  • Worst Colored Pencil Review Ever
    I know the title might seem a bit over dramatic, but once you watch the review you might agree with the title. I have also completed a written review where there is some additional information and images that you might want to see including the Art Track Colored Pencils on black paper etc.
    I would also like to say that in no way whatsoever am I being disrespectful toward the company that has made these colored pencils. There are one or two things I think they should change or do differently but I address these in both the written review and this UA-cam video review.

    Than you for your honesty Harry. These pencils are presented so well and look really good many people could be tempted to buy them especially for children but imagine the dissapointment, they would be put off art for ever.

    Wow Harry, wow... I watched almost all of your videos and I subscribed to your channel a loooong time ago, almost 5 years ago, and I'm sure I have never seen a review title like that. They must be really really bad to tell such an "extreme" thing. Look at that green: what a shame it is, very grainy and you can see how difficult it is to get some pigment from that core . They seem to lay down a lot like the "Elios" from FILA, the worst pencils you can buy here in Italy.
    Half a year ago I bought a 120 set of "Zenacolor" from Amazon for 23€ or so for my mum. They are another relatively well known set of budget pencils, good for coloring books, kids... not aimed at anything serious, for sure. But heck, from what I can see they have at least 3 times more pigment than those "Art Truck" and you can layer on watercolor paper pretty easily with most of the colors. These seem like subpar qualty chinese pencils that bet everything on the number of colors and price

    This reminds me of my experience when I used to do a lot of coloring. I had been using better pro brands for a while and knew the results that I could achieve with them. But to challenge myself one time I bought some Crayola markers or pencils I can't quite remember. Anyway, I worked on a piece and the big difference I noticed was that it took me so much longer and required so much more work to get the beautiful look with color lay down, shading and highlighting and everything. It was so much harder to get the kind of quality end product with the cheap stuff than it was with the good stuff. We all know, there are some brands that are very inexpensive, but give us decent quality. Here in the U.S., General's is one of those brands. But they don't offer a huge array of art products...mostly pencils, small sets of color pencils and some other small art accessories. But I can imagine the frustration with an entire large set of colored pencils, to have this kind of poor quality would be very frustrating. Thanks again for your clear and honest reviews.

      General's is a top brand in every area, and the choice of many pros. I suspect many think General's isn't a top brand because of the lo0w cost, but the cost is loow onl;y because the owner doesn't want to rip customers a new one. Really. General's is a very old, very reliable, very high quality company in every area. Many pros know this, but somehow the word doesn't reach the masses.
      I know a great many people judge quality by price, which is silly. If only they knew what goes on behind the scenes, and how much some companies mark up prices, they would certainly change their minds. General's has one of the lowest profit margins out there. Sadly, this makes many think they aren't a top brand because they don't cost enopugh. Even many pros are fooled by this.
      There's far too much snobbery with any kind of art supplies, and far too little real research and common sense.

    Hullo Harry, thank you for sharing your experience with these pencils! I purchased the square Brutfuner budget pencils for my nephews and nieces to use when they visit. Very good value for price! I also purchased Jerry’s Artarama Cézanne pencils both sets are 120 pieces and they are also very reasonably priced the Cézanne pencils are about $10.00 more but are a bit better grade of pencils. They are also inexpensive that I am happy to let others use them as a step up from the Brutfuner square pencils!

      That is brilliant for your kids and I am glad they love them, but I have tested and reviewed countless colored pencils, from the cheapest to the most expensive and this was my opinion, an opinion I might add based on trying the pencils on several paper types. As for measuring the pencil, it helps people, and by people I mean colored pencil enthusiasts, to know whether or not the pencil I am reviewing at that time will work in their current sharpeners. Sharpeners come in all shapes and sizes, some people can pay a couple hundred pounds on an electric sharpener, but that sharpener may not be able to accommodate all pencil sizes, so I try to help out on that front. Hope that helps clear up your comment

