I think NT would've been better as an OVA series covering the trio's life in sequence, rather than jumping about constantly. I would've liked to know more about their characters and motivations, as well as more about Newtype research in general. Could've been interesting to see the whole of early UC from another angle.

I feel like the story of Gundam NT was poorly executed. The pacing of the movie makes understanding some of the ideas and concepts brought up in certain parts difficult, especially when the story seems to be jumping from plot-point to plot-point frequently. Also it seems more like a "Newtype Ex Machina" kind of story, than a story that focuses on anti-war themes, and coming to understand one another as human beings with the Newtype elements being there to support those themes.

When it comes to the phenex. It comes off as a confusing subject. As it comes down not to the machine itself, but the powers of Rita..............................................................As a first note, I have to make a note of this. But in the movie, they do not state the idea that the phenex has been sent through time to enact its purpose. Rather they state that the phenex simply disappeared from the earth sphere for those years after the freak test flight incident. (Which is completely more plausible if you watch the ending scene of the film, where we llearn of its power to travel at the speed of light. As stated by banagher.) meaning that most likely Rita’s consciousness (which was absorbed into the phenex’s psyco-frame) has taken the machine to a place where it can lay in wait (far from the reaches of mankind, until the day it is needed).........................................................................As for why the phenex is doing what it is doing, you have to look at Rita. As a character, Rita is in fact a very uncommon sight when it comes to newtypes. Her abilities in clairvoyance make her one of the youngest newtypes with to have such strong powers like hers. Comparable to only maybe Lalah Sune. Not to mention that she was born with them (as elaborated in past Gundam series, pure bred newtypes are tremendously more powerful than cyber-newtypes.) this gives her a much stronger grasp of future events........................................................Being able to predict the colony drop is one thing, however the real interesting thing to note is her behaviour after those events occurred and the three was put into the newtype research facility. If you look at how she acts around the other two, you’ll notice that it seems her ability to see the future still seems to be occurring within her mind, and when the three are split up and she is taken away. She gives Jona a forgiving look of “I know it’s not your fault. I’m sorry, but I unfortunately HAVE to do this. Because this needs to happen if we are going to be able to overcome this.”. Finally at the end of the film. (In Yona’s final vision of the three of them at the site of the colony drop) Rita does reveal what’s been going on. “I’m so sorry. But I knew it would take all three of us to stop that thing. She foresaw the threat of the Neo Zeong II. Jona even makes note of this with his reaction to that statement. As for the wings, they appear from the phenex to do what needed to be done. Humanity was not ready for the power that the Neo Zeong possessed (they even state that the technology within the Neo Zeong (most likely the powers of it’s psyco-shard ring) is not meant for humanity possess at this moment in time). So using the wings and the clouds of psyco-frame shards. The phenex sent the machines remains and the technology back to where they came from. Which was the final sealing act to end the threat of the Neo Zeong for good. (As even though banagher destroyed the first one. He only managed to do just that. Destroy it. What he was not able to do, was remove it entirely. As Zeon was able to rebuild it into the Neo Zeong II and recreate the technology within it and was able to unleash it again.)

