i.e. volcanologist, having ample time to prepare per the comment in the video stating they had no time to prepare. Do not lecture me in regards to my post. Yes, I have been in such an event. And yes I left every time. Monetary or material "THINGS" are not worth losing a life over. And I really do not care what you think about my expressing this. Not everyone will share in your decision to stay and risk your life, your families lives for THINGS that can be replaced. This is simply my opinion as a person who has been in far more than one catastrophic state of emergency event. You may feel differently. That is fine. But do not take it out on others who clearly are worried, concerned for the people there, but are responding to the video itself being viewed, as well as tbe crises there. One tbing I have never done throughout the crises my family survived, because we left, is take it out on others. So check yourself please. Because youve jumped in me before in other posts, other videos. And quite frankly, Ive sent you phone numbers for help too, what.....some 7 days ago? Only to be verbally abused on posts. And that it wrong of Hawaiians to be ugly to those of us concerned and only trying to help. We hope you all survive this. We check repeatedly updates everyday, all day. We send our prayers and empathy. But my expressing my response to tbe video and crises there does not validate a free pass to abuse. My spouse was the Director over Emergency Preparedness and specialized as a Medical Doctor with 3 subspecialties, as well as a scientist, a chemist, a biologist for 31 long years. And worked 49 years total in the field. This is how and why I knew who to contact to get a few there help. I have no ill intentions. Yet you attacked me the other day on another post, and at least 4 times now. And it ends here. Best wishes.

      I mostly agree, but i will say this. Not everything can be rebuilt. Imagine living in puna. YOu are 60 years old. And have been doing permaculture for the past 30 years. Your garden is a 30 year old permaforest garden. You cant just rebuild that in a few years. 30 years of permaculture really changes the soil and makes it much more fertile. You cant buy that. You have to build it up over ANOTHER 30 year period. If your 60, that means that you will be 90 before you can fully restore what you dedicated most of your life too, especially if you had to work most of your life to get the money to get the resources you need to start doing something like that. For people that are in that situation i can completely understand especially because they will probably never get to live to see it rebuilt. Having your life's work destroyed in a day knowing you wont be able to rebuild it, is probably to some people, Just as bad as death. I personally don't think there is anything wrong for people to feel that way. You just gotta accept that some people would rather go with their life's work, than live to remember they cant ever get it back.

    I'm curious if anyone knows how this is cleaned up? Like can the lava rock be easily broken up with a backhoe and cleared off the road? I mean I know the roads are destroyed anyway and will have to be rebuilt due to the cracking, but do they clear the lava or just go over it? I assume it's not like soil that can just be graded away.

    As the earth is rotating you will notice that this will peak like now then subside then you'll see a larger uptick. The reason they can't really fully predict what's happening is because the answer isint in the ground it's in fact out in space.. there's something causing a gravitational pull on the planet from a certain direction...what is magma??.. so as the earth is rotating it is passing thru a stronger area of magnetic pull every rotation as to pull magma out of the earth. Which is also y as it passes thru this pull every rotation more liquid will come up becuz the previous pulls have made way for it and also pulled more towards the earth's surface. The real question is what is causing the pull and can this also upset Yellowstone if the same phenomenon happened along its Co ordinary during rotation?. Thanks cya earthlings 👾🐍

    How many peeps commenting here are actually hawaiian? It’s interesting how quickly religion and politics is brought into topic, concerning but interesting. I just came here to see the amazing sight that is the power of kilauea, as it may never happen again like this in our lifetime. Sorry to the locals displaced but hey you can always rebuild, you cannot respawn, unless maybe you’re some of the religious fenatics in the comments

      JB, I have made comments to your previous post and you are right. I was born Honolulu 1944, I am not native Hawaiian, but my mother was and instilled in me love for the beauty of Hawaii that is now gone. I grew up on the black sand beaches of Hilo, I have been back a few times, but nothing is left of what I knew to be Hawaii.
