Your a hell of a mobile mechanic, I’d say 95% of the mechanics in my area (Cincinnati) that aren’t working out of shop are morons and just trying to get peoples money. You also have to watch for collapsed rubber lines on the caliper. If the bleeder won't come loose I break the line loose. If caliper pushes in its the line. I know Matt knows that but maybe help a viewer. Believe me I have been in your shoes. The many trips are a pain. O'Reillys are great people to deal with.

I just replace 4 motor mounts and both cv joints on my sons car for about $600 or so. The shop wanted $1500 per cv joint part not included and it was $400 for each motor mount. Not that my opinion is worth much, if anything, but I have gotten into the habit of replacing the brake hose when a caliper fails. The reason behind this is that, because I refuse to not completely know why something fails, I have always captured the brake fluid in a clean container and about 85% of the time a caliper has failed, I have had rubber chunks or powder in the fluid. Followed up by removing the piston on the first 30 or so I replace and found piles of rubber jammed in behind the piston, causing it to stick. Does that mean it is always the hose? Absolutely not. Is it worth it to replace the hose while you are there? 100%, every time. Even at an additional 50-100 dollars, it is worth it to not have another caliper needing to be replaced next month and have a customer satisfied with my work and continue to call me when anything goes wrong. Might not be right for everyone, but it is right for me!

Also learning from my shop using channel locks to see if the piston is seized is better cause the techs have seen pistons move with those clamps but still have the vehicle come back with a seized caliper.

Thats the life of the mobile mechanic, I feel that struggle. You did everything right aside from not checking both sides, but even then if you visually checked both sides you wouldnt have known the caliper is siezed. In my shop the first thing we do during a brake job is push that piston in after everything has been torn down. You could have spent the time to clean everything and the last thing you did was push that piston in. That would have sucked. You handled it well. lesson learned.

Bro it’s brakes we all do it lol. I’ve done more brakes than can count. When depending one brakes they should be at least two or if you can all four. Dude did the right thing bcz when it comes to brake, it’s two at ones or all four. I won’t do brakes unless it’s two at a time or all fours but if you do the backs do the front but drums change them when your front brakes need to be fr

Back in the day I jacked up a 83 cutlass. The jack goes into the rear bumper to work. I jacked it up until I noticed just the rear was coming up. Bye bye car.

Frozen / leaking calipers are always a possibility. That's just brake jobs. I always tell people I could find other issues once I do a full teardown because of the rust and corrosion issues. That vehicle is not safe even after the brakes are done.

Should’ve known it was possible caliper when driving around the car realizing it was getting stuck. 😅

if its stuck can you break it free by pressing the brake pedal? if you can get the slide pins out you can most likely clean it up, no? lubricated c-clamp is what i use, i feel like that has more leverage than your thingy

I would have cleaned my car out before the mechanic worked and filmed it! But I have my car pretty cleaned inside. A lot of rust unfortunately that’s what happens in cold climate to cars!

Its a tough call. You could have retracted the calipers with a flathead like you said and that probably would have been ideal but then you would also need to get in and pump the brakes afterwards to reseat the pads every time you do diagnosis because otherwise you risk the customer getting in the vehicle and rolling the car through the neighbors house if the repair isn't done the same day for whatever reason. 😆😆

You should charge list price on these parts to cover the losses associated with unforeseen associated failures. If no collateral issues, credit them some money back at the end. Everyone is better off

A good sign that a caliper is bad is when you only see one side of the rotor is grooved I knew right away after seeing the rotor that the caliper probably was going to bad never know till you go to press it.

Every try to push the caliper out first (with your foot on the brake) and then push it back in? You can exert a lot more force on it that way and maybe break it loose.
