Yep, fabulous explanation, which has changed my workflow completely as up to now I have always saved a new version of the project and then rendered all the MIDI tracks and then deleted them. Disabling and hiding them is SO MUCH better and enables me to easily go back a stage if necessary, instead of messing about importing from previous projects etc. Thanks for that .... every day is a school day! x
Thanks Dom, I am still a learner of this amazing program but I find your videos to be the best resource on UA-cam for it, thanks for all your guidance.
Actually you ve just helped me solved another problem . Which i had about plug ins usage: DSP resources reached so some plug ins are disabled... Now i have a solution to that thanks!
Nice hoodie man, one of my fave movies 👍 Wore the tshirt/shorts combo as breakfast gear throughout a recent stay in Cancún which brought some smiles to peoples faces. But now the vacation is over, back to freezing and bouncing tracks 😊. Thanks for the video, cheers // Wince
Anyway we can get a video on computer specs for music production, video editing, & graphic designs. To run flawlessly without having to use these. Because of the cpu power today. For in the box users at least.
Hey Dom, great video as always. To separate the mixing process from creation I tend to bounce my midi to audio, delete the midi channels and save it as a separate project. Saves a lot on loading times, especially if you have tonnes of sample based instruments. Each to their own workflow though ;)
Hi Adrian, good shout. I do the same too. I may have C11 running on a Core i7 but it still struggles at times to play all my tracks. That way you can always go back and retrieve tracks if you're later unhappy with them and need to tweak and import them as a stem. I also export and import stems from older versions of 32 bit Cubase and it was never much fun when the CPU on those older machines started to stutter. Perhaps it's the experience of using older tech and old versions of Cubase that has led to my cautious approach/workflow?
Yeah Adrian my process too. I have a 4 file project template, tracking, arranging, mixing and mastering. Helps me focus on the job at hand and reminds me not to get hung up on mixing when I’m arranging etc. I’ve always exported audio I didn’t know about render in place. That will be a massive time saver, so thanks Dom
@@madmac66 it’s also a good process for archiving material. What happens if the vst you used to create the track is no longer available or doesn’t work with a version of Cubase. I learnt the hard way a long time ago.
Freeze was in Cubase SX3 in 2004 or the next update of SX3 from there. I was definitely a bit confused about how to properly use bounce and render in place so thank you for the demystification.😎
I needed this tutorial last Monday. I had so much variaudio and freeware on the many many vocal takes that I couldn't get a mix down without CPU overload. I bounced the tracks, and then the audio mix down worked. Learning the hard way!
I got the crossgrade to Nuendo 12 and I feel so happy that I decided to make the (progressive) transition to it, cuz Steinberg really puts in the effort. To be perfect, all they need to do is to address the sloppy Clip Gain automation (make it like in Studio One). After that, I would have nothing else to ask for. And Thanks, Dom, you are the GOAT in teaching Cubase 💙
Great reminder, I've been using freeze functionality since 2005 in my Steinberg DAW. I love the passion you have for mixing and production. Thanks for reminding me of my why Dom!
RENDER IS SUPERB!!! Makes my job smoother as an Engineer And keeps the vocals sounding clean with only 2.3 ms of latency in and out! When working with VST instruments is the main reason for using this feature as well as getting your mix ready to send stems to a mastering studio if needed! All At 96k! Wowzer! Thanx Dom!
Hey Dom, very interesting topic. In my own practice, I freeze instruments tracks when I need to save some RAM, knowing that I'll modify them later. I'm doing Render in place when I know my MIDI content is definitive, and to save some time while freezing the tracks - as more the track is long, the more MIDI message it got, the longer it takes to freeze ! But anyway, you'll know better. I'll watch !
Great comment. The video did an excellent job of describing what each feature does, but it was not completely clear on when one is better than the other. But rendering tracks in place before freezing them seems like it would save RAM as well as make freezing faster. It had not occurred to me that these tools were meant to be, or could be, used in conjuction.
@@MrTomservo85Don't see the point of freezing after rendering. You can always go back to the original track, even if you later disabled it as Dom suggested.
Thanks Dom for all your videos, great tips and inspiration! Just an info regarding FREEZE...cubase 12 always crashes when you try to freeze an instrument track. When you SOLO the track before freezing all works fine
THANKS! I didn't know about any of these things... and for me render in place is going to be in constant use. I used to route what I wanted to an audio track and record it that way. Doing that works just like render in place but obviously it takes more time and thought to get it right.
