The top coat has yet to stain! I've cleaned up sharpie, dried cool-aid off my dining table with the top coat on it. Also my table is by the woodstove, it can handle the radiant heat no prob!
First, I have to say that you have the ideal personality to present info like this. On top of that, you clearly love what you do. I somehow find your videos amazingly relaxing to watch. Thanks for this and for showing that patience leads to perfection.
I really appreciate that you show the prep work. So often videos skimp over this part and that kind of devalues how important that step is. This definitely makes me take prep so much more seriously ☺️
These are the type of instruction videos needed. Most people including myself want to do bathroom or kitchen countertops that are fastened with back splashes. I have held off on my projects because of the backsplash. Fighting gravity with the product is an issue for me and probably most other people. Many videos show a flat panel separate from whatever cabinet it will be on top of where control isn't an issue.
I was insanely stressed out and worried about money. Then I found these and this guy is skilled so I’m going to watch these and do the steps and enjoy his training. Thanks sir for your time and sharing this stuff not alot of people have dads that help them or teach them how to do this kind of stuff. If you don’t have kids I hope you get to someday. The world could use more good people like you.
You just gave me the inspiration and option of a doable + affordable alternative to what I had thought was my only option - replacing a very worn out laminate bathroom countertop. I can't thank you enough for your very thorough and understandable step-by-step video. Well done, sir!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! Please if you have any questions let us know my friend. We can not wait to see what you create, You Got This!🙌
24:43 It's attention to little details like coating the underside of the counter edge to help make the job be more durable is what I appreciate in experts like this guy. Thanks for taking the time to do that small but thoughtful detail.
Mitch you are the Bob Ross (painter) of Epoxy Countertop layering. This was a pleasure to watch and learn. You definitely know how to build and invoke confidence for the at home DYI's out here. Thank you, I will be a subscriber.
I used just the stone spray to refinish my old fireplace. The fireplace started as a dark brown grout with rust and brown stone color. Went over the entire surface with the sandstone color x 2 coats to even the color base and provide the grout color. Then once dry, I taped the grouted surface area to prevent over spray. I used 4 colors of stone textured spray, individually taping and spraying each stone, varying color to mock field stone. That was many years ago, and it still looks amazing even after a ton of fires! (FYI this is near the field stone front of house and it matches!) Amazing product that lasts!
Thank you for showing all the prep! It really drives home how important prep is. Watching a lot of these videos they skip over that step and the plastic and drop cloths just show up. Great video
Oh man, that epoxy under the front counter edge... Flippin OP pro tip right there 🤌 as an apartment maintenance tech, the number of units I would walk into with that area just bulging and crusty dusty, normally we'd smooth it out and move on unless the counter was toast but it was always so nasty thinking about what that stuff was exposed to and had growing it...
Under kitchen counters where dishwashers are is very appreciated. The warm moist steam of DW is not kind to particle counters. Any kind of sealant for that 24" wide, maybe 6" deep zone is a true kindness.
Great Comment!!!! One of my videos goals complete!!!! Thanks so much for watching, let me know if you have any questions. I'd be more than happy to help!
Another fine video from Mitch at Stone Coat. You say that this is easy, and it is easy for you because you’ve done it so much. But as I get older, I am admiring that those Quist brothers are not afraid of hard work. Nice job!
I'm watching this video I can see it this was done two years ago. I love watching this man work. I can't wait to get my products and epoxy my kitchen counters. 😢😢😢❤.
Pro tip: Sand everything BEFORE you tape & plastic up everything. It's NEVER a good idea to have dust particles, from sanding, all over the tape, plastic, etc. This way your area is literally clean for pour PLUS when you pull off the plastic and tape....no sanding dust will get in your new epoxy. That tape around sink has to be pulled off while epoxy is wet so sanding dust is going to get in it.
