I always imagined for Poipole and Naganadel An Abandoned Laboratory shrouded somewhere in the darkness surrounding Ultra Megalopolis. The only available light is from a corrosive neon purple goop spread throughout the facility. Requires using a small pokemon to crawl through vents to unlock puzzles & doors. Final room has a giant smashed open canister overlooking a pit, a harsh purple glow at the bottom where the goop ate through the floor surrounding the canister. A curious poipole appears, available to catch. After catching/defeating, a very upset Naganadel attacks you, having a Totem Aura that boosts each stat by 1 stage. Basically a secret 9th Totem battle for you after you beat the main story. Instead of Poipole just being a gift, it gets its own little expedition quest you can go on by talking to the same NPC. You could also do it infinitely similar to the other UB wormholes, except each time after you beat the Totem Naganadel, it'll only be a Poipole that appears For Stakataka, probably some large labyrinth, thinking of something similar to Maze Runner? And for Blacephalon, i'd imagine an alien-ish looking cityscape with an even more alien looking circus tent. If you talk to the NPCs, they mention how it just showed up one day and everyone has been too scared to check inside. Similar to Hollow Knight's Grimm Troupe. Would be nice to see another UB from a Human world, like Ultra Ruin & Ultra Megalopolis
Your bit on developers being affraid to break the mold is on point. People for a long time complained that every game is similar and the designs are just animals with fantastical features and at the time, for me, the ultra beasts were a breath of fresh air, i absolutely loved the concept of extra-dimensional beings invading the main universe and still working like regular mons because they just were in their original world. Also, blacephalon is best boy and i will fight over it
no way i actually suggested in one video the idea of making stema creatures based on scientific mysteries and stuff like that, i don't think N0rtist actually saw it however, but its cool to see my idea made in somewhat
"A Pokémon can come from anywhere" That's the beauty of it, the artists take wild concepts and then turn it into a pet. For example: Hatterene is a reference to princesses, witches and childhood. Princess: the face revealed through a window at the top of a "tower", its body. Witch: the hat Childhood: the cotton candy coloration
Stakataka is probably partially inspirited by a siphinophore, which is invasive in Hawaii. Blacephalon is probably partially inspired by a dandelion, which are invasive in Hawaii (and many other locations).
Ultra beasts have always been my personal favorite group of pokemon. 10/10 designs across the board for me, think it was my gateway into my weird tastes in creature design
Xurketree is one of the scariest Pokemon concepts out there. Guzzlord may sound the most destructive, but also so unbelievable that it isn’t that intimidating and we know that it’s just trying to consume. Xurketree doesn’t look inherently aggressive or intelligent, its so non-humanoid that you really can’t tell if it’s doing what it’s doing out of some kind of intention or if its just an animal doing what feels natural. That one AR video of it climbing on a building before curiously noticing the camera man is pretty chilling because you just can’t tell if it’s reaching out in aggression, curiosity, perhaps to try communicating, or if it even perceives the camera man at all. Yeah they eat electricity but what more is there to them? I don’t know, they just feel so much more like non-conventional aliens than the other ultra-beasts, even Deoxys has an expressive face and a human body plan that makes it able to somewhat convey emotions.
I love Pheromosa. The fact that she can reach speeds faster than most just because of the lightweight nature of her body is fascinating. Also: PRESENTATION!!!
Man, I just want to give props for the bg music! The Melody that starts around 7:30 was quite impressive with how it seamlessly transitioned between several different tunes caught me my surprise! It might of been a thing through-out the whole video, but that is when I first noticed it.
I want them to make a sci-fi horror inspired game where you have the search out Ultra Beast encounters to document them... Like a combination of Detective Pikachu and the X-Files. That would be so cool. The Ultra Beasts have so much mystery and intrigue, and their alien-like designs would be perfect for mild sci-fi horror stories.
I’m actually a Capricorn, and I’m also a topology enthusiast. BTW, the only horoscopes I really ever read are the ones from The Onion. Also, I think it really cool that you made one of your “extradimensional” astrology-based STEM monsters based on a four-dimensional structure.
