- Located in Budapest the capital of Hungary. I will be trying traditional Hungarian food in a restaurant. As some of my audience may already know when I visit any restaurant I like to get a feel of the atmosphere also try the traditional food, most of the time in a random location outside of the bigger towns or cities but in this video I happen to go for a change and go for a experience in the heart of Budapest in the city which is a known place for attractions and tourism. The plan was to eat Hungarian traditional food in the city. While I was at the restaurant a customer had recommended me to get traditional Hungarian Goulash soup and I ordered a dreher. Also while I was at the restaurant I came across customers that said they were from Italy and had a interest in what kind of content I was creating. Join me and see what traditional Hungarian food is all about the atmosphere and the beer.

Please, don"t be like every other tourists. Goulash, goulash. Go and taste paprikás krumpli, rakottkrumpli, halászlé, mákos tészta, húsleves, marhapörkölt. These are traditional hungarian foods, and they are yummy.
I’m Hungarian and I had no idea there were two variations of this dish! We usually did it without the noodles, but then in the winter time we would eat it with noodles to make it more filling!

Props to the gentleman next to Andre for finally explaining the difference between the soup and main dish/ stew! Slovaks and Czechs always confuse it in the restaurants. Damn I want a Gulyás now!
The guy right next to you was so helpful, great to see helpful hungarians around you mate! Wish you the best time until you stay here!

Videos like this are good promotion for our beloved country, Hungary! Andre, you're a cool guy!
To be honest no promotion is needed for Hungary excellent food, lovely people, great beer, beautiful nature lots of history. And I can eat Gulaş 4 times a day and I am Turkish and we are very picky about food.
@@thelight2843 I'm Brazilian, I really like Turkey. I wanted to live there.

3:53 Even if I personally feel cringe if somebody is telling me things without asking (although you had a conversation before that) the guy next to your table won the day.
Most of the hungarian restaurants bringing stew as goulash because "yeah they are foreigners, whatever".
Goulash (gulyás) is a soup, indeed, he was 100% right and I'm happy that somebody made this clear.
Goulash as "main dish" is not goulash, but a stew which can be made from pork, beef or chicken.
Chicken stew and chicken paprika is almost the same, but "chicken paprika" contains sour cream.
Beef stew (which presented as "goulash main dish") is the best with boiled potatoes or "juhtúrós sztrapacska" which is a kind of noodle - similar to "nokedli" or "galuska" - with a hint of cottage cheese.
All of these above worth a try in my opinion. :)
PS: Expert level of stew is "pacal" which is also a stew technically, made from beef stomach which sounds ugly AF but it's awesome.
Wait until you see the video where André wanted to try the lángos, and got a plain one with garlic. Then he saw another guy was having it with sour cream and cheese so he went back to have the same, and the woman put only cheese on it...
Cmon Hungarian people in gastronomy, if you see a foreign people goes to you be proactive. This is your chance the show the truly amazing Hungarian food. Plain lángos wtf.... And it should go without saying that if someone asks for gulyás they mean the soup unless they say they want the stew.
@@PhotoOwl well, traditional lángos is plain. We only put some garlic oil on top. Sour cream and cheese on lángos is a modernisation for those who do not like lángos.
@@ww1www Igen, értem, és egyet is értek. A lángos leghagyományosabban fogyasztott formája a sima fokhagymás változat.
He was lucky that that person informed him about Gulaş which is a soup and to be honest one of the best soups ever. All Hungarian dishes are great.
The guy next to you was really nice, and you got pretty lucky with him. Hungarians tend to be distant with tourists, and only a smaller percentage of us speak English. The fact that he spoke English and was helpful and active the whole time is really rare. Hope you enjoyed your time here!
First of all, I apologize as a Hungarian that, the waiter was so rude ... unprofessional and extremely rude. You were so sweet and friendly. Keep up making these interesting and entertaining videos for Us. Thank You!

Anton Dreher born in Schwechat (now part of Wienna) it the real OG of Beer, Josef Groll (who created the first Pilsner Urquel learned from him and also the founder of Bavarian Brewery Spaten) he created the Vienna Hell and the Marzen Beer types (Marzen is the Oktoberfest beer) and the Dreher family created/started breweries in Austria, Czechia, Hungary and Italy...Dreher beer is maybe the best Hungary can offer

Which Dreher are you talking about? The basic green can is basically hop tea but Bak is a widely available, affordable and reasonably tasty drink. Watch out for its high alcohol content though.

