EDF 5 is legitimately one of my favorite games of all time. Gameplay is amazing and is a lot of fun, it's hilarious, and super creative. I am shocked it isn't more popular. Also, soundtrack is phenomenal.
EDF is criminally underrated games. Its just dumb fun, lower priced games, where you have fun with your buddies. A game type desperately needed today in gaming.
Fencer in 5 is so fast at high levels he can actually break the games curve since nothing can attack him lol, he gets so broken nothing can even compete
Yeah fencer was an absolute unit, and the slow in the fencer class description need to be removed, but my favorite is air raider, just chilling in the distance, calling airstrike and orbital laser while eating chips and drinking coke
On one hand: Sacrificing upgrade slots and two weapons for extreme speed. On the other hand: maxxing out your destructive capabilities in order to kill your entire team more effectively.
I love the fact that 4.1 and 5 they’re voice work is like a sort of kay faybe like it’s cheesy but they play it seriously and never break character or 4th wall break and i find that entertaining and funny
Yeah, one of my favorite parts of the EDF franchise, on top of the voicing, is the fact that they do have a story, and a great one at that, its just that instead if getting shoved down your throat in cutscenes, its integrated into the gameplay itself, making both aspects feel much better than if they were separate.
@@Grandmastergav86the lore is pretty cool, and every two games they create a new storyline, it's what I think he meant, sure, it's not TLOU 1 but it's great in it's own way, I specially like how the 2017 soldier became kind of a legend in the EDF army and the facts the songs they sing gets darker as the game goes on
I just found out that EDF 2017 was on the Xbox One and bought it. Me and my buddy spent soo many hours playing this back on the 360. When we hit a wall we'd go back to lower levels and farm armor and weapons while taking out higher difficulties of the lower levels. I loved the graphics of it and feel like it was a near perfect game. I'm not even a fan of shooter games but can spend hours happily shooting ants.
Insect Armageddon was my first EDF game, and it honestly has some of my favorite enemy designs. Those MK2 Hectors are some intimidating looking bastards. EDF 4.1 TSoND, and EDF 5 are the other ones I've played. 4.1 is my favorite. EDF5 has awesome music, but has those damn species gamma aggressors. Those things can burn in hell. I also gotta say just how much I love the Plasma Heavy Cannon in it. 7700 damage on a full charge.
2017 all the way for me! I remember renting it back in 2007 off a recommendation from the blockbuster clerk. He said "Have you ever seen a Godzilla movie? You know when the military shows up and gets stomped by the monster? Well, in this game you play as the military." Best recommendation I ever received ❤
This… this right here is my childhood. I remember playing Global defense force on a PS2 at my friends house in his tiny ass bedroom with no chairs. But the tiny ass tv was so high above his bed we had to sit on our knees, head as high as possible, on his bed to even see the screen. For hours. The greatest time of my life.
Me and my sis was introduced to EDF 2017 back when it first came out on 360. We beat that game so many times. Thanks to my uncle he was a hardcore gamer
I absolutely adored 2017 when it released. It felt like a dumb oasis in a desert of self-serious games at the time. I’ve never gotten around to 4.1 or 5 so this makes me very excited to check them out!
My biggest issues with Iron Rain is that because of the swap to UE4 along with a bigger emphasis on graphics the enemy count is drastically lower than other entries so to compensate for the difficulty they had to beef their HP up making most weapons early in the game horribly unsatisfying to use. Along with that there's a lot of cases where they tried to fix what isn't broken like the weapon system which ironically became even more of a grind than past games. That being said prowl rider is probably one of the most fun classes and I really wish they'd put it in the mainline entries someday.
Man we would play halo and edf all night long around 07-08 on the 360 and never get tired of it. Our framerate on inferno mode or whatever was like 4 it got so ridiculous
What made me fall in love with EDF was the grenade weapons in 2017. Pitching a hand-grenade a city block away was just an unparalleled experience. The campy core of the entire series in a single action.
My first EDF experience was EDF2 (called Global Defense Force on PS2). I immediately fell in love with the games sheer unhinged nature, and it made me an EDF fan My favourite part of EDF5 has to be the destructible models of every enemy
Amen, exactly my experience with the series. I'm so glad someone mislabelled the price in our local games store & got that gem of a game for €5,-. Otherwise I might've never gotten ANY of them.
