I found Sculptris about three days ago and have accomplished more in three days than with over a year in Blender. I'm still keeping Blender for rigging and posing, but this is my new go-to for character modeling. One of the things I learned the hard way with Blender was SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! My machine bogs down and even closes with Sculptris in the middle of a ticklish maneuver, but I don't lose everything. You did answer the two things I was having real trouble with: mouth and eyes. Your tutorials are going into both How To Go To and Art Projects. Thanks!
"C is the shortcut for inflate, I wouldn't have picked that." I thought the same thing until I saw the pattern. All of the brush shortcuts are right next to each other on the keyboard. They literally just start with E, and go down/over from there. Not intuitive, but actually pretty handy :)
The fact you did this with a mouse shows how powerful the software is. Great tutorial. You should try a Wacom tablet though, Your artwork will improve no end.
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm really enjoying working with Sculptris! It's easy and accessible and FREE is great!!!! Just one comment...In Sculptris you don't have to add geometry before sculpting; it's automatically dynamic and adds the geometry for you. But, I think this whole series is a great jump start to a great program! Thanks for taking the time and doing a nice, clear tutorial. Cheers!
If you use blender Instead of getting rid of the triangles like he does in the video I'm pretty sure you can do a limited dissolve wile having the object selected and get a much more simpler mesh which should render a lot easier and make it easier to work with.
i been saying wow allot to my self after downloaded sculptris dis-morning , wonder if poly decimation tool work on quads of some my old meshes ,i haven't played with that one yet
I have a question. I have been watching your videos and notice how you turn your sculpture by using the right click button on the mouse. My sculptris program no,longer does this; do you think you might be able to solve the problem? I have done research and have found no results on said problem, and seeing how experienced you are, I can most definitely tell that you are a virtuoso. Would you kindly be of assistance? Thanks and keep up the amazing works!!, Shelby Baugher
Cool, good to know! I'm working on a sculpt of Michael Rennie (Klaatu from the orig. Day the Earth Stood Still.) thanks to your video. Thanks for replying!
You must have the "Global" radio button selected. Or your brush size is huge. But I think it's probably the Global button. Just under the sliders for size and strength when you have the Grab tool selected. or just hit the G key on your keyboard (which might be how you accidentally turned it on).
Hmmm. That sounds like a problem with either your computer's specs not being high enough, or a bad install of the program. Sculptris runs on some pretty old computers, but it is still moving thousands of points around. If you think you have a powerful enough computer, I'd suggest reinstalling Sculptris. If it's a bad download, you may have to download again. But that's unlikely.
I've only had it a little while. It's the Monoprice 12x9. I'm mostly very happy with it. Except I can't seem to get it to work with Zbrush 4R5, even though it works perfectly with 4R4. I think I'll have to update from Vista to something newer. :|
Thanks for watching and the tip. I have found that in some cases I get a much smoother result if I increase the mesh density first. Just adding the details to coarser geometry can cause Sculptris to pull out fairly jagged features and then add triangles to reinforce those jaggies. But I may be doing things wrong. It's good to have another opinion on this and have people watching try it both ways to see what works for them.
Nice tutorial. I do have a question when you were adding the extra geometry did you use any keys + left click to do that. Cant seem to add extra geometry.
Do you have any other software to generate normal or displacement maps? Blender is free too and should be able to handle the task, but I don't know my way around that program. If you ONLY want to use sculptris, find out if CryEngine can generate its own normal or displacement maps if it has a high poly model and a low poly model. I know UDK can do this. Then export your high poly sculptris model, then simplify the model WAY down and export that. The UVs are gonna be tricky. It's not the best.
I have a fairly decent laptop, and downloaded that great software and am itching to use it. However, it is running so slow for me. And I mean very very slow. At one point I though my computer was going to crash. Any ideas why it should be so sluggish. Please help!
My mask tool doesn't seem to be working any more! instead of drawing a mask looks like it's subdividing the triangles into more also, Ctrl+Alt+ leftmouse click doesn't delete the "mask" just adds more. any ideas?
I've had this same problem. You'll want to save your work and reopen the program. I had this problem a few times. I think it something that happens when the program has been up for a long time and you haven't been using it. I have the tendency to just leave programs up on my computer and keep them up for days without messing with them. I have similar problems with open office and a couple other programs. where certain things just stop working or it starts freezing.
+PantheraaX if you click on the grab tool, there will be Global [G] and a Limit [S] buttons unlick global and click Limit, which limits where you're grabbing instead of grabbing the whole sphere

YAY NOWZ I CAN MAKE PENIZEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!! just kidding...i'm trying to make models of creatures that will live in the future,(if the humans disappeared) if we don't somehow go extinct the world will probably just be metal and no other animal other than some fish and animals in captivity......
This might be a little bit late but oh well. No one has the mind to do things like this in the beginning but its something you work at and getter better at faster than you might think. It's like learning to draw, you are not going to be an artist in a day. :)

The main reason why i'm here is because z brush's interface is HELL!..
The first 7 mins of this video changed my life. I say Thank you!
loved your simplistic explanation. Thanks a lot for teaching the basics of sculptris.
you deserve more subs.