Ultra Beasts are cool as something so out there and alien in a way that even the “alien” pokemon are not but it really makes no sense to include them in the Pokedex. I understand the outrage it would’ve caused but it would’ve been so cool if they were something exclusive to Gen 7 as an extra thing that couldn’t move to Gen 8. Also - I liked the catch rates from Sun and Moon and I’m sad they changed it. The idea that Buzzwole was a route one creature in its universe was such a cool piece of world building that got written out
As I've been viewing your videos now that UA-cam suggested your channel to me, I do love that you're highlighting Casette Beasts when talking about indie monster raising games. Love that game.
YOO The one that gets spotlight is mine! Astrology in the science themed game works perfectly for this (I also had the casual uh-oh in my head at that mention), I like this guy he's very funky.
The Alola gen and Ultra Beasts are some of my favourite games and Pokémon in the series, especially Niheligo and Blacephalon. They’re so different and alien that they’re just so cool. This was a really cool dive into them Also really appreciate the bug warning too, thank you for that
I LOVE the zodiac inspiration for Stema's odd designs!! Using the Klein bottle as a funnel for sand made for an amazing silhouette, and just the ominous outlines of the other 11 makes me excited to see what else you have! I don't mind waiting all the way until Stema's postgame though
For an "otherwordly" theme in a STEM design, I'd suggest things that don't or can't exist. The Klein bottle is actually a decent example because it can't exist in 3 dimensions, but any kind of physical paradox could work. Penrose Triangle, Devil's Tuning Fork, Impossible Cube, Crazy Stairs, the impossibilities are endless!
When Cliff Stoll appeared on my screen, I grinned ear to ear and put my hands in the air. Doesn't surprise me at all that he's part of the positive energy of an already very interesting video. I'd have liked to hear more about your ideas about what *does* practically make the Ultrabeasts feel different, but it was a good watch and I always like the high-effort good video techniques.
This is my favourite concept ever introduced in Pokémon. They're weird af and don't look even like Pokémon. Kinda sad how they got replaced by POKÉMON BUT UGA BUGA and POKÉMON BUT ROBOT.
Great video - insightful and fun! While UBs were the biggest departure from what many consider the "Pokémon aesthetic," there have been interesting outliers since Gen 3. The Hoenn box legends' designs were way more detailed and saturated than anything before. And Zygarde could've easily waited out Gen 6 and been introduced as an UB.
I ALWAYS LOVED ULTRA BEASTS! THEIR ALIEN-FEELING AND UNNERVING NATURE JUST FELT SO COOL AND HONESTLY SHOULD BE USED AGAIN, OR AT LEAST INSPIRE ANOTHER IDEA
A Pokémon based on animals that where affected by the chernoble power plant disaster, such as the catfish that grew to sizes as large as some sharks would be spectacular!
oh this explains so much lol im not one who keeps up too hard with pokemon, but i see it a lot because i still like it, and i NEVER knew what the deal was with these different looking ones, i didnt even know they were connected! i always liked them for their designs and how they stuck out!
also for other creature collection games, theres also ones on roblox! like loomian legacy, tales of tanorio, and doodle world! whats nice about them is that not only are they high quality and clearly full of love, but theyre free, which is soo nice nowadays
I love how Gamefreak approaches thier alien Pokémon like the UBs, Necrozma, Deoxys and Beeheyem. They treat them with a lot more mystery and feel a lot more ominous than any other Mon
Loved the video. The scenes showed, detailed description of the ultrabeasts concept, also the fact that you are making a creature collector game yourself, up to the mood-change supportive farewell. First of your videos I watch but I'm subscribing. Thank you, it was a really fun, informative and even inspiring video. ❤
honestly, a region like unova again where you only have new pokemon could work, BUT they would also have lots of regional forms, so it would still include some classic mons. i would like that
Finally someone actually recognized how cool ultra beasts are. I would LOVE a legends game that takes place in ultra-space. A whole entire class left in one generation would be a huge mistake to not bring it back and expand on them further. Theres only a small handful of them now, imagine if we had like 20 of them!! They are new, powerful, unique, and fun to look at. I loved the ultra beasts the second I met them
having the "ultra beast"-counterparts of a science-based creature collector have pseudoscience-based secondary inspirations would kind of go hard, reinforcing the vibes of them being Not Meant To Be In This World. (hopefully one can do that while avoiding that tenet about giving people the wrong ideas from the video invonlving cramming too many concepts into one mon)
Coromon has one of the nices shiny systems ive seen and has so much charm like the old pixel art pokemon games was great to see it get some love, great video glad i found you afew weeks ago
I haven't played through too many Indie creature collectors, but I highly recommend Cassette Beasts, tons of fun, quite a few creative designs, variable difficulty (that you can change partway through if you put it too hard/easy), great characters, and an interesting twist on combat that makes early game moves still viable to keep around, even at the end game.
