I scored the ECM-M1 on EBay for $249 :-) I'm sitting in Manila and mic is in California. I won't meet my baby until the end of September, So great video... Trying to learn all the features from 8000 miles away.
I'm going to use this as my main shotgun mic on my FS7. I love the flexibility. Handling noise has always been a pain in the butt with my Sennheiser MKE 600 mounted on the FS7. I'm hoping this will be a better option. And the added option on the mic are a bonus.
Wound be amazing if STEREO was a MONO/STEREO switch to get all the options as stereo or mono but i guess at some point processing would be very demanding
This is only the 2nd review I’ve seen so far. Both I have to say are very sibilant. Those highs and “S” are way boosted. I think that would lead to ear fatigue?
A little tweaking in your edit software will fix this. I didn’t do any editing to the audio because I wanted you to hear what I got straight from camera, however, normally I’d do a little tweak in post to make it sound even better
@@JevenDovey not editing is why we come to you! It’s great to hear the sound untouched and make better decisions. Hope I didn’t come across as insulting towards you, not my intention at all.
Can you do a comparison against ECM-B1M? Which one is better? B1M has 8 microphones and 3 sound stages. M1 has only 4 microphones but 8 sound stages. Which one is better in sound?
Hi Jeven, great video and channel. I love finding what I want hear about on your channel. A question for you. With all these lovely Sony Microphones am I able to also use my Rode Wireless Pro at the same time? I have an older Sony XLR-K1M and whenever I plug it in it disables the camera microphone input which is really annoying. I’m thinking of getting a newer Sony microphone like this one reviewed but can’t find any info it will allow my rode to work at the same time. Thanks.
I ordered this with my A6700. I hope it comes soon. I hear it's supposed to come out in Friday. You sound great. I wonder if it can have more bass. Another video where they were reviewing this mic sounded tinny. The sound like strips the bass away from your voice. It feels somewhat unnatural. It produces a great sound but I like it when mics are a bit heavier on the bass than the DJI Mic and this mic.
That "rubbish truck" as we call it in England - seemed to be loud in all settings. I am researching my new cameras set up for long shots in busy camel markets for a project in Cairo later this year. So hoping to get a good directional audio set up. Not sure if this will give me much more than the a wireless mic that obvoiulsy picks up everything. Cost is not the issue, carrying all the equipment in one camera bag is the concern. Watching this, not sure if it's worth it for picking up sound, over using a wireless go 11 on a Sony A6700 with a Tamron 18-300mm. Any thoughts on a solutoin would be helpfull. Idealy use the wireless go 11 for my own voice and a directional mic at the same time for getting the subject noise ( the camels) that can be up to 50m or more away.
Thanks for the great video - because of you I traded in my Sigma 24-70 Art lens & my 16-35 Sony Zeiss for the Sony 20-70 F4 and the ECM-M1 microphone. How do you balance the DJI RS Mini with the ECM-M1 on top of the camera? And is it possible to get those low briefcase handle shots with the ECM-M1 mounted on top of the camera?
from the video I see they haven’t improved the mount system so I wouldn’t recommend this for vlogging you would still hear the mic bottoming out when you’re walking…I’ve tried all these types of mic from Sony… don’t get me wrong the sound qualities from these mics are good just not the mount system.
When I plug the ECM-M1 into the Sony ZV-E1 and then try and access the audio record levels monitor. It says this mic is not compatible with this feature? I have the four little bar Audio displays on the main screen but it can be hard to see as they are so small. On the internal mic it allows you to see the larger audio monitor level meter. Are you having the same issuer? seems crazy that a new mic is not compatible with their latest cameras? really weird!! hope you can help. Great videos as always.
Hey, great vid as always!! I've been watching you for years...I've got a quick question for ya. I just grabbed the M1 mic, when connected to my A74, there is a message on display "48k hz/ 24 bit 2ch" how the heck do I remove that? it's not fun to stare at. Thanks man!!!
Agreed, the two channel split mode is a no brainer and makes this a much more flexible tool! I do wonder though if the shock mount is any good. Unfortunately it wasn't tested in this video (great video though Jeven!) and I know the shock mount was the main complaint on some of their other microphones when shooting handheld and on the move. If anyone has tested it out let me know!
Thanks for the demo. Not only the direct connect is a nice feature for the Sony Mics but I always think using the same brand as my a7IV camera will have hidden benefits for the sound quality. Or am I just a hopeless romantic?
Love the directional controls. Not sure if you can answer this, but how would you rate the Stereo setting, compared to something like the Sennheiser MKE-440?
@@henrystravelcorner having just heard the difference first hand this past week between the Sony ECM-M1 & the Sennheiser MKE-440, the Sony does not even come close. The Sennhesier is light years better differentiating the sounds from Left to Right, Right to Left. Probably because of the 2 fangled forward facing mics, rather than a left/right mice set up as is on the top of the Sony. Maybe @JevenDovey can add something to this. As an overall Mic, I would say the Sony would be better for most people, but if solely wanting ambient ester sounds, such as fighter jets passing, the MKE-440 will be better.
Very user-friendly mic, but it doesn’t _sound_ great, but perhaps that’s the setting or some artifact of processing. Not a natural sound, very sibilant, kinda bright; I would love to hear it compared to other mics.
Fantastic review. It looks like a great mic with some cool and useful features and the sound quality is amazing. It would be perfect it it had an option to connect to an iPhone (or android) with and adapter cable like the Rode VideoMic Go II USB-C to lightning. Because of that, I don't think I can justify another mic. Perhaps if Sony would make it an option on the next gen. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Industry leading in it's control of pickup patterns. It solves a major problem regarding which mics to have with you and the time it takes to change them or otherwise be limited to the pattern of the mic you have with you. I'm curious about the sound quality compared to Sony's longer MI shotgun mic as well as how it compares to some of the more typical shotgun mics one might use otherwise.
Very nice review, thanks! Looks like it has the same shock mount system from the ecm-b1m and b10. It still looks like a great versatile mic. Just the price… I will stay with Sony ecm-b10, for me it sounds the best and is much cheaper.

Hi, a little late but how does the G1 compare to the M1?
Not too much difference between the medium and wide cone setting?
There is a difference. Medium is for a group of 2-3 people and the wide setting is like 180 degrees in front of camera

None