So amazing I wish I had the health and strength to do this to my kitchen and bathrooms. My home is 23 years old and nothing had ever been updated until 2 years ago that we put down some waterproof flooring took out all the wall papers and painted but I have had 4 surgery in the last 2 years and and everything stopped as we can no longer afford to put any more money into the house with all the medical bills. I pray to God I can at some point see my kitchen and bathrooms done.
When we did something similar to a friends counter, we let it sit for about 30min and used a small brush to lightly drag it across and gave it some “grain” look that most rocks have. Looked like crap to start with but ended up awesome after the clear went on.
I love watching your friggin videos. I am learning so much. I was raised with five brothers. I learned a lot, but you’re teaching me more. Thank you doing my bathroom first the countertop in there, then my kitchen.
I liked it before the topcoat; just my preference. I'm not going to be laying keys and change on it and I like the high shine that looks more modern to me. The satin finish gave it an instant dated look like you find in the big box stores counter selections. Great job!
I did this 3 years ago and still perfect. Hold far away. Small spritzing application. And tape everything!!!! I used a polyurethane that yellowed but fixed and used epoxy to top. Worth it.
Great job! I think it looked more like a real stone countertop when it was glossy. I’m wondering if before the second epoxy coat (if leaving glossy) you could add more of the stone flecks? That would give it greater depth like a natural stone.
My goodness you make this look so easy. And its probably the prep work that's the hardest. I've been watching you all for years wishing that I can do this to my old counter tops. One of these days I will muster up the courage to do so. Nice work I wish you was my long distant brother that would come and do my counter tops...lol
I really like watching what you have done to plain countertops. I did my kitchen counters 2 years ago, they came out wonderful. Have since sold that house but where we are now, I making plans for doing the same thing again.
Thank you for the tutorial. My house has two 1986 plain white laminate V-tops, one of which is 85" wide. Cost to replace the large one, along with its two sinks, is $900 to $1400, plus I'd have to do the demolition, dump run and plumbing. The smaller v-top is 37", but even that one would set me back $300. I think this would be a viable option for me. Plus, it could be fun!
I really enjoyed your step by step on getting this job done. I’ve yet to see a video that give details like yours. All info was included in yours , greatly appreciated. ❤️
Glad I saw this. I’m considering doing this on my kitchen countertop, which is so dated looking, especially in this age of granite, etc. countertops. I’m just not able to afford going the route of replacing with a stone countertop, which would easily be $2500 in my case. Looks like epoxy might be just the solution.
I'm so glad you mentioned that you can use a heat gun! You make it look so easy but I know that's from years of experience! Thank you for another great video!
Thanks so much for the great comment!!!! My video goal is complete! Let me know if you have any questions, I'd love to help get a project started with you
its all about that prep work! thank you for showing in detail the tape and plastic work. SUPER HELPFUL! You guys are all awesome and do incredible things with your products! thank you for the videos!
This is the exact video I needed that answered my question I commented on another video. I just bought my first house. I've watched so many hours of your videos that I feel like I got a Degree in "You Got This!" lol. I feel completely confident in tackling my first project. I'll be buying all my epoxy from SCC. My question is do you have other recipes for this type of project? Maybe different spray on stone looks? I have earthy brown/tan/sand tones in my house. Thanks again for the detailed step by step.
You are more than welcome to come do all of my countertops for more videos! My home got totaled from Hurricanes Laura and Delta in 2020 and I have been screwed over by contractors taking my insurance money and running. It has left me with no money to finish my home.
So excited to see this video because this is the exact reason I purchased the stone coat export and white undercoat. I didn’t purchase the kit because I have a different color scheme (navy and grey). Looking forward to receiving my package (which I need to check on).
I did this to my guest bathroom not long ago. I added some gold flakes to the first light layer of epoxy. It looks fine. Not perfect and definitely needs another epoxy coat. However, I can’t stress enough how important it is to wear a GOOD mask and have some form of ventilation. My bathroom is the same as this one, small with no window. I breathed in a lot of spray paint and I can’t be too sure, but like 3 days later I developed horrible bronchitis. I had it for like 3 weeks with the absolute worst cough and hard to breathe. So be careful.
