7:42 That's actually accurate. Many classic depictions of Naga in Thailand is very similar to the ocean going Oarfish. In fact, US soldiers in Thailand were once accused of killing a Naga, and the proof is a photograph of those soldiers holding up an Oarfish they caught.
This was probably the same idea they used in the Greek history of Hercules. In real life, the Hydra was probably not a real nine headed monster, but many snakes in a swamp. And the idea of growing two new heads was probably because there were so many snakes, it was hard to keep count.
I like how the three boss stages for Rahab are named after different ocean deities, implying that different cultures around the world have encountered him and have their own names for him. Also, I could be reading into this too much, but the different stages of the battle seem to reference different stages of evolution: Dagon crawls, like a primate. When he becomes Poseidon, he stands up, like a human. And when he becomes Rahab, he grows a mystical third eye, implying a higher stage of evolution.
It could also imply how limited the deity’s powers became after he decided to seal himself away from the world once he summoned the 5 great sea monsters. If he didn’t need to attack several explorers like when they started chasing after riches and fame, then he might have decided to not use all of his power if he only needed to deal with a few stragglers. In the ending it shows that Dagon/Poseidon/Rahab originally had the giant red eye open and most likely grew the smaller two as a way to still see with his power locked up.
Maybe it’s just me, but I always thought the names for the First and Third phases of the Final Boss should’ve been rearranged; Rahab should’ve been first, and Dagon last. It would’ve made more sense in terms of progression too, since Dagon is - according to Lovecraftian mythos - an ancient deity far older than any of the other deities dreamt up by humanity, and it would’ve made the whole “Rahab suddenly growing a third eye and turning into a demonic fish/mantis hybrid” thing make more sense.

I recently went to the arcade that used to have this game.. Broke my heart to find it was gone.
This game would be absolutely terrifying with an hd remaster
Oh nostalgia! Always play this in cinema before movie time.
These graphics look amazing for 1998, holy crap
This thing is my childhood.... It feels great seeing it again
I remember playing this at arcade center really long time ago as a kid with a random person and i gave him coins everytime he died so we can finish the game together while my mom's watching us play lol idk what I'm doing but I'm sure he seems like a nice person
my jam at the arcade. Loved getting into that little submarine and hammer into those cannons
Sitting here, watching this, I'm surprised nobody wrote a creepy pasta about this game, especially with how some of the monsters come at you head on
How this game never got a console release is beyond me
Now imagine this gets a remake or remaster, then they add in more bosses based on differing mythological creatures, the potential for cthulhu, predator x busting out of a glacier, an adolescent big fin squid, something similar to scp 3000, an ogopogo or Nessie type boss, a megalodon, an ancient fish that one of those pokémon are based on, the idea of a creature that made the infamous bloop. That would genuinely make me happy and 10 times more afraid of the ocean than I already am.
I love how the leviathan uses straight Predator sound effects.
Holy shit. I remember playing this game as a kid in the arcade! I never finished it though, sadly.
I love how most of these are regular animals and the final boss is literally just Satan
I mean there's no shark on earth with teeth and size like the leviathan, and midgardsorm is basically a basking shark the size of a mountain
Do you believe that loch ness exist?
@@babyseal8822 @rianmela3825 they did say *most*
Some of these monsters could leave a lasting impression cause it’s that terrifying lmao
A retro arcade named Time Line Arcade in York, PA has the original sit down cabinet version of The Ocean Hunter, the only thing is the player 2 gun controller needs replacement parts that are very hard to find so while it's playable player 2 has a distinct disadvantage when aiming. My nephew and I have to play the game all the way through every time we go there, it's a tradition.
Love that all of these are namer after mythical creatures and then there's just Basilosaurus.
Scary squid! 7:00
Actually, if you manage to defeat the White Death boss before it kills the diver, you can face an extra boss in the first level.
i saw 1 arcade cabinet of this back in the day, never got a chance to play it.
Imagine sequels of this game.
One for land monsters, one for extra sea monsters and one for air hazards.
Never seen this arcade game until now, thank you for sharing!
I've always wanted to play this, but as a kid I was way too scared. Now as an adult I'm like, MAN I MISSED OUT!
Beating this is easily one of my greatest childhood achievements
An great SuperModel3 legend from SEGA if there ever was one in the annals of on-rail shooter arcade history! Thanks for sharing!
This looks great!!
This needs to be rereleased for Switch, Steam, PS4 and Xbox.
I just realize we're the villain in this game, humanity destroy the planet and the boss just want a beautiful, happy place.
Every time a great beast shows up, the game lists their crimes, like the ungodly amount of people they killed. Literally only rahab applies to what you're saying.

really really hard nostalgia. that music is incredible. Like im standing in a target in 98', in a line to play the Star Fox 64 Demo, and hearing the Corneria music.
Wow never thought underwater house of the dead could be this amazing!
This game's bosses are really cool! The final stage is lovecraftian as hell
And the final boss was tragic villain

This explain final boss"s backstory
Age 13, birthday during a theme park, first arcade ever I completed with a friend. Around the 2000s.
Imagine snorkeling in ocean ruins and seeing Rahab coming at you.
Gees....I remember when I was a kid. I played this game in the mall....and I beat this game, everyone was watching me and gave me applause....lol
I'm not used to seeing this game without my shoulders shaking back and forth and hearing "SSSHDUN DUN DUN DUN DUN" over and over again lol i keep immitating it out of habit during the intense parts
