Uploading this so somebody can enlighten me - this was not in the books at all, amiright? This "necromancer" aka Sauron, fighting ghosts etc... It's just a reference for LOTR, right?

It’s not in the books, not even the appendices as the other charlatan who commented implies. However, due to Tolkien’s looseness with details, it COULD have happened. The film is taking obvious liberties, but it isn’t exactly defying canon.

I'm so glad Christopher Lee got to do these scenes. To show that Sarumon was not always evil, in fact, he was a badass. He was simply corrupt by the time of Lord of the Rings.

    • @CreeperZone

At this time, Saruman was already corrupted, he wasn't already a servant of Sauron, but he wanted to find the One Ring for himself, and use in his mind, use his power to destroy Sauron and rule the Middle Earth because, like Sauron, he thought that the mortals were too much chaotic and stupid to rule themselves
When Gandalf warnend the council for the first time about Sauron presence, Saruman stopped the council to intervene, that because he thought that if Sauron was keep in peace, the One Ring would have manifested by himself to rejoin with his master, and then, Saruman would have done his move and take the ring for himself
Said that, Saruman was never evil from the beginning, he was a Maiar that originally believed in his mission, but at a certain point, let his pride and arrogance permit the darkness to corrupt his mind, and he became like Sauron in the intentions to rule the world like a God

I also like the difference in how Saruman and Elrond defeat the ringwraiths.
Saruman, like Gandalf and Sauron, is a Maia - an angel. The Maiar are immortal beings that exist outside the world, and incarnate into it. At the dawn of time they sung reality into existence alongside the gods themselves. They cannot be harmed, only banished or bound. They possess world-shaping magic. Of course he can easily overpower the Nazgul - ghosts of mortal men, borrowing a fraction of Sauron's power.
But how does Elrond, an unaging but ultimately still mortal being, defeat them? Simply by being a better warrior.

Her characterization is so well done here it's insane. No idle boasting. She means every word she says. Almost like every word holds power in itself. She is powerful but doesn't pretend to be all powerful and above help. She is a leader who inspires confidence in others to take action and to be the best they can possibly be. There is a sense of earned confidence that Cate Blanchett portrays so well.
Even at her most powerful. She is depicted to be emotionally complex. Not over confident and stand offish. The green goblin or change in Galadriel's appearance is showing that she is actually mentally heading in the direction of Sauron at this point in her history. Her own appearance starts to warp and her beauty fades while mocking Sauron for succumbing to the same fate. She is basically projecting and also trying to confront her own insecurities about the path she is taking. Galadriel can't just manifest her power like it's a toy. It takes a physical and emotional toll on her. She literally collapses as if to prepare to enter into a trance to allow her to repel Sauron. And she can only due this due to having faith in the people around her.
There are so many layers here. Peter Jackson did something in a 5 minute scene that entire movies barely achieve. The hobbit movies had issues but it mainly came from bloat. There was still a lot of good.

Youre right on the money - words themselves actually do hold special magical power. It's literally a battle of wills. When she says those things to Sauron, she isn't just insulting him, she's speaking those statements into reality itself. For example, the words "you have no power here" literally prevents Sauron from overpowering her. It literally stops or weakens his power in that moment. The same thing happens with the Balrog in Fellowship. Gandalf is magically commanding the balrog not to step forward, but because the Balrog is equally powerful, Gandalf doesn't just outright win on the bridge. This reflects back to Tolkiens love of language and how he wrote the story - and it's magic system - around the languages he invented and language itself.

Which I'm assuming he got the idea from the Bible as God spoke reality into existence. God said let there be light and it was so. There's definitely some otherworldly inspiration to these stories because the layers are so deep it's beyond most men's imaginations. Jmo tho lol

Bear in mind, this is when Sauron and his Nazgul are all at their WEAKEST, and the White Council had the Great Rings with them, and they STILL barely held off the Dark Lord and his servants. This is why everyone knew that Sauron regaining the Ring would guarantee his victory; he would be unstoppable if he got it back, as he'd had the last 3000 years to restore his body and gather his armies. He didn't even NEED the Ring to win.

Same thoughts, which kinda makes isildur (basing from LOTR movies) a big deal cause he managed to take the ring off by cutting off sauron's finger. I was just wondering how a mere man could do that when elves and wizards are having a hard time fending sauron off in his weakest state and without his ring.

