I finally found the desk of my dreams for my studio, and it's called DOMinator! Coincidence? Maybe ;)
By the way, I am going to release the track that plays at the beginning soon ;)

I've just watched a 16 min video about a desk... And when it was finished, I wanted more! Glad that no midi packs were used in this video either. As for the desk, my requirements are a bit strange so I have someone building one for me on specs... ...but I'd get the Studio Desk just for the piano luster finish!

0:29 My favorite part of the video. "No MIDI packs were used in the creation of this track." Absolute genius. You would not want any musical theory, that is for wimps, who wants to learn anything when a MIDI pack can "write everything for you." (Please note the sarcasm...😉😜)

Fantastic, congrats Dom! I remember 2 years ago when I came back into the music production world, now being partly hearing impaired on my left ear, I asked you about your view on this, if I could ever be able to do a good job... and man your encouragement was incredible! I am ever so thankful to you for that positivism. Congratulations again, you deserve it! Have a blast mate

@@TheFujac The truth is I use a hearing aid calibrated to give me back some of the frequencies I lost on that ear. That creates a rebalancing for my brain of the stereo imaging. On the more difficult frequencies, mainly low end, I rely most of the times on my right side ear sometimes together with graphic analiser to confirm the frequencies. Gladly I have always had great listening skills, learned to play and sing always by listening. Lots of ear training now (the ususal stuff just like getting used to a new pair of speakers or hdphones)... all works to "recalibrate" the brain" into new challenges 🙌

I looked at a few 0f the StudioDesks but wanted a sit/stand motorized desk. and to be honest, felt they were a bit overpriced for MDF dipped in fibre glass.
With some encouragement from Chris St'Aubyn, I decided to go DIY. I designed and built my own desk with parts from Amazon and Home Depot. Saved about $1800 compared to the basic Studio Desk offering.

    Nice desk.
However, I have tested the both worlds of having a midi keyborad on a tray and directly on the desk and I'd say I prefer the latter probably because I spend most of my time producing.
Having to move the midi keyboard back and forth isn't particularly the best as you spend more time with the keyboard and mouse so it's much better to have them coloser to you than the midi controller... Stretching to reach the keyboard and mouse during production is a pain in the butt

    Three things:
    1. Quality of light system installation is very, very cheap, based on adhesive tape...
    2. The Screen is ABSOLUTELY to high position for working many hours, even after lowering the screen.
    3. Dom, on your desk no place for ... thinking :):):)... Of course, I'm joking.
Anyway, design of StudioDesk products is good. But quality of elements should be much, much better. I am interested to see this DOMINATOR after 10 years...
CONGRATULATIONS, DOM. I think, nobody could advertise a StudioDesk product better.

In spite of the gorgeousness of the DOMinator desk itself, the lovely lights and the breath-taking aspirational gear postioned perfectly on it, ultimately it is a well-thought out workspace which will grow as you incorporate additional gear and give you a comfortable environment to spend hours doing what you love. If a desk can be considered both practical and sexy, the DOMinator desk certainly is just that!
Enjoy it Dom! (And yes, I want one!) 😍

It's really difficult to find sturdy studio furniture. I built my desktop with wood I got from the local hardware store. The laminate tops are fragile. After only a year of use it will look like it needs to be replaced. You can't be totally gentle with it as your working.

Great review, I just order mine a hour ago. I will have to assemble it alone. I also have a Cranborne 500R8 I guess i will put it in the same location that you are using. I will use my MODX 88 for my controller. Currently i am using a Keylab mk II 61 which I like very much. I am using a 4K 55'' Sony tv for my main monitor, with two 32'' monitors I will have to come up with a layout that will work. Next step is to disconnect all my gear and move it out of my Room and then build the dominator in place, Oh lord! This is a mix of excitement and dread I have never had all my gear disconnected. I will sent a picture of my studio. Thanks

Fantastic desk and fantastic studio (oh and loved the music too). However I am halfway through the video and I just can’t hold myself on asking why so much excitement for a sturdy 88key keyboard tray? Isn’t that pretty standard on most high-end music desk including others from Studio Desk itself? Unless there is something more I am missing out on.

The harder one works, the more hours spent, the more important the environment. Years ago, I had the good fortune of constant overlapping fantasy projects and took advantage of the income stream to build my dream Artisan Mobile, which supported my career as a live specialist and gave me more post-production work than I could handle. I’ve recently moved home and plan to do it again in a fixed space. This plan brought me here to see your experience. Much of my construction in the Mobile was self-designed and built but I had a great control room already, built by John Archer Design. At home it will be all new and I go into this with no small amount of trepidation.

