1. Remove the key lock cylinder cap. Insert the GMC Terrain emergency key into the key lock cylinder on the driver door handle; then turn the key counterclockwise, to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. The Driver Information Center(DIC) displays REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
2. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button. (You may have to open and close drivers door to see the DIC display). The DIC display will again show REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
3. Repeat Step 2 two additional times. After the third time all previously known transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. The DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button. (You may have to open and close drivers door to see the DIC display). Remaining remote key fobs can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE # 1.
4. Place the new smart key fob in the GMC Terrain's cupholder .
5. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the key fob is learned, the DIC display will show that it is ready to program the next remote key fob.
6. Remove the remote key fob from the transmitter pocket and press unlock or lock on the remote key fob.
To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 4-6. When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

2018 GMC Terrain ( SL, SLE, SLT and Denali )
2019 GMC Terrain ( SL, SLE, SLT and Denali )
2020 GMC Terrain ( SL, SLE, SLT and Denali )
2021 GMC Terrain ( SL, SLE, SLT and Denali )
2022 GMC Terrain ( SL, SLE, SLT and Denali )

Dude, you rock. This procedure worked first time on my 2018 Acadia. By the way, while it’s probably advisable to get the 2nd key cut, you don’t have to. I have one FOB (original) with key cut, and new FOB with blank, and both FOBs work now after this procedure. However, I do plan on getting the 2nd key cut, because you never know, if you lose that one FOB, you will be SOL on the next re-program and end up paying big $$$ at dealer. Thanks!

Can confirm this works on a 2023 Terrain
Failed on the 2024 terrain. It s not getting into the programming at all, and I made sure that turning the key counterclockwise 5 times within 10 seconds even much less. Any advise. Note that the same process is dictated in the manual.

OK. I bought a replacement online from a supplier and it didn't work. Car would not start since I only programmed one FOB. It kept saying ready for next key. I would have to keep pressing the start button for 12 seconds to get out of key program mode in order to get the car to turn on. I ordered an original FOB from dealer. As soon as I unlocked the car and opened the driver side door, it said ready for next key. Put new FOB in cup holder and pushed start button. Key was programed. Held start button for 12 seconds. Key programing complete. All is,working fine now. Thanks for the video. Great tutorial.
If I have an existing key for my 2018 Terrain SLT that was totaled and just bought a 2020 Terrain Denali can the 2018 key be re programmed to work in the newer vehicle?
No - these keys lock to a vehicle once programmed and need to be unlocked by someone with the correct equipment before they can be programmed to a different vehicle

Yes - if your Sierra has push button start. The only difference is instead of placing the fobs in the cupholder, you need to place them in the transmitter pocket in your center console

I'm not aware of any back door programming procedures. This should work every time if done properly with the correct remote - you can also find this procedure listed in your owners manual.

Okay sorry for bugging you this much but I bought that Acadia damaged just to give you a better idea and the steering wheel airbag is popped out of it and I'm still putting the front end together I bought the two fobs cut the key put the key in my door cylinder ignition turned it five times counterclockwise and it did not pop up on the dash programming mode could it be that the vehicle still has the airbags popped out which gives it codes and it won't let it program the fobs? or maybe there is another issue

My 2018 Terrain automatically locks whenever I walk away from the car. When it is in programming mode, will it still do that? Is it OK to sit in car while you are waiting. Should both keys be inside car during programming. Or should you leave one out while programming the other?
I believe when the vehicle is in programming mode it will override the auto lock feature. Yes, you can sit in the car if you would like. Opening or closing the drivers door doesn't effect programming sos it doesn't matter if you are in or out. You can have both keys with you - I assume by both you mean one is programmed and one is not

Question, if you are just adding 1 fob and you already have a working fob, do you have to reset your 1st fob??? I would feel more confident in doing this if the 1st fob can keep its programming....
Yes - you will need to reprogram your original during the procedure as it will be erased.

You will only need to buy 1 additional. The original can be re-programmed to count as one of the two total that you need.
2021 Terrain with 5 button the same? Just using the "unlock" to program the additional fob? That will enable all functions on the 5 button like the original? Great video by the way!
Yes, the 5 button will be the same programming procedure. As long as your vehicle originally used a 5 button remote, then the new 5 button remote should function just as the original

You can program a used key fob but it needs to have been unlocked or "flashed" by someone with the correct equipment. These fobs lock to a vehicle once programmed and need to be unlocked before they can be programmed again to a different vehicle.

