    Yes, however the process is not as simple as you are thinking.
    Digital sculptures (from any program) are too dense (in poly-count) to be efficiently used by animation software, or game engines. So, you need to 'rotopologize' the mesh first. That is: create a low-poly mesh which wraps the sculpture, then project the hi-rez sculpt detail into texture & normal maps for the low-poly mesh.
    After that, you can use them for Animation and Unity.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  11 років тому +1

    Yes. Sculptris is the best program to begin digital sculpting.

    I love the entire video, but I'm specifically impressed by the care and detail you put into the nose and ears. It's hard to make them look realistic with 3D clay, but you aced it!

      +MrKoryMisun Well this technically isn't clay though

    • @MrKoryMisun

      That's why I said '3D clay'.
      Rather than unnecessarily correcting me, go better yourself.

    • @musicalsoul4542
      @musicalsoul4542 8 років тому

      MrKoryMisun So you would rather make yourself look like a fool while someone here is just trying to help? How ungrateful, and besides, clay is already 3D in real life so your comment makes no sense

    • @MrKoryMisun
      @MrKoryMisun 8 років тому +7

      I don't have to be grateful to someone I don't know, who doesn't know me. Your reply to my comment was to stir up trouble. It doesn't have to make sense to you, since I was not talking to you.

    • @musicalsoul4542

      MrKoryMisun Oh my.... Seems like someone's mother didn't teach them proper manners, this is how you respond to someone who's trying to help you.... And correcting isn't to stir up trouble, just admit you're wrong and I can correct you, jeez, how prideful are you? You're actually worse than one of my friends, she makes up excuses for a lot of things but when she knows she's wrong she admits it

    Not directly, but you can use Sculptris to model, then retopologize and rig for creations for animation in Blender/Maya/Max/etc. That's all a bit more complicated than just sculpting, so If you're just starting, trying and stick to the basics for awhile before moving to animation.

    Just watching this video was better than any Sculptris tutorials i've seen. I was getting noplace with it, and now within a couple of hours I have a head that would'v taken me at least 3x as long to make with polygon modelling in maya, and that's after years of experience modelling in maya and I just installed scuptris at noon today.. wow, the future isn't all bad!

    It's actually much easier to create mirrored spheres for eyes by reducing the amount of work and keeping a nice round shape while you sculpt the eyelids without fear.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    @sayumi1989 Glad to here my video helped you get started.
    By the end of the video, my mesh was ~12,500 triangles. But that's slightly low, even for a bust, so I'd say yours is only a bit too dense. I always sculpt with the Quality slider ~25%-33%, and I when sculpting flat areas I zoom out. Both help keep Sculptris from adding more details than needed.
    If your mesh get's too dense, you can always clean it with the Reduce Brush, and Reduce All button.

    Yes I am, and yes Blender is arguably better than Sculptris in many ways... granted Sculptris is much easier to learn, and Blender needs a little tweaking to make the brushes feel on-par, IMO. Blender and Sculptris are fully interchangeable, you can bring your Sculptris models into Blender without any problems.
    If you're completely new to digital sculpting, stick with Sculptris for awhile while you get the hang of things. Blender has a lot of really cool, more advanced features that come later.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    @nonchalant1985 Yes. Every sculpting software I know of (Sculptris, Zbrush, Mudbox, Blender) uses the pressure sensitivity from a pen tablet. Soon, Blender will even support pen tilt. Sculpting with a mouse is many times slower, but it's reasonably possible if you turn the pressure down and get good at using the spacebar adjustment popup in Sculptris. The creator of Scultris has made some impressive models with a mouse before. Still, I recomend picking up a Bamboo tablet somewhere.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    Hold 'H' and click on the mesh. Ctrl-H to unhide. Or, you can box select areas to hide by holding Ctrl and dragging on the canvas.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    @nonchalant1985 I've never used a Bamboo tablet, but I've known people who had both and said they couldn't really tell a difference. In fact, they said that often they preferred the Bamboo because it's less bulky and lighter weight. With sculpting and painting, usually you're layering your strokes anyways, plus most applications smooth out the pen input so you get smooth transitions between pressure levels. In short, I recommend the Bamboo, especially considering the price difference.

    @xSomaHolidayx Thanks. Hold 'H' (for 'Hide') and left-click the section of the model you want hidden. Alternatively, you can hide arbitrary portions of the mesh by holding Ctrl + Click-Dragging a region over the model.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    @Creaturiste No slice tool in Sculptris unfortunately. To "erase" parts of the mesh you're going to have to use the reduce brush (hotkey 'y'). Try alternating smoothing out the area (shift) and reducing it. The reduce brush is tricky and may appear not to work at first. It helps to zoom in-out and changing angle as well as using full pressure.

  • @jacolobo30
    @jacolobo30 10 років тому

    Oh man!!! I see the 'crease' brush is better than the 'slash' brush of ZBrush. WOw! I love how you relocate the polygons on the mesh.

