Thank you so much for mention me and my work!! Means so much to hear you say I influenced the scene when I, 6 years ago, had no interest in being a designer. I just wanted to be part of the music world, the thing i love the most because my entire life was INFLUENCED by all the bands I've ever loved. I stumbled upon graphic design and the visual arts and bam here I am!
Even tho I create art in the "metal" realm, I prefer the cleaner, simpler and more beautiful and ethereal style to the "brutal" and "destructive" that sometimes goes hand and hand with this style of music which I'd say it's funny haha
Personally I think both Alpha Wolf and Northlane's arts looks great, I thought it fit the sound and I knew what they were going for

I personally am a fan of the Alphawolf art. It stands out in the sea of similarities of Metalcore albums, especially with the obvious nu-metal/hip-hop themes.
Personally I’m not a fan of AI-generated much of anything because it’s by-definition recycled.
Grew up listening to a lot of East Coast underground hip hop, the Alpha Wolf album art is sick. Reminds me of Apathy’s album art for the Where’s Your Album? mixtape.

Alpha wolfs art is fantastic and really does stand put, its filled with details to find.
As for ai, it is just very harmful to artists as a whole and i think artists, both musical and visual should have much more solidarity together. The issue is that it is just a mashup of stolen artwork that people did not consent to be used and such. Idk man, as an artist who has been dealing with this shit for a while it is nust really frustrating to see the art community as a whole saying "hey this stuff is really bad and harmful", and to see other very malicious uses of ai over and over again for years just to have people go "eh its okay". Its just exhausting, now more than ever we need to hold on to that creativity and such and to see this (from artists themselves, who should know what harm they cause by using it) is again just really tiring.

A lot of the music i discovered in the 80s was based on one of three things. A) band name. B) song/album titles. C) cover art. Most of the bands i did discover that way i had no idea even existed before then, and i still listen to all of them today, so yes, cover art is important in how an album can or will be recieved. For example, Helloween with Keeper of the Seven Keys. I had NO idea who they were, but the band name, album art and title all drew me into purchasing arguably one of the most important and influential metal albums to ever be released.
Northlane artwork looks great and it matches the artwork of Obsidian and Alien which represents their new direction in sound which is so so good 😊
Great video! Amazing job with doing the research to put this together and bring facts from both sides of the table. Here's hoping future generation artists still succeed with their works while also allowing AI to push artistic creativity further.
I think the problem is that just like in everything metal related we associate to a genre, wich is bs, for me a good cover art is the one that reflects the tone, sentiment, style and story of an album, and like you say i think both fit in that
You should check Caligula's horse- Charcoal Grace. If you enjoyed some bands like Vola, Haken you might appreciate it as well such an awesome album
In general, when I dig the music, I try to trust the artist that the album art represents the content in some way or another. And it almost always does. So yeah, I love both! 🤩
I actually actively notice and look out for the album covers, album names, and song names.

I personally LOVE Northlane's cover art for the other most recent single, Dante. It honestly stuck out to me from the first ever time I saw it.

This is a first that I’m hearing about people complaining about an albums art work. It’s the band’s perspective on how their artwork should be and what represents the tracks in that album. People are allowed to have their opinions but I wouldn’t lose sleep on it or crap on their ( the bands ) vision. Music is art and it’s awesome to see their visions come to life

Runner-up: Slow Decay - The Acacia Strain because that album art is beautiful and is a huge juxtaposition to the music.

The Northlane art basically shows that people should get better at looking into both sides of an argument before spewing their thoughts onto the internet.
Also hearing the comment about Pain Remains getting the same style as And I Return To Nothingness makes me sad that Mariusz Lewandowski is gone and no longer making epic artwork. He's gotta be my favorite 😢
Why do people have so much expectation for album art. Such a weird gripe to have. You either like it or you don’t, and you either like the music or you don’t. Weird.
Your opinions on album artwork has a very balanced view to it. I would say one of the best album artworks is the one for Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon." There's also a comically bad album cover for an album Iron Maiden put out in 2003 called "Dance Of Death", and the CGI graphics are atrocious, the Toy Story animations Pixar did looked better and that was made almost ten years earlier.
I also really like both album artworks but Imo the artwork for the Dante single was a bit better than the actual album artwork

Hasn't Nik Nocturnal used AI art since summer 2022 when he released Translucent? It wasn't done by him, I think an artist did use AI for him, but went all his song releases last year I kn ow he did several of them himself, like Granny In Da Club. Haven't much controversy around that, but I guess it's different when an idependent artist does it.
In the grand scheme, my opinions on AI won’t change a thing. However, it’s so fucking weird to me when bands (artists) choose for a AI art. Like if they aren’t willing to support other artists of a different medium, I feel it’s hard to trust them that their music is genuine.
It honestly feels like I'm the only person who literally does not give a shit about album art. I can appreciate a good design, I am a graphic designer after all.. But I'm not going to write a tweet or post about some artwork lol
i personally dont care about album covers as long as its music content is great, some of the best albums of all time dont have great album covers and some of the best covers have a whack content 😂
I think Northlanes artwork is stunning. It's genuinely our artwork this year that I was impressed by and have remembered without trying.

When it comes to the Alpha Wolf album art, I see what they were going for, but it’s not my personal taste. The Northlane art is honestly cool
I love that main argument I'm seeing is "even if it fits their style, the artwork is still poor." Just because you think it's bad doesn't mean it's bad lol

Perfect album covers like masstaden under vatten heighten the music and make it even better. I know the Pain Remains cover has a story behind it but I find the cover and the music kinda boring

I don't think "it fits their aesthetic" is a good argument to losing the integrity of art. I will not go into the debate, but it's not a tool and I find it super weird that bands want us to value their craft and art and support them but doesn't when it come to visual art. If consumers are fine with mediocrity that's one thing, but I expect more from fellow artists
Both album arts look fantastic! They both truly fit the sound both bands are going for. I find it just hilarious people arguing over art in the first place. Art is subjective and who gives a shit if someone doesn’t like it lol
The whole AI art debate is also interesting, because still about 20 years ago a lot of people were still shitting on abstract and contemporary art because it completely subverts expectations of traditional art.
It’s great that artists these days have access to so many incredible digital tools. The notion that an artist is a lone, self-made prodigy who does everything themselves is also great erroneous. Many renowned artists have assistants and a whole team working for them.
This goes back to the Renaissance. How can someone really think that Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel by himself?
Bernini, who was a famed marble sculptor of the Renaissance has around 900 statues to his name… think of the time it takes to make a big ass marble statue with such fine detail… he had a whole team working for him.
Sorry about this rant, but the populist view of art and artists is just so obtuse and ignorant.

Being against ai is being against the future. AI is used in any and all areas of any industry. I’m currently writing my masters thesis in machine learning and people have no idea how many areas of their lives have AI involved in it
