I am so confused about setting this up. Most of these beginner-friendly videos. The instructions are way too fast. And a lot of you guys skip or don't show everything. When you went to the Anbernic site (which I did to download the files) nothing happened. In the video you quickly copy and paste something into Google, then went into Google Drive, and then you're in Office Editing. I am so confused. 😶 In another setup video, another guy did the same. They talked about a file reader, and quickly mentioned what they were doing, but didn't show it. Or they quickly mentioned something "that is easy" (as in a couple clicks). But in reality. The person has to download 3 different things and go to 3 different sites. While having to take 10 more additional steps. This is my first retro device. This is super confusing because I am not tech-savvy. So, this is a tough start. And videos I am finding are leaving me with more questions. I kind of see why people just take it out of the package and just play or just stick to the companies' devices. 😓
You gotta have some damn common sense, it’s all on the website, you don’t need your hand held for every little thing dude, they have tabs that literally lead you to where you’re looking.
What an awesome "FAQ" video that condenses about a weeks worth of research/videos/Reddit & Discord convos down to basically a 10 minute video. When my buddies get their devices I'm definitely pointing them in this direction.
You've explained really nicely. More importantly, I appreciate your patience. You've slowly shown everything on screen for viewers. Love and blessings to you from India.
I like how you addressed the question of where to find ROMS. I understand why you can't just link to ROM files and why you have to dance around the subject. It's been about 10 years since I DL ROM files, and things were very different back then. I used MAME and I would have to DL the ROMS off janky angelfire type sites filled with spyware, bogus links and fake files. I just started getting into handheld consoles and I was wondering what the situation with ROMS is like now. My question isn't, what is the exact website I can DL the ROMS, but more of how are ROMS being distributed these days, and what the protocols are for obtaining ROMS. I'm glad that you explained how they are distributed and what resources to us for finding them.
This is pretty much why I went for the rg35xx. You really can just jump into playing right from the box. And I dont mind the default OS either, because I have no frame of reference as it’s my first emulator lol. I’ve yet to have any issues saving or games running properly with the card it came with pre loaded. There’s plenty of time for it ti fail but it seems fine.
It might be a personal problem, but I do not have any MARIO games preloaded???? Seems pretty weird cuz it’s MARIO?! (Again might be a personal problem.
So if I get a 32g. I just need to move things over? I won't have to do anything with a partition or whatever? Is it only the rom SD card I need to stress over? I don't have a laptop or computer.
Super helpful. this really does solve the problem you set out at the beginning - helping someone new and bamboozled by all of this, to understand what's necessary! Thank you :-)
Thanks go i found this video. I got my hands on RG353VS some days ago, but there were no memory cards in any card slop as it has 2 card slots. Its my first Anbernic device and unluckily i didnt know that this device won't turn on without system memory card. I thought maybe its out of charging but i won't charge, no LED light or OSD on inserting charging cable. The next day i downloaded and flashed default OS onto a memorycard but there is another nightmare waiting for me. I am not able to insert memory card. I used sim ejection tool to push memory card deep inside but it won't click. Now it thought may be someone pull the cards forcefully which leads to damaging the memorycard slot. I am still not able to fix it.
Awesome! I just have two questions, how to map the front loader to the side function key on the RG505, and how to get Sega CD roms to work? The Sega CD Roms comes in cue and bin format and it doesn’t seem to work with any Sega CD bios loaded.
Hey, so I don't have the 505 unfortunately, but might be able to help with your second question. What emulator, or if retroarch, what core are you trying to use for Sega cd?
Thank you ! this happen to me after bought my rg35xx i get busy and leave my handheld on my drawer for few months then the time i want to use again the sd card not working already 😢😢😢
Hey, great video, i recently got the rg353v dual os and the Roms came in a brand less sd, but the os Linux came in a kioxia sad card. I haven’t had any problems yet. I’ll come back to this video if i do have any.
most people that will watch this video are new to emulators, then giving them advice to flash their sd cards and manually do these things will be super overwhelming to them, if you are new, just use your stock sd cards try to play them and enjoy them, then if you got curious then experiment a bit( putting your own roms), then if you are familliar enough, then you can do what this guy is telling you.
