I watch all your reviews because in all honesty I have you're the best at doing them, your reviews are not biased at all which gives me total confidence in them.
I purchased the 120 set of Castle Art pencils based on your review and I absolutely love them, thank you so much and keep the outstanding job.

The fact that you present all your reviews as unbiased as possible is what we all love so much about them Harry!!! Many other artists out there have put out reviews that are very slanted to their taste, but not all of us are the same. Different techniques and even different types of subjects often need pencils with different qualities and the strong and weaker qualities of each pencil is what we need to know to make the best choice for each of us. I would guess that many of those that ask what you prefer are beginner artist that don't have a set technique or way of working and so don't know what they need or prefer themselves yet. A great example is your review of Derwent Coloursoft pencils. Both you and Lindsay at the frugal crafter really like them, while Lisa from Lachri fine art didn't like them at all. All of you are great artists but you all have your preferred techniques and the Coloursoft don't work as well with Lisa's techniques. Pointing out the qualities of each type of pencil lets us pick what we are looking for and I personally have purchased several products after watching and reading your reviews and been very happy every time. I found that your descriptions were very accurate and I knew exactly what I was getting and it allowed me to learn about great pencils that I hadn't heard of at a great price, such as the Koh-I-Noor and the Castle Arts. So thank you very much for all the hard work you have put into all of your reviews and I look forward to the ones in the future!!! P.S. I counted and I've actually bought 6 products based on your reviews and every one has been very accurate.

It doesn’t matter which set you selected, so long as you enjoy them and you can do all the things you want to do with them, that is the only important thing. I hope you really enjoy your selection and you get so much fun and joy from them. Thank you so much

I have Castle Arts, Arteza, Blick and Prismacolor. Arteza’s are more pigmented and get close to prismacolor without the constant breaking of prismacolor. Castle Arts are slightly harder but burnish better. Blicks are buttery and layer very well. They all have different qualities and have their uses.

Thank you so very much for the time, effort, planning and thoughtfulness you put into your reviews and your work. Today is the day after Black Friday in the US and Castle has it’s 120 wallet set on sale for $38.99. (It is currently on sale for $49.99 on Amazon. It retails for $59.98 on both sites, as of 11/28/20.)
The Arteza set is on sale on Amazon for $62.39, with its usual price set at $77.99 on Amazon. On the Arteza site they are on sale for $76.99 with a usual price of $104.99.
Granted, these prices fluctuate dramatically throughout the year. But that’s what they cost right now.
I treated myself to the Castle 120 set based on the comparison pictures over on your blog. The fact they cost $24.38 less is just gravy for me. Their performance seems to be fantastic!
Thank you again!! I can’t say enough how much I appreciate you and your work!

As an update, people were upset that Arteza weren't water proof or resistant. And they were apparently water soluble and would run when people used mixed media or fixative sprays. So they're gone now. I found a new 72 set second hand but they're gone off Amazon and their website. I don't know if they're reformulating or if they're just going to repackage with a label. I ordered the 1w0 set of Castle Arts to use in coloring books and save my good pencils for my own art. I'm excited to see how they work. I don't love the Artezas. They're not awful but it may just be because I also MUCH prefer oil based pencils. I'm curious to see if they reformulate and how the new formulation will compare to the original.

When I was looking for a cheaper set to journal with so as to save my good ones, saw your review on the castle arts. As you know, pencils are horrendously expensive here in Australia, so when I saw the 72 set for $69.00 in the pouch I bought them. I am most impressed. They layer, blend well with themselves and oms and the colours are great. There are a few too many greens for my taste and the 120 set seems to just have more of those. I bought a 48 set of Bruyneel that a friend was selling to offset that and they work together so well. thanks for all your hard works as always.

