Note: This guide is for the original RG35XX, not the Plus or H or 2024 edition. If you find yourself having any performance issues, try enabling Threaded Performance in RetroArch. In-game, menu key + X, B to back to Main Menu, Settings, Video, Threaded Video then B twice to Main Menu, Quick Menu, Overrides, Save Core Overrides. This is buggy - it may save for you, it may not, if you open another game and don't see it, there's another way to change this. On your operating system SD card (so slot 1 for those using two), go into the CFW folder, retroarch, .retroarch, config, go into the folder of the core you want, and then open the .cfg file with Notepad. Add a new line and type video_threaded = "true". Close and save, pop the SD card back into the device and Threaded Video should be enabled for that core. Do this for any core you're having performance issues with.
I've found that the Threaded Video option saves if you change it directly from RetroArch (No cores) at the right side of the main menu of GarlicOS. Make sure "save at quitting Retro-arch" is enable. In my case I figured that the overrides option was disabling Threaded Video giving me poor performance in PS1 games. I've only disable Threaded Video when playing some fast pace SNES games though HDMI out put as it may cause some latency and a bit of screen tearing because some of these emulators were designed to work on one core. The device, however, seems to be powerful enough to run SNES games on just one core, or at least the games I play.
I recently purchased the RG35XX - And while waiting for it to come in the post, I've been looking at GarlicOS setup videos - I must say this is hands down the best guide I have seen! Kudos to you!

I have been using mine for 2 days, I am very pleased with this equipment, I have 200 games on Playstation1 CORE, all of them that I checked run at full 60fps synchronization without frame drops (on the "balanced" CPU power management), it is great portable equipment for little money

You, Sir, are a Genius. I was finally able to set up a 2 SD system that works! I'd name my first son after you, but at 27 y/o, I don't think he'd go for it😅
The one SD card method is the best, just buy a microSD card for 9-11 dollars with a capacity of 128GB and have everything on one. For the test, I did this, and in the second free microSD port I added a Kingston 256GB Canvas Go Plus card, on which I placed 100 GB of music in MP3 format, of course the folders were sorted as they used to be on HDD drives. My rg35xx has a music player (modification), initially I had the idea to put my 200GB music library on the second card, but after a few hours of listening to music through the 3.5 jack, I decided that I would rather not use the device as an mp3 player, but it is possible. A 256GB card works as a second slot without any problems. In the first card slot I had a Patriot EP V30, 128GB. I'm shocked that this little wonder with such limited guts can handle such large volumes

I just got my purple RG last Friday abs have been tinkering with it all weekend. Some one made a theme and icon swapper that runs in GarlicOS, so you don’t have to take your sd card out to change either of those. Problem I’m having is getting the video folder to show in the UI. I cannot find anything that explains it, except in very vague blurbs. Driving me nuts. Finally got my ScummVM and Ports folders sorted so that they work, and now this. But man, it’s such a great little system now that I changed the OS. Thanks for the video. The skraper section was very helpful.
Also weak level of tech here😁 and good but not enough knowing of English language, so this guide didn't helped me at all. Sad but true. I have many issues with my sons device: Power on (must reset a few times before it starts), Blocade of the some of the games (and they have never deblocades) and other issues...

I did run into issues where MiniPartition Tool wouldn't let me Extend partition because it wanted me to pay for a full version, so just used EaseUS Partition instead. Other than that, smooth sailing! :) Hopefully Black Seraph works some more on GarlicOS but I have the feeling he's moved onto the newer releases from Anbernic :(
FULL VERSION PAYMENT FIX - Just tried reinstalling MiniPartition Wizard without selecting "free trial" during installation and just selected "free", it worked and didn't ask me to register and pay for the full version :)

Is it possible to also move the safe states for the Games from the original pre-installed OS of the RG35XX to GarlicOS? Will I have less lag while playing GB or GBC games with GarlicOS when compared to the pre-installed OS?
I finally have the courage to migrate to Garlic OS, since my stock firmware was not keeping the in-game saves for snes for some reason (this only happened in Snes) i hope this bring the whole package. I must say I love You!
Have you had any trouble with the preloaded ROMS since moving to Garlic OS? I was told the preloaded ones are kind of bad and I would need to build my own ROM library for the console but I feel less confident doing that
@@A2daM2daZ You gonna have to re-build your own Iibrary anyway because the data on the original sd card comes encryptted. Besides the sd card which comes within the system is really cheap.
@@A2daM2daZ My best hint is to install Garlic on a new card. Use the 2 cards setup. One for the system and others for games only. You can add games and systems as You wish. You don't need to start your library from scratch. Search for down Ioads on discussion threads. Good luck!
every anbernic device I've ordered from anbernic themselves AND from random aliexpress sellers, have had kioxia micro sd cards. they have never failed on me in the past 2 years that I've been using them. imaging new OS updates or forks every other month. are 3rd party retailers swapping them with shittier cards?

