Toedscool wasn't as arbitrary as you made it seem. They're based on wood ear mushroom. Its thin, wrinkly, doming shape and smushy texture brings to mind not only ears, but the bell of a jellyfish. The japanese word for this fungus is even kikurage, or "tree jellyfish"
yeah... people just dont study to make this videos
Yeah for real. Sounds so bitter and spiteful talking about it
This
@@raulmacielmachado600 At least Lockstin does
Honestly, I just love the Toedscool line, they're so fun and unique, and look more like there inspiration, Mushrooms, Then the Tentacool line ever looked like jellyfish.
I like how you choice a false-mantis line to make a different take on a false-mantis.
I know it's so funny
Mantis shrimp are my favorite animals and fomantis is my favorite pokemon, so this was match made is heaven.
I also really like Lurantis line and mantis shrimps!
@@lirachonyr Yeah both kinds of mantis shrimps are so cool! Especially the spear fishers. It's crazy the way they hunt
Mantis shrimps are my absolute favourite creatures on earth. Very much appreciate the representation
@@abrarkadabrar7829 yeah their awesome! It's crazy they even exist!
convergent convergent mon 🤯
I really love that Toescool is basically “take a silhouette and reinterpret parts of that silhouette”. I think you did that really well with parasect going from big claws to fins
I think that a convergent Pokémon has to change something that is an integral? Essential? Part of its biology? Bodyplan? if that makes sense. Like wiglett changing its body shape to look more wug-like or toedscool becoming bipedal. Easiest way to do this is by making a land dwelling Pokémon a sea creature and vice versa which is exactly what happened with the official convergents and your Fanmade ones lmao
I think wiglett itself is fine, but would be cool if wugtrio was more eel like, maybe it could actually swim in the air like most fish pokemon, or maybe it could be a coiled up eel with three heads.
Yeah no. That sounds dumb and creatively limiting
I think a sea serpent hydra sort of thing would look pretty cool. I like wugtrio anyway tho
@@Antiling_the_Squidkidits just a suggestion not a hard rule
While the games never officially refer to them as Convergent, one of Wiglett's dex entries pretty much describes convergent evolution:
"Though it looks like Diglett, Wiglett is an entirely different species. The resemblance seems to be a coincidental result of environmental adaptation."
I think the general idea is still "they have similar niches so they evolve to have a somewhat similar body" (in this case Wig and Dig being mons that spend most of their time underground), but taking a lot more creative liberty than irl
The squinting reminds of the Gen 5 starter silhouettes and everyone making art of what it could be
Carnigulp looks so sick! And the ballooning mouth concept would be so cool to see ingame.
it literally looks like an official pokemon
no like... I know it looks like carnivine which is already official, but what I meant it that it looks like it would work well in a pokemon game.
@@jackepicspeederwolfaj2294 Yeah it looks like huntail
@@paulbunions8580 that’s not exactly what I meant
I feel like, out of all of them, Carnigulp was your most successful design, due to it largely retaining Carnivine's proportions and body plan. I absolutely ADORE Lurantis, and your mantis shrimp concept for Lurprawn is incredible, but I feel like the change to it's lower half is too drastic for it to register as a convergent Pokémon. the same goes for the Terasect line; the proportions are too different from their original versions that they just feel "off" when presented as a convergent mon. All together though, I really like the direction you went with this and I am really excited for more. Definitely subscribing after this.
I love Carnigulp because it also looks like it's clearly related to Huntail
I think the Parasect one works really well especially how it takes inspiration from the mushroom affecting Parasect's brain and taking a different spin on it with the barnacles affecting the health of turtles. Though I have to agree with Lurprawn I love Lurantis and mantis shrimp but the merging designs feels too much like a skylander swap force concept of a mantis stuck onto a mantis shrimp's body and breaks away too much from the silhouette explanation they were talking about earlier in the video. Overall a great explanation of convergent pokemon and the other concept designs turned out great
@Just some wheel I like the concept of terasect's line itself, and for what it's worth, I do actually like teras' design itself. It's just that terasect stays too far from parasect's shape language too much that they don't really read as being connected in any way except name. If terasect was changed to match parasect's silhouette more, I think it would work as a much more successful design.
(P.S. props for the skylanders reference.)
To be fair to toedscool and toedscruel, a jellyfish's bell does have a pretty comparable silhouette to a mushroom's cap. Plus, there's the pun of "jelly" ear, a possible inspiration for toedscool, so I can kind of see where the designer was going with it. As for wiglett and wugtrio, I figure the idea for them came about when someone saw a bunch of garden eels in their little burrows and was reminded of dugtrio.