One thing i find interesting about the ultra beasts is that most of them aren't malicious They are mostly lost, scared and confused, which is something i noticed in the go promotional videos
When I clicked on this video I did not expect to finally get a good explanation of what the deal is with the Klein bottle! Genuinely the best explanation I’ve ever heard, I never truly understood it until now.
The ultra beasts have to be my favorite pokemon sub-group ever. They not only allow for some outrageous designs, but concepts as well. It helps that when you look at a pokemon that is so bizarre in appearance, you immediately think ultra beast. The ultra beasts as a whole unlock a whole new dimension of pokemon and fakemon designs, yours included.
A couple tidbits: Ultra, Dusk Mane, and Dawn Wings Necrozma all have the ULTRA BEAST tag in the TCG. And the roach species Nocticola pheromosa, got its name from Pheromosa
omg I'm being reminded of when I tried to make my own ultra beast fakemon based off the zodiac! it's really hard to design a pokemon while intentionally making it not look like a pokemon, especially when working with the concepts of the zodiacs, but I absolutely found it helpful to take the base concept and think "how would a different series make a creature based off this zodiac?" doesn't even have to be a creature collector, depending on how out there you want to go you can ask "how would Zelda design this creature?" or "how would Dark Souls design this creature?" or even outside of games like "how would the Godzilla movies design this creature?" and then try to see if you can merge that design with a few traits of your own creature style to find a nice balance where it's not too jarring compared to your other creatures but still sticks out and looks alien in comparison
I absolutely adore UBs. I’m torn because I really want more, but the fact that they’re so different is such a big part of what I love about them! I definitely want them to stay under 1% of the total Pokemon population. When I first played SM I hadn’t seen any of the trailers other than the starter reveal, so my first time encountering Nihilego was mind-blowing.
I adore the Ultra-Beasts, so im very happy to see a video about them that's positive!!! My absolute favorites are Pheremosa and Nihilego, although Celesteela and Blacephalon are up there :D I wasn't aware of the invasive species inspiration however. Makes me like them even more!
The Ultra Beasts are still my absolute favorite concept in Pokemon. They're weird, they're whacky, they make absolute no god damn sense and I LOVE IT. Also, a perfect Ultra Beast equivalent for your Project Stem would be creatures based on magic! Necromancy, pyromancy, biomancy, etc.; it breaks the rules of science, just like how Ultra Beasts break the rules of Pokemon design.
STEMA is such a cool concept :D I think perplexing, fun science concepts like the klein bottle and non-euclidean geometry would also serve as a good inspiration for ultra beast-esque creatures. Things that are not, and cannot be in the world we perceive, but could exist in layers beyond what we know. If that makes sense. I'm not good at articulating.
10:37 I remember distinctly, years and years ago when gen 3 came out, a thread on serebii forums of people complaining about the designs of the gen 3 pokemon, saying they were unpokemon-like.(I remember someone going off on specifically Gulpin and Swalot..?) So yeah, it's interesting how once the designs have been around they osmose into like the general accepted idea of what a pokemon creature design is.
I feel like a fun way to do scientific ultrabeasts would be by basing them off of disproven old scientific concepts like aether, spontaneous life, 3 humours, etcetera
Great video! Love the point of not everything sharing a single brand name. It's culture, but it's marketing and branding culture. So anything that has the resources to be widespread/monopolize is gonna become the next kleenex 😂 As an artist, I love seeing the thinking behind designs. Being rather long-lived, Pokémon has developed a design philosophy but you can see each generation has their own inner conventions within that wider philosophy. Gen 7 is one of my favorites.