Alright, the Unicorn time travel sequence:
Am I the only one who got what was happening? It's such an important scene to help make sense of newtypes it saddens me that a lot of people didn't understand, but I'll try my best to explain.
The Neo-Zeong was (according to Narrative) the machine which had experimental tech based on psycho-frame technology which caused the "time travel scene" in Unicorn. But it's not time travel. What it did was that it projected what Banagher and Frontal both knew, both felt. And that's something which is INCREDIBLY important to understand in order to... understand newtypes.
That they can instinctively feel the inevitable cold dark heat death of the universe. Their hearts are capable of understanding others, like Haman and Kamille in Zeta - but it comes at the cost of knowing too much. It goes beyond humanity, the understanding goes "Beyond the Time". Frontal spells it out for us, that newtypes can see the inevitable end of the universe. That cold darkness infests their hearts and it's what creates the emotionally disturbed newtypes we keep seeing in UC.
But some choose to go beyond that. There will always be men like Frontal and Scirocco who tap into that energy source and try to live in the moment instead of even attempting to fix what end awaits them. They choose to live good lives at the cost of others, using their understanding as a weapon.
While people like Amuro and Banagher try to see the light of the human heart, say "even so" at seeing that darkness because at the end of the day... human will can defeat inevitability. And even if it couldn't, mankind should try anyway. It's what causes Axis to divert its course. It's what blocks the colony laser. It's what saves Jona.
It's... It's a battle between accepting the darkness and trying to overcome it. Perfectly illustrated in "Over the Rainbow" through the literal light of Banagher's heart lighting up the darkness at the end of the universe's lifespan - attracting Casval, Lalah and Amuro. And that warmth confuses Frontal, but he accepts it. Because the vengeful spirit of Char which possessed him is finally reunited with the part of him that passed on in CCA, making him whole. Allowing him passage to a world beyond time with the rest.

UC attempted to reinvent what it means to be a true newtype. No longer about who was born with more potential but by who has a set of characteristics, never be close-minded, acknowledging sadness, being responsible for one's self and those around them, seeing with eyes unclouded by hate, and to be hopeful. These are all the lessons Banagher had learnt from Daguza, Zinnerman, Marida, Mineva and more, this is how he becomes a perfect newtype. "This light isn't only coming from the two of us." " I know that, it's coming from everyone." While Banagher and rhidde where the ones who controlled the gundams, that didn't mean that they were solely responsible for the lazer block, everyone did it together, the same way amuro did with all the people of earth.
Look at Unicorn thematically, It always says, "The power to transcend the now, the inner god called possibility." we hear this over and over again. Newtypes have no set rules, humanity has no set limits, if humanity were to understand one another they could overcome anything and if they can over come anything, they can overcome the hatred that plagued the UC for the past 1 hundred years, that is the meaning behind the colony lazer block.
I don't think blocking the colony laser is anywhere near as impressive as reverting a rock the size of axis off it's course, A colony laser hitting the earth wouldn't cause a nuclear winter. Try not to forget about Unicorn's story by being distracted by the physical, that's the hardest thing gundam fans must overcome to truely understand Unicorn. Zoltan in NT was used to tell that to the viewers as well, "The only thing that oldtypes understand is physical phenomena! Even when they witness a miracle, They dont even try to understand its true essence!"

TSOMcrew I agree with what you’re saying. With the reason it wasn’t just Banagher and Ensign Riddhe doing the work load. As char’s counterattack establishes, the psyco-frame is capable of linking the minds and wills of everyone present. Not just the pilots. It was the resonance created between Amuro and Char’s machines which initiated the events of the axis shock. The resonance from the psyco-frames is what began to psychically draw the other pilots and suits around towards the two of them......... as another note. Unfortunately I must bring up the finales of both Zeta and ZZ. As shown. In the endings of both series, it is displayed that newtypes can gain an incredible power boost when hearts and minds are connected to the spirits of friends and loved ones (Alice or dead) and if we apply that logic and knowledge of this to unicorn, you’ll realize it wasn’t just the two unicorn pilots performing this feat. You had every one present lending what strengths they had to the cause of protecting megallanica from the colony laser. Banagher and riddhe were simply the ones holding the gates.

@@jeff3221 thats why Zoltan is the villain, he's methods are flawed but his intentions to show the meaning behind human potential just like Banagher and the rest.
Zoltan is frustrated with people who don't try to understand the Axis Shock or the colony lazer block (non lethal feats) that he wanted to show them through pain and fear. Which obviously is not a good way to go about it.
Zoltan is writen to show that there is a justification for the fear of newtypes and that psychoframe could very well be used for the detriment of mankind, thats why NT ends off with the phenex fixing everything. Because in the end we must not forget the good that can come from within humanity.
Execution is dodgy but thematically it checks out.

