Parallel slide is one of those maneuvers that everyone on inline skates wants to master. It is graceful and powerful. It inspires awe from onlookers. In Canada we grow up playing hockey, spraying ice with every awesome stop. However, on inline skates, the parallel slide or hockey stop seems so much more difficult. I say "if you can turn you can slide."

When we break down the parallel slide we find the key components.
    Edging
    Compression
    Counter rotation
    Weight transfer and distribution
The parallel slide is done on corresponding edges. Corresponding edges are one inside edge and one outside edge. Same edges used to perform a parallel or lunge turn. For most intermediate skaters this is not a problem. If you are struggling with a parallel slide it is a good idea to spend some time working on your edges. The hard part of the parallel slide is the slight unweighting of the body that allows the wheels to slide. This is done with a counter rotation and compression.
Counter rotation is a rotation of the upper body is the opposite direction of your edges. For example if you are edging as if turning to your right the counter rotation would be a rotation of your upper body to the left.
The compression is the bending of the knees and flexing of the ankles. With your skates on corresponding edges and your arms in position for the counter rotation the slide initiates with a compression. Timing the counter rotation with the decompression will result in a parallel slide.
Weight transfer is positioning your body weight from toe to heel or from foot to foot. Your body weight should be evenly distributed on each foot. I tend to have too much weight on the foot that is on the outside edge. This results in me slipping out onto my butt. The weight transfer is from toe to heel as you compress and decompress.
To master the parallel slide you first want to practice on a smooth concrete surface. Start by practicing in a static position.
    Feet shoulder width apart
    Corresponding edges
    Arms in counter rotation position
Compress by bending knees and flexing ankles
Counter rotate as you decompress. Think of the decompression a pushing through your heels.

I may suggest tutorials, reviews, and podcasts in addition to that video breakdowns which you've already done.
In my opinion, you are really successful on how to teach skating. In your videos I observed that you give the details necessary. The community is lack of such videos and you can fill this gap. By doing that, people who follow Bill, will follow you too and more. So if you increase the number of tutorials, it would be great to have this section.
Second, reviews. There are readings on the web investing the skate types, equipments, sizes etc... You have all the knowledge. You have the Shop Task. On a video I saw that you asked us to give sizes of our skates and feet and review how comfortable they were. I believe you are interested, so I might think it is something nice to have. Including such a section with others would make the channel all in one, you know what I mean..
That's all, hope I made myself clear. See you on new videos.

@@StillAliveAndKicking_ It is so normal that you have kinda feeling. I've been skating for 4 years and still scared sometimes. But you can avoid it by feeding correctly and getting more carbonhydrat, by sleeping very well to get so much energy. Then you can concentrate very well and all you will need to do is to practice so much on the street or wherever. My problem was, I always fell ashleep and couldn't concentrate very well. I can suggest you to sleep very well first, then.. STREET TIME :) enjoy trip brother!

Shop Task A question here, do i tighten my skates as much as possible or not at all. Because from a lot of skating videos that i have seen their skates look pretty loose, but i don't know if i should do that as well. what would you recommend?

    • @KirraZirra
      @KirraZirra 7 років тому

I know this was directed to Shawn. But I would say yes. You should have tight laces. Bill actually put out a video a little while back talking about how he actually laces up. He tightens his skates all the way from his toes up to his ankles. I actually do the same. It helps with stability on the leg that you are putting your weight on during the stop. Just my two cents. Hope it helps. Gl :-)

It is best to tighten your skates completely but some people prefer their skates to be looser around the toes and around the top of the cuff. It is always important to tighten your skates around from the mid foot to above your ankles. This will lock your heels into the back of your skates.