Really interesting video. Am new to coloured pencils and did loads of research and ended up buying 72 Arteza and I really like them. Have just ordered the Seascape set from Castle so will be interested to see if I can see any difference. Personally I liked some aspects of the arteza drawing better than the Castle. Thanks for the review

Great review as always Harry. :D
I have some Castle Arts, and I like them, being the budget brands as they are. And mine sharpens like yours. The wood is fraying. From that, I really like them for coloring books. I dont know if I would put them on something supposed to be up on a wall, for years. But for coloring books, they are perfect :D

Hi harry nice to see you again! It's been a while. I took a break from art for a while. I'm playing around with my inktense again, and wanted to jump back into colored pencil with a new set. Unfortunately during to this damn virus. I'm pretty much broke and the prices of art supplies have went up considerably. So I was looking to buy the best cheap colored pencil set I could. Just to kind of celebrate. There is nothing like opening a new tin of pencils. Buying a small set of high end pencils would never do for me as the want for more would drive me crazy. So it's best for me to buy a large cheaper set. And I remember when arteza was sending out stuff to very small channels. Yep sure do. I'm still hoping Derwent will add more colors to inktense range, specifically those skin tones I asked about. Let me know if you ever hear anything, will you? I wish you and your family to best, stay safe!!

Thank you for the review. I am considering getting the Castle Art pencils for my nine year old grandson for Christmas, and really wanted to know if they compared to the Arteza since I already have the 120 set of those. I didn’t know which one to get him. I love the Arteza pencils, but am disappointed that they don’t really have many light/pastel shades, especially the blues, purples and greens. My argument against the Castle Art pencils is that they don’t appear to contain enough browns/earth tones and too many yellows and greens. I really think both sets would benefit from increasing their sets to 150 pencils.could you recommend a brand with at least 120 pencils that have a more rounded selection of colors?

The castle art pencils are the best pencils I've used! And i have the full set of Koh-i-Noors the full set of prsima and the 60 set of the Faber Castell polychromos. And for me the castle art pencils are the best ones I've used! They're like butter when I use them and they blend like a dream!! I know for me I won't use any other pencils for my art!

I’m glad you found a favorite. I own and use all of the pencils you mentioned and find some work better on different papers. If the paper is super smooth, the buttery pencils seem to want to skate right over the surface without leaving as much pigment as I’d like. I’ve been mainly a Poly gal, but recently bought several Derwent Lightfast open stock at DickBlick at $2.05 each and want to do some comparisons.

Thank for the comparison Harry. I'm in the same boat, found Arteza soft but somehow 'greasy' and after a few layers the paper just doesn't take any more colours. Castle art however is a much better pencil to work with.

Thank you so much for this review, I need it rush! I was thinking of getting one of the two , Castle or Arteza, because I need a variety of colors, for ilustrations, and that they were cheap. For me, it's important that the pencils have a lightfast, and I want to find a soft pencil, easy to blend, and to have lightfast. So Arteza have lightfast, its blendable, and its have a creamy texture, but you said that this pencil in the seventh layer feels like a rubber or gummy?

Actually they are not. The formala originally caused them to be affected by moisture. It has caused people into mix media to be angry. Into the bargain Arteza knew about this and changed the formula but they are still selling the older pencils and say they can't exchange an old set for a new one because they never kept track of old and new. People who complain get their money back. Still a lot of people are angry, feel they have been taken, and vow not to buy Arteza again. Leaves an opening for Castle art supplies. Apparently if you try to use them as watercolour pencils they grumble and don't act as watercolours.

Big critic going on because the old Arteza formula breaks up if they came in contact with moisture. People who use mix media find this a problem and are angry because Arteza knew about this changed the formula but continued to sell the old formula. Now they say they can't exchange the pencils for the new formula because they never kept track of both formulas. Originally some people thought the Expert pencils where also watercolour pencils but apparently they just break up when used with water and are not watercolour.

    • @TheArtGearGuide

This is why Arteza have basically black listed me from sending me out any products to review. When they first started they would send me lots. Then a contact from Arteza let something slip about new and old pencils and I quizzed them on it. Next thing I know I was assigned a new contact. I asked for a set of the new pencils so that I could do an in-depth analysis of them both and write a review.
It was around Christmas 2019 when this happened. So I asked the New Contact about this and after not getting any reply’s, a day later I got an email saying how upset they were with me that I was not adding affiliate links into my reviews.
I replied and told them I don’t do the reviews to make money, I do them because I want to and I enjoy doing them and most importantly saving other people from buying products that they may not use. But I made this clear to the first contact that I was not interested in earning money. I felt pushing Arteza Affiliate links would make it look like I had an agenda behind the review and I didn’t.
I showed them my emails from the very beginning making this clear and I also confronted them with the fact that many other reviewers were getting paid by Arteza to do reviews but I always made it clear I didn’t want a penny, if I got the products free that was more than enough for me, in fact, even then I still offered to pay for the products or at least postage.
Any way, after this they stop replying to emails about the new ingredients and I got the message very quickly. I still have the old set and will eventually purchase a new set and make the comparrisons