I understand where you are coming from with the ending of Unicorn, but it doesn't really cheapen the Axis Shock. On one hand you have one Newtype and his semi plated psycoframe Mobile Suit resonating with the will of humanity to survive and make peace. On the other you have two specialized fully psychoframe Mobile Suits with programs built to both target and interact with newtypes working with two mostly capable Newtypes who combine their will to protect something they love very much, Mineva. I think they actually set this up throughout the Unicorn series by making ENDLESS monologues about "possibility" and everyone searching for a reason to fight and carry on. Like I said though, totally understand where you are coming from.

  • @danielludwig647

Newtypes can "see through time", according to lines from Amuro in the original Gundam 0079, as he's going through the psychic experience of Lalah's death. And Zeta, as only the second entry, early established Char and Amuro haunted by the dead and their past, even somewhat metaphorically. Kamille just made that literal with the summoning of the dead at the end.
I appreciate that NT took these simple building blocks from the earliest Gundam series and then reconfigured them into something that felt like an extreme, albiet explainable, extrapolation of what could be done with those tools.
It didn't feel very earned with Unicorn given some poor setup and payoff for the ending, though it at least attempted to establish the psychoframe as a paranormal Chekhov's gun. That said, I DO respect that NT boldly owned the asspull ending of Unicorn and said "yes, and" to all the other ghostly newtype stuff that came before. It's not a great movie (I think it's good, but has significant pacing issues and jumps around in time too much), but I gotta give it credit for encouraging audience buy-in for the fans who followed the franchise up until that point. It shattered my disbelief on what was "possible" in the fantastical elements in the franchise, and made me excited to see what they might try in the future.
I also gotta admit, it made me hungry for a proper Unicorn sequel, when I thought I was totally done with that story and more-or-less satisfied with what we got. Establishing Mineva and Co. as a faction with an agenda in their own right was a good plot hook.

I understand what you're saying about Unicorn's ending, but I don't agree with it. Unicorn's ending does have symbolism that falls more in line with another theme Gundam, especially UC has always had. A romanticized take on Mankind's evolution. Banagher and Riddhe being able to stop the Colony Laser was symbolic of humanity, when embracing the hope for a future that benefits everyone can grow to achieve things that others may not think possible. Banagher also did have newtype training since he was a child, so he's also, most likely the most powerful newtype in UC at that point.
Also, the "time travel" thing was more like poor wording on Fukui's part. It's more like time manipulation. Also this doesn't change the fact that Unicorn and the Neo Zeong "traveling through time" was just an art-house representation of their metaphysical selves travelling through time, not them inside their mobile suits.

ZZ had a problem in that Tomino was basically under orders from Sunrise to lighten the mood. He did for the first part hence why ZZ is hard to watch. Basically you have most of AEUG wiped out, and EFSF in shambles and the second coming of Zeon invading yet he was ordered to lighten the mood. Tomino did the best he could. Victory Gundam is where he lost it as the merger of Bandai (the cause of most of Gundams issues as they made demands on script changes for toy sales) forced him to make changes that ruined it, and he began to add things out of spite like bikini clad soldiers, and two wheeled land battleships and then kill most of the protagonist team off again like Zeta. Tomino still begs people to not watch Victory Gundam.

Unicorn makes sense when you realize the Full Psychoframe acts as an amplifier of the Newtype phenomenon. Also it did involve others viewing the event. (Plus the Nu Gundam barely had Psychoframe in comparison to the Unicorn...) The crews of the ships and those that wanted to stop the Colony Laser resonated via the Unicorn & Banshee. The Time Travel element, which is simply them viewing events, ties into the Psycho-Shards which is then reinforced by NT being focused on destroying the second Neo Zeong. And it should be noted the the Phenex didn't time travel but instead ran away via the Psychoframe allowing it to move faster-than-light. Think of it closer to Trans-Am or Quantum Teleportation from Gundam 00.
It should also be noted that the Psycho-Shards and related technology are supposedly given to Full Frontal by yhe half of Char's soul he possesses getting the knowledge via a connection with the half of Char's soul that went with Amuro and Lalah at the end of Char's Counterattack. (Supposedly they have moved onto another plane of existence. Hence why the concept of heaven and souls is so prevalent in Gundam NT.)
Edit: it is even funnier when you realize that Gundam NT is based on one of the Unicorn novels...

