Vesper Peak, North Cascades - Washington State

Vesper Peak, with its massive granite walls has become popular with technical rock climbers and adventuresome hikers looking for a spectacular mountain vista. The trail gains over 4000 feet in elevation in three miles and includes sections that traverse over boulders and scree. The terrain above the tree line is more reminiscent of the Rocky Mountains than the Cascades, with barren rock faces between towering cliffs. Some hikers stop at lake Elan just above Headlee Pass, but for those with scrambling and route-finding skills, continuing to the summit is well worth the extra effort.

Wonderful drone shots. A whole new perspective on a peak I’ve visit about 10 times. Love the avalanched snow blocks. The view down to Copper Lake below Big 4 is always spectacular. I’ve never seen climbers on the north slabs. I’ve been up on telemark skis, descending back down from Headlee Pass was a chore. 40 years ago much of the trail wasn’t obvious.

I know an older gentleman who climbed up this peak and got some garnets. He's passed away, he climbed it in the early 70's, with a friend. Do you know where he might have been able to find garnets on that trek?