Very good idea! We did one like that on one of our live shows here👉ua-cam.com/video/Rx_lUaXhD5k/v-deo.html It was one of our 1st live shows. Mitch will be headed back on site to film an updated epoxy tutorial over cultured marble with an integrated sink. Be sure to sub so you don't miss that one!
If it’s possible to do a translucent white & opaque white swirled with thin diamond dust and clear veins on top that would be awesome! I would love to see a way to plus up plain whiteish marbled with the clam shell looking sink and the stone spray doesn’t match my decor. Thanks for the idea consideration. 😊💫
Attention to prep work, detail, and the expertise of this guy is amazing, more so than the finished product, which is amazing on its own. Good job. I'd hire you any day!
As a painter, I appreciate the detail you go into on prep...... Most DIY videos would just say "Prep the surface" and bam, it's done. Just out of curiosity, what would be a ballpark figure for what you would charge per square foot? Really helpful video Sir !!
You have a fantastic way of explaining the process step by step by step, so that something intimidating like, "refinish your countertop" becomes cool this simple step." Thank you!!
Outstanding results Mitch! I need to find a project to use Stone Coat Epoxy on. I am always inspired by all the videos no matter if it's you Mitch or Mike. Keep the inspiration coming!
OMG! You just don’t realize how much I enjoy watching this video. I learned, enjoyed and gonna save money and time by doing this diy. Love It 🥰 thanks 😊
Thanks so much!!!! That really helps the video grow here on UA-cam!!!! We really appreciate you sharing the video! Let me know if you have any questions about the video, I'd be happy to help
Bit of advice. I am applying epoxy today on my bathroom coutnertop and using StoneCoat products and this video primarily as a reference. It was helpful the other day to stop the video and take notes to come back and reference while I'm working. Don't think you can remember everything from memory! I'm doing something like the black galaxy but instead with a dark gray (Behr flat primer + paint in one) as the undercoat and with diamond dust mica powder mixed into the epoxy. I'll top it off tomorrow with the glossy ultimate top coat. I'm here reviewing the video before removing the tape in a few hours. Lessons I've learned already... 1. Get a plastic notched trowel if you can. I just used the metal one provided in my kit and it left scrape marks in my base paint. More like darker scratches that are now covered in epoxy and forever sealed in (and now darker since the epoxy was applied). Although not likely noticeable to others, I will be looking at them until either the countertop or I die. 2. CAREFUL WHEN TORCHING Okay, what no one says is that if you have your flame like a milimiter closer or a nanosecond longer than what you see in the video, your epoxy will BURN. yes, it will bubble up and your base color paint may even change color. My beautiful gray undercoat now has a scorched patch where it is brownish. I can't exactly remove the expoxy, sand down the scorched paint, repaint and reapply the epoxy. I will have to learn to live with it, I guess, and good thing that side of the counter is what my husband uses and unless I point it out, he will never notice--and likely not care. He'll just tell me that I did a good job and it looks great and to not get discouraged 🙂
Another nice one Mitch! I appreciate the emphasis on prep. No such thing as over prep! A question for SCC: have you any experience using your products over surfaces painted with “Behr chalk paint”? Can I treat a chalk painted surface as undercoat and apply a clear Art Coat followed by Ultimate Top Coat?
