    So glad I searched and found this video. I just bought my first piece of dragon fruit at the grocer the other day. Never eaten it and wasn't even sure the name when I purchased it.
    Now I know how to save the seed 🤗 thank you!

    2:57 I found an easyer way to get the jel off of the yellow dragon fruit seeds Is to put the seeds in a strainer take it to the sink and spray the seeds for about a minute and after a minute most of the jel will come off of the seeds while your spraying

    • @geriannroth449
      @geriannroth449 2 роки тому

      You can also take the seeds put them in a fine strainer then add some normal building sand to the seeds in the strainer & just rub the seeds with the sand for a little while then lightly rinse with water either from your spray bottle or a slow trickle from the tap & soon your seeds will be mostly free of the pulp.

      That’s what I did. I also saw somewhere that you can dry them on a paper towel and then the stuff just crumbles right off. I didn’t know when I would be planting them so I did that after rinsing. It worked really well. I think they must have ALL sprouted and I have a hard time throwing them out!

    I repotted my dragonfruit today for the first time and got some invisible spikes in my hands. What's the best way to remove them when you can't see them? Or could it be that I just got pricked by a hairy little thorn and not have one stuck in my finger?

      I use general or 'all purpose' potting soil for my young dragon fruits. I may also add perlite for added drainage.
      For my older plants, I add about 1.5 tbsp of general granular fertilizer (or bloom-boosting fertilizer during the fruiting season) every 4-6 weeks.

    • @shamrockgirl804
      @shamrockgirl804  Рік тому +2

      For most dragon fruit seeds, you don’t have to remove the membrane because there isn’t a lot of gel around the seeds. Make sure not to have the soil too wet and provide good air circulation to prevent mold.
      But for larger seeds such as the Ecuador Paloras (megalanthus) that I planted, I’d remove the membrane or let the seeds dry out before you plant them.

    • @shamrockgirl804

      Removing the gel on the seeds is optional, but removing them will allow the seeds to germinate faster. I remove the gel from the larger Ecuador Palora yellow dragon fruits because of the greater risk of mold or rot if the soil is too wet. I’ve sprouted the tiny seeds with the gel on, and they grew fine.

      It takes many years for a seed-started plant to bear fruit. The seedlings featured in this video are now 4.5 years old (June 2022) and they haven't shown signs of budding. You can also graft a seedling to a mature rootstock, and it might grow faster than a seedling.
      But cuttings from mature plants can fruit within 1-2 years, depending on the growing conditions. I bought some cuttings last year (spring 2021) and a few of them are budding right now (June 2022). I plan to post some videos about them soon.

      I did an experiment with two containers to see if the seeds would spout with or without the gel on. The gel-on seeds took longer to sprout and it needed to be aired out more to avoid mold growth on the soil.
