In those days, Nan (god bless her ) used to go to the fish market ( Remember them ? ) to get a couple of Plaice for her dinner and a pound of Pollock for the cats !!. Pollock in them days (60s/70s) was considered as not worth eating.....
Hi there. I’m a chippy owner and I’m here looking for ideas after talking to a customer. Please may I ask, was your Friday tea from a chippy and if so did the batter and fry the whole back for you?
HOW did I miss this one!? You brought back memories for me. Dad was given half a dozen dog fish one day. He knew they needed skinning but no advice on how was given. The end result was nailing it through the head to the upright of the shed door and vigorous pulling with pliers and whatever else could be found! Mum wrote an account of it what as published in the Farmers Weekly, along with the cartoon of it that my eldest brother drew - a bit like the kids book about the Great Big Giant Turnip. We did get the fish skinned and we all ate well - a truly enjoyable meal and sadly often overlooked by those who don't realise just how good it is! A bit of Rock and Chips - yes please! Love to Hannah - she did a great job there! xxx
Very tasty looking dishes john and your way of filleting beats hanging the dog fish on a nail on the outside loo door, thank you and and your good lady for a super video.

You should make a video where you explain all of the different shells and what not on the shoreline. You mention them alot in your coastal foraging videos , but it would be so cool to have a compilation video. Thanks for great content. Hope you and your family are safe, super job!
- Thanks Bob. Such an underrated fish, discarded by 95% of anglers on the beach. Criminal isn't it. Take care mate and give our love to your good lady. :)
Thanks for sharing Mr Locker , I remember my first introduction to eating fish was with this humble beast, I think my father thought I wouldn’t be put off because of the no bones thing . Certainly a much underestimated eating fish and so versatile as mrs locker showed. I guess most folk are put off by the skinning hassle and must admit I invented many new swear word through frustration in my early attempts🤬 and one time I remember getting slapped full in the face with the pliers and sandpaper skin 😲 ... to be honest 🤔 not much has changed 😉 keep well, stay safe
- I think you are right, I was discussing this with someone earlier. A fish that is discarded by 95% of anglers - likely because of the skinning. Take care mate and stay safe. Soon be out fishing again. :D
Once again another great video John, about 2 days ago I seen a video thumbnail of various seashells and said happy days a new video from the fish locker, UA-cam had recommended a video from a different channel for me, I said I ain't got time for that haha. Keep'em coming and again hope all the family are safe, much respect.
Thomas McCague - Haha. Who’s was the channel? There have been quite a few channels who have taken up our style of videos and thumbnail following the success of our vids. 😊👍🏻🐚
@@TheFishLocker I can't actually remember the channel name, the thumbnail had various sealife on a skewer over a flame, some shells in and rocks in the background, probably a great channel and video but unless it was from yourself I wasn't interested, goes to show the popularity of your video content that it's inspiring others to give it a go 👍
Thomas McCague - Well thank you very much for your loyalty. Yes it’s flattering in one sense but a little annoying in another as some of these other channels are giving some really bad advice.

Interesting . I made a Dogfish (might have been a Huss) 'curry' when I was a young man - didn't go well. Didn't go well at all! Put me off. This looks way more promising, - the 'breaded fish fillet' looks especially good. I'm pretty much entirely lure fishing these days (chance would be a fine thing!), so I'm not exactly expecting to catch dogs, but always good to know what to do. Thanks for sharing.

Always happy to take a doggie, even though people complain about catching them. Good to eat, they do have a slightly prawny texture! I slip a loop of paracord around the head and tie it to a kitchen cupboard door handle to make the skinning easier and avoid nasty surprises with pliers slipping and me flinging the fish across the room! Haha. Thanks for the vids, as always.
Very nicely done and you did good too, John! We get a lot of Spiny dogfish in the winter and Spring off the Eastern seaboard of the United States. I enjoy them. Skinning, just take off the fillet on both sides and then lay skin side down and skin from tail up with a knife under the meat like a regular fish Soak in milk overnight to draw out the Urea and then cook. Make Shark Nuggets with them, sometimes. Cut in chunks, toss in seasoned coating and then bake in the oven. Children enjoy them that way. Take care, great video.
The Fish Locker , I forage here in the mountains of Virginia, USA. I’ve never lived close to the sea, so your escapades are educational and entertaining. Thanks for uploading these.
This is probably going a little out of your purview, but I heard that in Medieval times people used shark skin exactly like how we might use sandpaper today. Do you think they might have done the same thing with dogfish skin? If so, about how long do you guess it would stay good/unrotted for? Interesting video as always. I've got to try that stir fry!
- I have also seen that method several times. But thought it a bit brutal for UA-cam. There are guidelines on what you can and cant show and there's always someone ready to get offended. ;)
@@TheFishLocker yes I dont mind the preparing of animals if it's done right. It isnt always a pretty sight but it's the circle of life as they say. If anyone around me ever needed to skin a dogfish now I can help 😆
Well done Mr and Mrs Fish locker. I have cooked dogfish numerous times over the years. It's an underestimated food source. I must say ive never thought of cooking it in a wok before. Hopefully I will get to try it soon. Thanks for posting another great vid. Superb.!!!! 👏👏👏👏
Shelly Talker - You know Shelly I had no idea catfish could be skinned that way until people have told me in these comments. I can’t wait to try the next time I get to the states. The next channel cat is getting skinned and filleted!! 😛🍽🐟