Casette beasts also does this in a kind of similar way with the "Archangels", the only differance being that Archangels break the conventions of the game's artstyle as a whole, and are mostly unobtainable.
Honestly these guys are great for how unique they all feel compared to everything that came before it. Such a shame they didn’t make to Scarlet and Violet but I understand they probably wanted to focus on Paradox Pokémon. Hope both groups can appear in a game together (which probably isn’t gonna be happening anytime soon)
To be fair, if I got sand blasted by a walking bottle in my eyes, and instead of pain, I was shown my birth in one eye, and the bottle violently killing and eating me in the other, I would probably be confused for long enough that the bottle could turn that prediction into reality.
7:58 The only game I can think of that had upgraded graphics without just looking realistic is Brilliant Diamond/ Shining Pearl. They really capture the cartoony world design of older games while still being visually great.
I'm here wishing all Ultra Beast enjoyers a very pleasant browing UA-cam today. (My favorites are Stakataka Blacephelon and probably number one Xurkitree! I caught a shiny in S&S and he's my guy. My funky dude.)
I really like your style man its always awesome to see how you draw the pokemon and your own designs. Also using zodiacs for your designs is really cool because of the whole pseudoscience thing considering the theme of your game.
I really want a Legends-style game where we get to further explore the Ultra Space Dimensions I especially want to see more Pokemon from each homeworld, maybe even regional style ones from our world, like an Ultra Deep Sea Lanturn
13:27 Okay this this small rant about how Pokemon has made a monopoly on the creature collecting genre is similar to how Doom got the first person shooter genre going. When first person shooters first started getting going they were called Doom clones.

You could also do it infinitely similar to the other UB wormholes, except each time after you beat the Totem Naganadel, it'll only be a Poipole that appears
For Stakataka, probably some large labyrinth, thinking of something similar to Maze Runner?
And for Blacephalon, i'd imagine an alien-ish looking cityscape with an even more alien looking circus tent. If you talk to the NPCs, they mention how it just showed up one day and everyone has been too scared to check inside. Similar to Hollow Knight's Grimm Troupe. Would be nice to see another UB from a Human world, like Ultra Ruin & Ultra Megalopolis
Idk why, but I have a random headcanon blacephalon is from the same place as xurkitree, just in a different part. And are natural enemies.
@Selfdestructingwii One is related to electricity, the other to explosions
I can see the relation
@@BreakyOnline plus there's an episode where the two try to literally outperform eachother
At least there’s always the official Pokemon Center artwork of their home dimensions.
Also, blacephalon is best boy and i will fight over it
no way i actually suggested in one video the idea of making stema creatures based on scientific mysteries and stuff like that, i don't think N0rtist actually saw it however, but its cool to see my idea made in somewhat
the ultra beasts are such a cool part of pokemon, like they all have absolute banger designs
and they got a whole season of sun and moon dedicated to them
I find it funny how a muscular mosquito, a bomb clown, and a sentient brick wall are all part of the same group.
Average comic book villain group
"A Pokémon can come from anywhere"
That's the beauty of it, the artists take wild concepts and then turn it into a pet. For example: Hatterene is a reference to princesses, witches and childhood.
Princess: the face revealed through a window at the top of a "tower", its body.
Witch: the hat
Childhood: the cotton candy coloration
Childhood could also be a reference to the fact that Hatterene, her actual body, is like, 1 foot tall
Stakataka is probably partially inspirited by a siphinophore, which is invasive in Hawaii.
Blacephalon is probably partially inspired by a dandelion, which are invasive in Hawaii (and many other locations).
Love the beasts. 7:31 unexpected Northernlion jumpscares are my favorite UA-cam gag because they show up on the most random of channels
I hope GF continues adding weirdos, both new and continuing support of the groups we have now!
As Thorgi's arcade says, in Fighting Games, it's not just the Faces. YOU NEED THE FREAKS!
And size-to-body-wise, Pheromosa is actually SLOWER than a real cockroach.
