  • Spain Monthly Costs
I live in the Costa Clida just outside the town of Mazarron, South East of Spain. The wife and I are over 60 and living off our private pensions. We own our villa, pool and car.
Each month we transfer 1000 pounds sterling into our Spanish account for our monthly living costs.
Depending on where you live in Spain and your life style you can live for less or pay more.

Thanks for this Shaun. We are busy researching to come out to Murcia next year and I did a spreadsheet recently looking at all comments about the cost of living. And I am very relieved to find that I have pretty much what you are saying. Will be interested in the other Camposol sector vid you are planning to do.

Thank you Bambi, glad you found the video interesting about the costs. Still working on the other Camposol video, trying to fit the other 3 sectors on one vid! The sunny weather puts me off and I go out exploring!!!! Many thanks for watching and have a great week :)

Good information in this video Shaun. I think overall, the cost of living overall is only slightly cheaper than the UK, but Spain with its lifestyle and of course the weather, is a much nicer place to live. The health service is certainly a lot better too.

We found the weather on the Costa del Sol during the year we lived there 2016/17 bloody awful. It was cold and very, very, very wet between October and March/April when the area had incessant rain and floods everywhere. Equally, all of the Spanish properties that we rented (all 3 of them over 12 months) which were modern dwellings, had no heating what so ever and we had to buy portable heaters which constantly tripped the respective fuse boxes.

A good advise is to move to areas where locals live. For example in Murcia is not difficult to find 400€ rents for 120m2 appartments, sometimes with swimming pool. No council tax & insurance as is paid by the landlord.

Great information. Yes, having a pool is not only putting water in it and that´s it, it´s an expensive thing to have, as well as no good insulation houses as it happens almost everywhere in the south leaves the heat of the cold going in or out easily and the consequences end up opening the wallet to pay high bills!

Hi Shaun, have you done a video on the different sectors and their pros & cons in Camposol? we plan to come out later in the year to do some fact finding but would be grateful for your experience.

    •  6 років тому +2

Thank you Tony, if you watch the video again you will see a link to Welcome to Camposol, this is manly about Sector A and I'm still working on another, for the 3 other Sectors! I live next to the shops & bars while others like living away from that, so it's better for you to decide what suits you best. When I first found Camposol, I stopped a couple of people in the street and asked them if they liked it here and that's one of the main reasons why I moved here. It's a great community of different nationalities. Many thanks fro watching :)

Hi Shaun, been watching your videos and have subscribed. Myself and the missus are fully intending to sell up & move to Spain (Costa Blanca region) as soon as I reach 55 - still a bit to go as I’m not 51 yet but hey, you gotta have a plan eh. Just wanted to say hello and tell you that I think that you and your good lady should be very proud of what you’ve achieved there. Very brave - well done to you both. How’s the Spanish learning coming along? All the best.

Consider North Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Puerto de la Cruz is great. Lots of retirees from Northern Europe live there all year round. Temperature all year round averages 22 Celsius. Food and wine as well as beer is very cheap there too. We just came back from a holiday there for the month of January. It’s owned by Spain but hotter than the mainland in winter. Off the coast of the Spanish Sahara in North Africa.

Don't know where he goes shopping, but €200 a month! They must live on lettuce and carrots! €35 for a pool cleaner? You must be joking. The one we had was charging €65 a month. We've just bought a robot that cleans the pool, which cost us €850. The pool has never been as clean and much better than the hoover you use to suck up the dirt and debride from the bottom. Anyone got a pool, get one. It is far cheaper living in Spain and a far better climate than the UK. I think like a lot of people from the UK, the major problem is the language barrier, especially when it comes to the medical side of things. If you are private, well the doctors speak English, if not you need a translator who can understand all the medical jargon.

    •  5 років тому +1

Thank you Steve for your comment and depending where you live in Spain, costs will differ. Like the idea of the robot pool cleaner! Many thanks for watching and have a great week :)

