Screen time is both good and bad, the screen isn't the issue, the things they do on it is.

mom: "screens don’t teach you anything" my mind: so explain to me why you still use yahoo and internet explorer, and don’t know the difference between right click and left click?
It can be both a good and bad thing. 'Screens' can teach ya a lot of things. Even games teach you a lot. But spending a lot of time on it can lead to a bad addiction. Like you can end up being anemic, and can become blind over time. Also, since a lot of radiation comes from devices, they can make someone have cancer. Also, staying up late at night constantly for years can eventually make someone senile, and can harm the body in other ways over time too, it can literally kill people.
@@T0MMYDUDE lol nope I am a Gen Z who also spends to much time in front of screens. I really do not see why a 4 year old needs a screen (other than to watch TV).
Man here's the thing: what happens is parents have become lazy when they see a thing to look after their kids themselves. I'm glad i was raised in a time when tech was just becoming how it was today with the internet so i never really "could" get too addicted to it at a young age. while I do use the internet a lot, probably 5-6 hours a day at most if you include every device, i am still not addicted to it as i dont have a sort of necesity for it and get angry/depressed from losing it. Kids who are currently growing up with the devices looking after them get angry and upset when they get it taken away from them but also at the same time if you do an experiment like this they'll get bored of it after a while. what parents of today should be doing (as a former child who grew up with a calmer interntet) is to **NOT** raise their childeren under 5 or 6 with tech and rely on it, even if it means having to take care of them while you cook or clean. if they are literately begging you to watch tv, watch it with them or atleast be with them on the sofa and make sure they're ok and everything. as a side note: let your kids be adventerous more, let them be in the kitchen with you, let them spend more time in the garden even if its cold, let them mess the house up with their toys and then force them to clean it up as. some parents dont let their kids do certain stuff which ends up making themso bored out of their mind that they end up almost unintentionally force them to get an addiction to tech.