    How is this different from other cheap pencils, like brutfuner, arteza etc etc. Expensive pencils are expensive because the lightfastness and their nice user experience. And never buy fro Aliexpress or amazon in the first place, except if you hate planet earth.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 2 роки тому

      Most expensive pencils are expensive because people are willing to pay whatever they want to charge. The profit margin on the tops brands is astounding, and while not illegal, should be unethical. I don't hate planet earth at all but saying that buying from Aliexpress or Amazon means you hate the planet is sillier than a screen door on a submarine. It's way, way, way over the whacko line.
      As for lightfastness and colorfastness, the first is a joke, and the second is simply a nonfactor. Good marketing is why people worry about either of these things, even though the facts say they shouldn't.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 роки тому +2

      I’m not sure why so many people think this review reflects the price of the pencils, i mentioned once about the cost and even the. I couldn’t remember how much I paid for them. Not even in the written review did I mention how much these pencils cost. The review is purely based on their performance. In all of my reviews, especially the recent reviews I stay away from commenting on worth, if I think the pencils are worth the money et because that is a subjective thing, we are all willing to pay a certain amount for products and that is mostly based on what we can afford as individuals. I don’t think I have ever said in a review that I think they are worth the money and so people should buy them. I show the price and leave it up to you guys as to whether or not you want to spend that money on pencils.
      If you look at my reviews of the Faber Castell Classic Red 60 set, one of my all time favourite pencils and yet perhaps the cheapest set of pencils based on cost per pencil, you will see the difference in the swatch and the artwork

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 роки тому +3

      @@jamesaritchie1 so what is the profit margin on Derwent Lightfast Pencils, I’ve never been able to find this info but I’d love to know it and I am guessing you know what it is James and if you can share the profit margins on the other top brands that would be awesome because it would help with peoples reviews.
      I’d also like to know what the facts are about the Lightfastness info you mentioned. I agree that people shouldn’t think they need to buy lightfast pencils but I didn’t know there was factual information out there stating that what we already know about lightfastness is nonsense. I always thought that the only people who should use lightfast products are those wanting to sell their original art, but I’d love to know what the facts are about lightfastness that make people buy them. I am always trying to learn new information about art supplies so that I can deliver accurate information.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 роки тому

      Oh I thought I said in the video and written review. They are more binder than pigment, when I did the swatch I had to push hard to get Color. If you look at the artwork I started, the layers are scratchy and grainy. They don’t layer very well at all and in general coverage is uneven and grainy.
      Between the UA-cam review and the written review, especially the written review, you can click on the images and see for yourself how bad they are. I am not an amazing artist in the slightest, but I can apply a smooth layer or create a seamless gradient and create strong values, but with these pencils and on various different papers I just couldn’t.
      I mentioned in the video and the written review that the red pepper has five or six different reds used including a black pencil from the set and if you look at the red pepper, the tonal value range is nonexistent. Even the section where I added the black, you would never believe black was added to that section if I hadn’t recorded it.

    Have you ever used Carisma Color? It's an old brand. Hard to get hold of coz they don't make them anymore. They're the best pencils I ever used, quite chunky so your hands don't ache while using them.
    I've tried Prisma since & think they're awful, they don't blend as well as is made out & most seemed to arrive with snapped leads if the wood doesn't splinter when trying to sharpen them.

      @@TheArtGearGuide found out yesterday that I'd spelt their name wrong, it's a K. My first set of 12 came with my art gcse course "recommended buys kit" in 96. I managed to buy myself an unopened set of 12 a few years ago via eBay, cost £40odd. I haven't used them & they'd still be sealed if I didn't want to smell them (wood & oil type smell) to bring back the memories of using them in art class. My final mixed media gcse piece hasn't faded too much either, it's mainly watercolour with pencil overlay for the detail of Time & Decay on Fruit (do you remember that being taught? lol). I'd given it to my Nan so she could see how to build layers of colour with watercolours that she'd taken up in her 80s as she always assumed working with WC meant flat pigments with no depth. She went off with it & had it mounted & framed before returning it to me lol. It's never been in direct sunlight but I think the cobalt & perussian blues have definitely dulled & lightened over time in places. And it's one of my few remaining peices of art from all those years ago.

