      It’s not in the books, not even the appendices as the other charlatan who commented implies. However, due to Tolkien’s looseness with details, it COULD have happened. The film is taking obvious liberties, but it isn’t exactly defying canon.

      I also like the difference in how Saruman and Elrond defeat the ringwraiths.
      Saruman, like Gandalf and Sauron, is a Maia - an angel. The Maiar are immortal beings that exist outside the world, and incarnate into it. At the dawn of time they sung reality into existence alongside the gods themselves. They cannot be harmed, only banished or bound. They possess world-shaping magic. Of course he can easily overpower the Nazgul - ghosts of mortal men, borrowing a fraction of Sauron's power.
      But how does Elrond, an unaging but ultimately still mortal being, defeat them? Simply by being a better warrior.

      At this time, Saruman was already corrupted, he wasn't already a servant of Sauron, but he wanted to find the One Ring for himself, and use in his mind, use his power to destroy Sauron and rule the Middle Earth because, like Sauron, he thought that the mortals were too much chaotic and stupid to rule themselves
      When Gandalf warnend the council for the first time about Sauron presence, Saruman stopped the council to intervene, that because he thought that if Sauron was keep in peace, the One Ring would have manifested by himself to rejoin with his master, and then, Saruman would have done his move and take the ring for himself
      Said that, Saruman was never evil from the beginning, he was a Maiar that originally believed in his mission, but at a certain point, let his pride and arrogance permit the darkness to corrupt his mind, and he became like Sauron in the intentions to rule the world like a God

    You can really see and hear the pain in Sauron whenever Galadriel is mentioning his old names/nicknames/aliases in mockery of his past evil deeds. Like the servant of Morgoth (mockery of being a slave of the first Dark Lor) Nameless (mockery of changing and blaspheming his ancient divine name), Faceless (mockery of his beautiful image), and formless (in mockery of staining his beautiful image). Then finally, banishing him back to the void from whence he came (a mockery of choosing Morgoth's side over his kin).

      Sauron (and all Maiar) are shapeshifters, although after being destroyed by Eru in the destruction of Numenor he could not longer take any fair forms, and lacking the ring he lacked the ability to take any physical form at all. Galadriel is definitely mocking him for these reasons.

  • @LordSiravant
    @LordSiravant 6 місяців тому +711

    Bear in mind, this is when Sauron and his Nazgul are all at their WEAKEST, and the White Council had the Great Rings with them, and they STILL barely held off the Dark Lord and his servants. This is why everyone knew that Sauron regaining the Ring would guarantee his victory; he would be unstoppable if he got it back, as he'd had the last 3000 years to restore his body and gather his armies. He didn't even NEED the Ring to win.

    • @mariannecaranto619
      @mariannecaranto619 6 місяців тому +46

      Same thoughts, which kinda makes isildur (basing from LOTR movies) a big deal cause he managed to take the ring off by cutting off sauron's finger. I was just wondering how a mere man could do that when elves and wizards are having a hard time fending sauron off in his weakest state and without his ring.

    • @LordSiravant
      @LordSiravant 6 місяців тому +98

      @@mariannecaranto619 A discrepancy between the movies and the books. In the books, Sauron was still not fully recovered from the Sinking of Numenor, and thus didn't face the Last Alliance until he had no choice. And even then he tussled with the combined might of Elendil, Gil-Galad, Isildur, and Elrond and successfully killed the two strongest of their party before he was himself defeated. Only after Sauron's defeat did Isildur cut the Ring off Sauron's hand, which caused Sauron to abandon his body entirely. Despite not being at his full strength even then, Sauron still took on four of the strongest warriors of the time at once and killed the two strongest of them before his own power gave out.

      Read the comments about her that I’m posting or the replies I’m giving to other comments. Don’t underestimate her. Even Tolkien stated to not do that and anyone that’s speaking ill of her or showing distrust of her says more about them then it does about her.