I've seen someone stream Earth Defense Force 6 and was like: Yeah, this looks like a fun game. So I first bought Insect Armaggeddon and played the campaign one time. I was like: Yeah, this was ok. Then I bought EDF 4.1 and 6. I finished the campaign yesterday from 6 and I was like: I fking love this franchise. Completion on Steam will take a while but I'm all in.
Insect Armageddon really deserve more credits , it is basically the predecessor of mainline EDF classes with all theirs special perks along with multi-seated vehicle . Too bad it have way too few missions :/
This series holds an extremely important place i my heart. My kids gave me a copy of EDF 5 for fathers day, i popped it in the PS, and it helped me though the most difficult period of my life (so far) when my little brother died. EDF forever!
EDF:IA was not taht bad. Also, I'm not sure Air Raider would ever have happened if not for Tactical, nor the Fencer if not for the heavy... The biggest problem to me was that it didn't have a good sense of scale. The classic EDF series is really good at making you feel small and the aliens seem huge and that wasn't the case with IA.
Honestly, the only reasons I even want IA are: A: Tactical's turrets B: Heavy's Halo energy shield. If I do get it, then hopefully the missions are much longer than normal EDF missions, but it's sounding like it's not.
@@SherdogCreep After playing IA and currently at about rank 6 Tactical, wdym it has the biggest enemy? The Hector MKII is big, but the Argo and Quadruped Fortress outsize it. Quadruped Fortress can be excluded if you like, but the Argo is still far bigger. If you mean the queen or mothership, then I think the queens from modern EDFs are much bigger and the mother ship from EDF 5 is gigantic.
@@watermelongaming3698 The hector that comes after you on a certain survival map is taller than just about anything but then I just remembered the Argo🤦🏻♂️. In terms of walking height it’s definitely up there..
if you got the inferno ending for insect armageddon then you'd definetly rank it higher its so fucking funny lol "Lightning.. my real name is actually Roger Ops.." "Roger.. my real name is Lightning Alpha.." "I love you lightning.." "Roger Roger" 😭
I honestly think Insect Armageddon was good. Not a great EDF game, but I legitimately enjoyed everything about it outside of the hitboxes. Seeing giant insects and Hectors and being actually scared to engage them is a different feeling, I loved the intimidation factor
I had fun with Insect Armageddon, but it was definitely not great. I wasn't even sure i was doing damage to the Hectors at first since they don't react to bullets at all. Removing the funny squirming they did when shot in 2017 is criminal imo
@@maybebirb I also found the cliffhanger ending an off choice, but the extemded Inferno ending makes up for that a bit (wish we had dialogue like that throughout the entire game)
@@NamekianG I think they had to cut the game short due to either budget or time constraints. Nonetheless, me and a few friends on the EDF Discord play every Saturday, and I’ve found it to be fun and worthwhile- so I see the game as pretty good. It all comes down to your definition of “good”. The purpose of a game is mainly to provide entertainment and enjoyment, and it succeeded in doing so for me, so I’d say it was good at its job
@@maybebirb I had an alright time playing it with my brother. I got used to things not reacting to the bullets but I never really got used to only having like 10 bugs to shoot at a time. Would probably have a better time replaying on higher difficulties (as most EDF goes) and with a full team. Might do that at some point, but my focus is currently on clearing 5 100%. Hardest was a blast, will be starting Inferno soon
EDF:2017 on the Xbox 360 was my introduction to the series, and it hooked me to the point that I completed it solo on Inferno. My favorite is actually the Portable version on Vita, which adds the Wing Diver for a second playable class. The graphics take a hit to be playable on that mobile system, but it looks good enough, and played very well on the PSTV with a DualShock 4. Insect Armageddon has one thing going for it. The pesticide rifle for the "Jet Armor" in that game is stupidly fun to use. This endgame weapon could actually be fired twice in a row, followed by a full energy bar refill. All the other EDF games are more polished and entertaining, on the whole, and IA doesn't even finish telling its story. But using the pestiicide rifle to clear out the invaders actually represents a high point in the series, for me. And World Brothers, too, has a neat concept I'd like to see in core EDF titles. Going into battle with AI squadmates, whose characters with different class loadouts the player can switch to on the fly. Sprinting, or in older titles, rolling over to a squad of Troopers or Wing Divers for backup has long been a mechanic in this series. But it doesn't do anything to address the gaps that design choices made for the sake of a (often separate) co-op campaign leave in the single-player experience.
4:49 One thing I DID notice is that a lot of the more advanced enemies have a lot more tricks up their sleeves then their Japanese counterparts, like multiple more attacks and mechanics… I think they were going for a “Quality over Quantity” approach.