I thought the same thing until I saw the pattern. All of the brush shortcuts are right next to each other on the keyboard. They literally just start with E, and go down/over from there. Not intuitive, but actually pretty handy :)
I also think it's because C looks like an inflated bubble, just like V is the shortcut for pinch and it looks like a pinched edge.
Thank you! I never would have noticed that.
Solid Tutorial With Good Explanation On Using The Various Brush Tools. I Also Like How You Go About Explain Your Sculpting Technique
THANKS AMAZING JOB at showing scupltris 10/10 I I will probably check out ur other tutorials too
If you are just looking for the how-to part, go from 4:20
Thank you so much for making these! I'm completely new to this kind of medium, and this is such a great help.
Thanks again!

I have a drawing tablet with 6 hot keys. If you had to pick your 6 most used functions, what would they be?
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm really enjoying working with Sculptris! It's easy and accessible and FREE is great!!!!

Ka pai mate
Really choice got this ole dude something I can understand, thank you so much
Great start for me... Thanks for the first of many views of your Posts
Great tutorial. Thanks.
How do you merge two or more objects into one?
OMG THANKS! Im just starting to use Sculptris and this really is helpful!
If you use blender Instead of getting rid of the triangles like he does in the video I'm pretty sure you can do a limited dissolve wile having the object selected and get a much more simpler mesh which should render a lot easier and make it easier to work with.
man this thing is so much fun. Made an alien fish thing in five minutes.
This is a pretty damn cool piece of software!
i been saying wow allot to my self after downloaded sculptris dis-morning , wonder if poly decimation tool work on quads of some my old meshes ,i haven't played with that one yet

sculpting is so tough
and yet is easier than Zbrush in my opinion
thank you so much for making these tutorials!
@undergroundEducation this is probably necessary now. you may need to turn the levels for your audio pick up to deal with the background fuzz.
Cool, good to know! I'm working on a sculpt of Michael Rennie (Klaatu from the orig. Day the Earth Stood Still.) thanks to your video. Thanks for replying!
Those dislikes are only because some people can't figure it out lol

By "free" do they mean you can use it for commercial stuff without a licence?
You absolutely can. It's free for private and commercial use.
Nice.
+UndergroundEducation Thank you :)
Can you do a robot head like a g1 megatron head? Its a combination robotic face
What is the shortcut for smooth brush if you are using a laptop? Can't left click

What is the purpose of the mask tool? How are masked items effected by it?
Nice tutorial. I do have a question when you were adding the extra geometry did you use any keys + left click to do that. Cant seem to add extra geometry.
just adjust the detail bar (next to the strength/size etc.) and click with grab. Hope I helped :)

Couldn't figure out how to make lips without masks...Thanks for the tutorial!
I cant seem to drag the lip out, any idea what could be preventing this?

I wish I could get this software to work on my PC

how do you pull out the chin? when I use the grab tool it just moves the sphere, when I hold down shift it makes it flat.
+PantheraaX if you click on the grab tool, there will be Global [G] and a Limit [S] buttons unlick global and click Limit, which limits where you're grabbing instead of grabbing the whole sphere
+Megan Williams I already found it ,but thank you :)
nyaa Everytime I click ctrl it pops up the import menu. How do I fix this? I wasn't doing this earlier.
Is good in drawing influence sculpting?😢😢😢😢
Thank you! It was helpful!
How do you keep the brush from freezing every time i try to sculpt it freezes when I move the brush.
Also Im modeling a character for cryengine 3 what can i do to make my model look reallistic the polycount has to be 40,000.
I got it to work thanks.
how do you get the brushes I cant seem to find any somebody please help!
Pressing the Tab key shows and hides the brushes and other controls.
thanks
Okay i have some problems .. how do i freely rotate my object 360 degrees around? And if you use a mac - does i it have really bad graphic?
How are you supposed to make hair?
More triangles
I like this tutorial, but those random moments where the image switches from one side to another can be somewhat confusing. Thanks, though.
Viewers who are following along: In case you're wondering why your sculpture isn't behaving quite like his, be sure that you uncheck "Show symmetry line" in the Options panel.
Can you please tell me the tablet?
Also this tutorial rocks make more please mabe animation for games be cool
You never know how much you have in common with so people.
You should try Daz3d
5:15 Bless you.
sculptris always crashes, thats so annyoing, where is the problem? my computer is fine, 960 4gb, 16gb ram and 4690 i5 should do the job
Maybe you have to much triangles, try to use the reduce brush as frequently as possible :)
it crashes whenever i try to use the grab tool
Try going out of full screen if you're in full screen. I find that sculptris will crash when I use any tool in fullscreen mode
I have a pentium core with 2gb ram with with nvidia gt 610 and it runs . its not the hardware
Mine's completely fine, I have NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 here
how do i zoom in and out
They actually bought Sculptris from someone, and now continuing to develop it
YAY NOWZ I CAN MAKE PENIZEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since this recording I have managed to find a good tablet. Not a Wacom, as I'm a cheapskate/poor student. :D
i am realizing that i REALLY do not have the mind to do this kind of stuff