I am definitely not a pro but since you received no feedback in a year guess it's ok to share my experience. I agreed to help a friend redo her kitchen countertops. She had a very large kitchen and wanted the faux marble look with veining. She informed me she did the cleaning, sanding and priming before I arrived. We worked for several days using 5 gallons of product. It actually looked nice. We were pleased with our work. Within 2 months she called me in tears, the product seemed to be lifting or loose in many areas and along the edges. She lived in Texas, I am on the east coast so I couldn't just drive across town to hopefully troubleshoot the situation. She asked me what "I" did wrong! Finally her husband grabbed the phone and explained she actually did not properly prep the surfaces. No sanding or recommended primer plus she used the chalk paint and sealer as her base. I do not know what brand chalk paint she utilized when she initially painted the countertops but since Mike mentioned chemical reactions (or something similar), between the recommended products I presume that was the culprit. Personally I wouldn't risk mixing paint brands. They literally had to rip out their original countertops and start from scratch.
Oh yes, I'm thrilled to see this! One question: did you wipe down the sink after the ultimate top coat or does it just slide down the porcelain? Beautiful results!
Man I love your videos. I'm gonna do stone coat for my kitchen when I do it. For my bathroom I want to do a similar thing you did here but my bathroom has a one piece stone counter + sink bowl, could I do a stone coat top on that if I remove the plumbing and if so, how would I get the stone coat to bond to the stone? It's the UGLIEST 70's green color.
Great video and very timely! Updating my kitchen now and you have saved me from replacing 22' of laminate countertop. If the laminate has a few tiny nicks (1/4") on the edge what can I use to fill them in?
First, we clean and degrease the laminate or Formica, then sand with 60 grit, next apply our bonding primer (XIM Bonder/Primer), and then the epoxy process.
Wow! So glad I watched this I wasn’t putting enough water in with the top coat and couldn’t see my design on the table top I made! I know better now! Thanks
Thanks for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed the video! If you are working with a big job that you are applying the Ultimate top coat have extra dry rollers ready. It helps to not have too wet of a dry roller if that makes sense! Let me know it you have any questions
Amazing video! Question, how does the coated countertop hold up against shower steam? and there is amazing durability with the top coat applied. I was wondering if someone wanted the glossy look and you did a second coat of epoxy instead of the top coat would you have the same durability or would it more prone to scratching? if it is more prone to scratching is there a product that is like topcoat but with a glossy finish? Thanks!
Thanks, another great video; Been watching these with my co-workers on lunch breaks, on a tablet, sharing them with the Boss, People are finally starting to move again; Apartment turnover means your products would really make an old place look nice again, and definitely more modern. Can't wait to try them; I'm usually just the drywall & tuckpointing guy, but we've all decided to join together & use your products, after watching these videos. Between all of us knuckleheads maybe we can "get it done son" !! As the older guys always tell me. Couple of my cheap computer desks could use an upgrade like this as well.
Same prep steps as this video except you will be prepping the sink for epoxy. I would take out the tail piece on your drain to allow the epoxy to drain out the bottom as it self levels down the sink bowl. Reinstall the tail piece after you apply the ultimate top coat and it has dried! Let me know if you have any questions!

Wish I would have watched this before pouring my countertops. Really good info. Made some mistakes but will be going back and doing another pour and fixing them.

You did a great job🎉and doing it for little sister❤its AMAZING...your Mom must be so proud of both of you kids 😊
Love that you did this video! Can you please next do a countertop & sink with a integrated sink in the countertop? Thank you 💫
Very good idea!
Yes! I'll use another color scheme too. What colors should I use?
@@mitchquist I have one locally if you want it...;)
If it’s possible to do a translucent white & opaque white swirled with thin diamond dust and clear veins on top that would be awesome! I would love to see a way to plus up plain whiteish marbled with the clam shell looking sink and the stone spray doesn’t match my decor. Thanks for the idea consideration. 😊💫
Just what I needed to give me the confidence I need. I am planning to do my kitchen countertops. Thank you for a simple to follow video.
Primo fellas, absolutely mint!👌
Big upgrade to this old school vanity! Thanks for watching Adam!
Thanks Adam!
My problem is the math works out to be more expensive than total replacement.
Great feedback! Thanks for taking the time to leave such a great comment! We appreciate you - You Got This!