Flashing an SD card is extremely easy. The problem is the experience out of the box is awful for these devices - you can definitely use the SD that comes with it (which will die, and then you'll complain about the device) or use the ROMS that come with it (which won't save, and then we get daily reddit posts about it). Or you can put the hour in when you get the device to properly set it up with a single UA-cam video for that device and never have to worry about it again. The people who stick with stock SD cards and stock ROMs never come back for more thanks to their experiences.

I think I enjoy tinkering with the device and customizing it as much as actually playing the games. I spent a couple days learning how to flash a PS3 with CFW so I can run disc images off a external HD, played a couple games and never used it again. I was wondering if you had any personal recommendations for upgrading the OS on a Powkiddy x55. I have a new Samsung 16GB card I want to use as the new system card. Out of the box the X55 is running JELOS from sept 2023 and I was going flash it with the newest version but it seems like you have a good understanding of what OS is best. Is there something other than the stock JELOS os I should look into? Anyway, I find your videos extremely helpful and very well presented so I am subscribing to your channel. Keep up the good work and I look forward to watching more.
Hey thanks! I'm not a big fan of JELOS, but they are the only good option available for the X55. I would flash the newest version onto an SD card, then run their OTA updater to make sure you're all up to date, but definitely move away from stock JELOS that it came with.

If I simply install the AnbernicOS on a good sd card and put roms on a good second sd card am I good to go or do i find and Download bios files like if i use custom software
Asking as vaguely as I can…😅 In Linux devices, bios is downloaded as a “pack” from certain “archive”, unzipped and the contents of this unzipped “system” folder are put into “bios” folder on the properly prepared TF2/game microSD? And then let’s say I legally own WarioLand4 and would like to also play it on my 353PS. How do I go about it when ArkOS is already installed and TF2 card is ready and the b*os is in the bi*s folder?
Yeah basically. Just put bios files in the bios folder, not subfolders. So directory will be BIOS folder, and inside, all of the bins etc. This one is in the ArkOS wiki, but you can just put the Warioland4 rom in the gba folder. The BIOS for GBA isn't a requirement, but optional, if you want that nostalgia starting intro.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Yeah, today I went through installing ArkOS and that was quite easy. Basically both cards should be ready if I copied the bios files correctly. But I'll leave the roms stuff for tomorrow. RGC says it's the scariest stuff😅
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Basically I downloaded the “bios retroarch pack” and it unzipped as “system” that contains many and various file types, some of them also zipped, which confused me. But eventually I opened this “system” and did ctrl c+v on all those files and copied them to “bios” on my 256GB TF2 “game” card. That’s what I saw RGC do in his video with his personal bios collection.
Not familiar with that pack, but the steps sound correct! Might need to unzip some, but PSX and PS2 are the only real consoles that require a bios to run.
Very useful video being new to emulation. I bought an R36S to start cause cheap to see if its something I would stick with and actually use. Learned more about this entire scene and did tons of research. Settled on buying a 405M as my new main device and hand off my R36S to kid. Fantastically made video that makes it all easy to take in a nutshell. Is there any specifics to loading the ROMS up as zip files? Would make more sense to save space but I've never really messed with "zipping" games for emulation.
I think you have to unzip the files for most console emulators, if I remember correctly the NeoGeo is an exception. However, I'm sure if you just wanted to store some and weren't actually using them (maybe you're back ups?) You could zip them until you needed to extract.
i bought RG35XX PLUS!! and im happy! i bought 2 MICRO SD card as well one for games and other one for CFW but for now ill play stock OS , so do I have to install the stock OS on my new sd card? I'm very new on this please anyone can tell me thanks !