Your convergent 'mons are so cute and awesome, I love them! I wonder if it can be done in reverse and have aquatic pokémon based on their inspirations' terrestrial namesakes. Like a horsea lookalike that looked like an actual horse, or a grass-type pyukumuku lookalike that looked like an actual cucumber. Might be fun to try to pull off.
Horsy, Sydra and Flingdra with the normal type and becoming normal fighting in final stage
Pyukukumbr, Grass type
I literally just came up with a convergent pokemon called Skinkaton, which is basically a lizard which carries around a large cooking pot that it uses to carry cooking supplies, all fashioned from clay. It does this so it could, well, cook for both themselves and other pokemon. Since it has tendency to lick its spoons clean (their saliva has similar properties to soapy water), their brightly colored tongues sometimes hang out of the corners of their mouths.
Though it’s a convergent form of Tinkaton, it’s more closely related to Lickilicky and is a ground/fire type.
Skinkaskink, Skinkastuff, and Skinkaton
I made a convergent Fakemon of Snom and Frostmoth. There convergent forms are Honduran White Bats. There names so far are Bom and Hondmoth, probably will change, and I originally made it as an experimental way to test out convergent pokemon, but I turned into me adding it to my region.
mind posting the image link?
I'd love to see them!

That's the best I have for an image link.
Since Toedscool and it's evolution's legs/tentacles are actually mycelium, I believe that they used to be rooted in the ground but likely evolved to use the mycelium stalks to move and grab things which just so happened to cause them to function similarly to tentacles over time, and if you look closely at Toedscool and toedscruel, there are clear visual differences between them and their supposed look alikes like the shape of their heads, and the way their mycelium tentacles dont have the little lines at the tips
These convergent mons are genius!
That mimikyu drawn in your style is really cute and I love it
I just got into fakemon making and your video is the highlight of my day :)
I loved every single one of the convergent pokemon you've made in this video, i hope you keep making good stuff! 👍
Yes yes I love that you gave my girl Lurantis convergent evolution and I love ❤️ it 7:04
I know it's primarily a reference to convergent evolution with convergent Pokemon, but i also think it is a reference to old RPGs especially Dragon Quest using palette swaps to increase their number of monsters as cartridge space back in the day was very limited. Convergent Pokemon have more design work done however as they have to be marketable.
Excellent! You've found a great way to teach people convergent evolution ^^
Easy to follow and understand, good examples and with the added bonus of "go out and create your own convergent pokemon", thus practicing the new learned knowledge until it becomes second nature. This is some good education. I'm quite impressed.
I think that keeping the number of convergent pokemon low was pretty intentional; you can't have TOO many of 'em occupying the dex, I think. I definitely anticipate there being a lot more of them in the future, though.
Your garnered philosophy of "just kinda squint a little" is pretty apt, too.
Also I love Carnigulp!
I’m so happy I stumbled across your channel. I love how it incorporates art, character design, animal biology, and science. So cool! And your convergent Pokémon designs were great! Thanks for showing your thought process.
omg i LOVE your takes on the paras/parasect convergent-mons!! turtles are one of my favorite animal, especially sea turtles, and i think your designs and naming for teras and terasect are just perfect
Mantis Shrimp are something I was *obsessed* with in middle school, the convergent design is super cool and I can't wait to see the one for your own region!
Dude, Lurprawn looks awesome! All of them look cool and have interesting designs, but Lurprawn is easily my favourite. Keep up the good work!
0:30 I love the use of the Super Auto Pets sprites here. Love that game!
THE FIRST TIME ANYONE HAS CARED ABOUT LURANTIS IN YEARS LETS GOOOOO
Fun fact: A wug is an actual term regarding a creature with worm like creatures
I think Carnigulp is my favorite, you can clearly see carnivine but it’s just different enough and you can clearly tell it’s not a fly trap.
Love your enthusiasm and these designs are so cool! Keep it up
To be fair, gen 5 does have a lot of convergent mon in a more traditional sense. Like Sawk and Troh with Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, Woobat and Zubat or Geodude and Roggenrola. Granted a lot of those could be because of a common ancestor but it might not be necessarily, specially knowing that types can be evolved relatively quickly as regional variant show.
I kinda disagree.... Woobat , roggenrola, since multiple sub groups of there species exist. It's like saying noibat and noivern and newer who share common theme is convergent... Which isn't completely true
nah, thats called copying Gen 1 or trying too hard to be like Gen 1
Lurprawn is shrimply perfect!
Pikachu Clones kinda feel like convergent evolutions being all rodents with electrical cheek sacks
And Alolamola

"What is a wug anyways?"
In folk taxonomy, a creature with wormlike or insectlike features (essentially a portmanteau of "worm" and "bug"), so since they're wormlike I guess it fits.