Nicely done! And the mix of pasta, salad greens and the fish is my kind of cooking, too. I converted my dinner partner from a different plate for salad and pasta to a one plate woman. As recently as last evening’s meal.
As a kid dogfish was the only fish I would eat. I still love it till this day. Thanks for the stir fry idea can't wait till I try it. Hopefully we can all get our rods out soon till then you and your family stay safe.
Takes me back to the days when every 'Chippy' sold 'Rock Salmon' 'Rock Eel' 'Huss' etc, depending on what part of the country you were in. I used to like it with loads of vinegar. Thanks for keeping us in touch with all things fishy. 😊 Ps the recipes looked yummy. 🐟🎣🍽👍😊
- I was saying that to someone earlier. I don't know if it was more of a northern thing as I have never seen it down south in a chippy? Take care mate and stay safe. :)
Ah this is the one I've been waiting for 😊 my friend dropped some fresh Huss into me a couple of weeks ago , it was caught the same day from a boat in Littlehampton . It's been in the freezer and I will now defrost and bread it to fry . Fantastic 💚 I do so look forward to your videos , thankyou 🐟🐙 and stay safe all of you 💖
Hi John thanks for excellent vid and to your good lady for cooking demo. My wife’s favourite is dogfish. Another way to remove skin is to pour boiling water over skin, then you can scrape skin off really easily with a knife. It does slightly cooked the fish doing it this way.

I'm originally from Poland, but I am currently leaving in Brighton for last 12 years. I just get to sea fishing last year. My 6 years old son asked me 'can we go for the fishing' and then I said 'no problem'... We went to our local tackel shop to bay rod and reel combo for £50. First fishing we lost all tackel 5 sets no fish 😭. But we never surrender. We started studying sea fishing art, and boom third fishing sea bass 55cm lovely dinner 😏and then Conger, stingray and more bass etc And hundreds off whitties😁 thanks to you and your tips You make wonderful job and now we get our first Spider 🦀 delicious
Didn't think anyone ate those.... looked really good and easy will have to try now thanks. You guys keep up the great work I love learning about what you can and cant eat. Cheers
Hi John, great video as usual. I catch and eat a lot of the doggies & smooth hounds that I catch out in the Thames Estuary. I was shown an additional step in the skinning process a while a go which I think makes life a bit easier. It follows your method exactly but just before you start the skinning you also do a shallow cut just breaking the skin along the top of the fish from the head to the tail and then another one underneath following the same line too. You then take the skin off starting at the head on one side of the cut with the pliers and go down to the tail, then do the other side so the skin comes off in two parts. It's generally much easier to do it this way and takes a bit less grunt to get the skin off. I seem to have more successful 'all off at once' jobs since i've been doing it that way too. BTW - I've started using turkey/catfish skinning pliers which are awesome for doing dogfish & Rays.