I just brought a RG353VS do i have to buy a ROMS and BIOS sd card for any manufacturer? I downloaded a arcade game from roms what I need and transfer to my RG353VS I opened a game for what it transfer it it goes back to the game selection
hello thank you for the video. If i set up the stuff with my sd cards like youve shown in the video, i should have a problem taking the sd cards out and putting it in a new device? Tanks
Hi. I don’t know if yourself or anyone can help. I have the RG405V with Gamma OS install. All was well until I clicked something and now on the settings screen my screen rotates 90, this also happens when I play all games which did not happen before. Strangely enough the PSP works fine due to your guides. At least that emulator still works, thanks. In the Rotation settings. I have tried switching it on and off and restarting the RG each time. When it’s on I have it set to 0 degrees. No matter what I do I am stuck with the System settings and all games other than PSP at a 90 degree angles which obviously makes all the games unplayable? Anyone or yourself got any tips? Thanks
Have had mine for two months and no sign of that. Like most issues on devices, it's a rare occurrence that people think is more widespread than it is. Love the device.
@Joey's Retro Handhelds yeah it's a great device. Favorite by far. Was gutted when happened when all the Paid Influences banged on about "Premium" Going to Glue Later
So i ordered the Anbernic RG40XX H, do you know if there is a max size micro sd card i can add to it? I mainly play gbc and ps1 / ps2 games but all are welcome
im mostly confused about file types like i found roms but they have like cdi files, bin files, cue files, and gdi files idk if they would work or not and how or where i would begin to find what file they need to be or how to change them this is mostly a problem with dreamcast but its happened with other games like ps1, snes and gba (also this is a side thing is their specfic types of roms desgined for a certian handheld or do all roms work with anything like im getting a rg35xx plus so would i need specific roms for it or jsut any rom that i can find)
So whatever custom OS you pick, it will already have the emulators with it? And also a BIG THANK YOU on the bios help! I was starting to panic i made a mistake ordering a retro handheld lol
Why doesn't pokemon save 😢 my retro handheld is coming in the mail tomorrow, think I'm just gonna use it until the micro SD card that comes with it until it fries. I'm only getting it for pokemon, persona, & final fantasy. & If it breaks hopefully it'll be a cool display peice. 😅
I want a device like this but everything I see, I'm gonna need a desktop computer. I'm on my smart phone. I can't do all this website stuff. Only on my s22+
Seriously regretting buying one of these i wanted to have fun with old games not a second job listening to 1000 youtubers all having conflicting opinions about fractional improvements from doing X or Y
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds haha! I just want to play silly old games :D
I purchased the rg35xx 2 days ago and I’m reading about people having issues with their sd cards, some say their device don’t turn on or that they play with it on the first day and all sudden it doesn’t work. Do i just buy a better sd card ? Do I have to transfer the data that’s on the rg35xx on to the new sd card ? If so how can I do that ? Edit: I watched halfway and kinda understand it, hope I can do it on my laptop
What would happen if I used the stock memory card, lodes some games, then everything corrupts? Can I buy new memory cards and download the OS and roms? Or would the corrupt memory cards damage my console?
Just lose all your saves and however many hours as well as settings etc if it's a Linux handheld. It doesn't damage the console no, just replace the sd card with an OS and roms.
I just capped off my first experience setting up a handheld. I just wanna be that guy that tells the truth and not sugarcoat things, by saying it was not an entirely easy or stress-free experience. It was speed bump after speed bump, and this may be my own incompetence, but took me way more than an hour of setup guides to figure everything out. A lot of these videos are months old, and due to licensing and legalities some of the files/programs aren't available in the same capacity or at all. Take Aether PS2 emulator for example. Its no longer AetherSX2, its now NetherSX2, which is just Aether with a patch. But due to licensing issues you can't find the most recent version prebuilt in a APK, you have to build it yourself. Thats not a hard task, but my PC wouldnt run the command correctly, so i had to run it through a patching app on my phone, which also wasnt hard, but this was all just time consuming. 🤣 Anyway, I'm mostly on the other end of it, but be warned Noobs with little to no experience in this realm. This isn't completely a no brainer task as some may suggest.
I remember when I got my powkiddy v90. I had to checkout the sd card that came with it. It was terrible Mario and Luigi would crash after 30 minutes into the game 😂😂😂😂
Disagree completely with throw away the sd card. First thing you should do is add any bios/rom files to your hard drive/computer so you don’t have to hunt for them later.
