I do think the effect on the barrels turned out alright! However it feels less like a muzzle flash and more like the glow of the hot barrel to me. You could accentuate that by adding the effect over the first half of the barrels too!
Did you know that Ghazghkull wasn't supposed to kick that Ultramarine helmet and when he did he broke his toe? But they kept filming so his reaction is genuine
Really liked this approach and the mindset behind it! Made me want to paint something this way just to try it out and see the result! Would love to see you show it off again on something with more curves and not as commonly seen looking as roughed up.
I love how you mention your inspiration for the style you're going for then proceed to elevate the style by showing more restrain in the scratchiness and the griminess. Your interpretation is full of intricacies without becoming overwhelming. Great Job!
I've tried this paint style on my own and I really like the way it makes my minis look. Just like Brent from Goobertown says, "paint bravely." I heard that and just decided to hack and slash, loved the results and have been working on refining it.
I like the way you speak about painting. The Exact same thing happened more than 100 years ago with modern vs classic painters. It's cool to see the same story happen on the miniature painting. Maybe that in 10 years we will let our miniatures in abbadon black to mimic Pierre Soulages paints!
The idea of getting good results and enjoying your painting by relaxing more is so true. Fussing about getting every last detail done "the right way" is a trap for a lot of us. The muzzle flash doesn't look bad either, but some smoke and/or flames from the barrels would really sell the idea they're churning out hot death. I know there's a few 3rd party companies that sell physical muzzle flashes for smaller stuff like bolters but I wouldn't be surprised if there's bigger ones suitable for artillery etc that would work on Ghazkull.
This is exactly the kind of approach I use in digital painting I don't know why I didn't think of it before, actual lighting base colors for shadows instead of pure white or black for shading and highlights
I am really into this style dark and dirty,”grimdark “ ,”war torn” and I am glad to see some more mainstream painter showing us how to paint this way. Love the video keep it up
I really liked the sentiment at the end, that painting is minis is also about fun. Keep going Jon! Even if I didn't find the time to slay the grey, your videos keep me intrested in the hobby at least.
Just painted my first GW model in months after painting mainly bust and smaller company minis. This look is what I was going for but didn't quite get there. But I'll be using this video for reference in future
I wasn't sure how I felt about the muzzle flair but then you did the second pass wit the rotating shots it really draws your eye really nicely. Looks real nice.
For the barrels, and I can only recommend it because i've seen it done by people who love to go all out on overheated looking metallics, is to try a thin layer of purple and blue with some silver, to give it that strange transition that heat produces over metal (maybe that's more a flamethrower thing? I dunno..) ...other then that, I can say that this style is just the sort of crisp and in your face that I can really appreciate for a display model. will definitely try those brush scratchings.
Thanks, Ninjon! Most of this was pretty awesome. And special thanks for not just throwing another slapchop video at me. Algorithm has me drowning in them.
Damn Jon... I hadn't watched any of your stuff in a while (took about a year off from painting) and I just wanted to say the quality of your videos has really improved. This was such a cool guide and I want to try this now with some of my bigger models I have yet to tackle. Not sure how it's gonna translate over to Craftworld Eldar, but I guess we'll see lol. Thanks for the video!
This is so sick. My style of painting is “bad and barely coherent” but I did something similar recently with a Cursed City Mini and it was really nice to have a no pressure approach to painting a mini.
I actually tried something very similar on cloth recently. Not perfect but still very satisfying for my limited skills. I feel vindicated seeing a great painter like you promoting this technique
Ghazkull is genuinely one of the coolest Ork models out there, and the amount of painting possibilities you can do with him is honestly astonishing. Saw a few Ghazkulls online that have genuinely blown me away!
I'm glad I saw this, just started on my Tau, it's my first army so I've never painted minis before. I already knew, though, that I didn't like the clean sterile look of Tau paint and much prefer the very gritty and war torn examples I've seen online, so this was a great little guide to help direct me properly!
I've recently adopted this messy painting style after watching a load of richard grays videos and have been having lots of fun with it. Its nice to see it here too and find that your experience with it is similar to mine.
I'm no professional level painter, but what I do is put down my base color, then highlight with a much brighter color. Then I tie it together by putting a layer of contrast paint over it. Specifically for my current 40k color scheme, I basecoat purple, put a medium red over it, highlight raised edges with a red bordering on orange, then hit it with a dark red contrast paint.
