@SaltySamFishing I have not tried it nor would I have entertained the thought of it.. until now. Yes, I will give it a shot. Thanks for the prep instructions.
The best way to make sure the flesh of the shark doesn’t smell like ammonia is after the catch, you gut it, clean it, ice it… you bring the shark home and you let is soak in ice water over night. Through osmosis the ammonia will naturally leave the flesh. Hope this helps.
Such a cool video! So cool to go from learning about the dogfish -- catching sessions -- steps on how to fillet it -- prepped, battered, and cooked -- YUM!!! ALSO, Great merch drop-- just ordered a fresh hat and cannot wait to rep the #SaltySam brand!
Love the video. Finally, someone cooking what people call trash fish. Dogfish are delicious! I usually keep one or two when I bait fish. Same thing with skate. The reason why you didn't smell or taste the ammonia on the dogfish is because you cut the head and gutted the fish right away. If you waited, then urine or urea starts to brake down in their skin creating the ammonia smell. There's no such thing as trash fish, just trash cooks! Subscribed!
I am at the point where I welcome a dogfish catch. SOS ya boy on a skunk streak lol. Dope video man! Keep them up, really enjoy it. Your transitions and ish are clean. My buddy always told me he liked Dogfish. Cleaning them asap seems to help with improving the taste as well.
Thanks Steve! You should give it a shot, you’d definitely be able to make something gourmet with it. Thats interesting about NYC, I wonder how they served it. Thanks for watching!
Nice hat! What part of LBI were you fishing? I fish Holgate area. Didn't get any dogs this year. Lots of small fluke. Kings and croakers came in with warm water. Lots of action for grandkids. I will be eating next dogfish I catch. Good stuff, thank you!
I fished Montauk on the Viking star for many years we used to run across such a large schools of dogfish that one day the Captain said catch all you can catch came back into port and sold them to treat his fish and chips so that’s what you’re getting with Arthur treatsfish and chips
Geeze. When I go surf fishing, dogfish and skates are pretty much all I can catch. I've often thought about trying to cook one since they're so darn plentiful, but was told they are basically inedible due to tasting like ammonia. I guess it could vary from shark to shark, depending on various conditions and circumstances. Kudos to you for doing the experiment though! Maybe I'll test my luck and cook up the next one I catch.
Give it a shot! Just make sure you prep it and get it on ice right away and that’ll help. Let me know if you try it, hopefully you have a good experience with it!
I went fishing for 5 days and only a day of luck I got 8 Dogfish that day. When I wanted blue fish. Used bucker, clam, and squid. I didn't know the regulations on them tho
I think the next video should be a catch and cook of skate, also I think let the fish have some flavor to really test if it’s a trash fish and don’t fry it.
I like Codfish Way better I've bled n iced them down right after catching them but don't really like them .. They have very firm meat too .. be well ........
Have you tried dogfish? After watching this, would you try it if you haven't already? Let me know your thoughts!
@SaltySamFishing I had made sharkfin soup out of the dogfish. I haven't cooked the fillets yet.

School of fish segment is great, awesome content
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
I will definitely be trying dogfish this summer
It’s worth it, go get ‘em!
Dang, I should not have watched this before I had my lunch. That battered fish looks amazing!
Thanks David, it really surprised me how good it tasted! This might be your sign to make some beer battered fish haha.
Just found the channel, love the content.
Thanks Carson, welcome!

I agree, every fish is good, it's all about how you cook it! Thanks for watching and I appreciate your informative comment!

