  • Learn the ancient art of Ukrainian Easter Egg decorating-- a sacred and meditative practice. Pysanky, as these eggs are known in Ukrainian, are made using the wax-resist "batik" method, in which designs are drawn or written onto the egg with beeswax, and then submerged in a series of dye baths. Pysanky are often very intricate and include layers of meaning, imbued with symbols of protection and goodwill.

I love how you just divide your egg and then decide what design you would like to write. It is a meditation, a piece of artwork. I have practiced for years using some wonderful instruction books. But I enjoy doing my own ideas more, even though they are not as good. You have shown me a deeper aspect to this wonderful art form.

Thank-you for the tutorial. I came across a book I bought 2nd hand over a decade ago titled "Ukrainian Easter Eggs & how we make them" while searching for a cookbook. I decided that now was a good time to finally attempt to learn how to do it and bought dies & kisky ( already had beeswax). Reading about the spirituality behind it only furthered my resolve. Watching you do it has helped a lot.

What a great video. Clear and cheerful, with just the right amount of explanatory detail. (My pysanky are not nearly this clean-lined (think shaky, blotchy chicken scratch) but I am working on it.)

My instructor takes the wax off by putting a frying pan on low heat and takes a baby cloth diaper and rubs it on the pan once it’s heated. Warms up the cloth and then wipes off the wax.

    Great video thank you.
One thing that works really well to get the wax off is a heat gun. One you would use for embossing.
One other thing that you should mention is that you can't eat the egg because the dye is toxic to eat.
One other thing that I can't remember is the color order. Not able to go from blue to yellow then green you have to stick with color family's and if you change you have to vinegar bath the egg.
Your strait lines are incredible teach that too because getting a strait line on a curved surface is incredibly difficult. Please make more videos like this.

Did you weave the towel you are working on? I noticed you have a loom and the towel is lovely . Your pysanki is exceptionally beautiful.

Could you do this on a wooden egg?

    • @thisfolklife1006

probably not- the beeswax won't adhere the same way, but you can dye wood... if you try it, let us know!

Won't the eggs turn rotten inside?

    • @CapUkrFestival
      @CapUkrFestival  3 роки тому +3

If there is no crack in the shell, over time the inside will just dry up with no smell.

It does rot and may crack because of the gases. Usually people poke two holes in top and bottom of the egg and blow the contents out.

It takes a brave soul to leave the contents. A rotten egg is a highly exclusive stink device. Perhaps eventually it'll be safe and smell free but you better not bump it in the meantime.

In the final step of dying could you use a heat gun to melt wax rather than candle?