  • @giampaolofini1535

Hockey stop on ice took me a month or so to figure out but now seems so simple: lower your posture during the approach with weight distributed over the middle of the skates, turn the lead plant leg's skate 90 degrees while shifting the weight from the middle of the foot to the heel, sink all of your weight onto the lead leg's heel (if doing on just one leg) or like 75% of your weight on the lead leg's heel and the rest on the trail legs heel (if doing on both skates), your hips and shoulders should naturally immediately follow in turning. The deeper you're "sitting" (butt's lower to ground with deep knee bend), as you're stabilizing yourself after the more balanced you'll be coming out of it. You'll have to be lower the faster you're going during the approach, as well. This process digs the edges of the plant leg(s) into the ice which literally scrapes a thin layer of ice off, providing gradual friction that brings you to a stop.
I don't inline much, but on most surfaces, if you do it exactly like on ice, you'll tip over because the wheels don't dig in, although with some softer wheels, perhaps a bit of the wheel gets worn off, providing gradual frictions that makes a slide possible.
Without special wheels or smoother surfaces, like on asphalt with hard wheels, you'll have to "C cut" much wider on the approach with the lead leg, and sort of segue into the 90 degree rotation as you're skate's coming out of the "top" of the "C" in the "C cut". Your lead foot should be out a bit more in front of the rest of your body, with that foot's lower leg about 45 degrees from the ground (as opposed to a stop on ice where the lead foot is barely in front of you and that foot's lower leg is closer to 70-90 degrees off the ground), and then you really have to sink you weight down and absorb the resistance from the road and your wheels with your ankles, knees, thighs, etc since neither the road or wheels have any give. The lower your butt is and the deeper your knee bend throughout, the lower your center of gravity (which makes is less likely you'll topple forward) and the more strength you can get out of your legs and glutes.

The parallel powerslide has been one of the hardest power slides for me because of the fact that I could fall on my hip. I usually do a powerslide with my right foot and use my left foot 2 stabilize myself from falling by placing it in a tea stop formation. thank you very much for the video. It does give me something to think about when I practice my parallel powerslide in the future. love the video. ;)

Try the parallel slide with the other feet. In your case, James, try the parallel slide with your right foot on the outside edge and the left foot on the inside edge.
I am similar in that I prefer to powerslide with my right foot sliding. I find that I am much better at parallel sliding with my left foot on the inside edge and right on the inside edge.

I'd say, 40/60 - with more on the front, while trying to keep the rear skate underneath seems to give more stability, balance, precision but the angle has to be set-up so the skate won't stick; the 50/50 comes when it's a reflex. Look at how I lean back, attempting to create a straight line with the body-leading foot, I posted a little power stop drill practice: ua-cam.com/video/855Hu26kvcI/v-deo.html&ab_channel=AndreiFasola . There's almost no stress on the joints like that. Maybe I'll share one day my observations in a how to one day and the steps I've used for it; in brief I started with brisk j-hook turns, then tight cross-overs (ducks style when they go in circles as a team), and in between I fumbled with attempts and I noticed that speed is not important but focusing on feeling the entry into a slide via a tight turn. The weight balance on the skate is on the 3rd wheel counting from the front of the skate.

Even when my back wheels gets caught on a rock pebble or one time I was skating on the sidewalk in a park when a tree twig fell right as i was skating there, my back wheel got caught. Научился срываться в слайд и появилось понимание как нужно смещаться, и правильно распределять баланс. Пробуйте. Автору ещё раз искренний респект 😉

I almost wore my rear wheel to a cone yesterday trying to teach myself hockey stops by just turning tighter and tighter until I broke traction and went into a slide. Couldnt get the damn thing to stop without just turning hard left. Will give counter rotation a shot next time I'm on something smooth - might be the key.

Can you do this kind of moves in both directions? When I Powerslide, etc it's always my right foot which is in front. I was wondering weather I should be able to do it with both feet or if it's normal that you only try to master those moves with one foot.

I am using Wizard NR100 frames and Seba CC 100mm/84a wheels.
The frames are made by Leon Basin out of Shop Task Vancouver. They are a natural rocker UFS frame.

But when I turn if I turn wrong or to far I get a weird resistence and if I take it to fare I fall. Basically I want to know how can I get passed that weird resistence in order to do that fast turn like you can in order to get that sharp quick stop.

Do you have that frame for three wheels because looks very strong.

My skate frames are 300mm long. I am having a hard time turning, the skates just go where they want to and not where I want them to go. Would getting shorter frame skates, such as hockey skates, be any help to me? I enjoy your videos very much, very professionally done.

    • @FlowSkate
      @FlowSkate  7 років тому +2

A shorter frame will be much easier to turn. If you rotate your wheels one to one your wheels will develop a natural rocker that will help with turning.

Ok so I can do basic turning that's easy but with your turns they look to be faster turns and then you flip your skates into an angle in order to stop.
