    OMG, I’m 57 and as a kid I always wanted, and often got, these!! These crappy kits are what made me give up on any type of art for 40 years. I thought that I was horrible and gave up. Flash forward now and I have my own grandkids and yes, I buy them art kits, but Crayola ones. Something that they can actually work with! Oh, this one hit me in the feels. LOL

      Yeah my Dad was an engineer and, after he retired, he took an interest in drawing. He did technical drawing at school WAY back in the 1930's/1940's, but never had a chance to do real "art". I guess he kept a lid on it for his first 65 years because, the second he retired, he came to me (I was then around 19 or 20) and asked me if I wanted to go with him to a local art class, running twice a week for 4 weeks, just around the corner from us at a local college. I didn't, but I agreed anyway, just to spend time with him. He was like a kid again, he couldn't wait to get started. When we turned up, it was literally 15 old people (60+) and ME, and this young hippy style lass with a nose piercing. She was attractive, so that was one reason for me to keep going in! But my Dad, he had prepared and been out and bought himself some art stuff - and it was ALL from the pound shop. The lowest quality, sratchy, scrapy pencil crayons - terrible brushes - poster paint style watercolours, cheap paper etc! He wasn't having much luck in the class, despite trying his best. So I took in some of my own stash - 160gsm cartridge pads, some old Derwent artists crayons, my Derwent pans. He had a lot more fun then. But he'd still, from time to time for years after that class ended, come home from town with a bag full of art supplies he'd "gotten cheap from the discount store" and give them to me! I'd smile, say thanks - and put them in the chest with the others! XD

      Same, these kits are awful and in general make kids feel like they are just terrible at art in general. I made sure as an adult to only give kids the real deal. I would rather give them a 12 pack of Polychromos or Prismas and some decent paper than waste money on those kits.

  • @kieravermeal9127

    The fact that you still made some really incredible art with these supplies proves that when it comes to art, skill determines the quality over supplies.

    • @Ninjanimegamer
      @Ninjanimegamer 26 днів тому

      Unfortunately, as artists, and I'm including this lady, we could never develop our talent using these sets. Notice how she still favors Crayola over the cheaper crayons. Crayola is a brand that works for kids. Crayola is what helps kids learn how to shade and shape forms. These cheap sets don't allow for layering, shading or contouring. The basics of drawing and adding dimension to pictures. These cheap sets don't build skills, they create frustration.
      Once we develop our skills using better products, we can use the crap sets to produce something decent, but kids starting out could not produce quality with crap sets.

    This kit is aimed at kids - toddlers! My daughter loved these kits when she was a toddler. She did not care that the paint was flakey or that the the wax crayons were waxy. As for the pens, she would leave the lids off within a hour of opening the new pack. So as a parent, the price and quality is perfect for a toddler. As my daughter got older, I have gradually spent more money on better quality supplies for her. But absolutely agree about the size of the paper sheets!! Crazy!!

    Supplies like that were the reason I hated art with a burning passion until I found UA-camrs like you. I didn't discover my ❤ for art until my late 30's! I'll be eternally grateful for your content for teaching ne how to find quality supplies on a budget.
    I recreated this kit for my neice & was able to buy her quality supplies for a few dollars more than price of that kit. It was my goal to get her as many things as that kit included & I'm really proud of what I was able to get her by assembling the kit myself.
    I would love to have a nice wooden briefcase to keep all of my supplies in though. Maybe a affordable, quality art brand will get on that.

    Listen… I have a 7 year old stepdaughter who loves to do art stuff. I’m an artist so that’s the thing we’ve bonded over. I’ve made the mistake of letting her have access to my GOOD supplies and the amount of waste no matter what guidance I give her is unreal. So now I get stuff like these cheap kits and only let her use them. She always asks to use my good stuff bc it’s so much better and I tell her “when I see that you take care of the good stuff and avoid wasting them, I’ll let you use those again.” Slowly but surely she’s learning to not squeeze out an entire tube of paint to paint three dots and to only put paint on her palette that she’s definitely going to use. Basically I’ve used these cheap kits to make her want to use the good stuff and there learn how to be responsible with the good stuff. So for that purpose they’re GREAT. LOL

    I got one of these kits when i was a child. I'm guessing that the quality has went down. But they weren't that bad. Maybe the paper. My kit lasted up mid highschool. I had art classes so I used it up fast. The only thing that was meh was the watercolor (they were super chalky) and like Rae's reasons is the crayons. I had markers and oil pastels too. It wasn't too bad.

    I remember as a kid, i was gifted a art supply case kinda like that, but, it was a rectangle shape, like, wide but not super tall, but the case was thick.
    The stuff in it was actually quite amazing, there were no crayons or markers and definitely no paper, but it came with a lot of nice colored pencils and a bunch of oil pastels and then the obviously bad water color, it also came with a pencil sharpener, it was really nice.
    I actually quite liked it, idk where my Grandma bought it, maybe Wal-Mart, but they definitely don't sell it anymore sadly and it's sad i used them all up because i would've liked to use them again, but, tiz the way of life ig.
    It is a major shame they don't sell it anymore, it realistically wouldn't be expensive even now because instead of jamming in as many cheap things in as possible, they grabbed two nice large packs of stuff that realistically aren't that expensive on their own and then two cheap lil things, like a sharpener and the watercolor, which honestly looked like chalk, I've used chalk as watercolor before and that's what the watercolor in there looked and felt like on paper once dry, which, ig isn't that bad in reality.

    I want to say something to the water color: I live in Germany and these water colors are a staple of school art class and every student is familiar with them. In Germany, gouache would be called water color as well, because here it really is just a category of water based paint. What everyone calls watercolor (so the one that seeps into the paper and is very watery and stuff) would be called "Aquarell" here. But of course these in the art box are shit quality and there really are better ones that do behave kind of in the middle of watercolors and gouache :)

    • @tymondabrowski12
      @tymondabrowski12 Рік тому +1

      Don't you have poster paints as well? They are even more guachey I think, more opaque than the chalky "watercolors", even though they were actually less chalky.

    • @andreakadlecz235
      @andreakadlecz235 Рік тому

      Same like here in Hungary, watercolor has 2 types: 1. Student quality (vízfesték=waterpaint) it contains more binder less pigment => cheaper 2. Artist quality (akvarell=aquarelle, watercolor) more pigment less binder => more expensive, also we have gouache but I think we call it tempera.

    • @xena91388
      @xena91388 Рік тому +1

      Yeah, we have a lot of water-based/soluble paints here in the US but the only paints considered "watercolors" in the art schools and universities are aquarelles. Gouache is still kind of niche in the US and not easy to find in a local store. Like if you go to a random dollar store in the US, you'll find a watercolor set, and maybe a set of acrylics, but not gouache. In elementary schools, most art classes use non-toxic paints like (egg-free)tempera which teachers can buy in bulk as a dry powder and mix with water as need or buy in giant bottles pre-mixed.