For me, I would rank them like this: 1. EDF 5 - the best game of the series you can get right now with a crapton of content and improved gameplay mechanics 2. EDF 4.1 - enhanced port of the already golden EDF 2025 that makes it an even better experience 3. EDF 2017 Portable (PS Vita) - for those who want a solid EDF experience on a portable, enhanced port of the 360 release 4. EDF 2025 (PS3/360 version of 4.1) - when the series started to peak 5. EDF: World Brothers - it's a solid mid game 6. EDF Insect Armaggedon - it's ok but it's not a traditional edf game when it comes to fun 7. EDF 2017 (Xbox 360) - it's very barebones, the Vita port fixed almost every issue I had with it 8. Global Defense Force/EDF 2 - mechanically outdated 9. EDF 4.1 Wing Diver - mediocre spin off 10. EDF Iron Rain - just bad 11. Simple 2000 Vol. 31: The Earth Defense Force - first game in the series, severely outdated budget game 12. EDF Tactics - crap, not even worth mentioning European spin off exclusive
@Manic_Panic 11. It released as a physical game with the name Monster Attack! on PS2 in PAL regions. It’s pretty playable, less stutter than Global Defense Force, and it doesn’t take that long to finish.
In answer to your question it took me around 400 hours to platinum EDF 4.1 and well over 500 for EDF 5. Until you've gotten the Wingdiver up to 50,000 health you don't know the meaning of the word grinding. Putting 50 hours in on EDF 5 is like simply pressing the start button for the first time. The DLC missions on Inferno are beyond crazy. Grinding out the beach level with the mechs and sliver spiders is the stuff of nightmares. But they will drop the most powerful weapons in the game. The strategies we came up with for that level really took the cake. Having played every EDF that was in English I have to say I thought Insect Armageddon wasn't that bad. Not as good as 5 of course . But far better than the first two EDF games on the Vita for sure. It was fun enough to get all the trophies.I love the leveling up system far better than picking up boxes. I like how the flying character can actually stay up in the air for more than 3 seconds and how you can increase the energy meter. Most importantly vehicles are actually useful. In EDF games they are an utter joke. Like they are made of tissue paper. The Mechs in EDF 5 were ok but even those are kind of garbage. In IA the tanks are amazing and in co op strafing with the tank is actually good. I think they should have been given a second chance to do another game. World Brothers is fun but collecting all weapons is a nightmare. I'm looking forward to EDF 6 probably next year for us since they never release one of the games here until the DLC is finished.
I had SO much fun with EDF 5 it very quickly became one of my favourite games to play. Combined with the fact I had 2 friends to play online with regularly to ramp up the difficulty and just go HAM with it was fantastic! It was a lot of fun, lots of laughs with so many friendly fire moments. some frustrating times trying to figure out the right combo of classes and weapons to beat certain levels. Just a REALLY good time! My main class has always been the Wingdiver so I'm keen to check out the Wingdiver spin-off! and Worl Brothers looks like a lot of silly fun, so thanks for bringing those to my attention.
22:24 I loved these giant robots in 4.1 (I loved their imposing animations and the way they died and exploded). I'm at around mission 35 on EDF 5 and have been disappointed that I have not seen any of them yet. They have been replaced by the Giant Frogs...which aren't as fun or scary. You mentioned in the video (26:26) that EDF 5 has all the enemies of 4.1. Do the giant robots with the long arms show up later?
Those guys that gets squished if you use Bulge Laser on their face? Yeah they're back at mid-game. I'm fine with the froggies, they're much more punchable than Hectors. Greys (cosmonauts) are ugly mf tho. The only thing disappointing for me is they replaced the dragons
I love EDF and I don't like how he had EDF IA as the worst EDF because of the fact how it was realistic and it makes sense for the less bugs but i grew up playing that EDF when i was 4 up to 6 years old
Helldivers 2 is quickly becoming a great advertisment for EDF I looked at it briefly, got shocked at the insane pricing on a million dlc's but now im looking again wondering if I could just skip all the dlc's...
personally would switch insect armageddon and iron rain purely on vibe reasons. Armageddon is like the american Godzilla or Ring, a japanese movie that was taken by an american studio and "americanized it" idk its hard to describe. Iron Rain on the other hand is trying SO hard to be Monster Hunter World
Insect Armageddon was my first Edf and what made me love the series, obviously now I see the cons after playing 4.1, 5, and 6, but it’s still one of my favorite games
What a great video! Been a fan of EDF ever since I got EDF 2017 on my xbox 360 and fun fact, it was the first game that made my console RROD! The only thing I would change is to put wingdiver at the bottom and insect armageddon above it. I was so happy to see you put iron rain above IA. I dont get why Iron rain is reviewed more negative then IA which is at 80% positive on steam or something lol. Other then that, 100% agreed with everything, im excited for EDF 6 and World brothers 2. The first time a spinoff gets a sequel, lol.
