I really don't understand why everyone struggled with banding as a mechanic. Like there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for it in the 4th ed rulebook that came with a starter deck.
I think a large part of it was the prevalence of banding in white, which then got mixed up with flickering effects so your banded creatures were constantly shifting and stuff? I seem to remember a lot of flickering shenanigans, or else my brain invented an entire fugue state to retreat to when banding is mentioned.
@@devinkerr5474 Banding has more to do with attacking since it takes the power of assigning how damage is dealt way from the other player and gives it to the player with the banded units. That is literally all it is.
Fun banding interaction: it gives you the right to assign combat damage instead of your opponent, even on defense - and even with only 1 creature in the band. So, Veggie could tap to give one of his derpy 0/1's banding, assign all the trample damage to the creature and live to flee another day! The turn he dies, he's totally tapped out - but definitely could have been using it defensively earlier on against the overbearing 9/9 trampler. (C'mon guys, it's a simple mechanic!)
Funny enough, this is a very similar edge case to the new Alexios card in Assassin's Creed. If your opponents go around the table choosing to assign all combat damage to each other's blockers and assigning 0 damage to trample through, you can really hose the Alexios player and starve them of combat damage.
If you guys ever wanted to do a special patreon drinking episode, take a drink whenever the following happens: -Someone turns on their co host for little to no reason -Someone says "Notably" -Refers to themselves as "We" (ex. "We're going to go to combat"

Honestly kinda confused as to why “say it’s name” isn’t a card like dragon’s approach, did they think the effect was too good to have any number? But that doesn’t make sense either cause all the other ones get better the more there are… Idk
this video literally shows why not, she had a 9/9 on turn 2 my gamer, have a deck thats just Say Its Name forests and the 9/9, turn 2 you aren't to unlikely to mill 2 in addition to the one you played, allowing you to get the /9 and every turn after that you get increasing possibilities to have 3 of them in the yard meaning any removal doesn't matter as they just zoop it back out of the yard. maybe dilute it a tiny bit with some buff spells and its still a consistently better agro deck than even RDW
We didn't really get to see it, but the use of banding is really clever. I intend to eventually make a full-on banding deck, but the problem is just that there's not enough effects like helm of Chatzuk to make it consistent. When banding is a mechanic that synergizes with your gameplay, instead of the whole gameplay, you can play with it so much more easily. Good show.
i believe at 40:14 you cant tap the curse mirror form mana the turn it comes out because it becomes a copy of the creature and doesn't have the mana ability yet ... just something to look out for in the future thanks !

My wife and I went to see Beetlejuice and we found it was good not as good as the first one, but it still made us laugh. I love that you guys dress up for the occasion.
35:03 Very small correction: Zimone has an intervening if, so she doesn’t trigger at all. This didn't matter here, but it is relevant if you controlled something like Manabond to put lands into play during the end step
mfw Veggie doesn't know how banding works. You get to decide how damage is divided so you just have had Altanak deal 9 damage to the creature instead of trampling.
40:11 Cursed mirror couldn't make the red. 2021-04-16 While it is copying a creature, Cursed Mirror does not have "Tap: Add Red" (unless the creature it's copying also has that ability).
I like the idea of rule zeroing in multiple copies of Say Its Name but I think for maximum thematic appropriate and challenge, it should be limited to 3 copies.
@@alexhamilton8777 Well there's no special rule on the card itself so it depends on the format. In commander you can only have one copy, so it kinda just sucks without special house rules, and in other formats you can have four copies in your deck.
40:16 It's worth noting here that technically, Veggie DIDN'T attack you once you showed him the spell, he merely expressed intent. In other words, his word was never actually broken. You showed him the spell, and he did not attack. Both of those things remained true in the end. ;)
i think that parting gust could have targeted yorion instead and yorion would have saved nico, the virtue, and bounce many other stuff along with it right?
man, that Beetlejuice card really should have had "You can have up to 3 of these in your deck". Sure it's just a commander line... but it's such a flavor fail in commander.
While this would be a very flavorful use of the text, WotC has never restricted the amount of cards allowed in a deck to less than 4 in formats other than Vintage and Commander. And you only need 3 for the effect, so there's no need for an "any number of copies" clause either
19:25 Wait, would have it mattered if the thought vessel had been cast before Winter? I assumed no max hand size effect would just ignore winters ability.
If the same static ability influence the same thing only the newest one counts Thought vessel overrides winter but if thought vessel was there first winter would override it
I think it's so funny that regular hosts of commander shows are like always archenemies in their pod. Jimmy and Josh are always after each other on Command Zone and I don't think I've ever seen a Decked Out game where from turn one Nerd Girl and Veggie weren't IMMEDIATELY affixing their crosshairs over one another. I wonder if this is because if they teamed up even sometimes it would feel to regular audience members like they were always teaming up against guests given they are nearly always in the pod of every ep...or maybe it's just that the people you play the most commander with are the people you have the most grudges against, lol.

Why would it allow any number of copies? You're allowed 4 copies of a card in a constructed deck, and you only need 3 to summon Altanak.
I think the effect would be too strong if you could have any number in commander