That first dish with the noodles looked great. I might have to try that one sometime when I pick up a dogfish.
- Watch, you wont be able to catch one now. :P Haha. Tight lines mate. :)
Z Worm - We have plans for a nugget style video 😉👍🏻🐟🍽
@@TheFishLocker Shark nuggies, with ketchup! Then the kiddies will eat their lunches! Look forward to it 😊
Great video. I was wondering when you will be eating one. You always let them go when you catch them.
- Yes, we often let them go because we have other fish we prefer to eat and they can be a bit of a chore to clean and skin.
Envious, but glad that you two are both situated to where you can forage the coast, and have the knowledge to do so. Enjoyable!
- We are very fortunate to live where we do. It has taken us a while to get to the situation we are in but it has all been worth it. :)
The Fish Locker , I forage here in the mountains of Virginia, USA. I’ve never lived close to the sea, so your escapades are educational and entertaining. Thanks for uploading these.
Doug Zirkle - I bet you could teach us some fascinating things about foraging in your area. 😊👍🏻🌿
- Yes I have heard tell of carpenters in olden days using dogfish skin as sandpaper. ;)
Nice to see your daughter helping out with the 🍳👩🍳
i was taught when i was young nail on fence then pull skin off
- I have also seen that method several times. But thought it a bit brutal for UA-cam. There are guidelines on what you can and cant show and there's always someone ready to get offended. ;)
@@TheFishLocker YES. You don't want your video to be demonetised by you know who.
- The Dog Fish is so' tasty! Nice one ...
- It is a much underrated fish isn't it. Very common and with a little bit of effort, very good eating fish. :)
@@TheFishLocker - Exactly! Look forward to cach more of them and other stuffs and cook, but after LockDown. Cheers with a cold beer mate!
"Rock Salmon"... HAH! How posh! :-)
- It's all about the way you sell it ;)
It's nice. To see the cooking of fish made easy well done I will look for more.
We have some wonderful catch and cooks on the channel. I hope you enjoy them. 😊
We call people like that “snowflakes “. I guess it’s like sausage, you like the product ,you just don’t want to see how it is made.
- Haha. Exactly that. Coincidentally I used to work in a butchers when I was a boy. All I tell folks is avoid anything with strong flavourings. ;)
The skinning sound gave me chills Haha but those dishes looked absolutely yummu!
- At least you watched the whole thing. Even if you don't have any intention of ever skinning a dogfish its interesting yo know isn't it.
@@TheFishLocker yes I dont mind the preparing of animals if it's done right. It isnt always a pretty sight but it's the circle of life as they say. If anyone around me ever needed to skin a dogfish now I can help 😆
VanessaHBIC - I am glad that you feel that way. It is the way we are teaching our children. They know where their food comes from. 😊👍🏻🍽
Hannah thanks for the recipe that really looks fresh and yummy. I like dishes that look fresh and also.
- Thank you Rosemary. My wife Hannah is a wonderful cook she really is, I am glad that you enjoyed the recipes. Take care. :)
Both dishes looked delicious, you're a lucky man John.

Old one but a good one.
It's brilliant mate
Well done Mr and Mrs Fish locker. I have cooked dogfish numerous times over the years. It's an underestimated food source. I must say ive never thought of cooking it in a wok before. Hopefully I will get to try it soon. Thanks for posting another great vid. Superb.!!!! 👏👏👏👏
- It is our pleasure Matt. It works perfectly in a stir fry like that because it has that prawn like texture. Take care mate :)
Hi Mr and Mrs Fishlock down nice cooking and not bad skinning ; stay safe stay well hope the boy is doing well.
fred dimble - Thanks Fred. Full credit to Mrs Fishlocker here though. I just catch them she does all the work. 😊👍🏻🍽🐟
The food looks superb nice one👌
John j - Thank you John. Well worth a try. 😉👍🏻🐟🍽
Wow, skinning a dogfish looks similar to a catfish. The skin of the dogfish looks like it’s held to the body much tighter. Nice job!
Shelly Talker - You know Shelly I had no idea catfish could be skinned that way until people have told me in these comments. I can’t wait to try the next time I get to the states. The next channel cat is getting skinned and filleted!! 😛🍽🐟
The Fish Locker fishermen carry pliers to skin the cat 😊.
There it is. Nicely done!
😉
very nice thanks john and hannah stay safe all lockers

Jason Kemp - Full credit goes to Mrs Fishlocker for these cooking ones. I just catch the fish. She’s the talent. 😊👍🏻🍽
This is turning into a great reference series, preparing different fish then different ways to serve it. I hope if I ever get back to the coast, I can put them to use. Thank you for continuing to entertain us during the lockdown and you and your family stay safe.
- It is our pleasure David, we are doing our best to keep the videos going as I know that some folks really appreciate the positive distraction. Lets hope that this lockdown doesn't go on for too much longer and take care mate. :)
Looks scrumptious!