Dude I’ve watched u go from 8k to now 20K!!!! Dude congrats I’ve watched all of ur vids and hope to keep lovin it
This is really cool, I love Carnigulp and I think it's a perfect balance between source material and new.
Very Cool Vid Dude, and I Dig your Convergent Pokémon, they look really Cool!, I really like the Lurprawn line the Most
I love carnigulp. You just took my favorite Pokémon, turned it into a fish and slapped an awesome colour scheme onto it. 11/10
These were all really creative and well done.
Let's gooo Aussie artist recognition!
I know that guy and i even joined that challenge! Your idea is so cool!
Great work as always!!!!
I actually imagined a convergent pokemon of Lurantis becoming a mantis shrimp! glad to see someone had the same idea as me!
Dude I love the Gulper eel!!! Great job!
I feel you over-simplified the concept. Ofc the point of these convergent mon are to reference older designs, BUT they’re more than just a Pokémon with the mask of an older mon, since I feel it’s more like finding a different yet similar concept to fit into an old baking tray.
I like the idea of the name carnibrine instead of carnigulp since the convergent mons have a weird naming trend going on
one thing i noticed about convergent pokemon is that they are supposed to be opposites of what they are based of, like tentacool is an jellyfish that lives in the ocean while toedscool is a walking mushroom that lives on land, same thing happends with thw wiglett line.
Teras is soooo cute! And Lurprawn is probably one of the coolest Fakemon I've ever seen... the colors are amazing!
I personally love your Carnigulp design, my personal opinion about these convergent species is that I like them a lot, but a part of me rejects them if they are not justified by the phenomenon of evolutionary convergence in real life, and the design inspired by carnivine is for me a 10/10
Just wanted to mention that the thumbnail is awesome. That toxic yellow and black is the best aesthetic ever.
Hoping one day for a convergent Crobat that's actually a bug!
I’ve always believed that toadscruel and tenticruel look similar is so they both can use tendrils to wrap around pray.
these are so cool! I especially love the mantis shrimp lurantis. i also love the concept of an entirely oceanic region. Also the idea of convergent pokemon is so interesting that I thought about making a tube worm convergent numel line
Wormel and Wormerupt, Water Rock
Love the concept of Terrasect!! But it should be Bug/Dragon!! Turtles are reptiles (dragon) and barnacles could be considered a type of insect or ‘bug’ / parasite. It would be a never before seen concept of a dragon/bug type.
I see there only being two lines of both Convergent and RF 'mons as Game Freak attempting to push back against the community's increasing hyper-focus on Variants and overcompensating in the process.
Love your work
Love these designs GJ
One convergent pokemon idea I had is a Grass type Lampent and Chandelure based off of plant bulbs, vines and hanging planters, one detail about both Wiglett and Toedscool is that both of them have the same number of types and opposing types to their counterparts, Wiglett is a pure water type and water is strong against ground, Toedscool is grass/ground and grass is strong against water and ground is strong against poison so the individual types of the convergent species are in some way opposite to the original's, so my hypothetical Lamplant and Chandefleur would be grass/poison type as grass is resisted by fire and poison is resisted by ghost, also there's no Litwick counterpart because they're not related hence there is no "Litwick" and it's a 2 stage pokemon that resembles a 3 stage pokemon's 2nd and 3rd stages
We already technically have examples of convergent evolution more similar to real life in Pokemon. The bat and bird Pokemon for example. Another one would be ocean mammals like Wailord and Palafin with Sharpedo and other fish. Obviously this is Pokemon and evolution does not work the same as real life so Game Freak could literally just say Zubat and Pidgey share a common ancestor somehow lol
The definition of wug is “a creature with worm or insect features”
teras makes me wanna cry. it's the cutest thing i've ever seen
Carnigulp is goated with the sauce. As a huge carnivine fan I approve.
I love Lurantis and so seeing Lurprawn got me so excited! It looks so good!
Carnigulp has to exist that looked so cool
600th like! Your Fakemon designs are very good
The introduction of covergent pokemon is a neat concept and your designs are amazing. Some may call it unoriginal, but that's how nature can be with the aformentioned comparisons to dolphins and sharks.
I require foprawn now, safely surrender your foprawn, NOW.
Ah, i just assumed that these poke were just the original pokemon that evolved into a new species over time.
Like Diglett was on the island and slowly evolved into a wiglett, or that both evolved from an older common ancestor.
I think it's a cool idea, especially if it's used to redesign weaker pokemon and give them stat buffs. Region variance had some issues as they had to keep the original stats the old pokemon had and made Pokedex entries more complicated.
