What Do Europeans Think About American Life? | NYT Opinion
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 жов 2019
- We asked young, ordinary Europeans to take a look at U.S. policies on everything from food to guns. As they discover facts about America, they’re not impressed.
Sometimes it’s useful to get an outside perspective. In the Video Op-Ed above, Europeans are shocked to learn that the American government does not guarantee social protections that citizens in other advanced economies take for granted.
Their reactions reflect how European governments prioritize citizen welfare, offering national assurances like universal health care and affordable education. Americans have grown accustomed to the exorbitant costs of basic human services, the absence of parental leave protection and the unregulated presence of chemicals in food - things that would “cause riots” in Europe.
It’s true that the United States grapples with a larger and more diverse population than that of any European country. But with the resources of the world’s largest economy and as keepers of the American dream, can’t policymakers find solutions?

Police in America are honestly not that bad.
Europeans seem to actually trust American media outlets over DW or BBC funny enough.
The BLM riots were mostly peacefull, but you would be delusional in thinking a large majority werent just spoiled white women burning down random peoples livelyhoods, for litterally no reason other than being bored during the pandemic.
Police Brutality is a real issue in America, and both sides wanted to double down and fix the issue. But it seemed like a vast majority of spoiled white people sensationlized it as some "revolution" and began acting like clowns, and destroyed any unity between any political side into resolving the issue. George Floyd was a junkie, but he didnt deserve to have his neck caved in by some paid murderer.
Imagine if the French stopped burning down government owned property, and began burning down apartments and their own people. Pretty sure the French police would actually get involved in that case.
@Ranid most of the European countries have militaries the only one that really doesn’t is Britain who technically have a military but really just rely on the other members of NATO. Also the California national guard trained the Ukrainian military which is why they are doing so good against the Russian military because they are using modern tactics on a military that has one a very lackluster tooth to tail ratio and two tanks designed before the invention of smart weapons
"European countries guarantee 14 weeks of maternal leave, some even cover paternal"... In Czechia you get maternal leave, which is 28 weeks (including 6-8 weeks before the expected delivery) and then you have parental leave (which can be taken by the mother or the father or they can even take turns) that lasts 2-4 years. I think every European forgets about why the US is like this. America was hugely successful after WWII while Europe was in shambles to fix itself. Europe had the ability to rebuild itself with hindsight while America was able to strut its successfulness across the globe. This ended after 9/11 and by then Europe had completely picked itself up, especially after the fall of the wall between east & west Germany. Now we are seeing the consequences of problems in their full light be exposed because they are being contrasted to Europe, while Europe has built itself beyond the US, and now we are left behind.
The damage Europe has seen during WW2 was immense compared to the tragedy of 9/11. As I understand your point and how 9/11 affected not just the US, but the entire world, I don't believe it is comparable to what happened in WW2. Entire cities were completely erased off the face of the earth, so of course people had to rebuild everything, as there was need for such a thing. The USA could have kept prospering without the hindrance of war destruction.
@@calinicasco1234 No no, sorry that’s not what I meant. I meant like the era of the US being seen in general as a golden savior that was strong in every way ended in 9/11 . I understand Europe had it way worse than we did haha.

In America, most gun violence is actually from illegally obtained guns. In terms of the obesity rate the US actually rates 12th place in obesity behind Naru, Cook Islands, Palau, Marshal Islands, Tuvalu, Niue, Tonga, Samoa, Kiribati, Micronesia, and Kuwait. Another interesting this the USA in 2021 was rated as the healthiest country by the global health security index. The UK has an average college tuition cost of around $4,000 dollars more than the USA. Honestly, the US isn't perfect, however, no country is perfect. I know a lot of people like to make fun of the US however in the US it could be a million times worse than around 4-8 dozen countries out there like China, North Korea, Syria, Iran or Venezuela, and many others that have brutal dictatorships that don't care about their own people or just have a low standard of living where no one may now if they will ever eat again. In the US we are glad of the things we can currently have such as our many rights. Oh and the myth of Americans not knowing a lot is quite false. It is primarily the Tik Tokers. What they fail to mention is you can get government grants for college in the USA. Idk why more people don't. Especially if you are poor you can get a grant that will pay for everything even your books and Gas to get back and forth from school. You just have to be proactive in signing up for yourself. We also have ways to pay for our health care and medical debt there are grants and programs to pay for almost anything..... I guess most people just don't get it automatically given you have to look into it and sign up yourself. EDIT: And you don't usually have to pay these grants back. Depending on the grant. Only one in eight college students is awarded a scholarship (Kantrowitz, 2019).
Of the students who were awarded scholarships, 97% receive $2,500 or less (Kantrowitz, 2020).
Furthermore, only 0.2% of students receive scholarships worth $25,000 or more (Unigo, 2021).
50% of students who were awarded private scholarships experience scholarship displacement.
Meanwhile, 62% of schools reduce institutional grants, 55% reduce student loans, and 24% reduce student employment (Kantrowitz, 2021).
Of these, 31% of students granted scholarships who inform schools of their private scholarships face reduced institutional grants (Kantrowitz, 2021).Full-ride scholarships are awarded to only about 0.1% of students (Wignall, 2021). Nearly just as rare are full-tuition scholarships, which are awarded to only 1.5% of students (ThinkImpact, 2021)

Yep. Or more likely, information does a poor job of telling the story.