  • @filwit

    Sculptris exports models as .OBJ only, which is fine, because virtually everything imports that format. No, you can't animate from within Sculptris. I would recommend looking into learning Blender, it's free too, but supports more advanced things like Animation, Rendering, and Composition. In fact, beta versions of the upcoming Blender release also support Sculptris-like sculpting technology. Here's a link where you can get an early build:

    How did you get it so the other object you weren't working became transparent? Like when you did the hair.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  11 років тому

    Hold 'H' and click on the model. You can Hold 'H' and drag-select a portion of the model to hide. Hit 'Ctrl-H' to unhide all. There are commands and ways to do this, but I can't remember off the top of my head. Look at your Sculptris documentation (text file in the Sculptris folder... but might be in your programs list as well).

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    @djxthexmonferno Make sure your pressure settings are working properly and turned up high enough. In Sculptris, the brush pressure is relative to the global scale of the mesh. Try scaling down the mesh (scale brush in global mode) and see if that helps.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    Keep it simple at first. There are tons, upon tons, of free learning resources on the net, but if you try and move to fast you'll be overwhelmed. Stick with just creating stuff in a 3D sculpting application for awhile, then move on to a more complicated modeling/animations software. Once you're ready, I recommend Blender. It's powerful, fast, and free.

    @soundofmetal Blender, no contest. It's free and open source, and it's pretty much as good as Max or Maya. In fact i prefer the interface to both and it has a more logical organization to it's nodes and modifiers as well. There are a few limitations, but nothing you'll run into anytime soon.
    there's lots of good add-ons for it as well, like LuxRender.

  • @lonewolfsinger2k
    @lonewolfsinger2k 11 років тому

    I agree Blender is Open Source. There is a Very Healthy community ready and waiting to help with all you could probably need.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    Thanks! Nice eye for detail.
    The problem with the Draw tool in Sculptris, at early stages, is that, unless you're "flattening" a large area, you have to zoom in quite a bit to "draw" finer shapes. Zooming in adds a bunch of unwanted resolution to the model, so I've had much better luck zooming out a bit and using the Crease tool to "draw" things on the model. Plus, you get sharper details faster this way.
    Also, Inflate is much better for adding/absorbing volume as it's view-angle independent.

  • @filwit
    @filwit  12 років тому

    @art4med Agreed. I'm a big supporter of Open Source, so I hope the best for Blender. Lookup: Unlimited Clay (LiveClay). It's coming to blender after BMesh. With the Skin Modifier (BSpheres), new Remesh modifier, and new sculpting improvements, Blender should be a match for Sculptris/Zbrush. At least in theory. :-)
    Sculptris's triangulated surface isn't really a problem because almost any digital sculpture needs to be retopologized for animation anyways.

      Press H (hold it) and click on a object that you want to hide.
      If you don't want to hide all the object but an area hold H and click&drag (from the background) to the area that you want to hide.
      If you want to unhide everything just click (again while holding H) on the background.
      Mostly works like a mask.

    Well-done. Sculptris is interesting; I hope some of its features find their way into blender: variable subdivision, etc. One thing about exporting sculptris models: they are usually very heavy and all tris/poles. This must be compensated-for in your animation package.

    @PhilipWitte Turned up the pressure sensitivity and tried to draw on a fresh mesh, but it still won't respond. I'm not using a tablet. Like I said, it worked fine the first several times I've used it, and the triangles multiply as if I'm actually changing to mesh, but the form stays the same.

    But, you shouldn't try and animate models directly out of Sculptris. There's to many vertices which will make things run slow, and they might not be in ideal places for joints and blend weights.
    What you have to do is Retopologize your mesh when you're done sculpting. There are lots of different tools to do this. The easiest way i've found is 3D Coat's Auto Retopology feature. Plus I've heard it's fully included in the trial version even after it expires (free).

  • @filwit

  • @plazpastic
    @plazpastic 10 років тому

    I notice you say the three main brushes were grab, crease and inflate. Instead of inflate, it looked like you mainly used "draw." You also say that inflate (inverted I assume) is best for doing hole. And I'm assuming you mean draw there as well. But great video. It answered the big questions I had. Just keep it simple. No special masking tricks necessary. Just keep havcking. Great work.

    • @filwit
      @filwit  10 років тому

      Well every brush has it's use cases, and different software's brushes act slightly different. The Clay (Draw) and Grab brushes are the most essential probably, but Inflate & Crease are very close. With Inflate you can make add large volume quickly, make very smooth surfaces (lightly inflate + smooth), and exaggerate small details. To build a lips for instance, add a mound with either Draw or Inflate, thin line in it with Crease, then lightly Inflate it to exaggerate the mouth line and "fill out" the lips.

    No. The two compliment each other quite nicely and you can't really use your sculptures for games or movies, where animation is required, without tradition box-modeling tools (retopologizing).
    Really, Sculpting just frees artists from some of the technical constraints of box-modeling during creation. It allows you to focus on the shape and color before getting into poly-counts or edge-loops.

    The three main brushes used in this video are Grab, Crease, and Inflate in roughly equal amounts. Grab for moving the shape around. Crease for drawing in details and pushing in sharp lines. Inflate for adding/shrinking volume and exaggerating creases. Also, don't forget Smooth.

    I use Shortcut keys to switch brushes, which is the reason they change so fast.

    I totally want to say two things:
    1) Awesome!
    2) Thank you so much. Thanks to your video I found the Sculptris
    program and I totally love it, it's my first 3D program and i really
    enjoy it, also thanks to this vid i learned how to operate in this
    program.
    I also have one question your 3d is quite complex my is similiar but it has about 30000 triangles more.. am I doing something wrong?