There's a lot of pencils that pretty much look identical to Castle Arts with the exception of packaging and pencil branding. Cool Bank, Norberg & Linden, Orionstar, etc. It's safe to assume that all of these pencils including Castle Arts are the exact same pencils, coming from the same factory to be privately branded. Of course some of these brands like choose to boost up their price point while others keep it relatively cheaper.
Arteza is a bit more unique, they don't seem to be privately branded like all those others. I think this company has really strive to provide a more unique pencil. Not saying I prefer them or anything but it's really interesting to me.

      @TheArtGearGuide  2 роки тому +1

How did I lie, I said the drawings were identical, not the finished pieces, you never seen the drawings, and it was a traced drawing, so how could it not be identical. You should really think before you call people things and make a fool of yourself.
I drew the grapes on rough sketch paper, just once. I then traced that one drawing and transferred the single tracing to both sides of the paper. At that stage, I have two identical drawings because they are traced, it’s one image, it can’t be anything other than identical. I then added color to the images that’s when they became different.
I wouldn’t have minded and I would have replied completely different to you had you wrote something like, “Harry the images look different to me because of the gaps” but you called me a liar and that is something I am definitely not. So by all means, watch my videos and try to call me out on something but each time you do, I will expose you for the idiot you clearly are. Definitely not Golden on this instance bright spark.

My speed drawing list had a video about Aliens. Crazy. I’ll have to find out from UA-cam how this has happened.
I watched a bit of the video you found and I personally don’t mention anything at all about religion or politics on my channel. I don’t want any of that divisive conversation anywhere near my channel.

I have tried to create a channel were people can come and find out about art products so I can only apologise that when you did just that, you discovered a video from someone you oppose and that is not right. So I apologise for that, even though I’ve no idea how the video got there or the many others that have found their way into my playlist, but it is still my channel and it was my responsibility to make sure it was removed as soon as it entered. Thank you so much for highlighting it to me as it probably would have sat there with many people thinking I affiliated with this man.

I do have to say that as a company I am not impressed with Arteza and how they have treated people so I don't think it's all in your head Harry. When they started reaching out to larger channels they DID NOT like to take no for an answer. I also subscribe to Lisa at Lachri fine art and she is one that Arteza reached out to. Now she politely told them she wasn't interested as she only uses lightfast supplies as she is selling her work, not just teaching or doing reviews so the light fastness of the products are very important to her and she prefers to use well known proven companies such as Faber Castel, Derwent and Caran D'ache. They did not like that to the point their people starting showing up and spamming her livestreams putting ads up on the CHAT!!!! She had to complain to you tube and the moderators had to watch out for them. And I did not just hear this second hand either!!! I was at that live stream!!! They actually did it a few times!! Turned me right off the company and as a result I refuse to buy any of their products. I would have tried them if they hadn't pulled that crap but that sealed it for me. I DO have quite a few Castle arts products and have been happy with all of them!!! Actually I just bought the pasteltint set, I also ordered the 120 set of the new Gold coloured pencils and I already have the 120 original coloured pencils and the 120 watercolour pencils and love them. Just bought their set of graphite pencils for my granddaughter as well and a couple of their sketchbooks too!! Decent quality products at a good price I find. (Just gave the 120 original set to my granddaughter as well and she is VERY happy)

Thank you Jon mate, I completely forgot to add it last night, it was getting late and I was in agony but wanted to get out all four formats of the comparison and then for some reason the links for the page on my website with the images didn’t work, nightmare. I’ve just woke up and realised I forgot to add it but I’ve done it now, thank you so much mate
