I found your method last year during quarantine. Ive been struggling for 3 years to get them to trail up and over a pole, never getting flower buds. Proud to announce after using this method i now have a budding plant with ants coming in very interested 🙌🏼 thanks mate, its hard to get an australian video abour dragonfruit, i appreciate your videos alot. Cheers! 🙌🏼

Thank you so much. Lots of much needed information for my newest addition to the garden. I was just about ready to remove a huge stump caused by our recent hurricane Irma. Now it can stay and be a wonderful stand for my dragon. Have a wonderful day!
I was so glad to stumble onto this channel because of this video, after I subscribed and have been watching ever since. I was lucky enough to have a chance at eating yellow dragon fruit just last year as locally (chicago) they sell the red variety with the white flesh that is very muted in flavor. The yellows have become my literal gold standard for suggesting this fruit. I try to give them to people who have never had them, but at $10/piece that gets steep. I recently had a dream that I was in a yard surrounded by this lovely fruit, that is now my goal in life. Thank you Mark for changing my life, just by doing what you love and sharing it with all of us.
For those who haven't tried yellow dragon fruit, it's like a vanilla watermelon. The texture and sweetness of watermelon but the flavor is sugar and vanilla. It's really good.
Depends on the varierty. Some are very ‘meh,’ others are gorgeous. In general, I find the best red/burgundy coloured fruits taste very berry-like. The best white varieties laste more like vanilla mixed with melon and have a really smooth taste. Depends on your own personal preferences.
I had a piece of Dragon fruit while at work so I looked up how to grow it and came to this video. This video was so entertaining and made me laugh ....thanks for changing a dull day at work to a bit of fun!!!
Had my first yellow dragon fruit today - DEEEELICIOUS!!! Oddly enough I had tried the red one a while back for the first time, and it was tasteless, so what a surprise when I tried the yellow one. Thanks for the tips, as at $5 US per fruit, somewhat out of my budget and will have to grow my own. Cheers!
Try different varieties. Some, red or white are very tasteless. Others are out of this world. I can’t say that either is better than the other, they both taste great. But you have to find the best varieties. Some breeders seem to have gone for size and shelf-life, over brix (sugar content,) and taste. But if you are lucky enough to live near where they grow it, you may find that the smaller varieties actually taste better. That’s the case where I live.
Thanks for this video, the timing couldn't have been better! I was gifted with 12 cuttings from mature well producing plants, 3 types (yellow, red/red, and purple outside red inside). Now I know how to plant them properly.
I did this two years ago and now I have a huge crop of dragon fruit from a plant in a big pot on a bench. So pleased this works. The trellis is going really well too.
Thanks Mark. Your video has really helped me as I've just recently planted some dragon fruit and was in the dark until now. I'm now an avid fan of your channel and subscriber. Now I'm going to venture into more self sufficient gardening thanks to you. Cheers mate. Keep up the great work
I am in the northwest part of the US and I am hooked on this channel. I wish I had that land! I have never seen a dragon fruit, I wonder if we could grow them here?

Thanks, I have had a very poor excuse for a ‘cactus’ ‘living’ in a tiny donkey planter with out a drainage hole for 30 years!! After this extended period it was identified as a Dragon fruit cactus and I’d love to give it some much deserved TLC. I live 100km north of Sydney and this little cactus lives in a micro climate, so it’s time to act, let’s see if it can respond. Thanks again.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I purchased a dragon fruit plant about a year ago and it’s on my patio. I’m going to move it outside and use your method.

I think the hanging-down method makes a prettier dragon fruit plant. It reminds me a little of Christmas cactus or epiphyllums. Thanks for this informative video! I’ve never eaten fresh dragon fruit, just some mediocre dried fruit from the Trader Joe’s store. However, my son says the fresh fruit is delicious. Many of my Southern California neighbors are growing dragon fruit in their front yards/gardens. I suppose our climate is good!
Love dragon fruit spent some time growing up on a nursery with a large dragon fruit plantation. Interesting you chose to grow the least common yellow spiny ones. I personally prefer the red flesh one they grow big and don't have spines
Growing up on a nursery sounds like a great childhood to me! We do grow the red variety also but I actually prefer the yellow because they tend to set fruit easier here where we are and we love the slightly sweeter flavour but all dragon fruit a great in my opinion. Cheers :)
hey, i was wondering, does the dragon fruit varieties that are sold in store self pollinate most of the time? i'm having a hard time finding someone who know about it.
Oh but the taste of the yellow variety is so superior. Maybe I just got a bad one, but I have only ever had one red one, and it was like eating moist paper, but LOVE the yellow.