Man, I just want to give props for the bg music! The Melody that starts around 7:30 was quite impressive with how it seamlessly transitioned between several different tunes caught me my surprise!
It might of been a thing through-out the whole video, but that is when I first noticed it.
The ultra beasts are my most favourite Pokemon
Same!
Based
Same
W + based + same
I want them to make a sci-fi horror inspired game where you have the search out Ultra Beast encounters to document them... Like a combination of Detective Pikachu and the X-Files. That would be so cool. The Ultra Beasts have so much mystery and intrigue, and their alien-like designs would be perfect for mild sci-fi horror stories.
7:34 seeing NL of all people pop up and then seeing his reaction gave me whiplash tbh
Now it could make sense since Ultra Beasts belongs to the Outer Space Tribe while the Paradox Pokemons does belong to the Time Travel Tribe
Astrology in the science themed game works perfectly for this (I also had the casual uh-oh in my head at that mention), I like this guy he's very funky.
the Northernlion Pokedoku clips are hilarious - this is the first time I've seen a pokemon content creator reference him
It's so funny
My faves are Pheromosa, Celesteela, and Blacephalon. (And Poipole, it’s super cute especially in the anime)
The Alola gen and Ultra Beasts are some of my favourite games and Pokémon in the series, especially Niheligo and Blacephalon. They’re so different and alien that they’re just so cool. This was a really cool dive into them
Also really appreciate the bug warning too, thank you for that
I LOVE the zodiac inspiration for Stema's odd designs!!
I love how your Celesteela emoji drawing feels so ... compacted compared to the original one hehe
Also, Pheromosa for life. Death to Buzzwole !!
…
So, a bunch of dead Pokémon?
Because that’s what happens to all the animals in the fallout area.
I hope we get more Ultra Beasts in future Pokemon games. They always had such unique typings and designs, so it’d be great to have more.
Omg!! A video based on the Ultra Beasts!!
oh this explains so much lol im not one who keeps up too hard with pokemon, but i see it a lot because i still like it, and i NEVER knew what the deal was with these different looking ones, i didnt even know they were connected! i always liked them for their designs and how they stuck out!
also for other creature collection games, theres also ones on roblox! like loomian legacy, tales of tanorio, and doodle world! whats nice about them is that not only are they high quality and clearly full of love, but theyre free, which is soo nice nowadays
Really really enjoy both the idea of Klein bottles and the Capricorn creature. Phenomenal, adore it
I love how Gamefreak approaches thier alien Pokémon like the UBs, Necrozma, Deoxys and Beeheyem.
the northernlion jumpscare was much appreciated, if unexpected
honestly, a region like unova again where you only have new pokemon could work, BUT they would also have lots of regional forms, so it would still include some classic mons. i would like that
Finally someone actually recognized how cool ultra beasts are. I would LOVE a legends game that takes place in ultra-space. A whole entire class left in one generation would be a huge mistake to not bring it back and expand on them further. Theres only a small handful of them now, imagine if we had like 20 of them!! They are new, powerful, unique, and fun to look at. I loved the ultra beasts the second I met them
There's actually a way to distinguish between ultra beast and regular pokemon.
At the end of their cry they have space like sound.
having the "ultra beast"-counterparts of a science-based creature collector have pseudoscience-based secondary inspirations would kind of go hard, reinforcing the vibes of them being Not Meant To Be In This World.
Caprikleiiiiin soooo cool!!!! The 3 eyes!!!! The hole as a spot to shoot stuff out of! Really awsome design!
Don’t forget that guzzlord while being one of the weird ultra beast, also has some weird similarities to another Pokémon: Zygarde?
What are they outside of the Dragon type and being found in terminus cave?
One thing i find interesting about the ultra beasts is that most of them aren't malicious
They are mostly lost, scared and confused, which is something i noticed in the go promotional videos
I’d say the only actively malicious ones are nehilego and blacephalon.
When I clicked on this video I did not expect to finally get a good explanation of what the deal is with the Klein bottle! Genuinely the best explanation I’ve ever heard, I never truly understood it until now.
By the way, I love your zodiac UBs ideas!! That fits so well with your premise!!