I feel like I did pretty well with screens growing up. My little brother and I didn't have tablets until I was about eight years old, and we could spend two thirty-minute tablet times on those per day, but I was allowed to stay on longer if I was reading an e-book (which I did very often). I was also allowed to spend thirty minutes on my mom's computer every day if I asked her first and let her know which sites I was visiting. I mostly did the American Girl doll website and this other one called KidsHealth. I got my own laptop when I was eleven or twelve, mostly for school, and even then, it was an old one of my dad's that we had in the closet. I didn't have a phone until I was fourteen, and I'm not resentful about that at all. I'm really glad my parents held back on devices because I ended up (I think) more imaginative and creative than if I had been on screens for 2+ hours a day as a little kid.
Yeah same here. Growing up, i didn’t have a phone until i was 12. Lol now i see. 5 years old with tablets XD. I think it’s a good idea to have a computer but not until you are close to teenage years.
my parents "how long have you been on that" me "3 hours" my parents " play with your friends" also my parents "arre you out with that horrible boy again"
I have NEVER had limited screen time. I have been able to get good grades. Regulate my time, to go outside, read books, go in the pool, anything. I feel like because i can be on my phone whenever has helped me be able to stop or get bored of it. I really suggest not limiting screen time because you should let your kids be responsible.
A kid I was friends with wasn’t raised with internet or a phone until he was 14. When we were younger it was alot of fun. Always outside doing stuff. But once he got a phone and video games, he has changed. He’s 19, He has no friends, never had a real girlfriend, dropped out of highschool, no car no job. And he’s ok with all of that. He says he has online friends and they are enough. All he does is lay around on his games or phone. He barely showers, and is super rude to his mom. Gaining access to video games and his phone really destroyed his life and he doesn’t even care. Whenever I go see him he’s laying in bed smelling awful, with a mountain of trash around him. And he literally isn’t embarrassed at all, and when anyone tries to tell him he should change his life around he gets mad.
My kids have unlimited screen time. As a result they actually don't spend that much time on their devices. They rather run around and play at the park. They get bored of screens.
This is so true, they find a new app/game and play it like there's no tomorrow for a while, then they get burnt out on it and act like they have nothing else in life to do anymore 🤪
My parents technically give me almost unlimited screen time, I’m eleven almost twelve and I’ve learned I’ve felt better when I’m not on my screen all the time. Even though devices can be bad, taking it away completely isn’t great either.
I started playing computer games when I was 3 and spent a ton of time playing. I am a well respected software engineer with astronomical salary compared to people around me.
I grew up with unlimited screen time. I played video games with my dad a lot. And being around computers so much is part of the reason that I decided to major in information technology and study computer programming. Kids using the same technology the same amount as millions of adults is a non-issue.
When these kids are used to doing other things besides devices, they reverted to what they know, other activities. Kids who are never regulated don’t know what else is out there to do.
It depends how old the kids are and what they are doing with their screens during the 5-6 hours. In this time period, digital technology is a fundamental part of life, and there's a lot you can learn from it.
on the last day of summer a few years ago i relised i wasted it on the internet, the next summer i made sure that i went out side and rode my bike everyday and got out there, BEST DECISION OF MY CHILDHOOD it tell you please go outside and do something
My mom was freaking out about me having 5 hours as an average for screen time but I use my phone for online homework, research, being able to text my friends, and reading and writing and drawing, and I’m frequently on Instagram but i can only go on at night because my fam won’t be yelling at me about being on my phone so technically it’s their fault I’m up late on Instagram
Alexa Nanes: If you live, you'll be grateful later that they tried to help save you from radiation sickness. you spoke unwisely here and no, it is not their fault.
@@ChrisannaKemp Don't get them ipads. They're wastes of time that opens them to addiction of many kinds. If you're going to give them technology give them a proper computer so they have free access to learn how to code, video edit, 3d render, etc. They're going to find "strange" media when they get to that age but as kids they likely care more about gaming and software than endlessly surfing the internet until they see that stuff on accident. It's the kids who learn tech skills at a young age who find success in technology, buisness, and law fields (the creator of minecraft learned to code programs fluently when he was 11!) (there are several pixar/dreamworks animators who made animations in their free times as teens and got hired for them!)
The problem with saying "cut down screen time" is that nobody offers any suggestions about what the kids are supposed to be doing instead. There's only so much outside and reading they can do. I would love to cut my teenage son's screen time down, but when he asks me what else there is to do I honestly don't know what to tell him. He doesn't enjoy reading or playing alone outside. He doesn't have any friends that live nearby, he doesn't draw or do art, he doesn't like puzzles...etc. Wth am I supposed to suggest he do?! I can't really relate to their struggle since screens just weren't an option when I was a kid and I developed lots of other interests really early on because of that. Now, as an adult, I too get stuck watching tv for hours on end. I want him to spend less time on the computer, but what exactly is it I'm supposed to suggest he do instead?
Your son is almost like me, but they take my electronics away, i ask the same question, and they just say : you can do whatever you want! Even thought im not allowed outside by myself, and we live in a tiny apartment.
Quick fix, don't let kids under the age of 13 have tablets or phones. I didn't have my first phone until I was 16, I didn't have my first game console until I was 14.
I agree!!! Like you can’t blame the kids and get mad they’re always on tablets when you, the ones responsible for them, bought them tablets. It’s important to teach children other activities and make a little time for games or other activities if they’re interested in them, but if they’re not interested there would be no reason to ever even give them electronics until they’re older
But i did get a ds when I was 8, which was my first electronic, but my parents managed it very well to the point where I knew what was a good amount of time to be on it, and I enjoyed other activities the same amount
I see no relation between screen time and good grades I know people who are restricted on screen time and will always desire it while people with no restrictions have there own freedom to consciously think.
As a teen, I can agree with this mentality. I want to be on the computer more **because** It is so limiting. Parents are scared of their kids being addicted, so they give them restrictions. Because of those restrictions, kids want to spend more time on screens. If it was a normal activity like playing outside, people would have a different mindset toward it.
Yeah, I am on a screen for more than 5 hours... and I still behave also I still go outside and away from these things is in an online school and do get bored on a screen usually outside walking or biking the main thing to do. Update: I kind of quit my video game addiction I only play 2-3 hours now
@Juece yeah but then life happens but idk how i wasn't obese from playing these video games but i don't want to quit entirely basically just limiting myself to like 2 or 3 hours of gameplay time, maybe do something else too shoot airsoft take my car for a spin etc. but at most i usually play for like almost 5 minutes when i limit myself 2 hours, doesn't make sense ik but i gotten more stuff done than before
some of us don’t care about the outside we just wanna have social interactions via the internet because we’re too anti social to make friends in real life
Yes, and the reason you’re anti-social and labelled yourself as everything g under the sun to do with avoiding real life interactions is because of being addicted to a fake ideal of living
This story is misleading because 48 hours was far too short to account for "forbidden fruit syndrome" When you suddenly give unlimited screen time to a kid who has had it strictly limited for most of their lives, they will initially overindulge to satisfy all the pent up craving from all the times screens were previously withheld from them. Given enough time, things will balance out. It's ironic that the more you withhold something desired from someone, the more they want it because you turn it into a forbidden fruit. Also, the kids probably knew the change was not permanent so wanted to take full advantage while it lasted.
The limit honestly made me addicted. Made me see it as a treasure. When I got a job the limit was dropped. I got bored after 4 days with 9 hours each day. Started focusing on art, studying, and fitness. Occasionally I'd game for 4 hours in a day, but I'd get bored and drop it. This tech imo shouldn't be introduced to 8-9 year olds until they find another hobby first.
I literally learned more than screens than in school. I knew about black holes and the big bang at age 8 while everyone else was struggling at learning about what a dinosaur is.
Phone also helped me get up my English Grades, to the point where I got an A++ on my first test because I was almost better than the English Teacher. So in conclusion, playing video games in English, watching videos in English, reading E-books in English helped me a lot.
Think about how cruel this is. Giving your child, who you brought in to this world and love dearly a gift, and seeing the smiles on their faces when they accept that gift, only to berate them for being happy about it. Borderline phycological abuse.
Ok, there are literal kids in the comments throwing temper tantrums because they think "this video is wrong and I hate you you should shut up". For those kids, please, get off UA-cam.
Parents: You can play 1 hr in the morning and 1 hr in the evening, but in the weekend, you can do 1 hr in the morning, and 2 hrs in the afternoon Me: Goes in the basement and gets away with the all-day stream Dad: Where is my freaking son! He’s been playing all freaking day!
One thing is for sure. Someone who spends their time online will be way smarter than the average human. You see it with the younger generation. They are way smarter than boomers who grew up without instant access to information at their fingertips. I'm not even part of the young generation, but can obviously see it.
Depends. Not everyone uses the interent productively even if they see everyone else's view points. They thought my generation were all going to be coding whizzes. I doubt most of gen Z know how to code still.
Just teach them that technology is a useful tool and can be an extention for our lives, but that the real world can be so much more fun. Like playing lasertag or nervous outside
My stepson uses it 12 to 16 hrs a day even on school days, I try get his dad to see that he is isolated he does not communicate well all he does is eat sleep watch tv & phone, the minute he wakes up in the morning before school and the minute he gets on the school bus for home, his attention span is very short, he won’t even go out to ride his bike or play ball 🏀 nothing, he doesn’t even take out the trash or even straighten up his room. He don’t even show appreciation or passion for anything. That’s basically his routine for 365 days of the year, did I mention he 11 yrs old , I try to get his dad to see what it does to him but he won’t do anything because that’s what his son wants and it’s driving me crazy.
I’m literally 12 years old and I barely stare at a screen all day, I literally can’t go outside alone because “stranger danger” even when it’s a couple of minutes away, all I do is draw and improve, i play games trying to get better at them, but I mostly draw.
TAKE IT AWAY FROM THEM UNTIL THEY ACT NORMAL, AND GIVE IT BACK TO THEM, BUT LIMIT THEIR SCREEN TIME (last step you could automatically do,) (PLEASE READ THIS ANY PARENTS WATCHING.)
E rA no we don’t, I’m currently 14 and never had a limit on electronics. I’ve been able to always get good grades and have taken an interest in history because of video games. My favorite time periods are the crusades, medieval times and the Roman republic, particularly the Punic wars.
The biggest problem is that they won't eat much of they have unlimited access to the tablets. But it does help prevent them from fighting with each other non stop, screaming and getting on your last nerve. It helps reduce parental stress, which is good for kids.
okay well yeah- you gave them unlimited time, they're going to use it. what the hell? "you get to play all week" **plays all week** "oh no!" also of course they started getting off the devices, they're bored! it's like binge watch netflix, after awhile you go to do something else. Well I mean it lets them find their hobbies so limited screen time is ok
Bruh are you a kid or not if you are and live in a apartment with not much to do you have a pc a phone and things you don't like playing at your house what would you do if they took away ur phone and pc what would you do
" The kids don’t need screen time, "
'Ight ima stop you right there, same reasons as above, and also social media and screen time is the future, and you cant deny that. You have some valid points, screen time 24/7 isn't good, but that's impossible, and also (most) kid's attention spans are short and they could get bored after a while, and is nobody going to talk about the productivity of screen time? its not always about addiction, screen time can be actually really useful if your kids/siblings are on apps that help them, for me roblox and Minecraft, games I still play, helped encourage me to learn to read and type and write so that I can interact, I'm actually the fastest typer in my class because of that, and also apps like duolingo, abc mouse, etc, can help education. Screen time is both good and bad, the screen isn't the issue, the things they do on it is.
Classic Miner1 THANK YOU