The waiter and the service in general was mehh.. But the friendly guy next to you was a pleasant person. Also the girl from Zimbabwe wow! :O
It great watch your shows because I am of Hungary tomorrow
Yes, our goulash is a thick, hearty soup that we make from the stew left over from the previous cooking, or we make it fresh. We eat two types of goulash: a plain goulash made of pork or beef, which is filled with meat, vegetables, and half of the dough, which we call pinches, and the other is bean goulash, which is made in the same way, with lots of meat, vegetables, beans, and pinches. Welcom from Hungary
Hello! We are glad that you liked our country's goulash soup so much!
Goulash shoup is full nice is Békéscsaba city is perfekt.
You should try the not so much Hungarian traditional food called Strapacska with Sheep cheese, bacon, and sour cream. They also sometimes can serve the strapacska with deer stew or similar. Good if you like good food. (Originally, strapacska is I think Slovakian, but we love it)
Goulash was originally a stew (thick meat stew) with dumplings, but not so similar to gnocchi as that one is made with potato, flour, egg, salt, etc. The goulash soup is weaker compared to the stew version which is served with the noodle/dumpling called in Hungarian as nokedli.
Goulash or as we call in Hungary: gulyás is also the name of the shepherds who look after the cows in the fields. So I'm sure this food originates from them. And goulash/gulyás as a soup is a hungaricum also.
Goulash, Gulyás called Gulaş in Turkish and "aş" means dish or food in Turkish maybe it also has a similar meaning in Hungarian. Maybe the meaning is shepherd's dish.
Hungarian Gulyás is a very ancient Hungarian dish it is older than 1000 years. Hungarian culture is very ancient.
**Scooping up every little bit of that soup, must be heart filling like the man said.
Anyone can say anything, Hungarians are kind and hospitable! :)
Meh, the waiter was really lacking. There are much more hospitable places in general, but not trying to speak too harshly against ourselves. We are just ok.
Except the government, which is a little prejudiced.
Nice video, Andre!
Yeah. For example: If you want to taste fish soup, Baja and Szeged are the best cities. The traditional fish soup of the two cities are the best. The two are different, and many people are arguing which one is the best, here in Hungary. But in my opinion, where you live, you may like the one you used to it. Where i live i like the bajai one, but this is just my opinion and my tast.
But also a hungarian traditional food is pacal. It is also a stew most often, but you can eat it with bread. Very unique and tasty.
This guy will be popular traveller one day
As a hungarian, i'm fucking proud of you how you could pronounce Budapest the right way. :D
In Polish will always be Budapeszt 👊

The service sucks.....
It must depend where you go, because I had some very friendly service in Budapest. Not too far from where he is here, there is a place called Hungarikum Bisztró. My waitress there was the friendliest waitress I think I've ever had!
I am Hungarian and I don't mind the service here. In fact whenever I travel to Western Europe I am overwhelmed by the fake niceness of service people, I start missing the "rudeness" (ie genuiness) back home.

I have one traveler advice for you: You should never get food in Capital cities or big tourist cities, if you want a real traditional expirience. I learned that lesson in Italy, where I had worse pizza in Rome, than I can buy in my home country Slovakia. Many big tourist cities don´t know, how to make traditional food from a certain regions and since they are trying to appeal to the foreigner tourist - many times, they won´t do food the traditional way, cause people from other countries might not like it, as home people. I recommand to go to the small towns, villages and certain regions, that are famous for a certain dishes, if you want a real "authentic traditional expirience".
Much appreciated 😎
You're so right.
In Italy, you don't have to eat pizza, and then you can have a delicious lunch anywhere. In Hungary, you only eat pizza in hotel restaurants. You can eat the rest of the food anywhere, you will get quality.
@@AlexAlex-zv7fc It´s not about quality or delicious food. You didn´t get it. I am talking about authentic dishes for a country or region. The authentic recipe and expirience.