Nice ranking i say my fave is 4.1. I havent played edf 5 yet but from the current looks of it it seems a little toned down like maybe less monsters which is what ive always liked about 4.1 but im rxcited to check it out
Oh believe me EDF 5 takes what 4.1 did and amps it by 100. Especially some of the DLC levels. Nothing in 4.1 is as terrifying as silver spiders. Some of those levels will give you nightmares on Inferno.
Started from Monster Attack (EDF1) and have now played them all, spinoffs included. In 2 months. I'd say that EDF2 is my favorite one (Floating City reveal went so hard), but 5 is definitely my favorite *to play*. Haven't been playing the series for a long time, but it's become one of my favorites very quickly. Already poured 170 hours into 5, all i've got left is Inferno on all classes. I can already imagine that 6 will go very similarily
I'm so bummed they put these on Xbox anymore. My friend and I discovered 2017 on 360, we went of to get 2025. Now, he only has an Xbox while I have both Xbox and PlayStation but we can't play the new games together. Suck especially considering 2017 had success on Xbox and kind of brought the series to North America.
I played edf wb with my 6 year old and had a blast. Multiple characters basically translated to multiple lives, which made it easier on him without losing the core game loop.
I honestly wish they brought back the skyscraper tall godzilla. Or the centipede miniboss. Also EDF 6's last boss is MEH. First time the final mission in EDF genuinely disappointed me.
Agreed. Seemed easy to avoid attacks and just have to occasionally kill the aliens and androids. Not sure about inferno but I've only beaten it on hard yet I remember the mothership on 2017 being harder than EDF6 boss.
These games also play VERY well local split-screen co-op. My favorite was definitely 5, but World Brothers with the 4-character loadout was a nice change, having 8 characters fighting together with 2-player co-op.
The first EDF game I played was GDF (or EDF 2 for the vita, I played on playstation) and from that point on, I just knew this series would do well, it had that potential. Glad to see I was right.
E! D! F! The EDF deploooooys I have 4.1 (18:59) The game is a triple A title in my book. I love it. For some reason, I never bought 5, cause I heard it's "not the same" or "Other people made it." Clearly, I've been mislead.... I will get 5, and 6 when it comes out. ♥
Bro when I was 12 I would always play 2025 with my best friend, we'd literally just stay up all night and play only EDF 2025 and those are honestly some of my fondest memories ever, it's sooo good, we always had soo much fun, even though we could have played like Destiny or AC or something like that, this game always hooked us so much. I just saw that it's on sale on Xbox and I might just have to buy it again
I really liked Insect Armageddon. It was missing the campiness and I don’t think the gameplay was quite there but it was the first time I experienced a choice of different classes and it had online co-op. Im sure it hasn’t aged as well but I’d definitely put it above the Wing Diver 4.1 game. I find it crazy how he puts both of them next to each other on the list given like he said the Wing Diver Game takes 45 minutes to beat and didn’t have much replay ability where Insect Armageddon while it’s not the best when compared to the Wing Diver game it has much more replay ability, online co op, and the same asking price at launch (at this point Insect Armageddon is half the price)
EDF World brothers is definitely good enough to stand among the original titles, despite being a spinoff. Its actually my 2nd favorite EDF game behind EDF 5. It just does enough to differentiate itself while at the same time still retaining that EDF charm.
EDF5 is my favorite game ever. One of the few games I ever bothered to platinum on my PS4. It's just so much fun. Love the whole series really. Enough so that I imported a copy of EDF6. There's just no other game series that hits quite the same as EDF.
Im new to edf i played 4.1 and I fall in love but 5 is amazing 👏. I do wish tanks hade other guns? question is the dlcs enny good? My favorite class is the air Rader. And what improvements would u make if u could?