Have you tested the YUZU for android on it yet? I'm trying to figure out what better GPU to install to boost performance as of now it is showing me an error message and not opening any games. #RG405M
No, two different things. The included Rom files, so Pokemon as an example, have a lot of issues, so you'll need to source your own Roms. The microSD card they come with is also low quality and bad, so it needs replacing with a branded one, like SanDisk, Samsung etc.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds i have rg35xx-h and i bought it with both sd cards (which is a mistake what most people said) and it has games in both cards but im not also sure if 128 would be enough since i dont have experience about these consoles and 128 sounds low but i also want to trust to the internet. I also couldnt find any OS for RG35XX-H (Most of them are in Beta or something like that so im realy confused and overwhelmed)
128GB is more than enough for a curated ROM list for what the RG35XX-H can actually play, so no issues there. However, if you prefer to have every game from every system available to you, then it won't be and you'll want a 256GB or above. Personally, I use 128GB's for devices like the RG35XX-H, but my games list is curated. RG35XX-H is one of the systems, on stock OS, that can play games off both SD cards. As for OS, it sounds like you're new, so I would stick to using stock for a while to get the hang of things before changing to any new OS. The OS options available for that model right now are all still developing and you'd be updating each week.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds thank you so much! I'll stick to the stock OS like you said and ill update my sd cards. Currently im only planing to play just pokemon games until i do a research about what can i play and what should i try.
Do I always have to "fat32" a new SD card?
Best practice, but if using Windows the standard OS tools are limited to 32GB. Anything larger and you’ll need to use NFTS file system
Somehow the stock os is friendlier than garlicos to me.
Maybe i will try minUI later.
MinUI looks very easy to use!
Mine comes with 2 sd cards already inside the device. I have the rgb20s
Yep! One OS, one ROMS.
I still can't get retroarch to load my roms on my rg405m. Please help any suggestions
i bought RG35XX PLUS!! and im happy! i bought 2 MICRO SD card as well one for games and other one for CFW
but for now ill play stock OS , so do I have to install the stock OS on my new sd card? I'm very new on this please anyone can tell me
thanks !
Are you saying not to use the ROMs thay came with the stock sd card?
Meaning download completely now ones?
I just brought a RG353VS do i have to buy a ROMS and BIOS sd card for any manufacturer? I downloaded a arcade game from roms what I need and transfer to my RG353VS I opened a game for what it transfer it it goes back to the game selection
Hello, will these instructions be also applicable to the rg40xxv model?
I agree, Awesome Video bud.
Do you have link to flash Anbernic RG405V? couldn't find on the website
You can just factory reset.
How do you replace the operating sd card on the RG405M?
Can you do a video for the Retoid pocket flip. Please please please please.
Sorry my dude, not a device I bought or want. Have the metal 3+ coming though!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds no problem, I might return them anyway and get what your getting.
Can you make a video on the Anbernic win600? How and where to add games? Thanks
It's just Windows, games can be anywhere, just point the emulators to them.
hello thank you for the video. If i set up the stuff with my sd cards like youve shown in the video, i should have a problem taking the sd cards out and putting it in a new device? Tanks
Unfortunately not, every device is different with different firmware and setup.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds ok thank you. Not even when i transfer it from a powkiddy rgb 20s to a powkiddy rgb 10 max 3?
Thank you for the video. Is it fine if I use sdxc memory card? Thanks!
I would love to get a link for the screwdriver to remove the battery for the rg35xx. Everything is setup just want to purchase a screwdriver set
I have the ifixit essentials toolkit, and that worked for me. You need a H1.5.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds lifesaver! Thanks. Ordering it today
How do I correct minor light bleed
Hey awesome video thank you
Can I use a MacBook to load the sd card ?
mine came with a partitioned drive
thank you. will this work for mac?
Thanks
The Screen falls out on the Rg405m. Get the Glue Ready.
What if u don't have access to a pc to download your hardware
Then buy an Android handheld that you can download games using the browser.
So i ordered the Anbernic RG40XX H, do you know if there is a max size micro sd card i can add to it?