Restaurants over Hungary, usually the good ones, are making food in fresh. Therefore, you have to wait longer usually. Gulyas is SOUP, but there is a westerner version stew called Pörkölt, because westerner people don't know soups in general. Hungarian food in general is a very filling food.

It is always good to see people liking our cuisine. Indeed the goulash have some variations and hungarian food usually too spicy for foreigners (except indians) but glad to hear you liked it. The sad thing restaurants usually expensive and the tourists always find the expensive places and not know which places cheaper.
I myself never went to restaurants because it is not my cup of tea but the important you at least ate some good food. Feel free to visit other places in Budapest and the whole country as well.
Only spicy if you make it spicy .. I never cook my food spicy because I don't like it that way but I have "Eros Pista" on the side...
@@msb.3801 I do would like my foods a bit spicier but I have issues with the too spicy things so I do not eating spicy things so often. Erős Pista is not that spicy it is more likely salty. I prefer the milder flavours because my stomach cannot handle too much spices.
As a former server, if I had alot of tables I would sometimes forget a beer. If the bar hasnt poured it by the time the food comes out the beer waits. If a patron was having a problem ordering in an effort to keep all my other tables happy I would have to make them wait. Possible the server is not using his time well but I wouldnt take offense. Serving tables can be a very hard job, I did it in my early twenties and I cant imagine being an old man like that managing alot of tables.
yaa no job for a middle aged man

If you drink with somebody you can use the 'cheers' here as well.
but there are many other words/phrases you can use like: Egészségedre, or the shorter versions of it like Egészség, Egi, or Egsh, or you can say also "fenékig' which is a bit funny one, and also the Isten-Isten (means God-God). Or 'Ami marad, az harag' (everything what will remain is anger/wrath)
Been to this restaurant last year. They cook very well and the staff is friendly. Recommend.
I'm a Hungary boy❤️❤️❤️ I'm love the food
theres a food translation problem between Czech and Magyars... in Czech we cook goulash which is a (preferably) beef stew and we eat it with knedlíky... but what is called goulash in Czech is called perkelt in Hungary. Goulash in Hungary is what you got. The point of original magyar goulash is that it has no flour in it (therefore soup) - the dish is made only of ingredients that magyar cow herders had with them when they spent a week out in the wilderness herding cows... meat, water, spices, some potatoes and vegetables. these cow herders are called goujash in hungarian... therefore the name of the dish :)
Well this video is in Hungary and Gulyás is from Hungary originally so i think the confusion is with Czech language haha. As long as it tastes good 👍
Correct. That's why you shouldn't put pork in the goulash soup, since the goulash feeds cattle and not pigs. The stew can be made from pork, beef or chicken.
@@AlexAlex-zv7fc technically the stew shouldnt be pork either... because why would it be? the point of the whole thing is that its beef... but 40 years of communism discouraged Czechs from eating beef because communists didnt breed meat cows here. Im pretty sure thats where the "pork goulash" comes from.
That's like calling lasagna pizza. As a Hungarian I really don't get it, why don't you just call it pörkölt or "perkelt" or whatever variation instead of the name of a completely different dish?
@@tommeiner9983 yea we have no idea either trust me... but to rename now is quite impossible... weve been calling it this way for many generations...

Czech eat goulash with dumplings and they don’t really tolerate hot food. Hungarian goulash is usually eaten with bread and it’s hot….or at least supposed to be
Also I don’t know if it’s true but I heard Hungary actually has the spiciest traditional food found in Europe. U should try Halászlé (spicy fish soup)
Our dishes made in the pot are very spicy and we have many such dishes. In addition to the grill, hotpot dishes are also fashionable here.

Goulash demistified:
Gulyásleves (Herder's soup) is the hearty soup
Marhapörkölt (beef stew) is the beef in sauce with small dumplings.
Both traditional hingarian cuisine.
When the hungarian soup and stew became known abroad, foreign countries mixed up things and used the Goulash label for the beef stew dish, as innforeign countries soup-culture is not really widespread.
So it's become the perfect tourist confusing problem, whenever a foreigner ask for Goulash, waiter may ask: the Gulyásleves we xall in Hungary gulyás, or the "foreign goulash" which we call here marhapörkölt (beef stew).
Actually the two dish is very similar in most of its ingredients.
Enjoy bro
