  • Part 5 of the log home building series. In this episode I return to my building site after a very wet summer. I begin chinking the log walls to create a weatherproof exterior that will allow me to stay warm and dry once I move in.
Be sure to subscribe for updates and future videos in this series.
    Thanks to everyone who watches!
    Frequently Asked Questions:
Why cut down all the trees to make the shelter when dead trees are laying down on the ground?
The trees I cut for the shelter were all DEAD STANDING. This means that the tree had died but was still standing. This happens when trees die of disease, insects, or when they are out-competed for nutrients and sunlight by surrounding trees. No trees were killed to make the structure. I selectively went through the forest and only harvested dead-standing trees for building. The reason for using dead-standing wood is because it is less prone to rot than trees laying on the forest floor.
    Where was this filmed?
    Alberta, Canada.
    What was the temperature?
Day temp : 15 degrees Celsius
    Night temp: 2 degrees Celsius
Are there dangerous animals in this area?
This area is home to many different animals, some of which are black bears, girzzly bears, wolves, and mountain lions.
I've never had any issues with wildlife. They tend to leave humans alone.
I do carry bear spray with me for protection.
What am I doing to weatherproof the log home?
In this episode I begin the chinking process using moss. Chinking is essentially filling the gaps in the walls. This won't create a weatherproof seal, but it does create a solid wall with no gaps that I can then apply a waterproof seal to.
    Gear used:
    Knife - Helle Sigmund
    Hatchet - Marbles 700DB
Bedroll - Two queen sized wool blankets.
    Backpack - Kelty Redwing 44
Tea Kettle - Woods brand. Unsure of model name.
Cook Set - Woods Nootka cook set.
Pants - Waxed cotton pants. Here's a link to the video showing how I made them: • Video
Camera - iPhone 6 mounted on a tripod. No fancy camera, lenses, or microphones. I only use the one phone to film and I move it around to get my different shots/angles.

Old wooden ships had oakum in the gaps.iE: tarred rope. A blunted tip on a wooden chisel works nice, a chisel about 4”-“6” wide is even faster. A wooden mallet helps too.

Enjoyed the video! Smart use of the saw horse as a hasty scaffold and using moss to fill the gaps.

Ya, whatever Leo said. Honestly, I have no clue what Leo said, but sounds like he knows his shit and all I know is that if I'm in a position where I need a smart use of a saw horse as a hasty scaffold, if I got Leo by my side I don't have to worry. I can be busy cooking up some hearty supper for us as he is using moss to fill the gaps.

I admire your patience, and your handiness with an axe. But I have to say... as I watched your 'log home' take shape, I found myself thinking about it's weatherproofing and overall endurance. The slanted vertical orientation of the logs, combined with a lack of any roof, basically guarantees water infiltration from rain, snow melt etc. The convex outer shape of the upright logs, in cross section, basically creates a large number of 'gutters' for moisture to follow - downward and inward. Thus the moss chinking, though it may prevent wind from penetrating for a while, essentially acts as a sponge - absorbing (and holding) water until it reaches peak absorption... then shedding it to the inside. That absorption and retention of water will also hasten wood rot - substantially. That's how rot happens. I noticed a similar issue at the base of your walls: the exposed (sawn) ends of all your logs... rest on soil. And soil is the biggest sponge going. One of the most (if not THE most) important considerations in log building is: keep the water away from the wood. For very good reason. Look at the roof overhangs on true log homes. That's a lot of work. And it isn't just for aesthetics. It comes from hard lessons learned.

That moss should keep alot of the cold air out and keep you warm inside. You may still have to put in a small stove to stay even warmer. When it snows or rains your going to get wet what with the top open . I would try and close that if I was you. That isn't going to be your permanent home is it? Nice to see you again. Thanks for the video. I look forward to all your videos. Stay safe.

Solid building... seems like a fusion tee-pee / log home. I'm concerned that it will rot from the ground up though. Typical log homes don't put the logs on wet ground, and have large roofs to keep the wood dry. Hope you get a few years anyway 😀

Use google maps or google earth that’s how I find my spots. Also if you use the Ontario Crown Land website you can get a rough idea of where the residential, crown and conservation areas are.
It can be risky but if you find a spot that is away from people you should be good to go.
