Life of a Woodsman - Camp Setup

  • To begin this long-term wilderness living trip I get my camp established by setting up the canvas tent. I have chosen a large open area for my camp. This gives me plenty of room to set up the tent and it keeps me away from any tall trees that could be a potential hazard. The tent setup is very easy despite making all the stakes and poles from surrounding materials. Inside the tent it is very large and offers plenty of room for a comfortable living experience.
    About the tent:
    The tent is a 5 meter canvas bell tent. I bought this tent with my own money after doing my own research to decide what style of tent I wanted. Prior to this trip I had used the tent only a handful of times and never with the wood stove. I bought this specific brand of tent (Danchel Outdoor) simply because the product had a good reputation from other buyers and at the time of purchase it was on sale so I was able to get a good deal. Later on in the series I will share more of my opinions on this tent.
    Thank you to everyone who watches! God bless.

    That's an apartment! Love the scenery, got to spend a couple weeks in the bush in Northern Alberta when I was a kid. While I love life in BC, Alberta can be just as scenic

    Great looking tent. Something that size was a pretty good investment as well but a good solid canvas tent will last you a long time. Let the adventure begin!

    I know others make videos. But I was wondering if you’d make a video of how you sharpen your knives and hatchet. They always seem very sharp. If not being to nosey, what caliber rifle, handgun do you carry for harvesting food and for self protection from 2 & 4 legged predators. Thank you sir for the videos and keep ‘em coming ! GOD bless ! 🙏💕

    Good to see you back out and reunited with your beard! 😁👍 Regarding ground stakes, I go one step further down the laz....um.....easy scale and split each one into 2. An added bonus is if you drive them in the ground with the flat side towards your tent, it holds better than a round stake. Particularly in soft ground. That, and you only need 1/2 the nice straight lengths of branches for the same number of pegs, which can be an advantage if that sort of growth is scarce where you are, or you are against a daylight or weather issue where time saved from searching for materials may be a consideration. Thanks for having us along!🇨🇦👍

      Good tip, thanks!! This tent needs 28 stakes to get set up correctly so splitting the stakes would've sped things up. Thanks for watching. Happy trails!

    God bless you too! Looks like a wonderful beginning. Will the grass catch fire around the metal stove? What is the material surrounding the vent pipe as it exits the tent space? This bell tent is reminiscent of the Mongolian Yurt. I've watched numerous videos of Mongols in their migration and living habits, all involving the Yurt. The Yurt is extremely efficient, and semi permanent allowing these nomads to "follow the herds" as they move from pasture to pasture. Your tent makes a really cool space and I love the entry, allowing headroom to access the space.

    • @KuskBushcraft
      @KuskBushcraft  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching! I had no issues with the grass inside the tent. I did clear the ground where the stove was placed. The stove jack is a silicone fiberglass material that is very heat resistant. The wood stove inside the tent worked excellent and I experienced no issues relating to fire hazards. Happy trails!

    Thanks for posting this! I'm looking at a similar tent and would also be using it without the floor for winter hot tenting. The one concern I have is that it doesn't look like you can secure the base of the door without the floor to zip it to. Has that been an issue for you?

      @KuskBushcraft  6 місяців тому +1

      From where I parked my truck I was probably 5 or 6 km back into the bush. The gear was dropped off using a small atv. To carry all that gear in would have taken several trips on foot. Thanks for watching!

    Cool tent but, being in Western Montana I could never bring myself to stake it up out in the middle of a meadow like that, way too much of an attention getter. All sorts of (unwelcome in camp) critters would see that from way off and come to see what's going on.

    So I've been thinking about doing a little camping 🏕, not as far out as you but still hitting the woods a little. Two things are making me nervous mosquitoes, and bears..im in mass so I got black bears. And the big thing mosquitoes..triple E was detected right at the camp grounds I was considering..do you ever get nervous?

    • @KuskBushcraft
      @KuskBushcraft  6 місяців тому

      Black bears and mosquitoes are very prominent in my area as well. It's perfectly normal to be nervous. I would recommend taking a few bear safety courses and studying up on bear behaviour. I typically carry bear spray or a rifle (or both) as a last ditch method to protect myself should I ever encounter any dangerous wildlife. I've never had any issues with wildlife in the past but I camp in areas that have little to no positive human interaction with wildlife. If you are planning on camping in or around parks or areas that have a lot of tourism then the wildlife may be less afraid of humans. Camping in groups of 3 or more people is a good place to start.
      As for the mosquitoes in my area I've never heard of any cases of diseases being present. I wear insect repellant but usually still get bitten quite a bit. Frequent application of insect repellant is the best method I've found to minimize the biting.
      Hope this helps. Stay safe my friend and happy trails!

    Just an innocent question. Isn't all that dry grass in the tent a potential fire hazard 🤔

    • @pennsyltuckyreb9800
      @pennsyltuckyreb9800 6 місяців тому +2

      Everything is a potential fire hazard around a fire. 😉
      He dug out under and around the stove, that's good enough. There won't be anything spitting out all over the place because it's contained inside the stove.

    • @KuskBushcraft
      @KuskBushcraft  6 місяців тому +5

      The stove contains the fire nicely. The grass packs down from walking on it and creates a natural mat. I didn't have any issues with the grass catching fire. Thanks for watching!

    I've always heard that canvas tents aren't that good because they are heavy, expensive, and aren't usually waterproof.

    • @KuskBushcraft
      @KuskBushcraft  6 місяців тому

      They are certainly heavy and can be quite expensive. If the tent is made from a good quality canvas it should be able to hold up to a heavy rain. Typically new canvas tents need to go through a few wet and dry cycles to shrink the cotton fibers together which makes the tent far more waterproof. The tent shown in this video has been through a few heavy rains already and I've stayed perfectly dry inside.

    • @KuskBushcraft
      @KuskBushcraft  6 місяців тому

      I cleared the ground where the stove sat and didn't have any issues. It would probably be smart to put down some type of barrier between the stove and the ground (like a steel plate or a layer of bricks) but just clearing the ground worked fine for me. Thanks for watching!

  • @SWAMPHUNTER644
    @SWAMPHUNTER644 6 місяців тому

    I don]t mean to criticize but you should have set up your tent at home, cut your stovepipe hole with something other than a knife (your hole will leak), and do a trial burn with your stove to test for problems. You need to remove every bit of grass from inside your tent. One spark from your stove and your whole tent will go up in flames. That spot is not safe. You are not prepared to be out there alone.