They are my arch nemesis in the garden and we fight it out daily.
I watched your video last year and got a dragon fruit cutting off my mum. This year my plant is going crazy. I have lots of flowers, there are ants living in the pot and the stand I made is working really well. Thanks for all the tips and it looks like in the next few days my first flower will open.

i had a dragon fruit plant, but my soil doesnt drain very well.....it grew up to a certain point then kinda got stuck.....took forever to die off, but it eventually did.....now i know how to do it right. thanks!
Thank you for the video, my aunt and uncle have dragonfruit flowering right now. It's years old and flowered last year but didnt set fruit, hopefully we'll see some this year. Cheers !
Thank you so much for your information- I just received a small dragon fruit cutting and am very excited about it!Can the dragon fruit climb on a wall and fruit from there?
The Pitaya or dragon fruit, with a reedy shade over the top, could be associated with the Sphinx... or rectangular land plots along a line, next to prickly pears in squares and a circle...
I am growing them mostly in pots but it never give fruit in five years i got about ten plants the one in the ground fruit every second year and I have to care for them a lot in winter from frost it can get -4 dg I will try stand them high Thank you for very informative video
try tipping your plant cold weather stuns the growth. low light it will grow but thin and will not produce it needs a dry period.. if you hit the right conditions a happy plant is a fruitful plant ;) keep it warm, well fertalized, well lit and only hanging branches can produce flowers usually, tipping the ends may help they like alot of organic matter treat it like a garden plant that needs lots of care light cycles can force flowering aswell
I like your energetic presentation. I didnt know that you can grow dragon fruit this way. For me I just planted my dragon fruit on the fence using the steel bar as trellis. I was able to harvest 5 medium size fruits this year.
Great informative video. As soon as I saw how you had it planted I had an epiphany. My awesome Cambodian neighbor showed me how he was growing a bunch of Pitaya at his place. They were planted at the base of trees cut off at around chest height to act as something for them to climb. Ultimately, they would have done the cascade, but due to the fact we live in the very wet tropics, they did well for a time and then would get this horrible, skeletonizing rot that would start from the base and eat its way up the Pitaya's sections. They survived, but they were not in any shape to be thinking about producing fruits. I think how you have them up in pots *on top* of the stump may be the solution we need here for out particular climate. We get anywhere from 380-500cm of water in normal years here, so even if root water-logging isn't an issue for a particular species, the splatter effect the rain has of driving bacteria and fungi up the sides of everything exposed can sometimes have devastating effects if it goes on too long. I have no started my own Pitaya yet because I felt more research was in order, but after seeing your video I think I've got it. By the way... GREAT choice in cultivars! This yellow and the tiny, deep-purple "Voodoo Child" are my favorites. Incredible flavor in both!
+Seeking Seeds thank you! Yes, it sounds like a good plan to at least give this method a go where you are because it's not the water that df hate (these plants love lots if water) it's the drainage and fungi caused by dampness that can hurt the vines. Growing diwn is definitely worth a try! Cheers :)
What a tribute to Steve Erwin as mentioned already. All this gentleman has to do is have a few redbulls and Tackle one of these dragon fruit plants. Thanks for the great tips! i think i'll just put my pot up instead of planting into the ground!!!
I just harvested dragon fruit from my yard in Southern California. They were larger than softballs and dark pink with white inside. They were gorgeous and yummy! And they're so unique. Someone said they looked like an alien fruit. LOL

Thank you so much for your information- I just received a small dragon fruit cutting and am very excited about it!Can the dragon fruit climb on a wall and fruit from there?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with people 🙂👍
Ingenious!
wow it is my first time to see yellow dragon fruits. thanks for the video, i am a new subscriber.
Cheers :)
Wow, thank you, your tips are very helpful man! I’m attractive by this plants! I just bought three little cutting recently! Awesome 😎.

Love your videos and thank you for posting. What varieties do you recommend that are self-pollinating
Thank you! This yellow spiny variety sets easily and the animals won't touch it either lol... Cheers :)
What a tribute to Steve Erwin as mentioned already. All this gentleman has to do is have a few redbulls and Tackle one of these dragon fruit plants. Thanks for the great tips! i think i'll just put my pot up instead of planting into the ground!!!
Super informative. By far the best way Ive seen to grow them and fantastic tips!
I just harvested dragon fruit from my yard in Southern California. They were larger than softballs and dark pink with white inside. They were gorgeous and yummy! And they're so unique. Someone said they looked like an alien fruit. LOL