Dude who makes the thumbnails they are SO GOOD
A couple tidbits: Ultra, Dusk Mane, and Dawn Wings Necrozma all have the ULTRA BEAST tag in the TCG. And the roach species Nocticola pheromosa, got its name from Pheromosa
I loved pokemon sun and moon, i wish they never took it off of netflix. The ultra beasts were always my favorite
omg I'm being reminded of when I tried to make my own ultra beast fakemon based off the zodiac! it's really hard to design a pokemon while intentionally making it not look like a pokemon, especially when working with the concepts of the zodiacs, but I absolutely found it helpful to take the base concept and think "how would a different series make a creature based off this zodiac?" doesn't even have to be a creature collector, depending on how out there you want to go you can ask "how would Zelda design this creature?" or "how would Dark Souls design this creature?" or even outside of games like "how would the Godzilla movies design this creature?" and then try to see if you can merge that design with a few traits of your own creature style to find a nice balance where it's not too jarring compared to your other creatures but still sticks out and looks alien in comparison
My absolute favorites are Pheremosa and Nihilego, although Celesteela and Blacephalon are up there :D
I wasn't aware of the invasive species inspiration however. Makes me like them even more!
Love the megamind xurqitree reference: oh youre a villian allright just not a SUPER ONE
One of my favorite videos you have done so far! Great work
I love when pokemon go UA-cam channel makes found footage type videos for the ultra beasts
I love the fact that your saying the correct pronunciation for Hawaii
STEMA is such a cool concept :D I think perplexing, fun science concepts like the klein bottle and non-euclidean geometry would also serve as a good inspiration for ultra beast-esque creatures. Things that are not, and cannot be in the world we perceive, but could exist in layers beyond what we know. If that makes sense. I'm not good at articulating.
I love Ultra Beasts so much! We already had extraterrestrial Pokémon before, but these guys felt truly alien. I hope we get more of them some day.
ULTRA BEAST HAS LIKE FIVE OF MY FAVORITE POKÉMON LETS GO
And they are?
So anything that has the resources to be widespread/monopolize is gonna become the next kleenex 😂
As an artist, I love seeing the thinking behind designs. Being rather long-lived, Pokémon has developed a design philosophy but you can see each generation has their own inner conventions within that wider philosophy. Gen 7 is one of my favorites.
I absolutely love the UBs, and it's funny how I made a Mobius-strip inspired (Ultra Beast fakemon) creature at one point too!
Great video ❤
Casette beasts also does this in a kind of similar way with the "Archangels", the only differance being that Archangels break the conventions of the game's artstyle as a whole, and are mostly unobtainable.
I'm so glad to hear you talk about dr cliff stoll!!! i love his numberphile videos, hes such an inspiring guy
I like this set of mons. Celesteela, Pheromosa, and Kartana being my fav of the set.
To be fair, if I got sand blasted by a walking bottle in my eyes, and instead of pain, I was shown my birth in one eye, and the bottle violently killing and eating me in the other, I would probably be confused for long enough that the bottle could turn that prediction into reality.
couldnt care less about the topic, but funky freaking thumbnail, keep making em like that PLEASE
I like how the moment you showed Caprikline's silhouette i knew what it was referencing lol
I really like your style man its always awesome to see how you draw the pokemon and your own designs. Also using zodiacs for your designs is really cool because of the whole pseudoscience thing considering the theme of your game.
I really want a Legends-style game where we get to further explore the Ultra Space Dimensions
I especially want to see more Pokemon from each homeworld, maybe even regional style ones from our world, like an Ultra Deep Sea Lanturn
7:37 no way! Hahaha. I was literally thinking about this clip from just the thumbnail of this video.
I love the thumbnail. It really reminds me of Ben 10.
4:45 Xurketree could also take inspiration from sea urchins which are known to invasive in places like tasmania
13:27
Okay this this small rant about how Pokemon has made a monopoly on the creature collecting genre is similar to how Doom got the first person shooter genre going. When first person shooters first started getting going they were called Doom clones.
Ah yes, Origami is the scariest invasive species...
maybe its supposed to be samurai?
The paper cuts…
@@soulmaster9481 They really do a number on the native population.