I lived 10 years in Portugal and 2 years ago decided to move to Serbia. In Portugal I paid €300/mo for a 3-bdrm apt with underground parking and another €30/mo for an extra secure 4 car garage in the underground parking area for my tools, motorcycle and maintenance space. Gas and electric were around €50/mo, water/trash was €17.50 I think internet was around €15. I also bought butane bottles for heat but didn't keep records of how much. Amortizing car/motorcycle/health insurance and everything else except food, clothing, gas/diesel and travel my total monthly expenses ran around €650/mo.
My days of big houses, pools, flashy cars and owning houses are over. No more stocks, investments, portfolios or new electronic equipment to clutter my life. Retirement is going to be spent traveling around Europe on a motorcycle searching out interesting cultures, museums, art, ruins and history. Pensions are more than enough to cover my lifestyle and renting only requires a month or two notice to cleanly move to another country. Moving into places with great neighbors means when I take off for a week or two trip I don't worry about being robbed. No more heavy yard maintenance and last time I had a pool I swore never again.
Here I live in a rural area like a Serb don't live like an American. Live in a Yugoslav built large 2-bdrm apt with an basement garage in a building w/2 apts. One up and the other down. My apt is semi-furnished and the entire ground floor. I pay €110/mo and €10/for water and trash pickup. Dec elec was €28 and internet is €14.80. This winter I paid what amortizes over the year as €12.80/mo for heating Butane bottles. Gas/diesel are around €1.35/lt (about same as Portugal) and I fill the car about every other month. Mostly ride a bicycle for trips under 20km. Insurance figures are about the same.
So, my expenses in Serbia are around €175.60 plus car/motorcycle/health insurance. Bringing the total to around €385.60/mo not including food, clothes auto diesel/motorcycle gas, travel expenses, Harley parts and a little Jack Daniels here and there. Seems everytime I move lower US to Alaska to lower US to west Africa to US to west Africa (again) to US to Portugal to Serbia I say no more moves but after a few years I just get restless. Now, at 68 NO MORE MOVES. I'm just getting too old to learn a new language every few years.

It's good to see that you're realistic about the cost of living. We moved to a small village in Andalusia. Our villa had 4 bedrooms and plenty of living space. Great in the late spring and summer months but no one warned us that the villa would be freezing and damp in winter. Anyway, moving on. Pool maintenance of a 10m x 5 m pool became quite expensive. Especially in the warmer months, running the pumps and filtration system 12 plus hours a day became quite costly. Have to mention that the physical maintenance/ cleaning the pool we do. . However, insist on friends wanting to go for a swim, to use the outdoors shower to wash off sun lotions as there's nothing worse that having an Oily film Lying on surface of the pool.
Enough of my negativity folks. Enjoy living in Spain 😀

Did you plan the bird cloud just before 4:00? It is amazing what a difference there are between there and here in Fuerteventura for some things. Our electric bill has never been over 100 but then we don't need aircon, the council tax on our 3-bed villa with pool on a 1000 sq.m. plot is only 325€ a year and despite all of our water being desalinated, using vast quantities of electricity, it is definitely cheaper than yours. Good stuff Shaun. By the way, did you know that you can actually pay into the Spanish Health system instead of using private health insurance. I think it is about 65€ a month each.

    •  6 років тому +3

Didn't notice the bird cloud John!!!! Electric is expensive here and one we are never going to cut in price! Need the air-con!!!! We did hear you can pay into the Spanish Health system but you have to be a resident which we are doing this year. At the moment my wife has started her own business (self employed) and I will be put on the Spanish Health system as we will by paying tax but didn't want to mention that as it's still very new and having to explain that would be even more confusing!!!! The car needs an itv once it is over 4 years old then from 4 to 10 years it every 2 years then once it is 10 years old it need an itv every year, this is done at a government testing station, this station could be 40 or 50 kilometers away from where you live.
News for all ? if you spend more than 183 days a year in spain you are a resident and should be paying income tax in spain, even on your pension. Then your fiscal record will allow you to use the spanish national health service hence you will pay income tax but you will receive free medical treatment, and any prescription for drugs will be based on your income via your tax return, so if you are not on a large income you pay a lower price for your prescription.
If you are a resident in spain no longer living in the uk but receive a pension from the uk pre taxed you can apply for your uk tax back that you have paid as you can not be taxed twice due to a double taxation treaty with spain.
Why is this important to pay tax as a resident in a country like spain? simple if you or your partner passes away in spain, then your estate can be back taxed 5 years, plus interest. If you rent a place you might be able to get away with it, but if you own a property, and your spouse decides to move back to the uk. Then when you sell it the taxes owed will be taken at point of sale.
in my humble opinion i would advise anyone, who is thinking of relocating to spain to spend about 100 euros a year on joining a company like ABACO on line advisers. Take a look at their website for free, they have lots of advice and once you have joined you can ask questions online. Do your spanish tax form online and access virtually every question you need answering via them, AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IT'S ALL UP TO DATE, do not rely on what tom dick or harry told you in the bar, or what something posted 5 years ago on line.
A funeral plan is important, the system in spain is you or your spouse dies, the undertaker comes and you sign a contract with your bank details, he can and will freeze your account to make sure he gets paid. This could leave the survivor without access to any cash.
You need up to date information to decide before you move to spain and not after you move. As it just might pay you to rent for a few month of the year rather than move over to spain?