As long as it is the correct fob for the vehicle any of them can be programmed as shown in the video. The problem with most of the fobs found online is they are aftermarket and not OEM, the aftermarket fobs tend to have more issues in general then the OEM ones. check out bit.ly/CarAndTruckRemotes They have both aftermarket and OEM ( original ) options

Yesterday I did check out the link provided, and when I did the live chat I asked if I could program the fob and the response was that a dealer or locksmith needed to do it. All the people that I know that unlock them only do wholesale ( large quantities ) so I honestly don't know how cost effect it is to get them unlocked vs. just buying a new one

You just need at least 1 cut emergency key - you can do it without cutting the new one
I Purchased 3 Smart keys (Truck/1396 433m/435451, Exact Same Model Numbers as my current Fobs) to add to my truck that has 2 keys already. I have Tried Everything from the standard procedure like what you have done in this video as well as through the MDI Programmer and Immobilizer relearn with all key relearn and my original keys are the only ones to program. The Seller said 2 keys was new from GMC, the 3rd was their lost keyfob that the 2 was to replace but he ended up trading the vehicle in leaving him with the 2 that was ordered by vin# from GMC that was never Programmed to their truck and later ended up finding their lost remote. So what I'm getting at, Does these remotes need to be reset to allow reprogramming to a new VIN/BCM? Under the MDI tool, Diag says the Transponder was not visible? Batteries have been replaced and tested. maybe dormant remotes? How would I go about reset or activating?

You don't need to but it wont matter leave the emergency key or remove it after you turn it the 5 times

Hi I have a 2023 Terrain SLT, I bought another fob and it's the same as the one that came with the SUV HYQ1AS. When it goes to remote 2, it does not program at all. I replace the battery. Can you confirm. I did exactly what you did and it only program my first and not the one I bought.
if the vehicle is in programming mode but will not respond to the second remote - there may be an issue with the second remote itself

Great Video.... I just bought a used 2018 GMC Terrain SEL and everyone wants at least $200 to replace the missing Key Fob. I have one working and I see replacements on Amazon for $39. Just not positive I trust myself to program the keys. I'm worried I will reset the working key and then have no working keys....
My concern would be that the new cheap aftermarket fob for $39 won't work at all. I would be more confident using a refurbished used OEM fob than a new aftermarket one.

I just ordered one off Amazon and it didn’t work so now my car is stuck in program mode while I wait on the real key fob from gm and it also put my car in theft mode because of the aftermarket one. I would highly suggest NOT to do one from Amazon
Is this procedure exactly the same for a 2020 Chevy Traverse? (except for placing the fob in the cupholder...presumbably would use the indentation under the console mat)
Nevermind!!! I bought a used 2020 Chevy Traverse and , of course, there was only one key FOB.... I bought an after market FOB off of Ebay and programmed the keys as described in this video (other than a different placement of the key fob--in the console) and it WORKED PERFECTLY!!! Saved me at least a couple of hundred dollars!

Some vehicle only show that message for a few seconds right when the door is opened - you might try just going off the time rather than the messages.
Do you have a Cdn market vehicle? I have a Cdn 2021 Sierra. The OM advises "This feature is not available in Canada". Need to have two working remotes to program a third.

Do you know if the cover for the manual door lock is broke and can’t be put back in, does the keyless unlock work or not? I had to pop it open but it was frozen over so the clip broke and I’m just wondering how much of a hurry I should be in to replace it
that cap should have no effect on function - its mainly just for looks. You probably will want to replace it eventually though as Im not sure those key cyclinders are designed to be exposed to the weather all the time

Unfortunately the Canadian Terrains require 2 working keys in order to be able to add an additional key yourself. You will need a Automotive Locksmith or Dealership to program the keys for you

you can take the key out of the door or leave it in - it won't matter either way. You should be able to try again right away
If I plan on adding a remote start should I purchase the GMC one made for it Previously to installing it or after the Installation the Viper I want says it works with factory FOB’s

You can't just program in a factory remote start fob to non-remote start vehicle - the vehicle needs to be set up for factory remote start as well. If you are adding an aftermarket remote start system - I believe you would need an aftermarket remote with the remote start button for it to work

Yes - you just need to start with the fobs far enough away from the vehicle so they cannot be detected. The order in which you program the fobs back in will determine the driver #

The Canadian vehicles require 2 woking keys in order to be able to add additional keys yourself - otherwise you will need a dealership or automotive locksmith

What is the frequency of the GM key fobs? I see both 315hz and 433hz advertised for the Terrain.
They can come both ways - it depends on your specific vehicle. If you have any existing remotes you can open it to see the numbers on the inside - The FCC ID is actually the number you want to match

Two questions...1) If you have a working original key and an aftermarket blank, is it absolutely necessary to have the emergency key cut? 2) At what point in this process is the original key erased?
No - you can just use the emergency key out of your original key. Once you get through the 3 10-minute intervals and the vehicle says ready for remote 1 - the original has been erased.