I mainly play gbc and ps1 / ps2 games but all are welcome
im mostly confused about file types like i found roms but they have like cdi files, bin files, cue files, and gdi files idk if they would work or not and how or where i would begin to find what file they need to be or how to change them
this is mostly a problem with dreamcast but its happened with other games like ps1, snes and gba
(also this is a side thing is their specfic types of roms desgined for a certian handheld or do all roms work with anything like im getting a rg35xx plus so would i need specific roms for it or jsut any rom that i can find)
Omgggggggg thank you so much . Is it okay to copy all the games from the sd card it came with to a new one?
You can, but a lot of the roms have a ton of issues, so you're better off replacing them.
Your Pokemon doesn't save because you're using the stock roms :)
Can someone let me know if a 256GB Micro SD card will work ok for a Miyoo Mini Plus please?
Yep.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thank you very much for the quick reply! :)
They didnt give me an sd card with the games on it what should i do?
You never want those anyway. Load your own roms. ua-cam.com/video/cdxS6N0N6Oo/v-deo.html
Great video, can you do a setup guide for Anbernic 353V? Please! Thank you!❤
Hey! If it's the Linux side, my video on the RG353PS setup guide would work.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds oh ok, thank you!
I want a device like this but everything I see, I'm gonna need a desktop computer. I'm on my smart phone. I can't do all this website stuff. Only on my s22+
Then stick to Android devices, none of them require a PC. Retroids, AYN Odin 2 etc.
Seriously regretting buying one of these i wanted to have fun with old games not a second job listening to 1000 youtubers all having conflicting opinions about fractional improvements from doing X or Y
Sorry for trying to help you make an informed decision.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds haha! Its all insane as a new user- i bought an sf2000 put the latest firmware on it and have played it for a couple of months no problem and its been brilliant, i bought an anbernic a month ago and still havent been able to play it as it turns out i need an sd card.. no another one.. no that sd card reader crashes when i flash it so i need another.. oh are you using this firmware? you fool! I just want to play silly old games :D
What if you don’t got a pc ??
Likely want to stick to Android only devices then.
Why don't companies sell what they offered
I purchased the rg35xx 2 days ago and I’m reading about people having issues with their sd cards, some say their device don’t turn on or that they play with it on the first day and all sudden it doesn’t work. Do i just buy a better sd card ? Do I have to transfer the data that’s on the rg35xx on to the new sd card ? If so how can I do that ?
Edit: I watched halfway and kinda understand it, hope I can do it on my laptop
What happened?
If you fixed it... details, maybe link or links you used please.
Hallo Can I use a 512GB memory card? I have 405m
Yep!
Kodak sd cards are legit too
Is 2x 128GB cards okay?
I will be honest, I am struggling so hard trying get the software going. Can I pay someone to do this for meeeeee 😭
Is kingstone good?
Kingston is a great brand, always a good choice
Disregard last comment. Just found this video. You are a godsend to this old fart that wants to retro game🙏
I remember when I got my powkiddy v90. I had to checkout the sd card that came with it. It was terrible Mario and Luigi would crash after 30 minutes into the game 😂😂😂😂
great video
Disagree completely with throw away the sd card. First thing you should do is add any bios/rom files to your hard drive/computer so you don’t have to hunt for them later.
Have you tested the YUZU for android on it yet? I'm trying to figure out what better GPU to install to boost performance as of now it is showing me an error message and not opening any games. #RG405M
It won't work on Mali GPUs yet, so 405M is out.
Sooooooo Pokémon game will only save with sundisk products??
No, two different things. The included Rom files, so Pokemon as an example, have a lot of issues, so you'll need to source your own Roms. The microSD card they come with is also low quality and bad, so it needs replacing with a branded one, like SanDisk, Samsung etc.
I want to give you 10000 likes!
what if i use 2 128 gb sd cards and use one for ROMS and the other for both ROMS and operating system ? Would that be overkill ?
It would be, but also depending on the device and firmware, most don't have the ability for roms on both cards.
But i still dont know if i should i use my OS sd card for games if i run out of space ?
You can, it's no big deal, it won't mess anything up.
