Valencia, Spain - Cost of Living

  • Valencia is Spain’s third-largest city; it has all the benefits of a major metropolitan area such as bus, train, and air connections. It also has great healthcare facilities and plenty of recreation opportunities. This city is full of culture, with science and art museums, theaters and concert halls.
    Getting around by public transportation is easy. During my time in Valencia, I was living in Bario del Carmen, and I walked to most everything. With the benefit of big-city amenities, Valencia’s cost of living and real estate is much less than that of Madrid or Barcelona… and offers conveniences of a modern city along with a true taste of living in old style Europe.
    Lunch, including a beer or glass of wine, will run to about $12. Rent for a two-bedroom apartment in one of Valencia’s best neighborhoods starts at about $550 a month. If you would rather buy a place, the price for a small apartment in a trendy neighborhood starts around $100,000.
    Here are some average costs:
    A meal at an inexpensive restaurant in the City Center, including drink $12
    Domestic Beer, 0.5-liter draught at a restaurant $2.30
    Cappuccino (medium) $1.80
    Apartment Rent, 1 bedroom in the City Centre $680.
    And most food and produce at the grocery store was higher quality and cost less than what I would expect in the U.S.
    Valencia lies on Spain’s southeastern coast and has many of the things that attract tourists to Spain, all in one place: The city has a vibrant café culture, with a maze of little streets and impressive architecture and medieval buildings.
    It’s also right on the Mediterranean, so you can enjoy the broad sandy beaches and grab some seafood fresh from the sea. There are also ultra-modern visitor attractions at the City of the Arts and Sciences, and it all goes to make Valencia one of Spain’s best destinations for living or retiring.
    Nomads, living here month-to-month, staying in the city center, using a co-work space and eating out every meal can expect to spend about $2,300 per month.
    An expat with a year lease can get by for under $1,400 per month.
    If you’re good at living cheap and sharing a flat with friends, you can get by for under $900 per month.
    My budget for living one month in the city center, staying at inexpensive hotels and eating out at least once a day was about $1,400.

      @@danstvguy Parking? Hahaha, that I can say, being natural from Valencia: Not good haha. You should get a private parking (200€/month or so). The thing is, now the city is becoming more friendly for pedestrians, which means less space for cars in the city centre. But the connections with underground are enough to move around.

      I did Not Get treated Well by the Spaniards people, quite the Contrary!! I visited Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona, and I have to Say that Valencia was the WORST experience ever in my travels, and So was London, England. RUDE people, and Unwelcoming. I Speak perfect Spanish and the Spaniards hate expats, they dislike anybody coming to their country, but the tolerate it because they are in Big financial trouble and Want the MOney that people bring to their nation, but they hate foreigners, because Spaniards have a Superiority Complex.

I was in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, and Murcia. And, I don't understand this Bad Smell Coming from everywhere, like from the Ground or the Air like in Barcelona and Valencia. Valencia is Nothing like You See in the Videos, absolutely Not. I, personally don't recommend it, if Any thing, I would recommend Barcelona instead, is way better and more beautiful than Valencia, but I warn You ***Be Warned*** Spaniards may seem "friendlier" than the English and Germans, but they truly are Rough people, and there are a Lot of People there who don't appreciate expats moving there. Spaniards, especially the Men, are RUDE. And I Speak Spanish like them, but they are Not Nice People, nor Very Clean.

    It's not only Valencia, any city in Spain offers quality of life, in my opinion, unlike any other. Spaniards truly believe "you work to live" and you get it through the vibrant, contagious energy of its cities and its people. I know it first hand, lived and worked in Madrid for more than a decade....best experience of my life!

    • @br3ak_

      Yeah, and then you move in. You realize Spaniards work more on average than central and northern European countries, and for less money. You get home completely exhausted after long hours of work + commuting and you never get to experience the vibrant and contagious energy of the city. When you get home from the office all you can do is crash in bed and try to stay awake till 9-10PM watching Netflix to not fall asleep too early. You sometimes try going out at 8 PM because that's what you've seen in UA-cam videos and after all that's what you came in Spain for, but you can barely even keep your eyes open and you need to go back inside in 20 minutes because you're passing out.
      There's a reason most people moving to Spain are either rich or rich and old looking to retire. If you move there as a regular young adult, the bubble bursts in 3-4 months.
      Moving to Spain at 45 years old with a successful career is a dream, moving at 25 working 9 hours for 1k - 1.5k euros is hell. People should mention this a lot more in videos.

    Okay so me and my fiance are deciding between Valencia but Alicante for cheaper ($300) dollar rent. My Question: We want to live in Valencia so where or which neighborhood can we find an apartment for $300 - $450?

