Extensive Misfire Troubleshooting with a Chevy Express Van. Big headaches and hidden issues!

  • If you haven't noticed yet, it's not all classic cars and racecars around here at Lucore Automotive the vast majority of our business is fixing cars trucks and vans for the normal person. Daily drivers and road trip vehicles. Well this 1996 Chevy Express 1500 came to us for some drivability concerns and an obvious misfire, little did we know just what was in store for us!
Often times the vehicles that come to us have been in and out of other shops before and often times had repairs done... or at least parts replaced. That was the case with this van as you'll quickly see it's been somewhere before us a variety of "repairs" performed. That's where we step in to hunt down the cause, or causes, and get our new customer taken care of. Fortunately as you'll see by the end of the video the issues are resolved and we can add this one to our Win column.
Repairs and troubleshooting like this are exhausting, not necessarily physically exhausting as we certainly do more intensive work, but more mentally taxing. Trying to determine what the actual issue is, back track through what could be causing said issue, while also trying to keep in mind what repairs have or may have been done that could ALSO cause issues. Sometimes a big portion of what we do, is fixing a repair (or repairs) other people have done in the past, in order to get something working properly.
This one isn't a flashy fun one but it's a good one, showing just some of the experiences we have behind the garage doors. Hopefully you all enjoy it and maybe even learn a thing or two!
Lucore Automotive is a small independent American small business located just outside Columbus Ohio. While we are a full service shop that maintains and repairs countless daily drivers we are also well known for our work on classics, race cars, and collector cars.
We would like to thank all of our friends, fans, follower, supporters, subscribers, and most importantly customers for being here with us! Without the wonderful people who let us work on their toys, and help their dreams come true we wouldn't be in business.

THIS is the difference in taking your vehicle to an EXPERT TECH, vs. taking it to someone who merely, "works on cars." Anyone can have a tool box filled with expensive tools. Those tools are useless in the hands of a sub-par technician.

Being an Instrument/Electrical Journeyman. I could write a book on situations you would not believe. Folks have no understanding of what you automotive tech's go through troubleshooting. I do. Great job using the process of elimination to make needed repaires. Experience is essential as sometimes intermittent problems can lead to loss of sanity. In my case a loose connection can cause process shutdowns & hundreds of connections to go through even skinned wires in conduit. Great job! Thanks for
    sharing. Be safe.

Awesome job with the diagnosis and process of elimination to find the problem. You got very good mechanical skills and the business I'm sure benefits from it greatly. A shop is only profitable if has good technicians and good shop tools and equipment. Really like the new blast cabinet. Electrical gremlins can be time consuming and challenging but rewarding when you find them and properly correct them. I was a technician for many years. We have the same work ethics and skills. I also ran a couple shops at the end of my career that were very profitable. I retired early due to health reason. I miss it. Still work on my own cars at home. Keep up the videos.

-An Injector drop would have shown both injectors not contributing.

I replaced all spark plugs and wires as well as distributor cap with an ACDelco but didn’t replace the rotor due to limited parts availability. The materials do vary as per their spec, one must confirm the material is compatible with the application. For instance, neoprene is the inner seal elastomer in the case of gasoline and the outer is usually nylon in most applications. Spring opening pressures and suggested application are listed in their specification chart. Nickel plating, etc.

I'm considering selling my Silverado to buy an Express van. It looks much more difficult to work on, but is it really THAT bad from a mechanic's perspective? Is it a nightmare or just a PITA? Thanks!

Water in the gas !!!! Duh.that will cause the p0300 code. P0300 code only means the engine is misfiring.
Try putting 2 bottles of HEET and a bottle of Seafoam into a fresh tank of good gas.. Run through that tank and do it again.
Water in a bad tank of gas caused me grief making the engine misfire. "P0300"
Which set of my Stabilitrac /Traction control to go into shutdown and throw an error code. Worse was the code caused my transmission shift points to go haywire.
Everyone had crazy fixes suggested. Chasing the rabbit down the hole.
It all boiled down to IDIOTIC chevy ECM programming.
I Cleared the contaminated fuel. AND MAGIC...ALL CODES CLEARED.
No parts needed , just feul dryer and Seafoam.