I've played 5 and gave 4.1 a try, didn't like 4.1 as much and stopped playing after a bit, tried world brothers, and to be honest, and this could be just me, but the mexican character kind of felt racist, his ability was to throw out a bottle of tequila as a molotov and after a mission he mentioned waking him up when the next one happened. I liked 5 but still had some annoyances with it, things that probably would have been resolved if I was playing multiplayer, but I played through the game single player. It annoyed me how when you get grapple enemies like the red and green ants you can't attack for a second, it annoyed me that the pill bug's attack was to knock you down over and over, the frog artillery annoyed me because the projectile knocks you down, the alien heavy flamethrower troopers annoyed me because they would make it so I couldn't see anything when they attacked, the alien walker robots were slightly annoying because they kept ducking behind buildings so I couldn't shoot them, I found it annoying that the bodies of enemies were solid objects for a couple seconds so they would eat any attacks I tried to launch and also that the bodies would pile up so much that I couldn't tell living enemies apart from corpses, and the wing divers outfit was a bit annoying because they're suppose to be a special forces unit and are fighting enemies using plasma, lasors, and acid but their armor provides no real protection from anything realistically. Still beat the game, still think about playing through the missions as a different class. Preferred class is wing diver due to speed. What I liked about the game, and the reason I didn't like 4.1 that much: Picking up armor gives the majority of the armor to the character that picked it up, armor wasn't scaling dependent and instead based on how many armor crates you picked up, picking up armor gave armor to the other classes you could play, picking up weapons crates divided them among the classes so every class got some weapons when you played a mission, if you got multiple of the same weapon it would level that weapon up.
Dude, complaining about a mexican stereotype character. Keyword character. (The stereotype does exist.) And maybe what some players want to play as including mexicans. Complaining about a girl character's armour being too little. It's a fantasy game. Also the ranger and air raider have terrible armour too. What are you a Mary Sue writer? "I need my girl characters covered head to toe in berka. Fight the patriarchy." 😂😂😂 Anyways do you buddy.
Wait, did you seriously complain about WD outfit? It's a fun outfit, and they've changed a lot between games. Her also having little armor makes sense. They are a high-speed, glass canon division that needs to be as light and aerodynamic as possible to evade enemies. The skimpy outfit is both fun and lore consistent.
EDF5 was my favorite two. I loved the frog like aliens and the earth commanders were like: they look like us!!! Me I'm thinking, get your eyes checked, it looks like a frog. Then close to half way through the game, the big reveal where we find out the frog aliens are slaves to the master aliens, the Greys, that was awesome. My most favorite aspect of the game was the final boss against the space God IE the nameless. Fighting a God was fun, as it was the first supernatural extraterrestrial life form we fight.
Edf 5 is good, but I want to bring back enemy robots instead of frogs. Robots were cool and dangerous opponents and if they were covered with gold armor, it would be even cooler.
I'm now currently playing Earth defense force 4.1 the shadow of new despair, trust me this game is just awesome, this game is way better than 2023 games
The Version of 2017 for Vita has also been released on Switch and it is amazing. They added the Wing Diver and a lot of wacky weapons. It runs buttery smooth on Switch. Well worth it for fans of the 360 release

They were one of my favorites you see, when I was a kid, I went to my local gamestop, and the first one I found was Armageddon, and that 1 was my favorite, it was awesome. However, as a kid, it was really hard, especially the final battle, which I got stuck in In the final Chapter which I didn't know what to do.I Like when the second round was coming with all the lasers and plaza fire raining from the sky, I Didn't know what to do I was really scared to knowing what will happen and stuff, but yeah I was bad without when I was a kid.Thankfully, I replayed it back two thousand These three back 2 Two thousand eighteen, and it was a lot of fun, and as a teenager, I actually beat one point one final level, and I actually did it, but yeah, these games really do hold a special place in my heart and I love these three games, I never played the others, but I wish I could

i have played many many hours of 4.1 and im just bored of it at this point, there isnt a lot left for me to do, i want something new and i was just wondering if 5 is going to give that too me or if its just going to feel too similar to 4 to really matter.
EDF 6 will probably give some different feels tho, the story itself were narrated more clearly and the NPCs can react the storm-1 a.k.a the player movements, they adds new monsters like floating kraken, hordes of android, etc.

I thinki would be cool if they did a EDF game with a Starship Troopers collaboration. It would make the perfect Starship Troopers game.
There is a Japanese collaboration video in the EDF5 promotion.
...or maybe a Starship Troopers Musou game? Hmm?
Our framerate on inferno mode or whatever was like 4 it got so ridiculous
there was an official novel of EDF based on 4.1 timeline and the story itself was about the Lambda team, sadly it was only available in Japan tho
Dang but I think there is an EDF movie in the works named E.D.F.
