Here's what we cover in this golf video.
As a golfer, understanding how to square the club face at impact is crucial to playing good consistent golf. However, way too many players spend way too much time thinking and trying to get the body to deliver the club face square impact. The only thing that really controls the club face are your wrists. And we need to start learning what it is to control that club face so we can get it square more often while the body, the torso, the shoulders, hips, all have an effect on how we deliver the club.
Alex Fortey from the Art of Simple Golf gives you simple tips to improve your golf swing. Enjoy this golf video to help you get closer to having YOUR perfect golf swing.

Thanks for this video. I recently started focusing on the wrist feel and mindset. I quickly started to appreciate the benefits. Not focusing on the body and positions and letting the hands and wrists do the work seemed to synch up the body. The best feeling was how my swing became more relaxed and confident. Less effort and more power. Alex this video is spot on. My swing feels more flowing and not as quick. The hips and body react to my intentions. It does feel like magic when the ball seems to just fly off the face and the effort was minimal. I also found my knees flex and balance became more intuitive, more automatic instead of being uncomfortable over the ball. The falling into the swing feel is still a work in progress. When I do it close to perfect the swing is even more fluid with the best compression. I am working on timing instead of body mechanics. If the hands and wrist do what they are supposed to do the fall through the ball seems to be more of a reaction for me. As always you keep it simple!

I remember discovering this and how fun it was to practice all of the shot shapes with the discovery. Then you can learn to punch it low and shape it. Also, you can hit the ball a long ways (not as long of course) with relaxed wrists that whip through the impact area without a big shoulder turn proving the hands and wrists do a lot. It's nice to hit a soft golf ball with these types of repeated practiced shots.

There are so many movements that the wrist is possible of making. Tiny movements make a huge difference to club face alignment. If you think that you can make exactly the right wrist movements at EXACTLY the right moment you are crazy. Look at how a trebuchet works. It has a consistent release despite having a loose hinge and no control where the “wrist” is. What’s the answer! Leave your grip and wrists very loose, turn your hips and shoulders in the correct fashion and allow physics to produce the same result over and over. There’s a reason it’s called a release. Because it’s not a movement we do. It’s one that we allow to happen!

So much truth in this. I've been using my wrists to close the club face (and hands a little forward at impact) for a while now and I've gone from a life-long slice to a consistently straight ball flight. With me there's an added benefit of better compression and distance. It felt weird at the beginning I must admit.

I finally figured this out a couple years ago, was always keeping my wrists completely locked, and would slice the ball so hard it almost turned into a boomerang lol.
Now my only difficulty is moving my wrists the correct amount, often I’ll over-correct and turn them too much upon contact, causing a hook.

I just got back from tge range. Working with my new 4i. I hit a bunch with open and closed faces. In a short time, I dialed in my draws and could land them on the target. Left to right, not as much yet, but I could also get them much closer down the middle. Activating the wrists gave me more distance to with changing nothing.
Thank you for the great tip.

This is fantastic. Solved my long-time issue of open club face. And I also felt it's important to mention the uncocking of the wrists. I played 20 years of golf not realizing I needed to uncock them during the downswing. No wonder I always hit thin and slice.

Such a joy to find this video!
I am a 1 handicap and all I think about is flicking my wrists back, and flicking them through. It’s everything every teacher tells you not to do, but I put my consistency up against anybody’s. My ball flight is incredibly straight, and all I think about is the wrists. Specifically my right wrist. I flick it back as if I’m going to skim a stone across some water and then I flick it through with the same motion. No thought about shoulder turn or hip turn or what the bodies doing or any of that! I don’t think about my grip or where the club is at any point in my swing. Again, just flick it back and flick it through with the right wrist. No, I don’t get any that hook left. Maybe it’s my timing or whatever, but everything is just straight. It’s a joy to swing this way and it takes all the other thoughts out of play.
I was really happy to find this video this morning. Thank you very much.

For some reason I thought that was considered "flipping" your wrists when you do that, but I think I"ve been incorrect about this this whole time. Is flipping your wrist losing your bend in the right wrist and not having to do with supinating and pronating?

I've been playing golf 2 years. I've taken lessons and watched a million UA-cam videos. Still, my shots were all over the place. Hooked, sliced, thinned, fatted, etc. A month ago I learned about flattening my lead wrist. Wow, I've turned into a straight up assassin with my golf clubs. I hit (almost) everything dead straight. On top of that, I've added about 20% distance with every club. I'm the honorary mayor of Compression City. Sad that none of my coaches caught and corrected this simple issue.

I have had difficulty in consistently getting the grip in the right place in the hand. I saw an old video of Manuel De La Torres who talked about gripping the club like you are shaking someone's hand, or he suggested gripping the club like you are holding an umbrella. Both ideas have helped me be more consistent in my grip. Do you agree with that approach?

Do you think wrists should be active or passive (active meaning I try and snap my wrists as opposed to letting it happen). I'm a 3 index but driver ball speed is 140 and have never really tried powering through the ball with my wrists since I hit so straight, but would like more distance. Thanks

  • @39zack
    @39zack 9 місяців тому

Yup, my local pro learned me this as I shoot to the right often.
When I learned this I found out that often, in the backswing, the club "automatically" opens up and I dont feel it happens. And if you try to hold the club so hard it wont move during backswing, it gives other problems.
But since Im used to not do that movenent for 2 years, the movenent of the wrist is not that natural to me yet, but when I get it right, the ball goes straight.

Watch the head of the club move in unison w your hands and arms.
