fun fact: Thorax + Abdomen are both combined the same part of the human body, we just call it our "Torso." Thorax is your shoulders + ribcage, Abdomen is your gut and intestines. If you reach the butt, you are officially out of Abdomen territory :)
Would love to see the paint job! As a "counts as" - maybe a Scythed Hierodule? They ship on a 130mm base so that's about as close as you may get. They're in the Forge World data sheets if you want to have a nosey.
Scythed Heirodule is on a 125mm base, so this thing should be like 66-100% bigger given it's filling a 180mm base. The Heirodule models do extend past their base, but only because of arm modelling and tails. The Bio-titan if it's 11x11 in is like, 50% bigger again than this. It's an awkward size. Need more nid models I guess, whatever happened to the Dimachaeron?
The Dimachaeron is pretty tall, sits on a medium oval base. This feels like it's the same size, just jot standing on 2 legs from model size. Hierophant is like 14" x 12" x 16-18". I have one, this aint even close
Yep that would be my take too. The bigger base size is just a sacrifice you sometime have to make with cool conversion like that! It's more of a penalty for you anyway so anyone outside of a tournament shouldn't have an issue with that.
LOVE! With the scale that that's on... What about showcasing some stuff that's harder to pull of on small minis? Stippling, use of gloss (chitin), or crabby/animal patterning etc. Or just anything from nature :)
I think you could continue the smoke/acid cloud effect that's on the rear of the model to the vents on the middle section that would look amazing. Really tie the two parts together and give you an interesting painting opportunity on the final product.
Yes please paint it! One of the things I find most interesting in painting tyranids is that they are 100% organic. There's so much color in nature to draw inspiration from. From the blue ringed octopus, cow killer ant, and even monarch butterflies it's like tyranids were made for colorful nature schemes!
Of course we all would love to see this bad boy get the Ninjon Treatment. The landscaping on the base begs the question of what the planet would look like and what additional details would entail.
I have been using a very old soldering iron. I removed the tip and added a razor blade, creating a hot knife. It works amazingly well for bashing. I would love to know how I can get some "extremely cheap" bits so, I too can create works of art like this. AMAZING. My military disability doesn't leave much for funtime. God bless, and keep up the great work...you rock!
Our 'Thorax' is our chest area, we call it the thoracic cavity and it houses your heart and lungs. Our 'abdomen' is our abdominal cavity and is a separate cavity below the thoracic cavity which contains our digestive organs. We don't have a butt cavity.
The naming people were consistent. Abdomen just means "the cavity where the gut/etc. is". And, insects basically don't have a Butt, so their body ends at the abdomen. Long version - most of a mammal's "butt" is the muscles that drive the hind-legs, and insects don't have this. All their legs are kinda like arms (or fore-legs), and come out from their torso/thorax. So their body ends at the abdomen (which happens to be round). I.e. the mammal body goes "head, torso with arms/fore-legs, abdomen, bottom with hind-legs" whereas the insect body goes "head, torso with many legs, abdomen". To put it another way. That's not the insect's bottom that's its belly. Insects don't have bottoms.
Absolutely we want you to paint it !!! The real question is what scheme !! Kitbash Tyranids I think need something totally custom , but with all the desert scenery I recommend a scheme like the starship trooper bugs colors
Hey Jon. This is awesome! Can’t wait to see the paint job. I’ve been saving this video for when I sit down to paint this weekend, but I ended up having a mini stroke on Wednesday so watched it in hospital instead. Lost some use of my left hand which is my mini holding hand so unsure of when I’ll be back at the table. Lots of time to watch UA-cam and make plans for minis now!
So random bug facts (I used to want to be an entomologist) but the insect abdomen isnt just "the butt". It actually contains all the main organs, much like our abdomen does.
The pose makes it look like this Nid is MOVING! I wonder if there would be an easy way to make the smoke plumes blow backwards like exhausts, rather than forwards like now
Been thinking of using them as Kitbash resources too because I don't plan on starting a tyranid army. I'll probably go in the chaos direction though. Should be a lot of useful stuff there. Also, yes to the painting video. Big yes.