I agree with this 100%
Thanks so much! I love this comment
OMG! You just don’t realize how much I enjoy watching this video. I learned, enjoyed and gonna save money and time by doing this diy. Love It 🥰 thanks 😊
I'm sharing this to face book. Dam you rock bro
Thank you so much for your support🙌💪 We would love to see your work
Thanks so much!!!! That really helps the video grow here on UA-cam!!!! We really appreciate you sharing the video! Let me know if you have any questions about the video, I'd be happy to help
That is how its done...great prep.well application. Fantastic result. 11/10
Love watching your amazing talent.
Could the color be changed? Thanks
Ok you just answered my question
Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching! Let me know if you have anymore questions, I'd be happy to help!
👍☝️👌💪
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment this really helps the videos grow! Have you worked with epoxy yet for a project?
Love your tutorials my only regret is not having and instructor like you in School! Thank you for what you do :)
Amazing work and results!! Question... would it have been possible to paint the sink to match the vanity top? Thanks!
How is the “top coat” different from the uncoated epoxy? Is it harder? Is it used on flooring as well?
This is so calming, it’s like listening to Bob Ross narrate as you watch
I have been watching all kinds of SCC vids and you have the best instructional vids for us home diy’ers! Thanks!
Oh yes, I'm thrilled to see this! One question: did you wipe down the sink after the ultimate top coat or does it just slide down the porcelain? Beautiful results!
I used just water on a paper towel. The Ultimate Top Coat cleans up with water while still wet
@@mitchquist thank you!
@@dawndue6503 you're welcome 😊
What a pleasure that was to watch. I swear if one more DIY remodel comes up in my feed...... this was refreshing to say the least 😅
Actually did just this to a crappy kitchen counter about two months back. Painted black, used this awesome Marble spray, epoxy then Ultimate Top Coat.
Great to hear! How are you liking living with the new tops?
THIS IS EPIC
Ayyyyy

Thanks MemeDragon69!
He's really good at the prep work..that takes the most time.
Thanks
Hope that helps!! It makes it easier to mix and roll out as well
Make it thinner like latex paint rather than elmers glue! You Got This. Add up to 10% water by volume of top coat mixed
Thanks for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed the video! If you are working with a big job that you are applying the Ultimate top coat have extra dry rollers ready. It helps to not have too wet of a dry roller if that makes sense! Let me know it you have any questions
I like the shiny look before adding the UTC. Is the top coat necessary? Or is there a way to keep it shiny?
I preferred it when it looks glossy too.
Loved the video. God bless you and your family. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks!
Thanks, another great video;
Been watching these with my co-workers on lunch breaks, on a tablet, sharing them with the Boss,
People are finally starting to move again;
Apartment turnover means your products would really make an old place look nice again, and definitely more modern.
Not sure if I'll ever do this..but wanted to thank you for your detailed instructions and showing what looks like in a real..lived in bathroom ❤
Nice video
Love how beautiful they are and your not adding to our garbage problem ❤
Great vid👍I also have the marble look, non-formica single piece combo molded sink/countertop..same process ❓
@@StoneCoatCountertops 👍gotcha, thx...yeh, sure don't want a sticky tail piece, lol...n will definitely mask the drain hole tooooo😊✅🤞🤞🤞
Dude, you look just like Bill Bergey!

What a beautiful turnout! Nice to see somebody take time and pride in their work thank you so much!
Wish you would show how to use your product on tile. Would you have to apply a cement base on the tile first?
Here's a tile floor we did! Yes you'll want to level quick first.
ua-cam.com/video/WJXfqzH3JwU/v-deo.html
New on-site Epoxy over tile video will be getting filmed early to mid December! Hang tight and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss that one! I'm going to turn the front edge into a rock-faced edge with bondo then fill the grout lines and apply level quick and you'll never know you had tile countertops down below. What type of sink do you have?
@@mitchquist undercount
@@durangarc You can keep that sink in place and still pour epoxy if you'd like