I like that mentality, even if it’s dogfish you’re catching something! I think they fight pretty hard too and are fun to catch. Thanks for watching!
In England fish and chips are usually served with malt vinegar. It is available in Shop-Rites in NJ. Different but tasty. Nice video.
Thanks for the info and thanks for watching!
I will say I’m intrigued, there’s tons of them in Cape May
Give it a shot next time you catch one!
Really enjoying going to school to learn about the fish! Great bluefish catch too
Thanks bro!
I caught 1 last night i was happy to finaly have some action it was a slow night surf fishing
They put up a fun fight when it’s slow!
You’ve changed my mind about a lot of fish, definitely going to try some new fish!
@@JJRU_2026 I’m glad to hear that, lots of fish worth trying out there!
I just made Shark Fin Soup with the dogfish fins, it was amazing.
Wow shark fin soup sounds interesting, didn’t know that was a thing!
@@SaltySamFishing it's a big deal in Asia. So I figured I'd try it out myself! It was delicious
Nice video bro, I had no idea you could eat these. I would've taken the skate over the dogfish lol
Haha maybe someday soon I’ll try out a skate. I gotta get over the looks of them first 😂!
My first spiny dogfish, learned the hardway that they have a spine in the 2nd dorsal. I do not recommend forgetting that spine exists!
They don’t mess around!
more catch and cooks
Absolutely, got more on the way this summer!
Sam, excellent video man! I’ve never cooked dogfish before. I have seen it served at a restaurant in New York City before though! Amazing job
Thanks Steve! You should give it a shot, you’d definitely be able to make something gourmet with it. Thats interesting about NYC, I wonder how they served it. Thanks for watching!

Small fluke has been the theme of this year for sure, definitely give dogfish a try next time!
love the fishermans HQ hat! I fish Ship Bottom all the time. tight lines!
Fisherman’s HQ rules, definitely my favorite shop in NJ, thanks for watching!
In the UK, they don't use spiny or smooth dogfish. Its a completely different species.
Ah interesting, sorry for that oversight!
Sam ...how about doing a vid on sea robin the other " trash fish" ?
WAYNE
Hey Wayne, if I can catch one I’ll give it a shot!
I fished Montauk on the Viking star for many years we used to run across such a large schools of dogfish that one day the Captain said catch all you can catch came back into port and sold them to treat his fish and chips so that’s what you’re getting with Arthur treatsfish and chips
That’s cool, thanks for sharing that! They make for great fish and chips so I see why!
Try sea Robin next I heard it's delicious
I honestly rarely catch sea robin, but next time I do I’ll be sure to cook it! I’ve heard it’s really good!
Yes it is. Whenever I catch sea robins, I keep them and cook them. They are very good.
@@HoboAltros I’ll definitely give them a try then!
...and skate is superb eating, too. check out videos on how to take the wings off and skin them.
Yeah, seems like that might have to be the next catch and cook I try!
Cast farther out and at higher tides. Use bigger chunks. Night preferred.
Thanks for the tips! 🤙
Love this video! Very interesting about dogfish! Definitely want to try it! How about Skate? Give that a try!
Thanks! Might just have to try some skate in the future!
The little blue would make better bait than the frozen bunker...
Definitely would have! Didn’t think to use it at the time but was better to let him swim free since I had the bait on hand already.
they are too cute to eat :( really good fights tho great first shark for anyone
They definitely are a fun first shark to catch!

Can you use cut up bluegill some surf fishing or would the fish not eat it?
To be completely honest, I've never tried but I would guess that something out there might eat it!
I only eat trash fish
Absolute legend 💪
i didnt know you could keep them in nj
Yep you can!
@@SaltySamFishing is there a limit? i caught a lot the other day but did not keep any.
@@diend4926 There's technically no limit on dogfish in NJ
@@SaltySamFishing is that the same for skate as well
@@diend4926 yep!
Put apple cider vinegar on filets overnight. Takes our the urea

Why is this considered trash based on what 😂😂
Typically based on opinion and lack of proper preparation leading to an ammonia taste. When prepared right it’s good!
How dare you not cheers your girlfriend when she clearly tried to, for that we need a skate catch and cook next
😂 we’ll have to see about that one!
Skate is the poor man's scallops. People regularly cut out scallop shaped pieces out of the wings and try to pass them off as scallops😢
@@Noreasta508 I’ve heard that! I’ve heard the texture is fairly similar too.
She’s a good sport for trying it!
@@JJRU_2026 that she is!
Skates are annoying
Apparently they’re decent eating though 👀