It can be both a good and bad thing. 'Screens' can teach ya a lot of things. Even games teach you a lot.
But spending a lot of time on it can lead to a bad addiction. Like you can end up being anemic, and can become blind over time. Also, since a lot of radiation comes from devices, they can make someone have cancer.
Also, staying up late at night constantly for years can eventually make someone senile, and can harm the body in other ways over time too, it can literally kill people.

Man here's the thing:
what happens is parents have become lazy when they see a thing to look after their kids themselves.
Wonderful advice! So right. :- )

Whenever I go see him he’s laying in bed smelling awful, with a mountain of trash around him. my kids arent getting ipads
Those kids look so much like their parents it’s so adorable lmao
He doesn't try doing it because of that. He should consider art as a beginning to cure boredom. UA-cam tells me anyone can draw.

It's honestly easy, don't blame the technology, its the parents decision to give them the technology at such a young age
@GrayStripe345, That’s kinda not the way to go. I think phones can wait till maybe 12-ish, and tablets/iPads around like 7-ish. Edit: just my opinion.
Every time screens get brought up it always is about addiction, never about education or talking to friends.

Limit you kids time: They want to do more
Give your kids unlimited time: When you ask them to get off, them aren’t mad
This was a 5 minute commercial for a circle device. Y’all aren’t slick.
As a teen, I can agree with this mentality. I want to be on the computer more **because** It is so limiting. Parents are scared of their kids being addicted, so they give them restrictions.