    • @Makkaru112
      @Makkaru112 6 місяців тому +40

      The Peter Jackson movies are masterpieces but they do Isildur some injustice. In the books, while he later ‘succumbs’, he spends his time being a fair ruler who practically gave power away to the people instead of being power hungry. He comes to realize that he is not powerful enough to truly bend the ring to his will. That it will eventually overcome him. Isildur resolves to give the ring to Elrond but is killed on the way to Rivendel. It's a tragic story of a man that tries to right his wrong but ultimately fails.
      In the books isildur literally repented and was about to bring the ring to Rivendell and apologize as he recognized it was beyond him even for a great numenorean connected to the faithful line of the mighty Elendil
      I preface the prologue & war, other depictions I LOVE, captured the themes WELL, the vibe of the whole trilogy! The significance of the duel between Elendil & Sauron was Nerffed; (He wasn’t some random old bloke in armour getting smacked around) This man was MIGHTY and gleaming with power which you’ll find out in the great videos you’ll soon react to with joy!
      * He and Gil-Galad; last true Elven King battled Sauron and slayed Sauron’s physical body and both died in the process. GilGalad was held high by the face for all free peoples to see as he then incinerated his bodily form to a crisp of ash! Isildur was part of the fight too but not as prominently and he just comes up to the body to cut the ring finger off and…. So one example is how easily Sauron is killed in the intro.
      * He's set up as this super powered badass, but all you have to do is cut off his finger? That's not how it went down in the book, where the greatest man-king and the greatest elven-king had to double-team Sauron to strike down his body, but were killed in the effort (Isildur then cuts the ring from the corpse).
      Especially for elves the title of king has many meanings & by the Third Age there isn’t a population large enough to even attempt to such a thing as creating a unified kingdom which would put a target on their backs, let alone many of them are beyond all of that anyway as it’s seen as doing more harm than anything good.
      * They also seen what happened when the elves fell upon the swords of their own hubris and passion no matter if it was for the right reasons some of the time. That it always ended up in some sort of tragedy which sometimes even damaged the earth itself.
      They had long known about what’s called the Long Defeat as ever since Morgoth’s marring of the land itself; pouring his remnants into it that caused the “magic” to slowly drain away from the land itself which is sad because for ages several clans of elves were born there. even the greatest ancestors were “born” in middle earth awakening to the stars !
      Many of who are left have accepted the next phase of their life which is to become councillors, healers and loremasters to those within the heart to listen and the desire to learn. But above all the guardians and custodians of several things and the world itself for as long as they can remain!❤ The elves “exist” as long as the world does. And Tolkien made it obvious in many ways that it’s our world as he restored Anglo Saxon culture/Mythologies and folklore, and their languages too alongside Irish, Welsh and Finnish mythologies too. Especially Norwegian(of which I am)
      This is what Amazon didn’t deliver (AKA the actual story which inspired everything we love into existence with games and movies and books and so forth. Skyrim, elder scrolls, oblivion, Diablo, and world of Warcraft and D&D. And Game Of Thrones was hugely inspired by Tolkien… yet as the godfather of everything and the heart of what caused many peoples lives to be saved cannot get the justice it deserves for adaptations? People literally conquered cancer because of the books and the trilogy, the books were read to their children for years. All 25 of them. The man was a hugely respected scholar and professor in the world. Translated ancient artifacts and hieroglyphs and petroglyphs and so forth for the government etc. even rejected being recruited into the CIA several times and he wrote everyone by letter. The fans especially. He’d write back to everyone back and forth and many have shared the stories regarding these conversations which were past down throughout the family lines of the people who had a personal relationship with Tolkien which was hundreds of people when he was alive. Thousands.

    • @Prander5x5

      I think it's a matter of how the fans of the book saw the Hobbit as a simple, charming, yet enchanting story that started the whole fantasy genre and they really wanted to see it done justice on film. The book is actually not that long, but has a great story told simply. That's really all they hoped for. You say films have gotten worse, but in 2012 it was well under way how 'big cinema production' was chewing up all these franchises into a mash up of special effects, over-written scenes and unlikely sequences, involving well known characters that had already been thoroughly established, in this case, by Tolkien himself. This argument will never be settled between die hard fans and present day pop corn munchers. One side wants a good story, the other side wants it 'cool' and people end up arguing and someone gets called 'boomer' and there you go. The problem is what they (Hollywood) DO with the source material these days, and how they change it in ways that completely alter how it was established for decades. Think Bey Transformers and the like. Now, is the Hobbit cool and awesome and even fun? Sure. But it's way overdone. That's the nicest thing I can say about it. Thorin standing on Smaug's snout?!?! The Barrel sequence?!?!? Ugh. Anyway, what surprises me is that people have argued there's nothing wrong with this and in the same breath say they never read the book. And that's the point. THIS Hobbot was made for cinema, not for story. That's all there is to it. What's wrong with that? Nothing, I guess. But die hard fans asked 'why did it have to happen to the Hobbit too?' and popcorn munchers said 'why not?' and here we are. I like to think I'm not wrong in saying for the last 20 years Hollywood has beeon doing this, substituting 'substance' for bells and whistles, and only because they want to sell huge amounts of tickets in a short amount of time. And they suceed, because it's 'cool'. That kind of entertainment is not story telling or character growth. It's ONLY 'cool'. As for me, I say this because personally I hate this fucking movie with a passion for what it did to a story I love...but I still watch some of the 'cool' scenes on youtube don't I?

      saruman has long been corrupted at that point. he was sabotaging the white council. they could have known way earlier, that the necromancer was sauron, but sarum manipulated gandalf. they could have known it centuries earlier.
      Saruman's corruption already began before he left valinor, because of his envy to gandalf, who was originally chosen to be the leader of the istari, but gandalf declined, because he feared sauron. the true process of the corruption then started, when cirdan gave gandalf the ring of fire. saruman was always obsessed with power.

