I did this with a XXL sweater that I got at a thrift shop for $2.99. I made a hat from the middle of the garment and the mittens from the sleeves. (The sweater was actually so large that I got another hat from the neck and shoulder portion.) I hand sewed everything, too. If you like this kind of re purposing, I highly recommend searching thrift shops for items that can be remade.
They probably are suggesting using a cashmere sweater that has been shrunk/felted in the washer/dryer. Or you could use a cashmere sweater with some stains or with limited moth damage. I would still, want to wash the cashmere sweater in hot water & send it through the dryer.
This pattern really does not work as well as she makes it seem. It turns out with quite small wrists and the thumb is awkard. Might work well with a very lightweight felted sweater, but don't try it with anything that felts up thick.
This is a waste, why not use the sleeves for mittens or legwarmers& the belly of the sweater use for a nice cowl scarf. This wastes too much of a sweater.
Awesome now you can use the sweater sleeves for leg warmers