Whenever I launch skraper, it restarts the config process. I launched it after it took two hours to load resources, went to go use it an hour later and it had to redownload all of the resources again, and again every time after that. Is there something I'm missing with this program? It doesn't seem to be working.

hey so I downloaded and extracted all the art and roms from Tiny BSG... just wondering how to put them into the roms folder properly? the instructions say to put all of the extracted files into a single directory, but I am confused by what that means ._.
My formated card looks just like yours with the files all in the same places and i belive i did all the steps correctly but when i put my card into my system it wont turn on. Hey Joey, Im trying to figure out the how to load the bios. Im not sure of the file you told us to download. I followed the steps but am onto the second 128 sd card and am lost of where the bios are. Can you help or explain? Thanks!
What if you change the letter of FAT32 to E for example when it was "none".... and it doesn't come up in file explorer. All it has is my local disc C and usb drive D and those don't have the bios, roms, CFW folders...
I followed every step but the system will not power on with the new GarlicOS sd card. It will turn on with the old junk sd card it came with, but not the new one with everything installed on it. No clue what do now.

thanks for the vid. Is there a way to autosave the state with a thumbnail but leaving the "load automatically" option off? Because no way this option is being saved at all in my configuration. What can I do to save it? Because i think the OS is very cool, the only thing I do not like is the automatic load state when i turn on the console and when i load a content.
Box Art: I'm using Scraper and I follow all steps. I aim to my sd card folders with Roms, But on the proccess always get "Zero Roms Found - Nothing to scrap" What am I missing?

(And for kinda obvious reason nobody talks about that on any tutorial) Simply, the reason was I was using Windows 7 (old schooler here lol) >< Skraper (and most handhelds installations) for some reason are only compatible with Windows 10. What if you want to or need to get the original Ambernic OS back? Is there a way to flash that back and download it from somewhere? Right now, the RG35XX I bought used came with GarlicOS and the default Ambernic one and I can switch between the two, but the previous owner just installed GarlicOS alongside the Ambernic one on the default "48" SD card so you can imagine how that goes, ever so often things corrupt so I have to eject the OS Card, wait for a few seconds, put it back in and hit reset if I want the damn thing to power on. This happens often when I'm in GarlicOS of course. I got me a new quality SD card now and will install GarlicOS on it as per your instructions, having hacked my Vita, set up all kinds of stuff on the Steam Deck and hacked my mini consoles and what not this is simple enough, but I'm just not clear on what happens to the original OS and if worse comes to worse how do you get back to it if the original OS MicroSD Card is corrupted?

The Anbernic RG35XX direct from them is saying it comes with Garlic OS already. What do I do in that case?
SD card is likely still low quality, so you'd want to still follow the guide.

Hey, just follow the steps on the Tiny Best Set page. You'll have a roms folder, systems inside, img folder inside that.

Hey Joey, Im trying to figure out the how to load the bios. Im not sure of the file you told us to download. I followed the steps but am onto the second 128 sd card and am lost of where the bios are. Can you help or explain? Thanks!

What if you change the letter of FAT32 to E for example when it was "none".... and it doesn't come up in file explorer. All it has is my local disc C and usb drive D and those don't have the bios, roms, CFW folders...

Any idea of what to do if rom freezes? If i go to the menu then back to the game, it just takes me back to the frozen rom

I followed every step but the system will not power on with the new GarlicOS sd card. It will turn on with the old junk sd card it came with, but not the new one with everything installed on it. No clue what do now.
Might have missed a step, are you sure you don't have an RG35XX Plus? This guide is for the regular RG35XX.

Thanks for this awesome video. I followed these steps and it worked like a charm. I was wondering though, is it common to press menu button several times to exit a game or is there another way to close a game with a single button ?
Should just be a single button usually, sometimes I have to press it twice quickly in succession.
Great explanation ! But when i do scraping foe like PS games, i get a lot of "Http request failed with status code 502". Scraping time showed more then a day to finish.

Hi, thank you so much for the video! When you have to update garlic, if I use 2 sd (one for garlic and one for roms and bios), the misc folder to be replaced in which sd do I find it? Can I find it on SD 1 or SD 2?
Followed this video to the T and for some reason the RG35XX Plus won't appear to turn on with the Garlic TF card in it. At a loss would appreciate some help!

thanks for the vid. Is there a way to autosave the state with a thumbnail but leaving the "load automatically" option off? Because no way this option is being saved at all in my configuration. What can I do to save it? Because i think the OS is very cool, the only thing I do not like is the automatic load state when i turn on the console and when i load a content.
Box Art: I'm using Scraper and I follow all steps. I aim to my sd card folders with Roms, But on the proccess always get "Zero Roms Found - Nothing to scrap" What am I missing?

(And for kinda obvious reason nobody talks about that on any tutorial) Simply, the reason was I was using Windows 7 (old schooler here lol) >< Skraper (and most handhelds installations) for some reason are only compatible with Windows 10. What if you want to or need to get the original Ambernic OS back?
Is there a way to flash that back and download it from somewhere?
Right now, the RG35XX I bought used came with GarlicOS and the default Ambernic one and I can switch between the two, but the previous owner just installed GarlicOS alongside the Ambernic one on the default "48" SD card so you can imagine how that goes, ever so often things corrupt so I have to eject the OS Card, wait for a few seconds, put it back in and hit reset if I want the damn thing to power on. This happens often when I'm in GarlicOS of course.
I got me a new quality SD card now and will install GarlicOS on it as per your instructions, having hacked my Vita, set up all kinds of stuff on the Steam Deck and hacked my mini consoles and what not this is simple enough, but I'm just not clear on what happens to the original OS and if worse comes to worse how do you get back to it if the original OS MicroSD Card is corrupted?
Hey, yep you can grab the original off Anbernic's website, there's a firmware section.
great video, except im incredibly confused during the 2nd SD card portion of the video. You say to not forget to assign a letter but then you label it, "ROMS!" lol wtheck! am I supposed to label it a letter or ROMS???? I'm so confused!! I'm just going to copy what you did and label it roms. hopefully all goes well
Do you need to do the box art section to run garlic os? I followed all the steps up to box art and the device won’t power on when the OS SD card is in the device?
No, but this guide is for the original 35XX, not the Plus or 2024 model if you're using those.