    •  5 років тому

Thank you Michael for all the information and hope it helps people to decide on what they do. Thankfully we got our residency and our Spanish driving licenses and have seen on the local FB groups that they just changed their terms on residency which at the moment I don't know what they are. Just been to our accountant about paying our residency tax which is always best to be ahead of any new tax laws. Some great advice and many thanks for commenting. Many thanks for watching and have a great week :)

Been here off and on for 20 years. I have noticed that on the Costa del Sol if you rent, then there has been a increase. This is due to the larger influence of Scandinavian retirees and their larger pension pot. Average 2 bed here now 600 to 800 Euros per month. Local Spanish are not happy because they are also looking to rent. And there has been one or two demonstrations in the town. Since brexit announcement the exchange went from 1.29 to 1.14. I survive on 1200 Euros but not enough to spend eating out and taking holidays in other countries. So I'm working now. The shock of that is if you manage to get a contract, indefinite, you are very lucky. More often you do is offered self employed, which is automino, which can be as high as 285 euro to a low of 50 to 75 Euros per month. Then the tax, at 21%. You can claim around 15% back at the end of tax year. This makes it only worthwhile if you find a job for 1000 to 1200 a month. Not a lot of work around, the main 3 occupations are Bar work, real estate and Telemarketing. Don't see many new arrivals between the age of 30 to 50 years. Like there used to be. Uncertain future for Brits in Europe is the main cause and lack of job market.

    •  6 років тому +3

Many thanks for the input, I get many people asking about how much, jobs and price of property but I always say, come out and visit and look. Some parts of Spain are very expensive and jobs are very few! Speak Spanish, you have a better chance. Too easy to view on the internet and see the sun, the villa and the life stye but it comes with a cost. Many thanks for the info and thanks for watching :)

Unless you just need to be around a lot of expats move to an area or country where they are not. By the time everybody knows about a great place the prices go out of sight and the greatness is gone. Many, many Americans and British that I've come across over the years just really want to live in a facsimile of their home country with a foreign address.

Hi Shaun, great info. 2 questions: 1) Rough idea of what you pay on the oil heating (you didn’t say) and 2) is the council tax/IBI an annual charge as 500 sounds a lot per month. Thanks 😊

    •  6 років тому +1

Hi Kate, during the cold months we use about 50 liters a week (morning & night). Between 3 to 400 euros a year. The IBI tax is once a year and we pay that in one payment. Hope that helps - read DIGGER360 comment below, Steve lives couple villas down from me - gives more info. Many thanks fro watching :)

Thanks Shaun, that’s really helpful. I’ve read Digger’s comment too. Really torn between whether or not we should have a pool when we finally get out there. Would obviously like one but they do seem expensive to run so perhaps a plunge pool or hot tub will have to do! Loving your work, keep it up 😊

Is there any particular day that is best for transferring money with the interest rates, do you have an agreed rate with a currency exchange?

    •  6 років тому

Hi, I use Money Corp, but there are many more that can give a good deal. You get a better deal over the phone than on the internet. When you transfer big amounts of money (buying a property) you need to pick a good day but now I just transfer enough for the month on any day. I go by the pound to the Euro and anything extra is a bonus! Many thanks for watching and have a great weekend :)

    •  5 років тому +1

Hi Calvin, the ehic card is really for accident care and not general health care if you need operation plus you need a translator at the hospital for health issues. •  5 років тому

Thank you for your comment, I did say it varies from each month and it's euros and not dollars. We do have fruit trees in our garden and also grow some of our own veg plus we go out to eat which can be cheaper - breakfast across the road from me is 3.50 euros and with a coffee 4.50 euros. @anae8150 5 років тому +1