Not sure why, but I always thought as the "Beyond the Time" and "A Place where even time has color" as the UC "Beyond the grave", the place where dead people go, and that newtypes could use power from any of the place. NT just confirms this theory of mine.
Also, I'm pretty sure that NotChar and Banagher's conscience go through time watching the events. I think they can't interact with the events. And the novel states that Full Frontal is char's split personality that stayed behind not trusting humanity could move foward without destroying each other. In the end, when Frontal and Banagher are at the end of time, Lala and Char and the other half of char comes to get frontal, that's what Lala meant when she said "something something the thoughs when you were you captain." And I get you point of the colony laser being blocked cheapens the axis shock, but Banagher at that point is way more powerfull than Amuro (and even stronger than camille, but he disapeared) and the Nu Gundam/Sazabi psycoframe evolved into Sinanju, that evolved into the Unicorns. So banagher can harness and control way more power.
I'd love to have a long chat with you about UC Gundam, even help creating a "no one understands ZZ gundam", since it's not as bad as you think. The first half (or first 15 episodes) are upbeat, and if you are coming directly after Z Gundam, it feels like a salt in the wound, but I have a theory about it.
I've watched almost all Gundam Shows, in the UC I'm missing only the gundam begins (the rise of char) and thunderbolt.
Really hope you get to read all of this.

THANK YOU. I've just watched NT, managed to dodge spoilers for years somehow, so I'm kinda baffled by how it's being hated by a lot. This movie gives a lot of context to Unicorn, which I loved to hell, but felt the Newtype lore was a bit sketchy. I also felt it dampened the Axis Shock somewhat. NT totally cleared up a lot of stuff, even if the characters are not so fleshed out (although I loved the flashback sequences). The real robpt days of Gundam are long gone, I really appreciate every entry that's sricking to that core, however, for me, the narrative (ha-ha) amd underlying themes are more important and NT nailed that for me even without developed characters. It really expanded on the importance of Newtypes and their real purpose and capabilities. Also, it clearly expands on the themes of having the Psycho Frame is a curse tucked into a miracle. Furthermore, I loved the love story aspect of the movie, where I don't need to see a character escaping on a space ship for 30 episodes, the motivations are clear from the beginning and the somber theme of loss, regret and guilt are all over the place in this movie. NT built a lot for Unicorn and every other Newtype phenomenon throughout the series. This was a really burdening story for me with heavy themes and a lot of well-needed explanation. I just wish more people appreciated it for what it is, instead of hoping for something it was never meant to be.

Newtypes are poorly presented in Gundam but they have roots in hard sci fi from Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. Newtypes are basically the Star Child from 2001 A Space Odyseey, a species that moved beyond the human condition into a new realm of existance with the Gundams like Unicorn and Nu representing the 'spiritual' machine serving as the tool for transcendence. I personally like the idea of Newtypes and though I wish some ambiguity would remain around this concept I still think they deserve to be properly fleshed our as they are a part of hard sci fi and they are representative of Gundams lesser known themes of transcendance and technological advancements to the point of singularity. This is why I liked the endings of Unicorn and Zeta as well as the NT movie.

Instead of every UC series being a sequel, after CCA (which really was supposed to be the end until F91), they should make more OVAs set during the One Year War, or other aspects of the AEUG/Titans resistance.