Great Video 👋 Obviously Don't Wanna Say Your Designs Are Bad By Any Means But This Kind Of Showcases The Main Issue With Making Convergent Species. Most Of The Time It's Either "Take X Water Pokemon And Put It On Land" Or "Take X Land Pokemon And Put It In Water"
Again, No Hate. I Like Your Designs 👍
You know those swimming pool toys, the ones you through into the pool with the weight and “tails”, reminds me of carnigulp
Parasect is one of my absolutely favourite Pokemons and i have enjoyed your convergent form of it :)
I wonder if Lurprawn has a common ancestor with crabrawler :)
I enjoy that lurantis looks less like a flower than lurprawn looks like a mantis shrimp, It feels fitting
"If you wanted to make a convergent mon, where would you start?"
"At Aspen Dental..."
2:38 Uh... Actually a lot of fungus have sacks like that. Or at least parts of them that look like sacks.
In fact it's a very natural convergence that genuinely has some real world analogs.
In fact I'd go so far as to say Toedscruel looks more like something from our world than Tentacruel.
Just something to note for the future; this wasn't "random" like you think, there was very clear and deliberate reason for Toedscruel. Honestly far more then Wugtrio.
I freaking love the carnivine one 🤣😆, I want that to be real soooooo bad. I loved csrnivine, so any love is appreciated. Same for paras line (Though, all are SUPER COOL)
A wug is a term in folk taxonomy, meaning a creature with worm or insect features
carnigulp is an awesome concept fakemon, love it!
I did have a few ideas for convergents, such as Tangela and Tangrowth becoming sea sponges named Spongela and Spongrowth or Qwilfish and Overqwil becoming silver fish named Qwilverfish and Overqwilver (other insect types might suit it better, but the pun was too good to pass up). Also, Togepi sort of resembles a budding flower, so I thought Tulepi, Tuletic, and Tulekiss could work pretty well.
This was really cool!
I agree
The idea of convergent Pokemon is great!
If I had to design one, I'd come up with a Voltorb which looks like a sea mine.
Joltorb and Elexplode, Water or Steel type 😊
a turtle? I was FULLY expecting a spider for an oceanic region still cool either way
Your art in super auto battlemon is awesome! Good job!
For Parasect I was thinking like a dome or reef that serves as a home for fish pokemon
Convergent evolution is no coincidence when it comes to dolphins, sharks, ichthyosaurs, aquatic crocodylomorphs, and tuna. These creatures needed to have good hydrodynamics if they were to compete as top predators in an ocean ecosystem so over time mathematically more hydrodynamic animals were selected for as they would be more energy efficient and more likely to survive to adulthood than ones that do not.
You may not like it, but the tuna fish is peak hydrodynamic performance!
Cant wait for there to be, like, 4 different lines of crab convergent mon
Wo, I found your channel at the perfect time :0
one thing i think you should have in mind, is how the typings are super effective against the first mon, for example, digglet is ground type, which is weak against our water type wigglet; also tentacool, water/poison, weak against grass and ground toadscool.
IN LOVE with Carnigulp
I also love the fact that with the two original covergent mons were strong against the original.
With the teal mask we got another convergent Pokémon, poltchageist & sinischa, I’d love some based on some thing like say slowpoke, ect.
I actually had an idea for a Mantis Shrimp Lurantis!
6:25 Just pointing out that there are two kinds of mantis shrimp the ones you’ve based your convergent evolution on which is the clubbing mantis shrimp and the spear mantis shrimp. In particular the spear mantis shrimp actually has somewhat of a convergent evolution adaptation to the praying mantis the front two legs very closely resemble those of a praying mantis the main difference is that the praying mantis uses it’s front legs for grabbing and holding onto it’s prey while the spear mantis shrimp stabs its prey
Edit: evidence ua-cam.com/video/E_mbnXJh2Dk/v-deo.html
YIPPEEE NEW N0RTIST VID YAYYYYY
PS: This is a Wug. Now there is another one. Now there is yet another one! There are three of them. There are three _____.
Wugs. A trio of wugs. A wugtrio
Why is his background music such a bop
I'd argue that Pyukumuku, Pincurshin, and Snom are also convergent evolution based on their similar shape.
The moment you brought up an idea for an aquatic parasect convergent mon, I immediately thought decorator crab.
Lost opportunity to make the barnacles on the turtle back to be like eyes to that are controlling it, maybe a water/dark or water/psychic
Now this is a science lesson I wanna go to
I love the barnacle idea but the shell should have looked like one big barnacle
5:17 who does the music for these videos? I always love the little motifs from pokemon games in the music in the videos, and this time it's from the little mermaid!
5:44 aww, dire dire docks!
6:45 Rocky theme