@ Sorry, I meant euros - I've been negotiating in dollars all day. €4.50 per day (I assume for 2 people) is €135 per month just for breakfast! Or have I misunderstood. I spend at least $100 a week for 2 people. We only go to bars rarely as it very soon adds up and the food is better at home. What am I doing wrong? Hi there. I live near Pilar de la Horadada, which is about 60 or so km north of you. I am still in province of Alicante..We pay water in trimesters...i.e. 3 months and it includes trash and cleaning streets.
Second think is the Non residential RE tax, you talk about at 5:15, costing you about 232/year(116 for each?)....It seems like you are living in Spain more then 6 months of a year(183 days a year), which means you automatically become fiscal resident.(weather you want or not). Check with Police-Extrangeria (most likely in Mazaron). You should not pay for Non resident tax...obviously, because you are resident. Your tax man is bilking you. Fact, that you do not have your residential status paperwork corrected, doesn't mean you are not resident. Being a resident then requires you to pay income taxes out of any income from entire world you might have(like having property in Mexico and receiving rent or having stock in US and anything you receive in UK).. Spanish Income brackets are very hi. The danger you are in, is, that if you do not have the paperwork about residency right and someone finds out, they will slam you with tax for the missed years and then the penalty for not paying, which can be very steep. You can loose your home...as it happens in several other cases... Check it out with local Hacienda office in Mazaron. I am telling you, because I am fighting it right now....You can go unnoticed for years and then loose everything you have ever invested in, in Spain. They will check your water bill, electricity bill and Internet and use it as a proof against you.(meaning that you have resided there more then 183 days a year). Your tax man surely knows, you are staying all year in there and he should have told you all that.....It might be a trap.
    Good luck!

    •  5 років тому +1

Thank you for your comment and hope people read it! Since making this video, we are both residents now and have our Spanish driving licenses. My wife is self employed now so I come under the Spanish health system. We are due to pay our resident tax very soon which our accountant is sorting out and hopefully soon I will do another update on Monthly Costs video. Each region has a different why of doing things and becoming a resident was an interesting experience as we was told one thing and when we went to do ours, so different to other places. The tax system is also confusing and something I couldn't make a video of!!! There are some horror stories when selling your house and have all these debts to pay. Many thanks for watching and have a great weekend :)

@ Good for you...But as far as doing the things different way in different areas and places....in my opinion, it is just lack of knowledge of doing the things right way. Because , for example, I was in Hacienda Orihuela 3x and 3 times I've got a different, even contradicting answer to the same subject, when I delved in the details of it...I guess Spain emerged from Franco's era not so long time ago and since then it was almost constant changes of rules....definitely not long enough time to understand the meaning of responsibility at work place(and that includes the knowledge of working procedures and knowledge of related rules)...and that goes mainly for government workers....it is sort of protectionism for them, giving them feeling, they do not have to be perfect....they are not wasting any of their own time and money, thus it is not their problem....And that goes into quite hi positions of workplaces....Centuries of culture, which did not require it.......Very annoying! But other then that, I love Spain anyway.....

Like you, we are over 60's but too young for a state pension and using private pensions plus top ups from savings. Our problem was private health care. We didn't qualify for Spanish state healthcare system because reciprocal agreements for early retirees was stopped and the EHIC only covers 'visitors' (not residents) and even if we played the system, it's only valid for 3 months anyway. We couldn't find a medical insurer that would take us on because I have a 'chronic condition' ... namely type 2 diabetes which excluded me from private medical cover. This meant we eventually had to return to the UK because we couldn't get any Spanish medical cover - unless we lied on our medical insurance declaration. You also failed to mention that you have to pay for your prescriptions in Spain.
As far as living costs, we found that on the whole, we were forking out about the same as the UK on a monthly basis but the main big expense was the cost of importing a car or buying a used Spanish registered one when compared to the UK or other european countries.
Our biggest bug bear however was that even though the Spanish authorities have embraced the latest technology, they still want you to fill in paper forms and turn up in person rather than use the internet or post.

    •  4 роки тому +1

Thank you Denis, glad you enjoyed the video. Sorry you had to return to the UK. Something I didn't mention when applying for private health care. My wife went self employed and we come under the Spanish health system. We heard that after one year of being a resident we can pay into the Spanish health system which will will do as the Brexit will seem to not cover us if they pull out! If it ever happens! Many thanks for your comment. Many thanks for watching and have a great week :)

@ We only found out about the state healthcare scheme allowing us to join the Spanish system after a year (for a monthly fee) after our UK return plans were too far down the line and we had signed off our flat etc. Hey ho .... but it is worth mentioning that even proper pensioners under reciprocal agreements have to pay for their prescriptions.