I'm glad you have included THE ALMOST NOT KNOWN wing diver game
What made me fall in love with EDF was the grenade weapons in 2017. Pitching a hand-grenade a city block away was just an unparalleled experience. The campy core of the entire series in a single action.
I think the budget graphics suit these games well, EDF games have that classic B-Movie sci-fi monster flick vibe.
My first EDF experience was EDF2 (called Global Defense Force on PS2). I immediately fell in love with the games sheer unhinged nature, and it made me an EDF fan
My favourite part of EDF5 has to be the destructible models of every enemy
Amen, exactly my experience with the series. I'm so glad someone mislabelled the price in our local games store & got that gem of a game for €5,-.
Otherwise I might've never gotten ANY of them.
EDF 6 is so good all the improvements are damn good
I've seen someone stream Earth Defense Force 6 and was like: Yeah, this looks like a fun game.
You'll have to update us on how long it takes for completist mate. Should be good fun atleast
Insect Armageddon really deserve more credits , it is basically the predecessor of mainline EDF classes with all theirs special perks along with multi-seated vehicle . Too bad it have way too few missions :/
Worse there was dlc missions planned but got canned due to the lack of popularity.
Well that kinda sucks like edf insect armageddon is one of my favorite games out thier.
nah it sucked, too much bullet sponge to make up for the few enemies on screen at a given time
Bumping this to say a new interview from New York Comic Con by Gematsu revealed that IA is the reason 2027 onwards has multiple classes.
@@watch.v-dQw4w9WgXcQyeah, but hectors in 2025 ARENT bullet sponges? What about those AWFUL red drones? Bullet sponges show up in EDF alot.
Honestly, the only reasons I even want IA are:
A: Tactical's turrets
B: Heavy's Halo energy shield.
If I do get it, then hopefully the missions are much longer than normal EDF missions, but it's sounding like it's not.
Insect Armageddon has the biggest enemy out of all the series though…
@@watermelongaming3698 Had to look it up, Hugo..maybe not the tallest walking EDF enemy but still pretty huge O
if you got the inferno ending for insect armageddon then you'd definetly rank it higher its so fucking funny lol
"Lightning.. my real name is actually Roger Ops.."
"Roger.. my real name is Lightning Alpha.."
"I love you lightning.."
"Roger Roger"
😭
I honestly think Insect Armageddon was good. Not a great EDF game, but I legitimately enjoyed everything about it outside of the hitboxes. Seeing giant insects and Hectors and being actually scared to engage them is a different feeling, I loved the intimidation factor
I had fun with Insect Armageddon, but it was definitely not great.
I wasn't even sure i was doing damage to the Hectors at first since they don't react to bullets at all. Removing the funny squirming they did when shot in 2017 is criminal imo
@@NamekianG That’s fair. My main complaint about IA was the fact that it was hard to tell if you were even dealing damage most of the time
@@maybebirb I also found the cliffhanger ending an off choice, but the extemded Inferno ending makes up for that a bit (wish we had dialogue like that throughout the entire game)
Great video. Thanks. EDF Wing Diver is also on PSN. I played it on the PS4.
Damn you’ve been introducing me to so many underground series lately, keep it up 👍🏼
EDF:2017 on the Xbox 360 was my introduction to the series, and it hooked me to the point that I completed it solo on Inferno.
4:49 One thing I DID notice is that a lot of the more advanced enemies have a lot more tricks up their sleeves then their Japanese counterparts, like multiple more attacks and mechanics…
I think they were going for a “Quality over Quantity” approach.
For me, I would rank them like this:
1. EDF 5 - the best game of the series you can get right now with a crapton of content and improved gameplay mechanics
2. EDF 4.1 - enhanced port of the already golden EDF 2025 that makes it an even better experience
3. EDF 2017 Portable (PS Vita) - for those who want a solid EDF experience on a portable, enhanced port of the 360 release
4. EDF 2025 (PS3/360 version of 4.1) - when the series started to peak
5. EDF: World Brothers - it's a solid mid game
6. EDF Insect Armaggedon - it's ok but it's not a traditional edf game when it comes to fun
7. EDF 2017 (Xbox 360) - it's very barebones, the Vita port fixed almost every issue I had with it
8. Global Defense Force/EDF 2 - mechanically outdated
9. EDF 4.1 Wing Diver - mediocre spin off
10. EDF Iron Rain - just bad
11. Simple 2000 Vol. 31: The Earth Defense Force - first game in the series, severely outdated budget game
12. EDF Tactics - crap, not even worth mentioning European spin off exclusive
@Manic_Panic
11. It released as a physical game with the name Monster Attack! on PS2 in PAL regions. It’s pretty playable, less stutter than Global Defense Force, and it doesn’t take that long to finish.
