Something to note is gathering palicos don't get extra anomaly materials. I generally go double dog for those hunts since their increased damage + buddy part breaker means more anomaly materials. I bring double gather palicos specifically when going for drops like mantles

The palamute silkbinder also comes with a built in 'pinning' status that builds up on monsters as they attack. Every once in a while, a monster will get tied down with wirebug silk to the ground as if you'd just slammed it into the wall with a wyvern ride. Helps a ton for getting monsters to hold still relatively still for a short while, although they won't be totally helpless during that time.
it's also really hard to understate just how insane the silkbinder's damage can get. Stacking range up, crit up, and pierce up skills on a palamute while also giving them an offensive scroll like flurry strike or blitz, and they'll be throwing out truly insane damage, especially if you're willing to give them an appropriate elmenetal weapon.
And of course, jumping with a palamute into a dismount is a free full charge aerial bonk for GS and Hammer.

I think it gets overlooked sometimes amongst the other stuff that you can hop on the palamute during the fight to sharpen or use consumables while running at doggo speeds. Life saver when your build can't fit speed eating/sharpen.

Gathering palicoes are literally the only reason I still use palicoes. They're cracked. I don't think I really need the extra damage a canyne brings so I'd just use two gathering palicoes if canynes weren't so good for moving around the map. I see people talking about the wirebug and fast travel points but in most places the maps are just too big not to waste loads of time getting around that way.

I still bring one of each on solo hunts and love them both. I made some for ranged and some for melee attack, some that can do status, element or either. The dps of the palamute is insane. One palamute with the right set up can do at least a minimum of 5000 damage every hunt, and sometimes even more than 10000 on some monsters. While a palico will struggle to even reach 1000 damage in most hunts. In multiplayer, the palamute can outperform some hunters in dps if the hunt goes on long enough.

Palicos are unmatched in support, defense, and utility

Palamutes are my preferred Buddies all the way, even before Sunbreak's Silkbinder, Sniff 'em Out, and Palamute Bag. Even with small arenas like the Coral Palace. And mostly for one reason- mobility in battle. Yeah the mobility across the field is great too, but you can sharpen your weapon on a Palamute which I use in battle. It means I can still move while sharpening. That way, I don't have to slot Speed Sharpening in order to not leave myself wide open to keep my weapon at optimal color sharpness. This leaves my size 1 slots more open for the likes of Steadfast and Flinch Free. I also use a Palamute in order to quickly chase monsters that like to yeet themselves across the battling area, such as Ibushi, enabling me to keep up the damage. Also it's just really fun to leap off the Palamute and do an aerial attack.

They seriously do an insane amount of damage for NPC companions. I think they do more than followers too which is hilarious. Barrusu I think did a video showing that on an SnS speedrun the canynes did 20% of the overall damage (or 25% as much), and that's compared to a speedrunner's damage on an optimised set. Mental.

    Tip for thunder blight
Hitting anywhere on the monster builds stun, However you still need a stunning move on the head once built up.
(the more popular weapons don't have a stun attack so they are limited by the blight timer)
As a Lancer during thunder blight, I keep poking and then I use my bash to trigger stunned status to interrupt a move.

    • @sanguinetales

Not true about the needing one hit on the head during thunderblight. I've gotten stuns with any weapon on any part

It's simple: Want healing or more items? Bring along a healing or stealing palico. Want more damage? Bring a Canyne. Support, bombing and fighting palicoes are basically useless. Their best skills (like fireworks for waking up monsters with weak weapons like DBs) can be equipped to healers and stealers. Only time you wouldn't use at least one Canyne (for mobility and damage) would be if you were... not the best player and needed the cat healing but also wanted to farm faster. (Or bringing two stealing palicoes, I guess.)
No damage-dealing palico skills are particularly relevant apart from fireworks, by the way. A Palamute with silkbinder deals like twice as much damage as the strongest palico.
Note I call support palicoes useless because traps don't last very long and both the kittenator (which any palico can use if they don't have fireworks) and silkbinder (which all canynes should be using anyway because canyne tools are NOT well-balanced) lock monsters down while often being activated several times a hunt. For that matter stealing palicoes (the best kind infa100) get endemic life barrage which lets them sleep and para monsters without a sleep or para weapon anyway.