Thanks for making these videos Jon, I sincerely appreciate them. You have thought me a whole lot brother. Now... teach me the secret of painting those banners and shields right. :)
I didnt like the effect on the barrels in isolation but as a part of the overall effect it looks really good. Nice technique, will be interesting to see you develop / expand it over time. Good Video, thanks Jon.
Damn I love this! More videos with this paint style please! If GW wasn't so expensive, you'd have inspired me to finally try my hand at painting minis!
Ghaz is a great model :) I also love the squighog boys...for a long time I was against them because my idea of the scope of squigs was from fantasy, but I've started to really love their look, and the variety of squigs that exist.
That double bird 🤣😂🤣 You sir, are my kind of irreverant. The model is gorgeous, and i feel like this "rougher" not so smooth style is perfect for da Boyz, thanks for showing off stuff some of us might not otherwise try 👍👍
So right about going with those crazy ideas, working on some chaos guardsman and was super bored with the way they were turning out. So this morning I had the idea that they are chaos guy's hanging out on a Blackstone fortress. What if they were being corrupted by some kind of alien fungus? So now I done a fairly okish test model with multi coloured spots, feeling nice and creepy. Not for everyone but after years of doing this hobby it's important to find ways to make it interesting, those weird ideas are "the way."
I love this. I enjoy a lot of mini-painting UA-cam, but I get the most excited for this type of video from you. Also, more Ork videos sounds fun. Love their aesthetic, and would like your take on an army of them over time.
I will be honest: Before the red was added, the effect on the gun looked like a drunk kid did it. Bit as soon as you added the glow and the tittle bright highlights, I absolutely loved it. I will try this on my Grand Nutta. (That's a proxy Ghazgull, not what you think)
Good stuff, but a note on the muzzle flash effect: the fireball that causes it has volume, all of which has luminosity. You can better sell the effect by treating it like OSL, even if the object isn't immediately present. Underplaying the effect kinda makes Ghazzy's shoota look weedy, and gittish...
i think also if you do have an idea and you want to try something new like the muzzle flash. doing like a quick image search is a super needed. i did my great unclean one and i know i wanted like necrotic intestines. so i looked up how cow guts are when they are left out. super handing knowing that intestines have a milky outer membrain covering them. so i replicated it........ over like 400 layers >.>
Nice idea with the muzzle flash, I tried something similar recently on some Inceptor exhausts and I was really happy with it even though it was a bit scary to try ✌ PS. The whole idea of freeflowing the highlights looks really fun and relaxing to me. One thing I wonder/worry about as a beginner building an army is how much I can experiment between units vs. making them look like a cohesive force, but my first 10 done traditionally look fine next my more recent slap chop units, so I guess there's more room to experiment than I might think 😊
Sniffing glue fumes is the key
I agree 🙏
And snorting resin dust. Ultimate stimulant
I can't argue with that..... 😂😂😂
Petrol
🤤Mainlining mineral-spirits.
That cut from the thumbs up was just chef kiss
I do think the effect on the barrels turned out alright! However it feels less like a muzzle flash and more like the glow of the hot barrel to me. You could accentuate that by adding the effect over the first half of the barrels too!
Spot on. Ghaz needs a barrel change!
Same, go with the orange red overheated barrel effect... which would be a nice part of a video in of itself.
Agreed. It reads very well at a glance though.
I thought he'd be highlighting all over with the yellows and reds of the flashing weapons. Seems more like a warm glow as current, as the op said.
Exactly, I think it's a great thing to do if you wanna do fancy plasma effects but none of your army has access to fancy laser guns
Jon makes this look so easy lol
I love how you mention your inspiration for the style you're going for then proceed to elevate the style by showing more restrain in the scratchiness and the griminess. Your interpretation is full of intricacies without becoming overwhelming. Great Job!
I've tried this paint style on my own and I really like the way it makes my minis look. Just like Brent from Goobertown says, "paint bravely." I heard that and just decided to hack and slash, loved the results and have been working on refining it.
14:42 got me. I think if you had each barrel at different stages of firing it would look a bit more interesting
yep, absolutely. love the attempt though, gotta learn new stuff by trying!
This.... yup....this
I like the way you speak about painting. The Exact same thing happened more than 100 years ago with modern vs classic painters. It's cool to see the same story happen on the miniature painting. Maybe that in 10 years we will let our miniatures in abbadon black to mimic Pierre Soulages paints!
Looks great. I think the barrels look like he's charging his shoota up, really cool!
The idea of getting good results and enjoying your painting by relaxing more is so true. Fussing about getting every last detail done "the right way" is a trap for a lot of us.