      Every time I review a product, especially colored pencils, I hate giving a bad review. If I test the product on say Bristol Smooth paper and it doesn’t perform well, I will try them on at least three or four other paper types, normally Vellum, Mixed Media, Derwent Lightfast and at an absolute push, PastelMat. I have this theory that for 99.9% of colored pencils, there is a perfect paper for that type of pencil and once you find that paper, the pencils will feel and perform beautifully for you.
      Derwent Artist pencil was one such pencil, I tried loads of papers and finally when I tried them on the Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate, the entire pencil performed and just felt like a different pencil. for whatever reason, I just couldn’t find the right paper and I have in my studio at least 20 different types and brands of paper.

    I had this experience so many times as a child. My parents and grannies knew better, but many relatives would come around with the cheapest most horrible pencils and I'd hate it. They were hard (it was exhausting to even colour a tiny leaf), difficult to get any colour out of the pencils, there was no way to make a shadow or get different tones, and often the colour outside and the colour inside didn't match. They all went to the donations box.

      Hi Fiona I did a comparison review of the 100 Caran d'Ache Luminance and 100 Derwent Lightfast ua-cam.com/video/f0fEShyN6ZQ/v-deo.html if you click the link you will see in that video I show the full range of colors in both sets and the colors that look very similar in both sets. I don't thing I did any artwork in that video but I have done lots of art with the Luminance pencils throughout the channel. Hope this helps

    My first time viewing your channel but I could hear the frustration in your voice. It seemed you really were concerned about giving this product a poor review. That leads me to believe you would review other products honestly as well. With organizations donating so many products to popular UA-camrs to influence watcher's purchases, it has become difficult to know which channels to trust. Like many who became coloring book fans, I have numerous sets of coloring pencils ranging from extremely expensive to cheap. When some of the adult coloring book community is touting $300 or more for a set of pencils your swatches made most of these pencils appear to be a great alternative. After seeing your review, I realize they would have ended up in the "used once pile" because they hurt my hand too badly to use again.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 роки тому +1

      That is what I was trying to show by adding the artwork the grainy coverage I got not matter how many layers I tried to apply. I think a lot of people seem to be under the impression that I didn't like them because they didn't cost much, but it had nothing at all to do with the cost, I never mentioned the cost in the written review and only mentioned the cost once in the video but even then I couldn't remember how much I paid for them.
      For me cost doest factor in the performance of a pencil, so I think I must have done a bad job portraying that I didn't get on with these pencils because of the performance and nothing to do with the cost. I am so happy you could see how grainy and patchy the artwork was. Thank you so much for your comment and support.

    Now the question is if you just disliked them that much that it influenced your review. I've seen you do way worse artworks with colored pencils you enjoyed. For a set of cheap pencils, these seem to do quite a decent job in your drawing. Sure, they're not the best, which is to be expected at this price, but they don't seem to do such a bad job either. I'm sure your experience wasn't pleasant at all, no dount about that, but the unfinished artwork doesn't reflect how bad you say they are, that's quite a decent, well perhaps even more than decent, result from terrible colored pencils.

      It’s not really about the artwork to be honest, it is more about the coverage, how the pencils layer, how they blend etc. I have never ever called myself an artist, in fact it got to the point where people were thinking I was seeking attention because I refused to put myself in the category of artist. And it is also important that you remember these reviews are only my opinion, there is no scientific method for creating a review there is no right or wrong way to perform a review. I can only use a product and tell you what I think of them and how the experience made me feel. By all means buy the pencils yourself and let me know what you think of them.