You and your wife are really Blessed! You are fantastic at what you do and your wife makes a delicious meal with it! Outstanding! 👏👏💖
- Thank you so much. I am glad you are still enjoying the videos Misty, best wishes and have a lovely day.
Nicely done! And the mix of pasta, salad greens and the fish is my kind of cooking, too. I converted my dinner partner from a different plate for salad and pasta to a one plate woman. As recently as last evening’s meal.
- Thank you very much. True credit belongs to Mrs Fishlocker for these vids, I just catch the fish. Take care and stay safe. :)
Great team effort.... As always... 👌

As a kid dogfish was the only fish I would eat. I still love it till this day. Thanks for the stir fry idea can't wait till I try it. Hopefully we can all get our rods out soon till then you and your family stay safe.
- Yes mate, hopefully things will calm down a little and we will be able to get back fishing soon. Take care and stay safe. :)
Great clean and cook as always John - ATB
Flat Broke Frank - Thanks Frank. Take care my friend. 👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker 'Rock Salmon' was very popular with the older generation of Londoners, it's much less common these days.
Thank you for the video! I really appreciate you using all the animal! Waste not, want not!
- Nothing goes to waste. Hopefully we can turn whats left into a crab or a lobster. ;)
Well that waz one hell of skining ...i bet waz good .👍👍..she cooks good 🌹🌹🌹🌹

Ah this is the one I've been waiting for 😊 my friend dropped some fresh Huss into me a couple of weeks ago , it was caught the same day from a boat in Littlehampton . It's been in the freezer and I will now defrost and bread it to fry . Fantastic 💚 I do so look forward to your videos , thankyou 🐟🐙 and stay safe all of you 💖
- Roxie it is our pleasure. One of the things you can also do with Huss is chunk it and batter or bread and fry. It is a lot like scampy. ;)
I’m so hungry... ok, going to eat! Thanks FishLocker!
- It is our pleasure Mary. Take care and stay safe. :)
Beautiful! Love it!! (Looks wonderful! Saving this recipe...)
- Simple, easy and delicious. In fact the hardest part if the skinning. Haha.
@@TheFishLocker LOL!! True! I remember my Dad showing me how to skin a dogfish!!)
Mike Otley - It is our pleasure Mike. 😊👍🏻
Hi John thanks for excellent vid and to your good lady for cooking demo. My wife’s favourite is dogfish. Another way to remove skin is to pour boiling water over skin, then you can scrape skin off really easily with a knife. It does slightly cooked the fish doing it this way.
Gatsby - I have tried that before and never found the boiling water to work? 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for the shearing Mr and Ms Fish locker
Food looks great
I released sou many of dogis
Now ther will goo on the table
Good bless you and your family ⛏️🎣
Kristof Rugi - So many people do not know how good an eating fish they can be. It used to be common in the fish and chip shops up north back in the day. 😊👍🏻🐟🍽
We started studying sea fishing art, and boom third fishing sea bass 55cm lovely dinner 😏and then Conger, stingray and more bass etc
And hundreds off whitties😁 thanks to you and your tips
You make wonderful job
and now we get our first Spider 🦀 delicious
Kristof Rugi - It is all a learning experience. I am very glad that you and your son enjoy your fishing. 👍🏻🎣🐟🍽
Didn't think anyone ate those.... looked really good and easy will have to try now thanks. You guys keep up the great work I love learning about what you can and cant eat. Cheers
- That's the thing. Most people are put off by the skinning but they can be really good eating fish. :)
Quality video as always ..I shall be trying dogfish once we are all aloud back out 👍🏼
Joe Miller - Glad you enjoyed it Joe. Let’s hope we get out of lockdown soon. 🤞🏻🎣😊
Looked so nice mouth is watering here. Never tried dogfish but defiantly one I’d like to try
- Give it a go mate. One of the most abundant fish in the UK and 95% of folks put them back.
The Fish Locker defiantly one to try when I catch a decent one. Cheers mate 👍👍👍
Lovely job.
*Ken Hom would be proud of that stir-fry!! 🈴 ☺️👍
Rottie - My good lady is a true treasure isn’t she. We are very lucky to have her. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker You sure are!! ☺️👍
Lovely cook and catch video. Well produced guys! Hope the little one is well!
- Thank you Julian, we are all keeping busy and trying to keep our heads down. I hope you and yours are doing ok? :)
- I will definitely try the two strips method next time. Thanks for the heads up ;)
Many thanks for sharing, got to try this when the lockdown is over. stay safe
- It is our pleasure Ian, remember. Sharp knife and good pliers. ;)
while you were skinning the dogfish i love how the newspaper just says "are you sitting comfortably?"
- I'd like to take credit for that. But just a very happy coincidence Haha :P