@@mariannecaranto619 A discrepancy between the movies and the books. In the books, Sauron was still not fully recovered from the Sinking of Numenor, and thus didn't face the Last Alliance until he had no choice. And even then he tussled with the combined might of Elendil, Gil-Galad, Isildur, and Elrond and successfully killed the two strongest of their party before he was himself defeated. Only after Sauron's defeat did Isildur cut the Ring off Sauron's hand, which caused Sauron to abandon his body entirely. Despite not being at his full strength even then, Sauron still took on four of the strongest warriors of the time at once and killed the two strongest of them before his own power gave out.

    • @Makkaru112
      @Makkaru112 11 місяців тому +97

The Peter Jackson movies are masterpieces but they do Isildur some injustice. In the books, while he later ‘succumbs’, he spends his time being a fair ruler who practically gave power away to the people instead of being power hungry. He comes to realize that he is not powerful enough to truly bend the ring to his will. That it will eventually overcome him. Isildur resolves to give the ring to Elrond but is killed on the way to Rivendel. It's a tragic story of a man that tries to right his wrong but ultimately fails.
In the books isildur literally repented and was about to bring the ring to Rivendell and apologize as he recognized it was beyond him even for a great numenorean connected to the faithful line of the mighty Elendil
I preface the prologue & war, other depictions I LOVE, captured the themes WELL, the vibe of the whole trilogy! The significance of the duel between Elendil & Sauron was Nerffed; (He wasn’t some random old bloke in armour getting smacked around) This man was MIGHTY and gleaming with power which you’ll find out in the great videos you’ll soon react to with joy!
      * He and Gil-Galad; last true Elven King battled Sauron and slayed Sauron’s physical body and both died in the process. GilGalad was held high by the face for all free peoples to see as he then incinerated his bodily form to a crisp of ash! Isildur was part of the fight too but not as prominently and he just comes up to the body to cut the ring finger off and…. So one example is how easily Sauron is killed in the intro.
      * He's set up as this super powered badass, but all you have to do is cut off his finger? That's not how it went down in the book, where the greatest man-king and the greatest elven-king had to double-team Sauron to strike down his body, but were killed in the effort (Isildur then cuts the ring from the corpse).
Especially for elves the title of king has many meanings & by the Third Age there isn’t a population large enough to even attempt to such a thing as creating a unified kingdom which would put a target on their backs, let alone many of them are beyond all of that anyway as it’s seen as doing more harm than anything good.
      * They also seen what happened when the elves fell upon the swords of their own hubris and passion no matter if it was for the right reasons some of the time. That it always ended up in some sort of tragedy which sometimes even damaged the earth itself.
They had long known about what’s called the Long Defeat as ever since Morgoth’s marring of the land itself; pouring his remnants into it that caused the “magic” to slowly drain away from the land itself which is sad because for ages several clans of elves were born there. even the greatest ancestors were “born” in middle earth awakening to the stars !
Many of who are left have accepted the next phase of their life which is to become councillors, healers and loremasters to those within the heart to listen and the desire to learn. But above all the guardians and custodians of several things and the world itself for as long as they can remain!❤ The elves “exist” as long as the world does. And Tolkien made it obvious in many ways that it’s our world as he restored Anglo Saxon culture/Mythologies and folklore, and their languages too alongside Irish, Welsh and Finnish mythologies too. Especially Norwegian(of which I am)
This is what Amazon didn’t deliver (AKA the actual story which inspired everything we love into existence with games and movies and books and so forth. Skyrim, elder scrolls, oblivion, Diablo, and world of Warcraft and D&D. And Game Of Thrones was hugely inspired by Tolkien… yet as the godfather of everything and the heart of what caused many peoples lives to be saved cannot get the justice it deserves for adaptations? People literally conquered cancer because of the books and the trilogy, the books were read to their children for years. All 25 of them. The man was a hugely respected scholar and professor in the world. Translated ancient artifacts and hieroglyphs and petroglyphs and so forth for the government etc. even rejected being recruited into the CIA several times and he wrote everyone by letter. The fans especially. He’d write back to everyone back and forth and many have shared the stories regarding these conversations which were past down throughout the family lines of the people who had a personal relationship with Tolkien which was hundreds of people when he was alive. Thousands.