    These are certainly not top of the line pencils, but I don't think they're nearly as horrible as you say, either. I find they work pretty well when used with a set of pencils that do have soft cores. I own a complete set of Faber=Castell Polychromos, a complete set of Caran D'ache Luminance, a complete set of Prismacolor Premier, all sorts of Derwent, and several other top brands, along with so many Chinese brands that I've lost count. Fortunately, I didn't have to pay for the Faber-Castell or the Caran D'ache, or I probably wouldn't own them.
    I love the top of the line pencils, but I also love trying out, and frequently using, cheap brands. I've found that cheap brands often, but not always, do just as good a job as the top brands, if the artist knows how to use the cheap brands, and is willing to put in a little more work. In fact, other than colorfastness, which is most often not needed at all, many of the cheap brands are every bot as good as the top brands.,
    I'ver also found that colorfastness has more to do with marketing than any real need. Outside of the western world, few artists seem to care at all about colorfastness, and for good reason. Check any large museum and you'll find all sorts of artwork that has no colo0rfastness at all, but still lokks as good as the day it was created, which was often hundreds of years ago.
    I have a pretty fair number of pieces created with ordinary Crayola pencils that have been on display for thirty plus years, and they haven't faded at all because I don't hang any artwork in an arear where direct sunlight can reach it. If a piece of art is intended to be exposed to direct sunlight then colorfastness is required, but this almost never applies to anything done with colored pencils.
    These pencils certainly are not Faber-Castell or Caran D'ache, but they are usable But, look, many pros use Faber-Castel, Caran D'ache, and Prismacolor all on the same drawing for the same reason I do. Polychromos works better for detail, Luminance works better the large areas and blending, and a number of Prismacolor pencils are simply better than Polychromos or Luminance. But it's easy to find three cheap Chinese brands that can combine to do the job equally well, especially if you don't worry about colorfastness, which much of the world does not. The only reason I use the brands I do for most pro drawings is because so many people have been fooled into believing that anything done with pencils that have little or no colorfastness must be cheap and inferior. If not for this, I'd never use a top brand if I had to pay for it. The profit margin of the very top brands is unbelievable, and if not illegal, then certainly unethical.
    I can't say I love these pencils, but I can say I can combine them with a couple of other brands and do some seriously good work. Even by themselves, I don't find them horrible, I just find them labor intensive when used alone, not unlike Crayola. I do not find them horrible, and many do use them.

    • @TheArtGearGuide

      I am sure if I used them with other pencils, as you say they might perform better, I’ll try them like that in a comparison video but when I do the reviews I have to review them on their own because if I try them with a particular pencil and say, they work well with this pencil and not X Y And Z, I’d have to add so much more to my reviews and not everyone has a large selection of pencils like yourself.
      I totally agree with you regarding cheap budget pencils, I can’t tell you the last time I reviewed an expensive brand of pencils, the vast majority of my reviews recently have been budget brand pencils. One of my favourite all time pencils is the Faber Castell Classic Red and although they come from a big company, 60 pencils for £13 is still considered budget and I love those pencils.
      I found the pencils in this review difficult to use and enjoy because of their performance and nothing at all to do with cost. I am a huge champion for good budget Colored pencils I think they are so important for getting people interested in Colored Pencils.
      Lightfastness is a strange topic but it absolutely is important if you are an artist wanting to sell your original work. There are lots of alternatives to selling art work, but if you want to sell the original artwork if you want to progress in that field you have to use lightfast pencils.

      @@TheArtGearGuide £13? No wonder I never understood why people said Faber Castell Classic was cheap. A 60 set is $30 here in the US. But I guess it's only fair, I hear Prismacolors are a lot more in Europe.

    • @spare_room_studio
      @spare_room_studio 2 роки тому +3

      Lightfastness is very important to an artist and art collector/buyer who has spent good money for an image that they want to last a reasonable amount of time without fading to nothing - without lightfastness the image will fade very quickly in an ordinary setting, and possibly a little slower properly framed with the right glass, and hung in the right lighting conditions etc Some colours fade much more quickly than others too and could leave you with an artwork that looks nothing like the one you purchased.
      For a child/hobby artist or someone colouring in books etc I agree that it is obviously not so important but it is still an untruth to state something is lightfast if it isn’t. It is a red flag to see something budget priced touted as lightfast, as generally speaking lightfast products are much more expensive to produce.