Pick you up a big bag of sanded grout. It's fantastic for sand texture, and super cheap. Just make sure you don't add too much water, or it will dry glass smooth instead of textured.
definitely want to see this painted, my one critique would be that the little legs on the back of the giant thorax seem a bit off, usually smaller legs will be positioned towards the front so the mouth can be close to the food source. but that is just my 2 cents.
While I’m not a fan of the kitbashing videos, I DO want to see that thing painted in some epic way. Maybe turn it into a Patreon poll to determine paint scheme or level of detail? I’d love to see a video about not only the painting, but the approach to tackling such a big paint job. Nice work!
A video I would love to see is a yoga instructor or physical therapist watch you or any mini painters paint and then design a yoga/stretching routine for hobbyists. You know, to fix our bad posture and general physical weakness.
I absolutely love this and am very tempted to get the leviathan box just to replicate this! Definitely paint it up for a video! If I may add my un-asked for 2 cents, I'd remove the smoke looking effect coming from the "smoke stacks" on the bum of the bug, since he's got plenty of other ones without it!
We absolutely want to see this painted! Also, humans have a thorax (chest) and abdomen (where our intestines are)….we just don’t have a super thin waist connecting them 😂
Great job on the kitbash, and yes, of course we want to see you paint it! I've been using Apoxie Sculpt for more than 20 years, tried the others and they don't even start to compare. Anyway, thank you for sharing so much of your work with everyone. ❤
Supercool kitbash. Just 2 small things I would have done differently: Put the bigger legs in the back, because most insects have it that way, and keep the Neurotyrant's brain piece in, because it would make it look more dangerous. But that's just my personal opinion. Can't wait to see that thing painted. 🎉
If I take anything away from this one video it is the dipping tools in vaseline to work with putty! ALWAYS drives me nuts how much the putty sticks to my tools. THANKS! :)
You did an awesome job of kitbashing the various parts of the Tyranids, you're half way there, paint it up! I'm sure it will be a stunning piece, but I don't know much about the Tyranids to know how it'd be used in the game.
Usually I complain when a kitbash video doesn't prime at the end, since I feel the models don't really look cohesive until they're a uniform color. This one genuinely looks like you put together a kit intended to be built into this, though. Still, with only the thin leggy tips keeping it on the base, I don't know how confident I'd be actually playing a game with it. He'd probably live on a shelf forever in my house.
Should have watched this when it was on my recomendations, I had to look for it and Im glad I did. I think that what you did there really helped the siloette of the original design, which looked kinda derpy to me with its tiny lowslung front end. Nice job
Great build! I would recommend that you remove the “smoke” from its abdomen. It will visually distract from the head - and removing it would also take away the strong resemblance to the original kit.
Awesome job. Looks like it is hiking its leg to take a piss. I wonder if Tyranid Warhammer players from another planet kitbadh the space marines into a big hooman.
I absolutely adore this model, and I would love to see it painted, either as a custom hive fleet or as a Gorgon model. In any case, I was struck by inspiration and gave this thing a name. Even the Casteferrum Dreadnaughts deployed against it received significant structural damage. The talons and tentacles that surround the head of the Myrmodin allow it to eliminate multitudes of its prey, rending Ceramite and flesh from bone and squeezing prey into paste, before simply separating its jaw to swallow the remains whole. A series of vents along the abdomen of the Myrmodin's body, as well as across the thorax, can release highly corrosive and toxic gases, which seemed to have a somewhat empowering effect on any lesser bioforms nearby, sending the xenos into a blood frenzy and inflicting far more damage than they normally would have. A thorough autopsy is required.
Of course we want to see you paint it, that's why we are here dude, your Kit Bashes are EPIC!!!!!!!
Heck jah
I'm still waiting for the last bits bash to be painted.
Yes paint it, And my be a give a way
Nah, grey tide forever! (Yes, this is called sarcasm)

This is what I’ve been doing for years, building a fleet of little spaceships from spare bits. Love kitbashing!
I mean, of course! Your kitbashed models are always amazing! Would love to see it painted!
The naming people were consistent. Abdomen just means "the cavity where the gut/etc. is". And, insects basically don't have a Butt, so their body ends at the abdomen.