Valar didn't send Istari to outright destroy (or banish since Maia don't die) Sauron, but to guide mortals to do it themselves, which means that Saruman had that restriction on top, and resentment caused by that and many other factors piling up is what caused him to turn. At the end, his envy would definitely make him try to overthrow Sauron, and probably fail yes, but if he's not restricted by the Valar, it's definitely a close fight for Sauron against any Maia, and I wouldn't say that Sauron was his superior in every way, that's just not true for the Maia, they are designed to be close to each other in power, in order to balance the powers of Valar. And lastly, he wasn't chosen as the leader of Istar for no reason. Also chosen to defend elfs against Morgoth when they awakened. The fact is that he's been Valar's top choice multiple times.

There's good renditions on YT here, I'm sure you'll find it interesting as a "type" of magic battle, especially when you also know about how Tolkien imagined the shaping of the world in the song of the Valar.

    • @chaosh7040

That wasn't Jackson...that was Tolkien himself that clarified Gandalf left them at the edges of Mirkwood at that point to go check out the threat (that he wasn't sure what it was at the time) in southern Mirkwood.
(Note: LOTR reference...not in the Hobbit...but definitely Tolkien).
He even mentioned that Saruman (before he changed sides) Elrond & Galadriel were involved but it's been a ling time since i read the reference I forget the details...
But it was definitely Tolkien not a Jackson adlib.

Look at how dismissive he is when Gandalf reveals the Morgul Blade to him. A dagger, I remind you, that was burried in a tomb deep underground.
Even Elrond was shocked to see it, saying that powerfull enchantments(or whatever they are) had been cast on the tombs to leep them from being opened.
Even though Gandalf had no evidence that the blade came from the tomb, Saruman should have considered sending a party to investigate it.

If anyone is wondering what Sauron is saying to Galadriel while she is trying to banish him, starting at “you have no power here” while there are no ways to fully translate it as it’s uncertain what form of black speech it is cause there were several forms, if we take it as pure black speech, some words you get are “no sorcery” “coward” “city besieged by army” and “almighty” now if you try and piece this together, one of my first thoughts was that he is trying to scare and insult her by stating that no sorcery can protect her from him, that she is a coward and her city will be besieged and destroyed by him for he is almighty, though you could make it mean other things such as when he besieged and destroyed the Kingdom of Eregion, that her sorcery could not protect her, she was a coward for running from the city, and that he besieged and destroyed the city for he is all powerful, but it’s all on interpretation at that point as we don’t fully know anyway, hope you guys enjoy that bit of knowledge!

Technically, yes, but the first time he and Gandalf fought he told him that he just didn't see any other option than to side with Sauron. He basically chose to save himself over others. Most people would probably do the same. It was only such a bad thing because it was totally uncharacteristic of a wizard of any ranking to do something like that. But at the end of this scene I think he was talking about going after Sauron to finish him off, and the others didn't think it was necessary. So maybe it was just that since he'd already fought with them to defeat him once while they had the chance, he just didn't even think it was possible the second time around.

Also in appendix B in the timeline section it says " The White Council meets; Saurman agrees to an attack on Dol Guldur since he now wishes to prevent Sauron from searching the river. Sauron having made plans abandons Dol Guldur." In the last chapter of the Silmarillion titled Of the rings of power and the third age: it also talks about this in more detail but seems to state that it was Saurman not Galadriel who drove Sauron from Dol Guldur because he was the most powerful of the wizards (which are Maiar) and more powerful then elves and he had studied the ring lore and it's power more then anyone. indeed it states that in the end he saw Sauron more as a rival and envied him more than hated his works. : I encourage all fans of Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit to get the Silmarillion and read it! but it still propagades, the stupid "sauron does not have a body" bullshit. saruon had a body at that time. he had a body for centuries at that point.

"If you try to stop me, I will destroy you". She says this being like : "it's rainy, have you noticed ?"
Amazing Cate Blanchett playing amazing lady of light. Love this scene.

As a fan of the Tolkein UNIVERSE, not just books or movies or what have you, I enjoyed this scene. It's like a faint echo or fragment of the divine scale battles that were fought between gods in the First Age (Silmarillion), and 2:11 shows that it's taking place in a dark, forgotten corner of the world so no one will know about this battle, except these godlings.

Whole agree, isn't canon but is MORE CANON THAN SOME CANON SCENES.