One thing I’ve noticed is that freeze does NOT work for post-fader inserts. If you have high-resource inserts, move them to pre-fader to save CPU when frozen. Great video, I have come back to it several times!
Great video Dom. I knew about all these methods but didn't really understand the pro and con of each option and this really helped. To be honest most of the time I think Render in Place will be the right option.
Excellent explanation and tutorial. I can see now that freezing the tracks has become a bit redundant, thanks to Cubases rendering options. This information will come in very handy when I begin adding Vox to my VSTi tracks.... Saving CPU and Ram may become crucial in my workflow....Thank You Dom.
THIS, is what I've been looking for!. I finally hit my CPU wall with a new strings VST. I always knew about the export function which has been around since, the beginning of time, time being the key word!........but render is going to save me so much time me right now!! Grazie Dom! :-)
I upgraded from Elements to Artist recently for two main reasons (1) Getting Padshop & Retrolouge. (2) Render in Place - not just for the saving in CPU but the creative control a audio file gives you.
Bounce selection also comes in handy when you use multiple copies of a file in the track, and you only want to manipulate one of them with ARA modules, direct processing etc. If you don't bounce a unique version, you are in for a world of pain understanding what's going on.
I love how Cubase now has Render In Place (or RIP Export/Import tracks). I have Cubase 11 but also have PCs running 32 bit plugins on Cubase SX3, 4 & 5 which won't work on 64 bit C11, so I know how time consuming Exporting and Importing tracks can be when using those versions and when I want to pull tracks together into C11. TBH I still don't like either the colour or the look of the new screens on C11 (and probably won't like C12 if I upgrade) but you can't argue with the features that C11 has in comparison to the earlier versions of Cubase. As always Dom, another great tutorial, thank you.
Hey Dom, I found another way to render in place a hole track and disabled it without doing it manually, just by selecting the track without selecting any midi event or audio event going to render settings you'll find that you can render the track, disable the source track and there's a checkbox to hide it. After doing that it will automatically render the track disable it and hide it at ounce and this is a time saver! Really cubase is the #1 daw Thank you for you video Dom❤️
As always, I do feel, that I've learn something useful. I've been using those features for a while , but detail explanations of your part, make the whole process make sense in my head. I see the broad picture, if you know what I mean. Love your tutoriel, it's always fun, to the point, with full explanation....like rendering in place with Complete Path and Master Effects..
Splendid video Dom - and splendid shirt!! Come see me in Vegas sometime. Also - - yes, a MIDI Chord pack ad ran in the middle and it didn't hurt me one bit. If these folks pay money to keep your bills paid so you can keep giving this stuff, - -well - there's way worse things on the internet than MID chord packs, eh?
Great video as always, thanks! Can't believe how much I've learned from your videos over the years. Quick question concerning the bounce selection feature: wouldn't "audio --> events to part" do the same thing in the example of the vocal chops?
Hello Dom, as always thank you so much for the video. Could you please do a video about dither and why is it so important when mastering? And could you also talk about the diference between mastering with 44100 sample rate and 48000 and also the bit depth 16 or 24? And the diference between mastering for streaming services and CD? It would be so cool if you could make a video about this because there’s not much about this on UA-cam. Thank you so much! Love all of your videos!
Wow, I learn't a lot in this video I tell yah... The duplicate version on a track I never knew existed until now. Many thanks. Bounce Selection reasons, also, great reasons given for doing so.
Great tip Dom. Been using render in place for a while now but didnt know about disabling the track and hiding it. That's great advise. Same goes with bounce, was never really sure about that, but you've cleared all that up now. Thanks for the tip. :-)
The other advantage of freeze is that you can select *multiple* tracks and leave them all to render in place while you make a fresh coffee! That was a really good addition in later Cubase iterations (although I never select unload instrument as every now and again it crashes Cubase - particularly with VPS Avenger for some reason...)
I'm happy I found this video, my older laptop is having a hard time with CPU. I currently have a mix I'm working on and I can't export because it just crashes. So I went to use render in place outboard gear tracks to try and save some CPU and unfortunately I'm having the same issue. Now I don't know what to do 🤔☹️. I guess for now on I'll commit to R.I.P faster.
It would be interesting and practical to have in the rendering options on the spot, the choice to integrate or not the auxiliaries independently in each situation. In dry or through the groups or also through the master bus. in each situation the choice to put them or not.
I do almost like you Dom when I deactivate tracks after rendering them, but then I file them all in a folder that I call backup. It's convenient to find everything in the same place afterwards.
