As a dietitian, I can say Dr. Bulsiewicz is spot on. Focus on the fiber and plant diversity -- many things will improve. This single change (increasing fiber) has helped my clients have clear colonoscopies after years of having pre-cancerous polyps (prior to eating too little fiber.) There is more that can be done, but your body needs fiber. Thank you for having him on Lewis.

Absolutely! The food we eat plays a significant role in our brain health and function. Certain nutrients in food can impact our brain chemistry and cognitive abilities. For example, omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like salmon can support brain function, while antioxidants in fruits and vegetables can help protect brain cells from damage.

Lewis, I became vegetarian and cut a few (awful) habits I had. But I did step by step, the only thing I did "cold turkey" was quitting cigarettes. For this, I used the law of attraction and manifestation. After 17 years of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, and more when I was consuming alcohol, I quit. I started by looking in the mirror and saying that I quit smoking. Every day, for maybe 3 months. Even though I was holding a cigarette, then... I quit.
After this, I felt so empowered so I moved to other things. I became vegetarian, forcing myself to eat lots of plants, I was a potato girl just like he mentioned. Then, I rewired my brain to quit putting sugar in my drinks, especially teas. I quit drinking soda. Now, I am trying to quit industrialized chocolate lol. Making my Reese's at home. I WILL GET THERE!!!

Great interview. Changing my diet helped in so many ways including depression, skin issues, brain fog, chronic fatigue. But eating all plants doesn't apply to everyone. Eliminating high FODMAP foods was saved my life. Those who have IBS need to do an elimination diet of mostly plants. Almonds sent me to the hospital. Recently, grapes had me doubled over, and asparagus makes my gut bloat along with many other plants. I do love plants but a person must fine tune what their bodies can process without meds. Meat is the most benign food most people can tolerate. Diversity and quantity helps.

I eat baby carrots and broccoli before my lunch and dinner to lessen the glucose spike and I noticed an improvement in satiety and I went from having one bowel movement to 2 a day. I also sometimes, not everyday, have warm water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar upon waking. I have no medical conditions and am of desirable weight and I have one tiny hemorrhoid. I need to add more greens 🥬

Very interesting. Smoothies can be a convenient way to get a variety of nutrients quickly, but blending fruits and vegetables can break down fiber, potentially leading to quicker sugar absorption. While fiber is not completely destroyed, it's altered, which might reduce the feeling of fullness and affect digestion.
Eating whole fruits and vegetables retains the fiber in its natural form, promoting better digestion, satiety, and a slower release of sugars into the bloodstream. For those focusing on maintaining stable energy and digestive health, whole foods are often preferable.
Smoothies can still be beneficial, especially if balanced with ingredients like leafy greens, seeds, or nuts to add fiber and healthy fats. But I believe that they aren't a one-size-fits-all solution, and for some people, especially those managing blood sugar, it may be better to limit fruit-based smoothies.
Also, depression, sadness, and confidence levels are complex and influenced by multiple factors. While the microbiome and diet do play a role in mental health, they are just one piece of the puzzle. Genetic predisposition, early life experiences, trauma, education, environment, and psychological factors all contribute significantly to our mental well-being.
Diet can affect serotonin production, inflammation, and gut health, which can influence mood and energy. However, genetics impact neurotransmitter regulation, and psychological factors like self-esteem and coping mechanisms are shaped by life experiences. So, while what we eat can help support mental health, it’s not the sole cause or solution to conditions like depression.