Funny enough I love ZZ gundam. Especially with its connection to Moon Gundam. And it’s lead up to chars rebellion. And there are a ton of people who hated narrative. Two sides of the same coin.

I mean when you think about it in term of continuity and context, this would explain why there weren’t any other Psyco-frames Gundams after the 3 RX-0 Gundams during the time of F91 and Victory.

Thank you, I may have to check this out. I have very mixed feelings on any Gundam UC stuff. I prefer Gundam IBO, or Turn A (even if I can't get it dubbed.

I was always under the impression that new types could be either magical or advanced science. Like the machine helps them connect to the coding of the machine and alter things within it. Which would be why the funnels move around. It’s also why ai thought Full frontal could just explode their weapons using a psycho shard. He altered 5e coding. I also thought that the psycho frame enhanced you mentally making it so you can see every influence in your life or at least the ones 5at matter most to make the right choice. And that anything super crazy was science interacting with human spirit and making something beyond our understanding. Like if you told me that the Axis shock happened cause Amuros Psycho frame when overpowered by his mind demanding higher functioning from itself was able to somehow in a moment of sheer brilliance was able to alter “coding in space” by swapping around molecules to create some sort of gravity thing. I would hella except it. But to hear it reduced down to a magic system feels disappointing. To me it makes things worse. I always thought of the ghost as symbolic too. I mean like maybe not all the time cause writers go fucking crazy and don’t care and are stupid. But it would make sense that a Mobile suit would pick up an ally death or register that someone you know died and just send it immediately to your brain. And this psycho frame is enhancing your capacity to think and act so much that you can see that persons whole life and greatest ideologies constantly flashin in your face as a ghost in front of you. Sort of downplays some of that by just making it magical. But idk maybe another dimension like that really does exist. And when the suit would suddenly get really fucking old and disintegrate, I actually have no idea how this one works. But what it was just an advanced application of molecular manipulation. The unicorn responds to your emotions so it’s not too far to assume that psycho frames don’t just read your minds. There’s an ai or program that could exercise all of your knowledge in the middle of flow while simultaneously using all the benefits an AI has over us.

Yah know it just dawned on me, perhaps the whole gimmick behind psycho frame technology time travle and new types being able to converse between dimensions...Is all eventually going to become an elaborate attempt at merging U.C and non U.C timelines or in the least justifying the alt timelines. Psycho frames disappearance would justify the development of the technology used in F90-Crossbone and even Turn A. Thus creating a divergent U.C timeline if the 3rd Unicorn did in fact come from a different future.

I deff wish bandai and sunrise would remake NT into a OVA also the same with Char's Counter Attack but more along the lines of the manga Beltorchika's Children. With that said i have to admit..... I love newtype nonsense and space magic. It all makes sense to me.

My only gripe about Newtypes is they never trained their bodies like how the fighters of G Gundam.
I mean give me psychological and insane powers and I will train myself on how to use, exploit, and control such power.

i think the explanation of char's counterattack could have used the additional info that all of the mobile suits trying to push the asteroid back werent doing anything to stop it still, all the other suits other than the new gundam wouldnt last long in the environment, some suits exploded and yes the zaku's help was beautiful but it wasnt til the green glowy stuff appeared did the asteroid finally get pushed away, it pushed all the other mobile suits trying to help push the asteroid back as well, as a more protective act i imagine as others died just prior , lol I didnt finish unicorn, green eyed girl best part of show. glad to hear u didnt like then ending,. not a fan of newtypes cuz of the overtones initially it seems cool but seems to also cloud out reality.

My solution to the newtype thing is just to ignore it. I mean, I'm able to acknowledge the themes it's supposed to be expressing and yadda yadda... but it's honestly a net negative and largely irrelevant appendage to what are otherwise fairly acceptable dramas set among space colonies and mechs.
Also, ZZ as a whole... from the out of place humor of the early series to Moon Moon and everything else... is better than any single *episode* of SEED, and you can't change my mind.