Good thing that you credited the artists for the mini and the artwork.
I hope more YT people will do the same
Hahahahahaha The Tumbs up/Finger flight is my favorite part of this video!
Great video and the muzzle looks like an after rather than a pre fire attack.
Dude I love the personality you bring to your videos, I lost it when you jump cut the twin birds😂 keep being awesome
This is exactly the kind of approach I use in digital painting I don't know why I didn't think of it before, actual lighting base colors for shadows instead of pure white or black for shading and highlights
Great video and a lot of good reminders about the fundamentals. I'm particularly digging the tips on TMM.
That model is something. I've been looking for an alternative to blending, so thanks for this, Jon.
I think this is my favorite paint job fro ninjon by a mile
That double middle finger frame ! ❤❤❤
This is probably the best video I've seen in the way of leveraging a small amount of painting for a big amount of result. You da man, Jon.
I am really into this style dark and dirty,”grimdark “ ,”war torn” and I am glad to see some more mainstream painter showing us how to paint this way. Love the video keep it up
I really liked the sentiment at the end, that painting is minis is also about fun.

I like the effect on the barrels. Definitely adds something to the model

Great insights here! Going to try this out on my backlog this weekend
8 minutes in and this is already one of the best tutorials I've ever seen on mini painting! Well done NINJON!
I've been to the corn palace and it's an amazing sight.
Thanks, Ninjon! Most of this was pretty awesome. And special thanks for not just throwing another slapchop video at me. Algorithm has me drowning in them.
That was a smooth cut there with those middle fingers...
You are one of my favourite minty pintys on the whole interwebs Mr.Nin to the jon
Ninjon is truly the mini painter of the people!
I’d have finished after that smooth primer … it looked so good already!
I absolutely love how these dark metals and the scratches look, definitely gonna do this
The black armor going from a warm brown to cold greys is so interesting, I love it
14;40 Absolutely hilarious. Great video!
This is so sick. My style of painting is “bad and barely coherent” but I did something similar recently with a Cursed City Mini and it was really nice to have a no pressure approach to painting a mini.
Sneaky Birds! Good job! I love it! 😆

30 seconds in and the intro alone deserves a like. You're amazing man, love the content!!!

