- In Czech, dům (house) is a masculine noun, auto (car) is a neuter noun, while holka (girl) is feminine. How, what, where & most importantly WHY? In this lesson we will learn how to identify the gender of Czech nouns. What are the rules by which you can figure this out as well as some exceptions. In the majority of cases, you can guess the gender just by looking at the noun's ending (because sometimes, you will need to memorize the gender of some words by heart). These are the rules:
-> When the word ends in a Consonant, it is:
77% masculine (77% of the words that ends with consonant are masculine)
- obchod
- dům
- čaj
- student
20% feminine
Often soft consonants: ž, š, č, ř, ď, ť, ň + c, j (you need to memorize these words, because not always words that ends with soft consonants are feminine, they can be simpy masculine, for example the word čaj is maculine):
- tramvaj
- kancelař
With the ending -ost (always feminine):
- radost
- zopovědnost
3% neuter
Ending -um (always neuter):
- centrum (downtown)
- muzeum
-> When the word ends in -A:
92% feminine
- Praha
- voda
- kavárna
7% masculine (Usually surnames and professions, and some random words that you need to memorize)
- Bedřich Smetana (surname)
- turista
- kolega (male colleague)
1% neuter (words coming from other languages)
- téma (theme, topic)
-> When the word ends in -O:
99% neuter
- kino
- město
- pivo
-> When the word ends in -E/Ě:
89% feminine
Endings -e/-ě (almost all are femine):
- restaurace
- fráze
- informace
- unie
- televize
Endings -ice, -yně, -ie:
- silnice
- kolegyně
- galerie
- demokracie
- Francie
8% neuter
Endings -e/-ě (some can be neuter, these ones you have to memorize by heart):
- moře
- kuře
- dítě
Ending -iště (always, it will be neuter):
- parkoviště
- letiště
3% masculine (surname, profession)
- Kubice (surname)
- Průvodce (male tourist guide)
-> When the word ends in -I/-Í:
99% neuter
Ending -i/í:
- nádraží
- náměstí
- taxi
1% masculine/feminine (person)
- recepční (male receptionist)
- recepční (female receptionist)