Great vid Dom... when using analog inserts (with render in place) 1) can you choose just to render the analog insert and not plug ins? 2) How does the delay compensation work? How do you it setup so the delay through the conversion and gear back to Cubase is compensated for? Thanks 🙏
Really cool and interesting video as usually, Dom! Thank you! Since I got sound design lessons in online school I only use render in place. I almost never use freeze. And I didn't even know about bounce function))
Thank you for the tips Dom, I have been using these functions as a regular part of my work flow. The one answer that I can never find is how to render let’s say a midi kick drum to mono instead of stereo. The only other solution that I’ve found is to solo track, export and insert audio as file in current project. Being able to render as mono in place would expedite things so much more. Thanx
After the RIP (Render In Place) you can use DOP (Direct Offline Processing) to convert your stereo file to mono. Unless you need a file with only just one channel, this works good. You can even set up a macro to do them both.
Could you make videos for what makes each genre just that type of genre? Sounds, instruments, scales, chords, beat, maybe voice, etc. What they are that stands out with just that kind of genre from others. I think many would have liked to see it and then maybe get better at the kind of music they like.
Hey Dom. Thanks for the video. Funny how I literally experimiented with these functions this past week. Great tip on keeping a duplicate version before bouncing. Two questions not related: 1. Regarding A/B referencing in Control Room: Is there a way to route or connect the reference track (cue mix) to the master meter? I always have to use the Supervision level meter to A/B compare the peak and RMS of my mix with the reference mix. The master meter only reflects the readings for the mix, even when you switch to the cue. 2. Have you ever considered doing a course for Cubase? I think your knowledge is invaluable, particularly when it comes to electronic music production. Many ppl still think Cubase is this dinosaur that's outdated. Of course that's only because it's not easy to crack so it's not everyone who has it like some other DAWs that will remain namelesss - let's just say I like all kinds of "fruit" but I mainly use Cubase from start to finish in my production. I'd buy your course in a second!
Well, I will not buy a plugin for years anymore! I have to many I still have to learn inside out, and that's going to take a long time. Thanks for the eye opener! B.t.w. I don't blame plugin manufacturers, I know I have a lot to learn!
Render in place (not specifying a name but asking it to use the existing name on a locked track) does not work in Cubase 12.0.70 My rendered track is named "Stereo Out (R)" under that circumstance which is clearly a bug in Cubase.
Well done my friend. Can we presume then that rendering in place the complete path through to the master effects of our events selection would be the ideal way of exporting stems as well? I’m saying this because we all know of the pitfalls of exporting stems that they nearly always end up not summing up to the original level of the original track but much higher? Shouldn’t “render in place” with rendering all the path completely solve this problem? Would love your opinion on this.
+1 to this. In fact, does the complete path including master effects such as master buss compression allow for the rest of the arrangement to be playing (so things will compress against each other) or is it similar to printing the audio as a mixdown with that track in solo?
I confess I was confused about this, I don't know if anyone else was - so I did a little test. And it turns out that rather as I suspected, that rendering in place with the complete path will definitely NOT produce stems that when all played together will make a correct sounding mix. Rendering like this has the effect of printing the audio with all effects in the chain yes, but not making any allowance for any other tracks to be playing, just as if you'd done a mixdown with that track in solo. So the compression you'd get from a compressor on the stereo buss that glues a mix together while all tracks are playing simply doesn't happen when rendering audio like this, it just compresses the solo'd track. It's not a biggie, and probably what would be termed "expected behaviour" but I just thought I'd share my experiment as this is definitely NOT the way to print stems to make a full mix from. In case anyone else was in doubt as I was.
Awesome. A slightly deeper question about how Cubase handles the whole signal path option in render in place.... Let's say there complicated processing on the master bus, where the channel(s) or events that you're rendering are interacting in some way with the entire mix.... Like with some sort of dynamic EQ plugin or similar processing.... Does it take all of the other channels into account while rendering your selection, or does it just render the path on its own, excluding any other signals from the other channels/buses that might also be contributing in the mix to the master bus processing? Thanks
Hi, when i want to freeze i don't have choise between Freeze Instruments Only and Freeze Instrument and Channels or Unload Instrument When Frozen. I can set tail size only. Is it possible to fix it?
Heart-felt suggestion for Steinberg: implement Dom's BOOM! as a confirmation sound each time a command is successfully completed, please! ;)
Hiding the original un-processed tracks in the mixer is a brilliant idea. I never thought of that before. Keep everything in your workflow clean!

Merci, very useful.
Very useful! 😁💪🎼