@@PYR-Autoa friend tried to program his key fob and did not follow the directions. In frustration he quit and asked me to do it, but did not tell me what steps he followed. So, when I open the door the screen says "Ready for remote 1". Where do I go from here? Does that message mean the all old key fobs have been erased? Can I continue to start programming and if so, how do I start? Or, can I stop the process and start over?
Thank you for the instructions. I did get stuck on one spot. I started with 1 working remote. I was able to follow all steps and successfully program a 2nd remote. Except, now neither key will start the car. Both remotes now lock, unlock, and remotely start the car, but they don't allow me to start the car using the push button. So the car will not leave park. At the end of following the video, I held the start button for 12 seconds, tested both keys, and they both lock and unlocked the car. Then i tried starting the car, it started once, but The dash then gave me a security error. After I turned my car off, now my car will lock and unlock with the remotes but it won't let me start it. How do I get this fixed?
Are you sure the second remote was successfully programmed? What your describing sounds like what happens when only one remote is programmed - in that situation you will need to hold down the stop/start button for 12 seconds before starting the vehicle every time until the second remote is successfully programmed

2029 GMC Terrain I have one working key I purchased second one on Amazon. I had the key cut at a locksmith. When I start the instructions you gave and the turn the original key to the left it starts beeping and going into the alarm and won’t stop. Why is it doing that? It does say remote learn pending but the beeping and alarm won’t stop unless I hit unlock.
Does it do that even if you unlock the vehicle with the working remote before you start the procedure?

So, I did this without researching enough about the fob. My 2020 GMC Terrian SLT is stuck in programming mode. I was able to do the process up until it got to remote 2, won't register the new aftermarket fobs off Amazon, reading comments I see I shouldn't have used those. I've bought 2 new original key fobs from the site you provided in another comment (I couldn't find that link anywhere on video, would be a nice addition to avoid people like me who didn't know lol). Anyway, it currently will work if I hold down ENGINE START / STOP for over 12 seconds it'll allow me to use my original fob I got with the vehicle. Says anti theft system needs service. My dealer can't even look at it for 2 months. What I can't figure out is why I can't get it out of that mode. Was looking for some help. Each time I get into the car, it says ready for remote 2. If I dismiss it, the car stays black and won't work. If I hold start / stop for 12 seconds, it'll allow me to use the fob till next time it's turned off. Sorry for the book, TIA for any suggestions!
Programming a second remote should resolve that issue

it sounds like you did not program in at least two keys as is explained in the beginning of the video. Programming a second key should fix that issue

Followed the procedure when it got to the part of start programming key 1 didn't remember the steps looked back on video and must of took to long everything erased turned off on dash now won't even read the key I had working any advice what I can do
It should not "time out" on you like that but If I would start over from the beginning of the procedure. If you're not seeing the messages on the dash try just going off of the time rather then the dash
i wasn’t able to program a new remote i got so i just reprogrammed the original key fob back to my gmc and it works but now everytime i remote start it it like goes back into programming mode so i keep having to hold the stop/start button for 12 seconds before it can actually turn on. how can i fix this?
if it makes any difference i do have a 2019 gmc terrain
You will need to program a second remote to fully exit programming mode
Does this procedure work for a 2021 GMC Yukon Denali ? 99% of all information out there says this won’t work unless you have two working remotes already. This is the only video I found that says it will work. I am a little leerie but can’t wait to try it. Just wanted to check to make sure it should work for a 2021 Yukon, and not mess up my car. We just bought this car used, and it only has one remote, with the emergency key already cut. So, according to your video, this should work, to program the two now GMC Yukon key fobs that I bought from Amazon. Thank you for your assistance..
This video is for a GMC Terrain. This will not work on a 2021 Yukon - 2 keys are required

This procedure will not work on Canadian Terrains. The Canadian Terrains require 2 working keys in order to be bale to add a new key yourself. If you have less that two working keys, then you will need to go to a locksmith or dealership. Okay... I failed left and right. Did it twice and failed twice. It said it was ready... but wouldn't see the key fob in the cup rest.
It turns out that every year has its own "thang." Some have it in the cup rest. One has it in the back of the center console. Mine, it turns out, has it in the bottom of the console under a rubber matt. I'm on my third try... and am tentatively hopeful.

It worked! Great product. You just have to find the right place to sit the keys to program them.
I tried this. Programmed both remotes but now car won’t start. But remotes unlock and lock

@@larrysmith2697 I don’t remember exactly what I did. But I think I waited for a bit and tried to restart all. I turned key three times to left and got the computer to start working and now both work. I don’t know if it was cuz I waited or if it was by turning key. But mine both work now

No - not if you do not have a cut emergency
But if I get 2 new fobs and get them cut to the vehicle that can be programmed right

So I have a key fob from my old 2019 gmc terrain, but want to reprogram it to my 2021 gmc terrain, everytime I go through the process and get to the part where it says ready for the 2nd one it won't program it..... I'm not sure why?
some remotes can only be programmed once, if you program some after market remotes they won’t program more than once. i have found this to be true with many push to starts for GM as a locksmith, i have learned this.
Anyone have trouble with it not wanting to pair with the key 1? I only have 1 replaced battery and it lost all keys. So went thru your steps now stuck at the pressing unlock.

The remote start button will only work on the new remote if your vehicle has the remote start option installed. The fobs needs to match your vehicles options.