More likely, as the bearer of the last natural light of Earendil and the Three Silmarils left in Middle-Earth, she was being drained the most by the Darkness present in the Nazgul and the Necromancer. It's worth noting that canonically Narya (Gandalf's ring) was the only one of the Three Elven Rings that was much for offensive use, as both Nenya (Galadriel's ring) and Vilya (Elrond's ring) were both much more defensive. (Though even then, technically as Narya was originally Cirdan's ring, it was also used to create the Grey Havens.)

    There's a lot of valid criticism to be had of this scene, but leaving that aside, I think this represents very well something that mey be lost to those who didn't read the Silmarillion or other works that discuss the first and second ages, which is how powerful the beings in this scene are. Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast and Sauron are all Maiar, immortal angelic beings born from the mind of Illúvatar before time. Galadriel is among the oldest elves in Middle Earth and one of the few who saw the light of the trees in Valinor. She saw all the events from the darkening of Valinor, to the Oath of the sons of Fëanor, she crossed the Helcaraxë with the kin of Fingolfin, she saw the War of the Jewels, the War of Wrath, she was present during Sauron's rise and fall during the second age and she was regarded as one of the most powerful (and beatiful) of all the elves. Finally, Elrond Half-Elven is the Son of Eärendil the Mariner, one of the greatest elves to ever live, who killed Ancalagon the Black, the first and most powerful of the winged dragons. He is a descendant of Beren and Lúthien, the first union of Elves and Men. Also, since Lúthien was the daughter of Thingol and Melian (a Maia), he had Maia blood in him, meaning that he was descendant from a literal angelic being. He was a child during the Sacking of Beleriand, and was kidnapped by Maglor, son of Fëanor, and raised by him, along with his brother Elros (who became the first king of Númenor, and was an ancestor to Isildur and also Aragorn). He was alive during the War of Wrath, though he didn't take par in it. During the second age, he lived with Gil-galad and was one of the major players in the war of the Elves and Sauron and later in the War of the Last Aliance. Basically, everyone in this scene is absurdly powerful and on a completely different scale than everyone else in Middle Earth. The only other characters present in Middle Earth that could be even slighly compared to them were Glorfindel (hero of Gondolin in the first age, revived and came back to Middle Earth), Celeborn (husband of Galadriel) and Círdan the Shipwright (the oldest elf in Middle Earth and among the oldest elves we know of)

      Even though Gandalf had no evidence that the blade came from the tomb, Saruman should have considered sending a party to investigate it.

      Galadriel didn't trust Saruman from the moment he was sent to middle earth, remember that both Sauron and Saruman were apprentices of Aule along with Faenor, Galadriel sensed something dark within Saruman and wanted Mithrandir to be leader of the white council but he turned it down on account of his humility.

    One thing. Elrond is like a level 24 warrior. And dude is attacking 3/4 times per round. Prob has a 30-40% chance to critical hit his opponents with each attack. He's got on magical armor, rings, the ringlet, bracers, boots, belt, etc. He's using a +5 sword of sharpness. And it takes homeboy at least three dozen attacks to dispel a few ringwraiths... How the F does Aragorn do this with a bastard sword (it wasn't Narsil yet!) and a torch?

    • @Ankhakaru
      @Ankhakaru 6 місяців тому +9

      Because Aragorn is a Numenorean. Even if Elrond had no gear and was just himself with a basic sword he himself is a "Magical" being just like Aragorn so their attacks are magical. That's the only way I've ever been able to reason it. As for fire- well it's fire 😅

She was born in Elf heaven, with all the power of an angel that implies, and unlike the Wizards she's kind of loopholed herself into being allowed on Middle-Earth. Banishing Sauron with such a blunt display can be considered crossing a moral line, so she herself looks like a specter due to the whole 'evil makes you ill' thing.

    I love that at least in a few moments of the battle, it’s not just one of the wraiths attacking at a time, it’s multiple, while Elrond and Saruman are dodging, and executing attacks of their own. It feels like a real, high stakes badass fight.

    I know it’s not in the books of hobbit. But I must say that I love to see how the Istari (in the movies just Gandalf and Saruman) actually fight with their powers of light and magic-kinesis. The little fight between G & S in the LOTR books and movies is nothing against this scene (Clash of immortals) where Saruman uses his powers to fight Sauron and the Nazguls & the one in the second movie in which Gandalf uses the light shield of the Istari to fight against Sauron himself. It’s incredible to see some actual powerful magic on screen in this universe 😍🫶

    What I love about LOTR is the subtlety of magic. It never was in your face, theatrical huge displays of power. The elder elves, Saruman, Gandalf, and Sauron wielded immense power, but never displayed it overtly, except when absolutely needed and in different forms. Gandalf with his pipe weed and light shows or speaking in tongues with animals, Galadriel in keeping Lothlorien untouched and guarded and Sauron to bend minds and corrupt men.