Thank you Dom for this video. I am in a similar kind of setup. The only thing is that I never found a good place for my 88 piano master keyboard. I tried to use a stand and move it partially under the desk. But for that I really have to sit low when playing. Then my arms and shoulder hurt when using my gear further away on the desk. I noticed you sit quite high on your chair. How does that working position affect arms, shoulders, etc. Otherwise, this DOMinator desk really looks like a good upgrade. 😎

My wrists hurt just watching this. I can't do keyboard-underneath setups. Having the keyboard underneath causes me to have to raise the main typing surface to an uncomfortable level for my hands/forearms. Since I do a lot of computer work that doesn't involve having my MIDI keyboard out, I can't justify the awkwardness, so I keep my MIDI keyboard on the desk surface just beyond my typing keyboard. This also helps while arranging in notation programs, because I'm mostly using my mouse and keyboard to navigate/use shortcuts/etc, and using my keyboard to tap in notes. If was ONLY using a DAW all day every day, then I'd maybe consider a keyboard-underneath desk.

I have just finish my alone assembly of the studio desk dominator. It was a handful mostly because of the poor tolerance, example if you have a half inch peg going into a predrilled hole you make the hole five eights not half inch. these numbers are a example to let future customers understand. this was the issue thru out the entire build. I had to use Vaseline and a very large hammer. The video studio desk shows as a assembly tutorial is fiction. These boys, i am sure predrilled before filming
nothing fit the way the film shows. A side note They only use semi trucks to deliver to homes ( it's cheaper for them) unfortunately I live in a cul-de-sac so they drop my shipment 400 pounds off about a football size field away from my place
Lucky I have a dolly, Lol All in all I do like this size of a desk.

It looks great, but unfortunately for me with my glasses (started needing them as I got older) the screen has to be approx 60cm away - shame as this desk is great and a step up from my Zoar desk - though on the Zoar desk I can have my screen at 60cm.

Nope, it's another fail cause it can't fit two large screens sidfe by side. I would have 3 screens if I could (and actually, you having a smaller second on on the side has given me an idea for my spare 24" LG ultrafine, I will put that there and have 3 screens that way), but after weeks of searching I only found one desk (with custom changes) that can at least handle 2 large monitor screens and my Adam A5x speakers on each side also as well as my Adam subwoofer on the bottom shelf. Why all these studio desk manufacturers think we ALL use only one screen is beyond me.
I simply don't understand how you can work with only one main screen in front of you. But to each their own.
I want one for PT arrange page (or Nuendo's), one for DAW Mixer, and one permanently for Apollo Mixer which I can use a switch for to gobetween that and the second little mini PC slave synth (main computer is a Mac Studio).
Mine is a quarter of the price, custom built and just as high quality, and also has a massive bottom shelf that runs along the full length of the back and sides of the desk. Mac on one side, UPS on the other, and all my UAD satellites and midi interfaces on the back shelf as I don't need to touch those things once set up.
Then I have 1.8 metres wide desktop and nearly 1 metre depth, then a 1 foot depth shelf that runs along the entire desk that is also 1.8 metres wide and can hold 2 screens and my speakers all on the one shelf. The only thing, the only thing that I think yours is better for is that I believe it has more rack space, where as I will only have 2x4U so 8U total. Enough for my 3 Apollo 8 and Adats and my Integra though.
So he's also making me a custom rack shelf that will sit on the side, giving me another 49 cm of desktop width and same depth as main desk, and 18 rack spaces underneath. All for 1700 AUD delivered and painted in top quality white paint. That's 1100 USD vs over 4 thousand USD for these desks.
    Rip off and then some.
EDIT, no, I have double the rack space built on the main part of the desk also. Better in every way.

    • @teddym2808
      @teddym2808 5 місяців тому

Yep, just checked, yours is 1540 mm wide or 1.54 metres and mine is 1.8.

SSL UF8 review please 😊. Having the CC121 I was wondering if the SSL was worth investing for Cubase. Already have UC1. Thanks

Hi Dom, I'm thinking about buying this desk, but I wonder if there is enough space under the desk when I just want to sit and mix without playing the piano. How many space is there for the legs. I mean how many centimeters can the keyboard stand go under the desk measured from the edge of the above plate? (I hope you understand what i mean). Btw: I like your channel!

I had a similar concern, and while the website of the manufacturer is excellent, I opted for the Enterprise Electric Set, which allows you to adjust the height at will electrically with the press of a button. Highly recommended.

For $3000 one can get a custom made desk. Obviously this furniture is high quality, but unless one has money to burn, there are much more budget friendly alternatives.

Hey James! I don't know if the situation is different in the US but here in Europe, creating a custom desk with these specs would cost way more than $3000. And I wouldn't be able to guarantee the quality- custom desks are pretty much "as is" no room for evaluating them and nobody else has tried them. Now, if you had the craftmanship skills and tools I am sure you can build a killer desk- but for something that is going to carry so much gear that's heavy and expensive, I would research a LOT before making a choice. Just my humble opinion from somebody who has used at least 8 studio desks.

Great video, but what nobody tells you about these desks is they’re terrible for synthesizers. You cannot put a good synthesizer in pull out tray, because the keyboard tray does not pull out far enough for you to get to any of the knobs.or see what you’re doing

I can see all the knobs on my synths just fine on this one. You can remove it completely from the desk. It’s a standalone stand :)