Jon, that might be my favorite model from any of your videos. Fantastic job!
Thanks for making these videos Jon, I sincerely appreciate them. You have thought me a whole lot brother.
Now... teach me the secret of painting those banners and shields right. :)
Hope you have a stash of Choco Tacos or a time machine. I think the muzzles turned out pretty good. Has that car lighter look.
John out here giving more credit to painters and digital artists than GW does for their own tutorials.
I really like this style and I think your muzzle effect came out really cool. Makes me want to paint a big robot.
like the muzzle flare... but i reckon it needs to be in the holes of the muzzle also to sell it a bit more.
Big fan of the claws also.
When done with my space dorfs i was planning on getting some greenskins done, going to give the a try for sure, looks great!
The double bird a nanosecond before the cut away after talking about criticism on the internet was *chef's kiss*! 😂😂😂
I can feel the fun and love from this mini. Love how you did this
The "Glow" looks pretty good but more like he's been blazing away and the barrels have gone past red hot rather than a muzzle flash.
I like the heated barrel look
I appreciate the editing at 14:42 n if any couch critics saw that n felt a type of way...yes, it is directed at you.
10:20 that is definitley too much weathering on those black templars. They look like they gonna fall apart any second 😂
Am always up for those bloopers
Bro I could listen to you talk about painting all day
I didnt like the effect on the barrels in isolation but as a part of the overall effect it looks really good. Nice technique, will be interesting to see you develop / expand it over time. Good Video, thanks Jon.
Dude I haven't watched in like a year and BRO YOU JUST LOWKEY SHOT ME A BIRD
That's it gaz is getting a new paint job
Damn I love this!
More videos with this paint style please!
If GW wasn't so expensive, you'd have inspired me to finally try my hand at painting minis!
It was kind of you to give Darrel the day off. He just works so hard for this channel to be a success. Great content, Jon! Thank you for the video.
Love this mini! Great job!
Oooohhhh spooky stuff. Got my ghazghkull to paint up, but this *_* this is gorgeous 👌🏽
That was a really cool video. I can really see Sam Lenz's style in the final showcase
This is my exact strategy to start painting grimdark. Black or brown primer and slap paint on only where it is nessecary.
I really like the result! Awesome job!
Ghaz is a great model :) I also love the squighog boys...for a long time I was against them because my idea of the scope of squigs was from fantasy, but I've started to really love their look, and the variety of squigs that exist.
I like how it looks
Another great vid by my favorite painter!
Might be one of my favorite of your pieces.
oh! I just finished assembling this guy the other day, what a perfectly timed video before I start priming
Would really love a video about painting white! Tips for my white scars would be great
*looks at my clunky weathering scratches and cries* great video
That double bird 🤣😂🤣
You sir, are my kind of irreverant. The model is gorgeous, and i feel like this "rougher" not so smooth style is perfect for da Boyz, thanks for showing off stuff some of us might not otherwise try 👍👍
Great vid. Kinda like the glowing gun barrel.
Love this painting style! And the barrels look cool!
That muzzle flare looks like a choco taco violently exited from the rear.
Once again; thanks for another great tutorial.
Gotta love those split second F fingers.. :D

Oh, and love the Corn Palace shout out. One of the best tourist traps in history.
As a fan of minty painting I cannot wait to see it in person at warhammer fest. I like the style a lot.
I really like this style. I'm curious about how it would work in a, let's say, sigmar cities soldier. I think I will try it, thanks for the video
I think you have a cheek to make videos about mini painting with that performance. I'd honestly strip that if I won it.
I will be honest: Before the red was added, the effect on the gun looked like a drunk kid did it. Bit as soon as you added the glow and the tittle bright highlights, I absolutely loved it. I will try this on my Grand Nutta. (That's a proxy Ghazgull, not what you think)

Underplaying the effect kinda makes Ghazzy's shoota look weedy, and gittish...
Hey man am so gonna try all u did I think I can totally do all that and am defo getting some pigment
I wish I spent half as much time painting as I do watching your videos 😅
Yooooooooo that title card is excellent
i think also if you do have an idea and you want to try something new like the muzzle flash. doing like a quick image search is a super needed. i did my great unclean one and i know i wanted like necrotic intestines. so i looked up how cow guts are when they are left out. super handing knowing that intestines have a milky outer membrain covering them. so i replicated it........ over like 400 layers >.>
I love the fact that you had a Bob Ross moment. 😊
Nice idea with the muzzle flash, I tried something similar recently on some Inceptor exhausts and I was really happy with it even though it was a bit scary to try ✌

Love the end result! Truly inspirational for us mere mortals 😉