Iron Rain is very underrated, in my opinion.
Pre-ordered EDF 6 today and this showed up on my feed lmao
I decided to get EDF 5 after badgers “review” of 4.1, and I can just say it’s already up there with my favorite games!
Do the giant robots with the long arms show up later?
you mean those hectors? no they didn't appear in EDF 5 at all, they were replaced by Colonist (Bipedal Frog) and Cosmonaut (grey alien)
@@Misakimori_NM i always found their names hilarious
Those guys that gets squished if you use Bulge Laser on their face? Yeah they're back at mid-game.
I'm fine with the froggies, they're much more punchable than Hectors. Greys (cosmonauts) are ugly mf tho. The only thing disappointing for me is they replaced the dragons
@@Misakimori_NM you forget the three long leg fake striders man
@@NoobPCGamer1267 you mean Deroy? They really annoying when you use WD not carefully since it will got stunned in the air
i love edf and i cant wait for 6 my first edf game was Armageddon
EDF:IA was my first edf game and I loved it
I like how a demerit for IR is that it only has 54 Missons. I still do like IR, even if it's just okay in comparison to 5 and 6.
I love EDF and I don't like how he had EDF IA as the worst EDF because of the fact how it was realistic and it makes sense for the less bugs but i grew up playing that EDF when i was 4 up to 6 years old
Helldivers 2 is quickly becoming a great advertisment for EDF
I looked at it briefly, got shocked at the insane pricing on a million dlc's but now im looking again wondering if I could just skip all the dlc's...
I keep forgetting EDF5 was the first to add actual conventional aliens, on account of them looking just like us!
personally would switch insect armageddon and iron rain purely on vibe reasons.
Armageddon is like the american Godzilla or Ring, a japanese movie that was taken by an american studio and "americanized it" idk its hard to describe.
Iron Rain on the other hand is trying SO hard to be Monster Hunter World
Another great video keep it up Jonathan!
Insect Armageddon was my first Edf and what made me love the series, obviously now I see the cons after playing 4.1, 5, and 6, but it’s still one of my favorite games
World Brothers was much more fun than I expected it would be. I feel like it could be a great gateway for EDF addiction to a newcomers.
@Viyas_ There also 2 characters from Oneechanbara make their appearance as DLC.
4.1 has a very silly tone!
Ranger screams in despair, watching his comrades being brutally devoured by GIANT INSECTS in an increasingly hopeless war.
I Just Discovered these games they look awesome, I think I saw a friend playing one a Long time ago & Now found out what it was!
Some of those levels will give you nightmares on Inferno.
edf framerate is worse on ps5, edf 4 is cleaner
Multiple characters basically translated to multiple lives, which made it easier on him without losing the core game loop.
bro insect Armageddon is honestly my favorite one by far
The only think I can really disagree with is the dragons and flying frogs. Probably the only reasons I still play 2017
Love the Hylics 2 music used lol, just got into this series and really enjoying it, playing 4.1, may go to 5 next lol
Not sure about inferno but I've only beaten it on hard yet I remember the mothership on 2017 being harder than EDF6 boss.
my first edf game was insect Armageddon, then i played 4.1, 5 and iron rain, but i like 5 the most
Completely agree man. Absolutely love the EDF series
E! D! F! The EDF deploooooys
I have 4.1 (18:59) The game is a triple A title in my book. I love it. For some reason, I never bought 5, cause I heard it's "not the same" or "Other people made it." Clearly, I've been mislead.... I will get 5, and 6 when it comes out. ♥
My first experience of EDF was Monster Attack on the ps2 it was so surreal and I played the hell out of that game!
Played 2017 yonks ago. Such a great game. Came here to see if it was ever bettered.
4.1 is best. 6 is second best but slowly taking over the top spot.
Just got EDF5 last week. A-MA-ZING!!!!
For me, 5 and 4.1, because 4.1 still has Hectors, and watching them go boom was so satisfying...
27:29 if you can see what you are doing, your arent playing it right
Bro when I was 12 I would always play 2025 with my best friend, we'd literally just stay up all night and play only EDF 2025 and those are honestly some of my fondest memories ever, it's sooo good, we always had soo much fun, even though we could have played like Destiny or AC or something like that, this game always hooked us so much.
