- The keyfob for my 2018 GMC Terrain needed to be replaced and it turns out to be an easy process if you have two working remotes. This process works for lock, unlock, proximity and remote start. You should also have the emergency key cut by a locksmith if you are adding a new key, not just replacing an old key.

I have 3 key fobs and I can't get the key out of any of them no matter how hard I try. Are you pushing on the black buttons on the side? Thanks...David
@.David Gardner Yes sir, there is a release button on the side of the fob that must be depressed while pulling the key. If it’s never been removed it can be really stuck in my experience.
My GMC keys has no remote start button when we got it. I wonder if I program a key that has 5buttons will the remote start button will work after I program it? Thanks.
@Ronron Monzon That’s a really good question. Remote start has been standard on most GMCs for several years so it’s likely that your vehicle has it. Programming a new key fob with the correct button might well activate it. It’s worth a try!

@DougForce is programming the same if you have (1) working remote? I have a 2019 GMC Denali and when I factory reset by infotainment system the other remote stopped working.

I must have messed up during the initial process, now the service theft deterrent system is popping up and I can’t get my truck to start. 2021 GMC Sierra. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
@jslucasl2498 I’ve not heard of that happening but you may still be in ‘programming’ mode and you can’t start the car in that mode. Did you hold down the start button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode? It should time out on its own after awhile holding Start 12 seconds should exit that mode. Let me know if that helps.

Will this work on a 2018 gmc sierra? I have a regular key and no start button.a regular ignition mounted on the column ? Thx
@TheJcrandazzo Unfortunately no, if you have a column mounted key ignition these options done work.

Good morning (here)! Yes, this same process applies to the 2020 Terrain as well. It took just a few seconds for the programming, I’d say 10 seconds or so after hitting the Start button.
@@DougForce Didn't take into account the time difference. Thanks for the answer. I watched your video, but I can't bind the 3rd key. There are 2 staff members. I wanted to bind a 3 key with an autorun button. I bought the key from aliexpress. The frequency is 315 MHz, if the Chinese did not deceive.
I’d be suspicious of the third key fob if the second fob was added successfully. It could be a fob battery issue or a defective or incomplete fob duplicate. You might pick up a fob from Amazon or other source to see if that resolves the issue. That way you could return it if not the issue. I have 3 fobs for my Terrain so I’m sure it will accommodate 3 fobs…..

Do you have to have the new key cut before you can program the fob if you already have one cut?
@Karen Thurston You do not have to have the new key cut if you already have one. I just swapped the old metal key into the new fob.

@Karen Thurston Glad to help! I kept the old key fob with the uncut metal key as a backup but if I was to ever carry it again I’d be sure I had the cut metal key with me just in case.
How do you add the new key fob if you only have 1 key?

@Tina Hall What year vehicle? I believe it does have to be this style keyfob….
@@DougForce its a 2012 Acadia SLT. I’d prefer to get the fob with key already in it. I see them for sale on eBay for under $20. It states you can program the fob aspect of it, then have someone cut the key for you. If true, that’s GREAT! Not paying $500.00 or more to have a dealership do it. Thank you for replying
@Tina Hall It’s probably the same procedure on the Acadia but you might search for videos on that model to be sure. You can definitely get the key fobs fit $20-$40 and then have the key cut at a locksmith. The dealer wanted $350 for this model fob, I spent less than $80 on one from Amazon and having the key cut. Much better!

Yes, you can use an old GMC controller from another car as long as it’s the same model of keyfob. I’ve not done this but I’ve read it dues work. Good luck!

What if you’re trying to program your key fob and your car goes blank and your push start doesn’t work.. what should i do
@Kimberley B I’ve not heard of that happening. I’d suggest checking the car battery to be sure it’s fully charged, as well as the batteries in the fobs. Is this a GMC?
@@DougForce my battery is new and my key fob is brand new I think I’m not doing it right and that’s why my car won’t start when I push start

@Kimberley B - Did you hold down the Start button for 12 seconds to cancel the programming mode? There is no display or sound during that 12 seconds….
@Kimberley B Sounds like you were still in programming mode, glad you figured that out! The process can be finicky but I bet you can get it, just follow each step in detail. Good luck!
What if the key of the only fob I got is not cut?
If you only have an uncut key from the fob them you must get the key cut first you by a locksmith or a dealership. Locksmiths are probably cheaper. You must have a cut key to enter programming mode to add new fobs.

I am sorry to say that this did not work on my 2021 GMC Terrain . I did the first step (emergency key clicked 5 times open door) then the Remote Learning Pending Please wait came on. Timed 10 minutes. When I came back, it was blank. Tried again, nothing. Started the engine, closed the engine, opened the door closed the door, did the 5 clicks w/emergency key did then 10 minutes, same thing. SO I tried again this time sat in the car, and the display went off in 10 seconds. Someone said I need a scan tool and correct software to program a new fob have to go to dealership. Not wanting to do that.
@user-ou1ll9qb6s I know that’s frustrating but I don’t think you need to go to dealer. Not sure why you have the results you did but I’m assuming you only have 1 working key? I watched it over and over.The vehicle is not doing the same thing. The 2021 terrain should be the same as the 2020 no?@@DougForce
Yes, it should be the same. I have not heard of thaat happening before. I'll check around for ideas....
Dose any one know how to unprogram a key fob
@forsakensouls I could be wrong but I believe the car is programmed to recognize the fob, not the other way around. So you don’t clear the fob, you just program the car to accept it. You delete the fob from the car if you no longer want the car to accept it.
That is not programming the key fob that's programming the key
@Warren Matthews Just trying to minimize confusion between referencing the fob and the actual metal key which is stored in the fob.