I've gone for residency (and got it now) and i'm paying into the system for 2 years minimum, in order to get onto the health care system like a typical spanish citizen. I was advised by a Spanish lawyer friend.

Don't think moving to Spain is like the UK, it is not. We lived and had a property there and were glad to return to the UK . The Spanish will tax you for as much as they can. When I put the money into the Spanish bank they charged me 1200 euros for accepting the money! My friend has just lost his wife and will have to pay many 1000's in death duties. Trying to sell your villa can also take many years, When we sold our villa (we had 8 agents each had a different price as they add their commission on to what price you want) the buyer left Spain so the bank did a repo and then sold it, the local authority thought the new buyer under paid and charged him 10000 euros! When my friend sold his the local authority sent he and his wife a bill for 1000 euros each just for selling the villa It is to hot in the summer and can be very cold in the winter. It's best to rent for 6 months and then decide if it's for you.

No disrespect but I think the Spanish saw you coming. My wife and I chose to buy a mobile home on a residential park near Malaga. We pay €350 per month for 200sq plot, the fee includes 2 swimming pools indoor and outdoor, Bowls green, Gym, bar/ resteraunt , 24 hour gated security and free wi fi plus free TV with 157 Channels, gas is by canister, 2 canisters per month equals £24, water and sewage works out at £23 per month, electric is on meter and works out around £35 per month, Aldi supermarket around the corner and we have a hire car which works out around £55 per week....., no mot, no car tax, no servicing fees or new tyres, we only pay for fuel. Also, £110 for Annual insurance on our mobile home. In UK we where paying £1400 annually Council tax that consisted of having our bins emptied twice a month, TV licence £140 annually, gas £800 annually, electric £600 annually, and Water rates of £64 PER WEEK....thank you Anglian Water. Living in Spain.....No brainer

Living in NSW Central Coast, Australia... in a house eqivelent to a British Millionaire (4 bedroom, two bathrooms, double garage etc etc) about 400,000 pounds. Average wage $1,300.00 per week = 800 pounds. Beaches 20-30 miles long with surf as high as 4-8feet, with Mountains in the background.... Train, bus connection to Sydney. By FREEWAY 1hr 15 min. Why would anyone want to live in Spain...Last year in Malaga..Garden size beaches, Average tasting food, with in honesty cheap drinks at VERY ordinary bars. Nice local people, living like 1950's Australia......Aussie joint Seniors pension $3,000.00 ( 1,700.00 pounds) per month. Discounted Seniors Water rates, electricity rates, Travel, FREE car Rego, Free Medicare etc...We don't realise how lucky we are !!

4 bedroom and two bathrooms house in Central Coast is no a equivalent off "british millionaire dream house " For that price you can get normal standard australian house
.."Why would anyone like to live in Central Coast .... Spain have tapas for 1.50€ compare to tapas in Central Coast for 15/ AU... What cultural event do you have in Central Coast ? Local pubs ,shopping malls and Netflix TV ....Malaga is not whole Spain ,the way you see a world is very narrowminded ,beaches in north / west Spain in Galicia are even better than your overated and overcrowded Terrigal beach
The price of housing in Australia do not reflect the quality or luxury at all. Old house in inner west Sydney is around 1mil AU and that is basic house bricks and mortar Yes we are " very lucky" young generation have no hope in hell to buy a house in Sydney but hey they can allways join you and buy a "millionaire" house in CC .

Is their council tax in Spain? If so how much is it on average? I suppose it's different for each region? Does it depend on the size of the property? Is it also inclusive of the water bill or is the "water & sewage" bill paid to a water utility company? Do properties generally have a gas supply? Are most properties in small villages and remote regions connected to the grid? i.e gas, water, sewage, electricity, telephone, Internet? What sort of Internet speeds can you expect? Thanks!

    •  5 років тому +1

Hi, lot of questions - as you said, depends on the region and Spains a big place - council tax here (IBA) is on the property size, for me 500 euros for the year. Also non-resident tax or resident tax every year and this also on the size of property and this is for each person living in the property. Water is paid every 2 months and depends on usage - we have a pool and big garden. No gas here only bottle, we use oil for heating. Remote places may not have water or electricity, this is something you will have to find out. Internet and fast band here but we do get storms that can knock out the main station at times.