    • @LivingOverseasTV
      @LivingOverseasTV  6 років тому +2

      There are random studios that come up all over Valencia in the 350 Euro - 450 Euro range, but they go fast. You have to watch the market like a hawk and be willing to throw down a deposit (one month's rent) and a realtor fee (one month's rent) immediately to lock it in and speak Spanish on top of it all to communicate with nearly all the realtors.
      There are a lot of variables such as, length of time, flexibility in living arrangements, etc., but without knowing all of those things, my first answer would be to look in the university areas first. For example, in Cabanyal neighborhood they cater to a lot of University students, but those cheap listings come up in early September for the start of the school year.
      Those go within hours typically and if you aren't in the city to go in person and grab them. Even close-by they are competitive to get into, but definitely not impossible. You also have a varying degree of proof to show the realtors you can pay the rents. Some of the cheapest places require you make three times the rent amount. Nearly all of them require that you have a Spanish bank account and a working contract to show them you can pay the rent.
      If you’re looking for a short-term rental, I would recommend to look through Airbnb listings and send private messages to see who might be willing to do a short-term stay.
      Looking in conjunction with the University schedule and getting there before the students will probably land the greatest number of low dollar options.
      There are also some great Facebook Expat groups like, “Americans in Valencia Spain”, that you can ask about housing. I got a free month in an apartment in a great location for cat sitting and watering some plants, so it’s always worth checking. Good luck with the search.

      It may depend on from which country you are a citizen. Spain is a party to the Schengen Agreement. This means that as a U.S. citizen, I was able to enter Spain for up to 90 days on a tourist visa and then cross the border to renew for another 30 days. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay. ... Visit the Embassy of Spain website for the most current visa information.

      @@LivingOverseasTV Hi. Could you clarify this. If I go to Spain for three months, I can then leave and go to, say Portugal, for, what, one day? Then I can cross back into Spain for another month without obtaining an extended stay visa of any kind? Or do you mean cross the border out of the Schengen zone? @@northofyou33 Officially, you’ll need a longer-term national visa (visado nacionale) if you intend to live, work, or study in Spain for longer than three months. If you plan on living there, this is the way to go to avoid any problems. Unofficially, as a tourist, I haven't had a problem crossing borders and returning a week later. Maybe because of my age or because of the US passport, I haven't had them even look at my passport. The just opened it, stamped it and sent me on my way. Here is a web link with some good information: www.expatica.com/es/moving/visas/visas-and-immigration-102354/

      Less that what this guy is saying. For a student probably between 500-800. It depends of your lifestyle

    • @MM-kq6fe
      @MM-kq6fe 4 роки тому

      Most students share apartment so you can even get lucky and spend only 200-300€ every moth if you have more than one flatmate. All university facilities are, of course, free for students. Degrees are fairly cheap, but it depends (I am an English Philologist student at the University of Valencia and my degree costs about 1,000€ per year). València is also the most Erasmus-populated city of Europe, so you will get to meet people from all around the globe here. And of course, wherever there's youth, there's also a very active nightlife! The cheapest nightclubs cost about 5€, but some will let you enter for free before a certain hour. Those who do not enjoy nightclubs just stay in a pub terrace or chat outside on the street and buy beers to ambulant vendors. If you don't like the nightlife at all it's okay, Spaniards love being outside and sunbathing while having a cafe or a cool beer with their friends.
      Food is really cheap at supermarkets and the variety and quality of our food is incomparable. You don't have to spend 12€ eating out, there's plenty of cheap restaurants with 'menús' (2 course meal with drink and dessert included), or you can even go to food houses where they prepare homemade food, you pick the plate you want, they pack it and you can eat for just 4€ a delicious traditional valencian paella dish (the original paella!) that would otherwise cost you 12€ in the city center.

    Hi there,
    Thanks for the video!!
    Any ideas of what would be the cost for a family incl university 3 and parents?
    Thanks 🙏

      Valencia has 2 public universities and numerous private ones, and all of the universities offer most of the courses in english. Public unis are about 1400€ a year, and private one around 7500€ A year (about $1700 and $9100 respectively). A nice affordable flat with 3 bedrooms and 2+ bathrooms in a nice area costs between 800-1100€ a month ($950-$1350). And bills should amount to around 200-300€ a month for water+gas+electricity ($300-$500).

    How about English I do understand some Spanish as I took a couple years in college. However could I get by fine on English?

    • @LivingOverseasTV
      @LivingOverseasTV  5 років тому +1

      It's fairly easy to get by without knowing Spanish. There is usually an employee that knows English anywhere you need to do business. Having the Google Translate app on your phone will help.

    How would you rate Barcelona/Ibiza/Madrid

    • @LivingOverseasTV
      @LivingOverseasTV  5 років тому +1

      I love Barcelona. If you are a city person, then I think you will love it. I prefer it over Madrid but Madrid is very nice too. For me, Ibeza is a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. too much of a tourist, party destination and overpriced, but that is just my opinion. You can get cheap local flights around Spain and Europe which makes it very easy to enjoy many places.

      You say most Americans move to Spain to retire and live off there savings ? How’s the job market ?

    • @LivingOverseasTV
      @LivingOverseasTV  5 років тому

      I don't know much about the local job market. I know that if you are working locally, you earn a local salary. Most of my foreign friends teach or work online and receive an income outside of Spain. Sorry I can't be more helpful in this area.