Insect Armageddon is more like a 90s Hollywood action movie as opposed to a Japanese B movie
I actually really liked EDF IA alot,I was hoping for more of that type.
I played 2025 on my Xbox Series X for many hours. Because there is no 4.1, it's just that or 2017 and Armageddon. 😅
EDF World brothers is definitely good enough to stand among the original titles, despite being a spinoff. Its actually my 2nd favorite EDF game behind EDF 5. It just does enough to differentiate itself while at the same time still retaining that EDF charm.
I played 4.1 for a few months and I literally got so use to the controls that I developed ultra instinct and dodged hundreds of attacks at a time
"HEY! Are you okay!?"
"That's what they say..."
- EDF 4.1 NPC combat dialogue
Alright but world brothers lets you play as 4 air raiders at the same time, obliterating some poor sap with like 6+ air strikes is amazing.
It annoyed me how when you get grapple enemies like the red and green ants you can't attack for a second,
it annoyed me that the pill bug's attack was to knock you down over and over,
the frog artillery annoyed me because the projectile knocks you down,
the alien heavy flamethrower troopers annoyed me because they would make it so I couldn't see anything when they attacked,
the alien walker robots were slightly annoying because they kept ducking behind buildings so I couldn't shoot them,
I found it annoying that the bodies of enemies were solid objects for a couple seconds so they would eat any attacks I tried to launch and also that the bodies would pile up so much that I couldn't tell living enemies apart from corpses,
and the wing divers outfit was a bit annoying because they're suppose to be a special forces unit and are fighting enemies using plasma, lasors, and acid but their armor provides no real protection from anything realistically.
Still beat the game, still think about playing through the missions as a different class.
Preferred class is wing diver due to speed.
What I liked about the game, and the reason I didn't like 4.1 that much:
Picking up armor gives the majority of the armor to the character that picked it up,
armor wasn't scaling dependent and instead based on how many armor crates you picked up,
picking up armor gave armor to the other classes you could play,
picking up weapons crates divided them among the classes so every class got some weapons when you played a mission,
if you got multiple of the same weapon it would level that weapon up.
Fight the patriarchy." 😂😂😂
Anyways do you buddy.
This was a pretty soy boy review my guy. It's a game bro
5 was great til they pussified it with the dlc weapons pack. Great video! Love EDF!
I miss games like these that prioritizes gameplay over story Im sick of games that have turned into Movies.
Edf 5 is good, but I want to bring back enemy robots instead of frogs. Robots were cool and dangerous opponents and if they were covered with gold armor, it would be even cooler.
insert barga trying to destroy golden armored Hector
"those frogs look like they're afraid of water.....but they aren't"
16:09 Lmao Who the hell's flying these things
I'm now currently playing Earth defense force 4.1 the shadow of new despair, trust me this game is just awesome, this game is way better than 2023 games
The Version of 2017 for Vita has also been released on Switch and it is amazing. They added the Wing Diver and a lot of wacky weapons. It runs buttery smooth on Switch. Well worth it for fans of the 360 release

Honestly I love earth Defense force, these games were one of my favorites as a kid, and I love these games. They were one of my favorites you see, when I was a kid, I went to my local gamestop, and the first one I found was Armageddon, and that 1 was my favorite, it was awesome. It was a little bit difficult but I actually figured it out what to do honestly, and I enjoyed it. The other one, the twenty seventeen one, was also my favorite And of course you got earth defense force, twenty seventeen, which that one was also made second favorite, two And also my also favorite 4.1, which was also my favorite. These 3 were really my favorite. I would play them everywhere. Well, I would play The Other 2. The other 2 were my childhood.
Armageddon.
And Earth Defense.
Forces, twenty seventeen Were, and I played those 2 everywhere at home. I would always play big at my mom's work at a friend's house. You name it, and as for the other one 4.1 I discovered it when I moved to Indiana.
And And that game was also my biggest favorite one ever. I enjoy that 1.

Insect armageddon us my favorite. It was amazing to play when i was a kid
i have played many many hours of 4.1 and im just bored of it at this point, there isnt a lot left for me to do, i want something new and i was just wondering if 5 is going to give that too me or if its just going to feel too similar to 4 to really matter.
EDF 6 will probably give some different feels tho, the story itself were narrated more clearly and the NPCs can react the storm-1 a.k.a the player movements, they adds new monsters like floating kraken, hordes of android, etc.
